We study the analog of power series expansions on the Sierpinski gasket, for analysis based on the Kigami Laplacian. The analog of polynomials are multiharmonic functions, which have previously been studied in connection with Taylor approximations and splines. Here the main technical result is an estimate of the size of the monomials analogous to x^n/n!. We propose a definition of entire analytic functions as functions represented by power series whose coefficients satisfy exponential growth conditions that are stronger than what is required to guarantee uniform convergence. We present a characterization of these functions in terms of exponential growth conditions on powers of the Laplacian of the function. These entire analytic functions enjoy properties, such as rearrangement and unique determination by infinite jets, that one would expect. However, not all exponential functions (eigenfunctions of the Laplacian) are entire analytic, and also many other natural candidates, such as the heat kernel, do not belong to this class. Nevertheless, we are able to use spectral decimation to study exponentials, and in particular to create exponentially decaying functions for negative eigenvalues.
We use spectral decimation to provide formulae for computing the harmonic gradients of Laplacian eigenfunctions on the Sierpinski Gasket. These formulae are given in terms of special functions that are defined as infinite products.
We construct a class of singular integral operators associated with homogeneous Calderón-Zygmund standard kernels on $d$-dimensional, $d <1$, Sierpinski gaskets $E_d$. These operators are bounded in $L^2(μ_d)$ and their principal values diverge $μ_d$ almost everywhere, where $μ_d$ is the natural (d-dimensional) measure on $E_d$.
For a family of domains in the Sierpinski gasket, we study harmonic functions of finite energy, characterizing them in terms of their boundary values, and study their normal derivatives on the boundary. We characterize those domains for which there is an extension operator for functions of finite energy. We give an explicit construction of the Green's function for these domains.
We prove existence of a measurable Riemannian structure on higher-dimensional harmonic Sierpinski gasket fractals and deduce Gaussian heat kernel bounds in the geodesic metric. Our proof differs from that given by Kigami for the usual Sierpinski gasket in that we show the geodesics are de Rham curves, for which there is an extensive regularity theory.
We study the analogue of a convex interpolant of two sets on Sierpinski gaskets and an associated notion of measure transport. The structure of a natural family of interpolating measures is described and an interpolation inequality is established. A key tool is a good description of geodesics on these gaskets, some results on which have previously appeared in the literature.
In this paper, we establish an analogue of the classical mean value property for both the harmonic functions and some general functions in the domain of the Laplacian on the Sierpinski gasket. Furthermore, we extend the result to some other p.c.f. fractals with Dihedral-3 symmetry.
We give a discrete characterization of the trace of a class of Sobolev spaces on the Sierpinski gasket to the bottom line. This includes the L2 domain of the Laplacian as a special case. In addition, for Sobolev spaces of low orders, including the domain of the Dirichlet form, the trace spaces are Besov spaces on the line.
In this paper we get a power estimate from above of the probability that Buffon's needle will land within distance 3^{-n} of Sierpinski's gasket of Hausdorff dimension 1. In comparison with the case of 1/4 corner Cantor set considered in Nazarov, Peres, and the second author: we still need the technique of arXiv:0801.2942 for splitting the directions to good and bad ones, but the case of Sierpinski gasket is considerably more generic and lacks symmetry, resulting in a need for much more careful estimates of zeros of the Fourier transform of Cantor measure.
One of the ways that analysis on fractals is more complicated than analysis on manifolds is that the asymptotic behavior of the spectral counting function $N(t)$ has a power law modulated by a nonconstant multiplicatively periodic function. Nevertheless, we show that for the Sierpinski gasket it is possible to write an exact formula, with no remainder term, valid for almost every $t$. This is a stronger result than is valid on manifolds.
In this paper we modify the method of Nazarov, Peres, and Volberg "The power law for the Buffon needle probability of the four-corner Cantor set", arXiv:0801.2942, to get an estimate from above of the Buffon needle probability of the $n$--th partially constructed Sierpinski gasket of Hausdorff dimension 1.
We present a direct proof of the non-degeneracy of the harmonic structures on the level-$n$ Sierpinski gaskets for any $n\geq 2$, which was conjectured by Hino in [H1,H2] and confirmed to be true by Tsougkas [T] very recently using Tutte's spring theorem.
We consider criteria for the differentiability of functions with continuous Laplacian on the Sierpinski Gasket and its higher-dimensional variants $SG_N$, $N>3$, proving results that generalize those of Teplyaev. When $SG_N$ is equipped with the standard Dirichlet form and measure $μ$ we show there is a full $μ$-measure set on which continuity of the Laplacian implies existence of the gradient $\nabla u$, and that this set is not all of $SG_N$. We also show there is a class of non-uniform measures on the usual Sierpinski Gasket with the property that continuity of the Laplacian implies the gra…
We develop a theory of Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the Sierpiński gasket ($SG$). These orthogonal polynomials arise through the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalisation process applied on the set of monomials on $SG$ using several notions of a Sobolev inner products. After establishing some recurrence relations for these orthogonal polynomials, we give estimates for their $L^2$, $L^\infty$ and Sobolev norms, and study their asymptotic behaviour. Finally, we study the properties of zero sets of polynomials and develop fast computational tools to explore applications to quadrature and interpolation.
In this paper, we focus on Strichartz's derivatives, a family of derivatives including the normal derivative, on p.c.f. (post critically finite) fractals, which are defined at vertex points in the graphs that approximate the fractal. We obtain a weak continuity property of the derivatives for functions in the domain of the Laplacian. For a function with zero normal derivative at any fixed vertex, the derivatives, including the normal derivatives of the neighboring vertices will decay to zero. The optimal rates of approximations are described and several non-trivial examples are provided to ill…
We prove that the Sierpiński gasket is non-removable for quasiconformal maps, thus answering a question of Bishop. The proof involves a new technique of constructing an exceptional homeomorphism from $\mathbb R^2$ into some non-planar surface $S$, and then embedding this surface quasisymmetrically back into the plane by using the celebrated Bonk-Kleiner Theorem arXiv:math/0107171. We also prove that all homeomorphic copies of the Sierpiński gasket are non-removable for continuous Sobolev functions of the class $W^{1,p}$ for $1\leq p\leq 2$, thus complementing and sharpening the results of the …
The construction of a Laplacian on a class of fractals which includes the Sierpinski gasket ({\bf $SG$}) has given rise to an intensive research on analysis on fractals. For instance, a complete theory of polynomials and power series on $SG$ has been developed by one of us and his coauthors. We build on this body of work to construct certain analogs of classical orthogonal polynomials (OP) on $SG$. In particular, we investigate key properties of these OP on $SG$, including a three-term recursion formula and the asymptotics of the coefficients appearing in this recursion. Moreover, we develop n…
We study the analogue of polynomials (solutions to $Δ^{n+1} u =0$ for some $n$) on the Sierpinski gasket ($SG$) with respect to a family of symmetric, self-similar Laplacians constructed by Fang, King, Lee, and Strichartz, extending the work of Needleman, Strichartz, Teplyaev, and Yung on the polynomials with respect to the standard Kigami Laplacian. We define a basis for the space of polynomials, the monomials, characterized by the property that a certain "derivative" is 1 at one of the boundary points, while all other "derivatives" vanish, and we compute the values of the monomials at the bo…
In recent years, relatively sharp quantitative results in the spirit of the Besicovitch projection theorem have been obtained for self-similar sets by studying the $L^p$ norms of the "projection multiplicity" functions, $f_θ$, where $f_θ(x)$ is the number of connected components of the partial fractal set that orthogonally project in the $θ$ direction to cover $x$. In \cite{NPV}, it was shown that $n$-th partial 4-corner Cantor set with self-similar scaling factor 1/4 decays in Favard length at least as fast as $\frac{C}{n^p}$, for $p<1/6$. In \cite{BV}, this same estimate was proved for the 1…
We study higher order tangents and higher order Laplacians on p.c.f. self-similar sets with fully symmetric structures, such as $D3$ or $D4$ symmetric fractals. Firstly, let $x$ be a vertex point in the graphs that approximate the fractal, we prove that for any $f$ defined near $x$, the higher oder weak tangent of $f$ at $x$, if exists, is the uniform limit of local multiharmonic functions that agree with $f$ in some sense near $x$. Secondly, we prove that the higher order Laplacian on a fractal can be expressible as a renormalized uniform limit of higher order graph Laplacians on the graphs t…
We study the extension problem on the Sierpinski Gasket ($SG$). In the first part we consider minimizing the functional $\mathcal{E}_λ(f) = \mathcal{E}(f,f) + λ\int f^2 d μ$ with prescribed values at a finite set of points where $\mathcal{E}$ denotes the energy (the analog of $\int |\nabla f|^2$ in Euclidean space) and $μ$ denotes the standard self-similiar measure on $SG$. We explicitly construct the minimizer $f(x) = \sum_{i} c_i G_λ(x_i, x)$ for some constants $c_i$, where $G_λ$ is the resolvent for $λ\geq 0$. We minimize the energy over sets in $SG$ by calculating the explicit quadratic fo…
We study the removability of compact sets for continuous Sobolev functions. In particular, we focus on sets with infinitely many complementary components, called "detour sets", which resemble the Sierpiński gasket. The main theorem is that if $K\subset \mathbb R^n$ is a detour set and its complementary components are sufficiently regular, then $K$ is $W^{1,p}$-removable for $p>n$. Several examples and constructions of sets where the theorem applies are given, including the Sierpiński gasket, Apollonian gaskets, and Julia sets.
We consider a trace theorem for self-similar Dirichlet forms on self-similar sets to self-similar subsets. In particular, we characterize the trace of the domains of Dirichlet forms on the Sierpinski gaskets and the Sierpinski carpets to their boundaries, where boundaries mean the triangles and rectangles which confine gaskets and carpets. As an application, we construct diffusion processes on a collection of fractals called fractal fields, which behave as the appropriate fractal diffusion within each fractal component of the field.
