We consider synchrony patterns in coupled phase oscillator networks that correspond to invariant tori. For specific nongeneric coupling, these tori are equilibria relative to a continuous symmetry action. We analyze how the invariant tori deform under forced symmetry breaking as more general network interaction terms are introduced. We first show in general that perturbed tori that are relative equilibria can be computed using a parametrization method; this yields an asymptotic expansion of an embedding of the perturbed torus, as well as the local dynamics on the torus. We then apply this result to a coupled oscillator network, and we numerically study the dynamics on the persisting tori in the network by looking for bifurcations of their periodic orbits in a boundary-value-problem setup. This way we find new bifurcating stable synchrony patterns that can be the building blocks of larger global structures such as heteroclinic cycles.
In this paper, we prove the existence of full dimensional invariant tori for a non-autonomous, almost-periodically forced nonlinear beam equation with a periodic boundary condition via KAM theory.
A periodically forced oscillator in a model for seasonality shows stability pockets and chains thereof in the parameter plane. The frequency of the oscillator and the season indicated by a value between zero and one are the two parameters. The present study is intended as a theoretical complement to the numerical study of Schmal et al. in 2015 of stability pockets or Arnol'd onions in their terminology. We construct the Poincaré map of the forced oscillator and show that the Arnol'd tongues are taken into stability pockets by a map with a number of folds. Stability pockets are already observed…
In recent papers by the authors (S.~Motonaga and K.~Yagasaki, Obstructions to integrability of nearly integrable dynamical systems near regular level sets, submitted for publication, and K.~Yagasaki, Nonintegrability of nearly integrable dynamical systems near resonant periodic orbits, submitted for publication), two different techniques which allow us to prove the real-analytic or complex-meromorphic nonintegrability of forced nonlinear oscillators having the form of time-periodic perturbations of single-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems were provided. Here the concept of nonintegrability…
Our proof is based on a generalization of action-angle variables, a convergent Lie transformation, and Moser's invariant curve theorem. As an overall outline we give a quick proof of Morris' original theorem. Then the full theorem is established in two steps. In the first step we define a special case and then follow the proof given for Morris' Theorem to prove boundedness for the special case. In the second step we use the method of Lie transforms to reduce the general case to the special case.
Periodically-forced finite networks of heterogeneous coupled oscillators: a low-dimensional approach
We analyze the dynamics of the forced singularly perturbed differential equation of Duffing's type. We explain the appearance of the large frequency nonlinear oscillations of the solutions. It is shown that the frequency can be controlled by a small parameter at the highest derivative. We give some generalizations of results obtained recently by B.S. Wu, W.P. Sun and C.W. Lim, Analytical approximations to the double-well Duffing oscillator in large amplitude oscillations, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Volume 307, Issues 3-5, (2007), pp. 953-960. We study a generic model for the interaction of negative delayed feedback and periodic forcing that was first introduced by Ghil et al. in the context of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate system. This model takes the form of a delay differential equation and has been shown in previous work to be capable of producing complicated dynamics, which is organised by resonances between the external forcing and dynamics induced by feedback. For certain parameter values, we observe in simulations the sudden disappearance of (two-frequency dynamics on) tori. This can be explained by the fol…
The ability of a circadian system to entrain to the 24-hour light-dark cycle is one of its most important properties. A new tool, called the entrainment map, was recently introduced to study this process for a single oscillator. Here we generalize the map to study the effects of light-dark forcing in a hierarchical system consisting of a central circadian oscillator that drives a peripheral circadian oscillator. We develop techniques to reduced the higher dimensional phase space of the coupled system to derive a generalized 2-D entrainment map. Determining the nature of various fixed points, t…
The paper revisits a well-known model of forced vibro-impact oscillator with Amonton-Coulomb friction. In vast majority of the existing studies, this model included also viscous friction, and its global dynamics in the state space is governed by periodic, quasiperiodic or chaotic attractors. We demonstrate that removal of the viscous friction leads to qualitative modification of the global dynamics. Namely, the state space is divided into the regions with "regular" attraction to the aforementioned special solutions, and the regions with profoundly Hamiltonian dynamics. The latter regions conta…
We perform a detailed study of the dynamics of a nonlinear, one-dimensional oscillator driven by a periodic force under hysteretic damping, whose linear version was originally proposed and analyzed by Bishop in [1]. We first add a small quadratic stiffness term in the constitutive equation and construct the periodic solution of the problem by a systematic perturbation method, neglecting transient terms as $t\rightarrow \infty$. We then repeat the analysis replacing the quadratic by a cubic term, which does not allow the solutions to escape to infinity. In both cases, we examine the dependence …
We study the jump phenomenon present in the forced asymmetric Duffing oscillator using the known steady-state asymptotic solution. The major result is the computation of the jump manifold, which encodes global information about all possible jumps.
We discuss a Nash-Moser/ KAM algorithm for the construction of invariant tori for {\em tame} vector fields. Similar algorithms have been studied widely both in finite and infinite dimensional contexts: we are particularly interested in the second case where tameness properties of the vector fields become very important. We focus on the formal aspects of the algorithm and particularly on the minimal hypotheses needed for convergence. We discuss various applications where we show how our algorithm allows to reduce to solving only linear forced equations. We remark that our algorithm works at the…

The regular structures of a generic 4D symplectic map with a mixed phase space are organized by one-parameter families of elliptic 1D-tori. Such families show prominent bends, gaps, and new branches. We explain these features in terms of bifurcations of the families when crossing a resonance. For these bifurcations no external parameter has to be varied. Instead, the longitudinal frequency, which varies along the family, plays the role of the bifurcation parameter. As an example we study two coupled standard maps by visualizing the elliptic and hyperbolic 1D-tori in a 3D phase-space slice, loc…
Distributed delays modeled by 'weak generic kernels' are introduced in the well-known coupled Landau-Stuart system, as well as a chaotic van der Pol-Rayleigh system with parametric forcing. The systems are close via the 'linear chain trick'. Linear stability analysis of the systems and conditions for Hopf bifurcation which initiates oscillations are investigated, including deriving the normal form at bifurcation, and deducing the stability of the resulting limit cycle attractor. The value of the delay parameter $a=a_{Hopf}$ at Hopf bifurcation picks out the onset of Amplitude Death(AD) in all …
This paper revisits the resonant behavior of a harmonically-forced Duffing oscillator with a specific attention to phase resonance and to its relation with amplitude resonance. To this end, the different families of resonances, namely primary (1:1), superharmonic (k:1), subharmonic (1:ν) and ultra-subharmonic (k:ν) resonances are carefully studied using first and higher-order averaging. When the phase lag is calculated between the k-th harmonic of the displacement and the harmonic forcing, this study evidences that phase resonance occurs when the phase lag is equal to either π/2 (phase quadrat…
We consider a class of parametrically forced Hamiltonian systems with one-and-a-half degrees of freedom and study the stability of the dynamics when the frequency of the forcing is relatively high or low. We show that, provided the frequency of the forcing is sufficiently high, KAM theorem may be applied even when the forcing amplitude is far away from the perturbation regime. A similar result is obtained for sufficiently low frequency forcing, but in that case we need the amplitude of the forcing to be not too large; however we are still able to consider amplitudes of the forcing which are ou…
