This paper concerns a class of orbital integrals in Lie algebras over p-adic fields. The values of these orbital integrals at the unit element in the Hecke algebra count points on varieties over finite fields. The construction, which is based on motivic integration, works both in characteristic zero and in positive characteristic. As an application, the Fundamental Lemma for this class of integrals is lifted from positive characteristic to characteristic zero. The results are based on a formula for orbital integrals as distributions inflated from orbits in the quotient spaces of the Moy-Prasad filtrations of the Lie algebra. This formula is established by Fourier analysis on these quotient spaces.
This article constructs Shalika germs in the context of motivic integration, both for ordinary orbital integrals and kappa-orbital integrals. Based on transfer principles in motivic integration and on Waldspurger's endoscopic transfer of smooth functions in characteristic zero, we deduce the endoscopic transfer of smooth functions in sufficiently large residual characteristic.
This article shows that under general conditions, p-adic orbital integrals of definable functions are represented by virtual Chow motives. This gives an explicit example of the philosophy of Denef and Loeser, which predicts that all naturally occurring p-adic integrals are motivic.
The Harish-Chandra--Howe local character expansion expresses the characters of reductive, $p$-adic groups in terms of Fourier transforms of nilpotent orbital integrals on their Lie algebras, and Murnaghan--Kirillov theory expresses many characters of reductive, $p$-adic groups in terms of Fourier transforms of semisimple orbital integrals (also on their Lie algebras). In many cases, the evaluation of these Fourier transforms seems intractable; but, for $\operatorname{SL}_2$, the nilpotent orbital integrals have already been computed. In this paper, we use a variant of Huntsinger's integral for…
We give a detailed calculation of the Hochschild and cyclic homology of the algebra $\CIc(G)$ of locally constant, compactly supported functions on a reductive p-adic group G. We use these calculations to extend to arbitrary elements the definition the higher orbital integrals introduced in \cite{Blanc-Brylinski} for regular semisimple elements. Then we extend to higher orbital integrals some results of Shalika. We also investigate the effect of the ``induction morphism'' on Hochschild homology.
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field, $G = \text{GL}_{2n}(F)$ and $θ_0$ be the exterior automorphism of $G$ that fixes a pinning of a Borel pair. Consider the set $\widetilde{G} = G θ_0$ on which $G$ acts by conjugacy and the orbital integral $J_{\widetilde{G}}(θ_0, f)$ at $θ_0$. We prove a Plancherel-Harish-Chandra type formula for this orbital integral, namely as an integral over the irreducible tempered auto-dual representations of $G$ that we call "symplectic" (meaning their Langlands parameter factors through $\text{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$). This solves a problem raised by G. Chenevier and L. Clozel…
For a reductive group $G$ over a non-archimedean local field, with some assumptions on (residue) characteristic we give an method to compute certain orbital integrals using a method close to that of Goresky-Kottiwitz-MacPherson but in a different language. These orbital integrals allow us to compute the Shalika germs at some ``very elliptic'' elements in terms of number of rational points on some quasi-finite covers of the Hessenberg varieties of GKM, which are subvarieties of (partial) flag varieties. Such values of Shalika germs determine the Harish-Chandra local character expansions of the …
We prove a Weyl Harish-Chandra integration formula for the action of a reductive dual pair on the corresponding symplectic space $W$. As an intermediate step, we introduce a notion of a Cartan subspace and a notion of an almost semisimple element in the symplectic space $W$. We prove that the almost semisimple elements are dense in $W$. Finally, we provide estimates for the orbital integrals associated with the different Cartan subspaces in $W$.
This is a short announcement and summary of the results of arxiv:1111.7057, arxiv.org:1111.4405, and Appendix B to arxiv:1208.1945. In particular, we emphasize the exposition of the ideas related to model theory and motivic integration, and simplify the definitions, to make these results easily accessible to non-model theorists.
We relate the "Fourier" orbital integrals of corresponding spherical functions on the p-adic groups SO(5) and PGL(2). The correspondence is defined by a "lifting" of representations of these groups. This is a local "fundamental lemma" needed to compare the geometric sides of the global Fourier summation formulae (or relative trace formulae) on these two groups. This comparison leads to conclusions about a well known lifting of representations from PGL(2) to PGSp(4). This lifting produces counter examples to the Ramanujan conjecture.
We rewrite Arthur's asymptotic formula for weighted orbital integrals on real groups with the aid of a residue calculus and extend the resulting formula to the Schwartz space. Then we extract the available information about the coefficients in the decomposition of the Fourier transforms of Arthur's invariant distributions I_M(γ) in terms of standard solutions of the pertinent holonomic system of differential equations. This allows us to determine some of those coefficients explicitly. Finally, we prove descent formulas for those differential equations, for their standard solutions and for the …
Let $\rm E/\rm F$ be an unramified quadratic extension of local non archimedean fields of characteristic 0. Let $\underline{H}$ be an algebraic reductive group, defined and split over $\rm F$. We assume that the split connected component of the center of $\underline{H}$ is trivial. Let $(τ,V)$ be a $\underline{H}(\rm F)$-distinguished supercuspidal representation of $\underline{H}(\rm E)$. Using the recent results of C. Zhang, and the geometric side of a local relative trace formula obtained by P. Delorme, P. Harinck and S. Souaifi, we describe spherical characters associated to $\underline{H}…
Let $F$ be a non--Archimedean local field of characteristic $\geq 0$, and let $G=GL(N,F)$, $N\geq 1$. An element $γ\in G$ is said to be quasi--regular if the centralizer of $γ$ in $M(N,F)$ is a product of field extensions of $F$. Let $G_{\rm qr}$ be the set of quasi--regular elements of $G$. For $γ\in G_{\rm qr}$, we denote by $\mathcal{O}_γ$ the ordinary orbital integral on $G$ associated with $γ$. In this paper, we replace the Weyl discriminant $\vert D_G\vert$ by a normalization factor $η_G: G_{\rm qr}\rightarrow {\Bbb R}_{>0}$ which allows us to obtain the same results as proven by Harish-…
Let $F$ be a nonarchimedean local field and consider the action of the reductive group SO$_3(F)$ on the spherical variety (U$_3$/O$_3)(F)$. We compute the endoscopic orbital integrals of the basic function in this situation. Knowing the endoscopic orbital integrals is essential for observing the existence of transfer in this relative setting. This would be the first time such a computation has appeared in the literature for spherical varieties with type $N$-spherical roots.
It is one of a series of articles whose goal is to stabilize the twisted trace formula. In two previous papers, we have considered the stabilization of weighted orbital integrals over a non-archimedean local field. Here we consider the similar question over the real field. The principal result is the same: all expected properties are deduced from the stabilization of weighted orbital integrals relative to strongly regular elements.
In this short note, we study the variation of orbital integrals, as traces on the group algebra $G$, under the deformation groupoid. We show that orbital integrals are continuous under the deformation. And we prove that the pairing between orbital integrals and $K$-theory element of $C^*_r(G)$ stays constant with respect to the deformation for regular group elements, but vary at singular elements.
These are the expanded lecture notes from the author's mini-course during the graduate summer school of the Park City Math Institute in 2015. The main topics covered are: geometry of Springer fibers, affine Springer fibers and Hitchin fibers; representations of (affine) Weyl groups arising from these objects; relation between affine Springer fibers and orbital integrals.
Let $F$ be a local non-archimedian field, $G$ a semisimple $F$-group, $dg$ a Haar measure on $G$ and $\mathcal S(G)$ be the space of locally constant complex valued functions $f$ on $G$ with compact support. For any regular elliptic congugacy class $Ω=h^G\subset G$ we denote by $I_Ω$ the $G$-invariant functional on $\mathcal S (G)$ given by $$I_Ω(f)=\int_G f(g^{-1}hg)dg$$ This paper provides the spectral decomposition of functionals $I_Ω$ in the case $G=PGL(2,F)$ and in the last section first steps of such an analysis for the general case.
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field and let $G$ be a connected reductive group defined over $F$. We assume $p$ is big. Denote $\mathfrak{g}$ the Lie algebra of $G$. To each vertex $s$ of the reduced Bruhat-Tits' building of $G$, we associate as usual a reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_{s}$ defined over the residual field ${\mathbb F}_{q}$. We normalize suitably a Fourier-transform $f\mapsto \hat{f}$ on $C_{c}^{\infty}(\mathfrak{g}(F))$. We study the subspace of functions $f\in C_{c}^{\infty}(\mathfrak{g}(F))$ such that the orbital integrals of $f$ and of $\hat{f}$ are $0$ for each element of $ \mat…
We characterize the Local Langlands Correspondence (LLC) for inner forms of $GL_n$ via the Jacquet-Langlands Correspondence (JLC) and compatibility with the Langlands Classification. We show that LLC satisfies a natural compatibility with parabolic induction and characterize LLC for inner forms as a unique family of bijections $Π(GL_r(D)) \to Φ(GL_r(D))$ for each $r$, (for a fixed $D$) satisfying certain properties. We construct a surjective map of Bernstein centers $\mathfrak{Z}(GL_n(F))\to \mathfrak{Z}(GL_r(D))$ and show this produces pairs of matching distributions. Finally, we construct ex…
This is one of a series of articles, in collaboration with C. Moeglin, whose goal is to stabilize the twisted trace formula. In the previous article, we have stated several assertions about the stabilization of weighted orbital integrals over a non-archimedean field. Those integrals depend on a conjugacy class in our twisted space. Here we deduce all these assertions from a unique one, where the conjugacy class is assumed to be strongly regular.
The purpose of this paper is to extend the explicit geometric evaluation of semisimple orbital integrals for smooth kernels for the Casimir operator obtained by the first author to the case of kernels for arbitrary elements in the center of the enveloping algebra.
Recent work of Altuğ continues the preliminary analysis of Langlands' Beyond Endoscopy proposal for $GL(2)$ by removing the contribution of the trivial representation to the trace formula using a Poisson summation formula. We show that Altuğ's method of smoothing real elliptic orbital integrals by an approximate functional equation extends to $GL(n)$. We also discuss the case of an arbitrary reductive group, and remaining obstructions for applying Poisson summation.
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedan local field, $G$ a connected reductive group defined and split over $F$, and $T$ a maximal $F$-split torus in $G$. Let $χ_0$ be a depth zero character of the maximal compact subgroup $\mathcal{T}$ of $T(F)$. It gives by inflation a character $ρ$ of an Iwahori subgroup $\mathcal{I}$ of $G(F)$ containing $\mathcal{T}$. From Roche, $χ_0$ defines a split endoscopic group $G'$ of $G$, and there is an injective morphism of ${\Bbb C}$-algebras $\mathcal{H}(G(F),ρ) \rightarrow \mathcal{H}(G'(F),1_{\mathcal{I}'})$ where $\mathcal{H}(G(F),ρ)$ is the Hecke algebra of compactly…
This note provides an informal introduction, with examples, to some technical aspects of the re-normalization of measures on orbital integrals used in the work of Langlands, Frenkel-Langlands-Ngô, and Altug on Beyond Endoscopy. In particular, we survey different relevant measures on algebraic tori and explain the connection with the Tamagawa numbers. We work out the example of $\mathrm{GL}_2$ in complete detail. The Appendix by Matthew Koster illustrates, for the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and $\mathfrak{so}_3$, the relation between the so-called geometric measure on the orbits and Kirillo…
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic not equal to 2, let $E/F$ be a finite unramified extension field, and let $σ$ be a generator of $\text{Gal}(E, F )$. Let $f$ be an element of $Z(H_{I_E})$, the center of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra for $GL_2(E)$, and let $b$ be the Iwahori base change homomorphism from $Z(H_{I_E})$ to $Z(H_{I_F})$, the center of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra for $GL_2(F)$ [8]. This paper proves the matching of the $σ$-twisted orbital integral over $GL_2(E)$ of $f$ with the orbital integral over $GL_2(F)$ of $bf$. To do so, we compute the orbital and $σ$-twis…
We analyze the asymptotic behavior of certain twisted orbital integrals arising from the study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The main tools include the Base Change Fundamental Lemma and $q$-analogues of the Kostant partition functions. As an application we prove a conjecture of Miaofen Chen and Xinwen Zhu, relating the set of irreducible components of an affine Deligne-Lusztig variety modulo the action of the $σ$-centralizer group to the Mirkovic-Vilonen basis of a certain weight space of a representation of the Langlands dual group.
We present a conjecture (and a proof for G=SL(2)) generalizing a result of J. Arthur which expresses a character value of a cuspidal representation of a $p$-adic group as a weighted orbital integral of its matrix coefficient. It also generalizes a conjecture by the second author proved by Schneider-Stuhler and (independently) the first author. The latter statement expresses an elliptic character value as an orbital integral of a pseudo-matrix coefficient defined via the Chern character map taking value in zeroth Hochschild homology of the Hecke algebra. The present conjecture generalizes the c…
About 15 years ago, Bismut gave a natural construction of a Hodge theory for a hypoelliptic Laplacian acting on the total space of the cotangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold. This operator interpolates between the classical elliptic Laplacian on the base and the generator of the geodesic flow. We will describe recent developments of the theory of hypoelliptic Laplacians, in particular the explicit formula obtained by Bismut for orbital integrals and the recent solution by Shen of Fried's conjecture (dating back to 1986) for locally symmetric spaces. The conjecture predicts the equality of t…
We study upper bounds, approximations, and limits for functions of motivic exponential class, uniformly in non-Archimedean local fields whose characteristic is $0$ or sufficiently large. Our results together form a flexible framework for doing analysis over local fields in a field-independent way. As corollaries, we obtain many new transfer principles, for example, for local constancy, continuity, and existence of various kinds of limits. Moreover, we show that the Fourier transform of an $L^2$-function of motivic exponential class is again of motivic exponential class. As an application in th…
Recently, two of the authors of this paper constructed cyclic cocycles on Harish-Chandra's Schwartz algebra of linear reductive Lie groups that detect all information in the $K$-theory of the corresponding group $C^*$-algebra. The main result in this paper is an index formula for the pairings of these cocycles with equivariant indices of elliptic operators for proper, cocompact actions. This index formula completely determines such equivariant indices via topological expressions.
Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group with discrete series. We use maps $K_0(C^*_rG)\to \mathbb{C}$ defined by orbital integrals to recover group theoretic information about $G$, including information contained in $K$-theory classes not associated to the discrete series. An important tool is a fixed point formula for equivariant indices obtained by the authors in an earlier paper. Applications include a tool to distinguish classes in $K_0(C^*_rG)$, the (known) injectivity of Dirac induction, versions of Selberg's principle in $K$-theory and for matrix coefficients of the discrete series, a Tannaka…
For two distinguished prime $\ell$ and $p$, we prove a $\ell$-adic version of the Poisson formula for reductive $p$-adic groups. In order to do this we write an identity for the trace of regular representation and orbital integrals. Next we reduce them to orbital integrals for endoscopy groups and look at this as the special value of $L$-function at $s=0$. And finally show that it is equal to the special value of motivic $L$-function at $s=0$.
We establish an invariant local trace formula for the tangent space of some symmetric spaces over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. These symmetric spaces are studied in Guo-Jacquet trace formulae and our methods are inspired by works of Waldspurger and Arthur. Some other results are given during the proof including a noninvariant local trace formula, Howe's finiteness for weighted orbital integrals and the representability of the Fourier transform of weighted orbital integrals. These local results are prepared for the comparison of regular semi-simple terms, which are weig…
It is a step in the proof of the stabilization of the twisted trace formula. We generalize to the twisted case the proposition 3.1 of the third Arthur's paper on the stabilization. That is, consider the difference between an omega-equivariant weighted orbital integral (relative to a Levi subspace of a twisted space) and its endoscopic avatar. Then this difference is the ordinary omega-orbital integral of some function on the Levi subspace. Here, the base-field is non-archimedean.
