This article shows that under general conditions, p-adic orbital integrals of definable functions are represented by virtual Chow motives. This gives an explicit example of the philosophy of Denef and Loeser, which predicts that all naturally occurring p-adic integrals are motivic.
This is a short announcement and summary of the results of arxiv:1111.7057, arxiv.org:1111.4405, and Appendix B to arxiv:1208.1945. In particular, we emphasize the exposition of the ideas related to model theory and motivic integration, and simplify the definitions, to make these results easily accessible to non-model theorists.
This article constructs Shalika germs in the context of motivic integration, both for ordinary orbital integrals and kappa-orbital integrals. Based on transfer principles in motivic integration and on Waldspurger's endoscopic transfer of smooth functions in characteristic zero, we deduce the endoscopic transfer of smooth functions in sufficiently large residual characteristic.
With representation-theoretic applications in mind, we construct a formalism of reduced motives with integral coefficients. These are motivic sheaves from which the higher motivic cohomology of the base scheme has been removed. We show that reduced stratified Tate motives satisfy favorable properties including weight and t-structures. We also prove that reduced motives on cellular (ind-)schemes unify various approaches to mixed sheaves in representation theory, such as Soergel-Wendt's semisimplified Hodge motives, Achar-Riche's complexes of parity sheaves, as well as Ho-Li's recent category of…
We study upper bounds, approximations, and limits for functions of motivic exponential class, uniformly in non-Archimedean local fields whose characteristic is $0$ or sufficiently large. Our results together form a flexible framework for doing analysis over local fields in a field-independent way. As corollaries, we obtain many new transfer principles, for example, for local constancy, continuity, and existence of various kinds of limits. Moreover, we show that the Fourier transform of an $L^2$-function of motivic exponential class is again of motivic exponential class. As an application in th…
We study transfer principles for upper bounds of motivic exponential functions and for linear combinations of such functions, directly generalizing the transfer principles from [7] by Cluckers-Loeser and [13, Appendix B] by Shin-Templier (appendix B by Cluckers-Gordon-Halupczok). These functions come from rather general oscillatory integrals on local fields, and can be used to describe e.g. Fourier transforms of orbital integrals. One of our techniques consists in reducing to simpler functions where the oscillation only comes from the residue field.
This paper concerns a class of orbital integrals in Lie algebras over p-adic fields. The values of these orbital integrals at the unit element in the Hecke algebra count points on varieties over finite fields. The construction, which is based on motivic integration, works both in characteristic zero and in positive characteristic. As an application, the Fundamental Lemma for this class of integrals is lifted from positive characteristic to characteristic zero. The results are based on a formula for orbital integrals as distributions inflated from orbits in the quotient spaces of the Moy-Prasad…
For two distinguished prime $\ell$ and $p$, we prove a $\ell$-adic version of the Poisson formula for reductive $p$-adic groups. In order to do this we write an identity for the trace of regular representation and orbital integrals. Next we reduce them to orbital integrals for endoscopy groups and look at this as the special value of $L$-function at $s=0$. And finally show that it is equal to the special value of motivic $L$-function at $s=0$.
For arbitrary connected reductive group G we consider the motivic integral over the arc space of an arbitrary Q-Gorenstein horospherical G-variety associated with a colored fan and prove a formula for the stringy E-function of a horospherical variety X which generalizes the one for toric varieties. We remark that in contrast to toric varieties the stringy E-function of a Gorenstein horospherical variety X may be not a polynomial if some cones in the fan of X have nonempty sets of colors. Using the stringy E-function, we can formulate and prove a new smoothness criterion for locally factorial h…
The Harish-Chandra--Howe local character expansion expresses the characters of reductive, $p$-adic groups in terms of Fourier transforms of nilpotent orbital integrals on their Lie algebras, and Murnaghan--Kirillov theory expresses many characters of reductive, $p$-adic groups in terms of Fourier transforms of semisimple orbital integrals (also on their Lie algebras). In many cases, the evaluation of these Fourier transforms seems intractable; but, for $\operatorname{SL}_2$, the nilpotent orbital integrals have already been computed. In this paper, we use a variant of Huntsinger's integral for…
We give a detailed calculation of the Hochschild and cyclic homology of the algebra $\CIc(G)$ of locally constant, compactly supported functions on a reductive p-adic group G. We use these calculations to extend to arbitrary elements the definition the higher orbital integrals introduced in \cite{Blanc-Brylinski} for regular semisimple elements. Then we extend to higher orbital integrals some results of Shalika. We also investigate the effect of the ``induction morphism'' on Hochschild homology.
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field, $G = \text{GL}_{2n}(F)$ and $θ_0$ be the exterior automorphism of $G$ that fixes a pinning of a Borel pair. Consider the set $\widetilde{G} = G θ_0$ on which $G$ acts by conjugacy and the orbital integral $J_{\widetilde{G}}(θ_0, f)$ at $θ_0$. We prove a Plancherel-Harish-Chandra type formula for this orbital integral, namely as an integral over the irreducible tempered auto-dual representations of $G$ that we call "symplectic" (meaning their Langlands parameter factors through $\text{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$). This solves a problem raised by G. Chenevier and L. Clozel…
For a reductive group $G$ over a non-archimedean local field, with some assumptions on (residue) characteristic we give an method to compute certain orbital integrals using a method close to that of Goresky-Kottiwitz-MacPherson but in a different language. These orbital integrals allow us to compute the Shalika germs at some ``very elliptic'' elements in terms of number of rational points on some quasi-finite covers of the Hessenberg varieties of GKM, which are subvarieties of (partial) flag varieties. Such values of Shalika germs determine the Harish-Chandra local character expansions of the …
We prove a Weyl Harish-Chandra integration formula for the action of a reductive dual pair on the corresponding symplectic space $W$. As an intermediate step, we introduce a notion of a Cartan subspace and a notion of an almost semisimple element in the symplectic space $W$. We prove that the almost semisimple elements are dense in $W$. Finally, we provide estimates for the orbital integrals associated with the different Cartan subspaces in $W$.
This article gives an introduction to arithmetic motivic integration in the context of p-adic integrals that arise in representation theory. A special case of the fundamental lemma is interpreted as an identity of Chow motives.
Let $F$ be a nonarchimedean local field and consider the action of the reductive group SO$_3(F)$ on the spherical variety (U$_3$/O$_3)(F)$. We compute the endoscopic orbital integrals of the basic function in this situation. Knowing the endoscopic orbital integrals is essential for observing the existence of transfer in this relative setting. This would be the first time such a computation has appeared in the literature for spherical varieties with type $N$-spherical roots.
It is one of a series of articles whose goal is to stabilize the twisted trace formula. In two previous papers, we have considered the stabilization of weighted orbital integrals over a non-archimedean local field. Here we consider the similar question over the real field. The principal result is the same: all expected properties are deduced from the stabilization of weighted orbital integrals relative to strongly regular elements.
These are the expanded lecture notes from the author's mini-course during the graduate summer school of the Park City Math Institute in 2015. The main topics covered are: geometry of Springer fibers, affine Springer fibers and Hitchin fibers; representations of (affine) Weyl groups arising from these objects; relation between affine Springer fibers and orbital integrals.
In this short note, we study the variation of orbital integrals, as traces on the group algebra $G$, under the deformation groupoid. We show that orbital integrals are continuous under the deformation. And we prove that the pairing between orbital integrals and $K$-theory element of $C^*_r(G)$ stays constant with respect to the deformation for regular group elements, but vary at singular elements.
It is the second article of a series whose final goal is the stabilization of the twisted trace formula. Over a non archimedean field, we define (after Arthur) wheighted orbital integrals and their stable and endoscopic versions. We state the main theorems that will be proved in the following articles. We begin to study the local properties of our integrals, for instance expansion in Shalika germs.
This is one of a series of articles, in collaboration with C. Moeglin, whose goal is to stabilize the twisted trace formula. In the previous article, we have stated several assertions about the stabilization of weighted orbital integrals over a non-archimedean field. Those integrals depend on a conjugacy class in our twisted space. Here we deduce all these assertions from a unique one, where the conjugacy class is assumed to be strongly regular.
The purpose of this paper is to extend the explicit geometric evaluation of semisimple orbital integrals for smooth kernels for the Casimir operator obtained by the first author to the case of kernels for arbitrary elements in the center of the enveloping algebra.
