We study birational projective models of ${\mathcal M}_{2,2}$ obtained from the moduli space of curves with nonspecial divisors. We describe geometrically which singular curves appear in these models and show that one of them is obtained by blowing down the Weierstrass divisor in the moduli stack of ${\mathcal Z}$-stable curves $\overline{\mathcal M}_{2,2}({\mathcal Z})$ defined by Smyth. As a corollary, we prove projectivity of the coarse moduli space $\overline{M}_{2,2}({\mathcal Z})$.
We study the birational geometry of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on the projective plane via Bridgeland stability conditions. We show that the entire MMP of their moduli spaces can be run via wall-crossing. In this paper we consider moduli spaces of coherent systems on an elliptic curve. We compute their Hodge polynomials and determine their birational types in some cases. We study the birational geometry of the moduli space of complete $n$-quadrics $X$. We exhibit generators for Eff$(X)$ and Nef$(X)$, the cone of effective divisors and the cone of nef divisors, respectively. As a corollary X is a Mori Dream space. Furthermore, we run the MMP on $X$ and find a moduli interpretation for the models induced by the generators of the nef cone. In the case of complete quadric surfaces, we describe all the birational models of $X$ induced by the movable cone and find a moduli interpretation for some of these models.

We construct a finite dimensional Kaehler manifold with a holomorphic, symplectic circle action whose symplectic reduced spaces may be identified with the tau-vortex moduli spaces (or tau-stable pairs). The Morse theory of the circle action induces natural birational maps between the reduced spaces for different values of tau which in the case of rank two bundles can be canonically resolved in a sequence of blow-ups and blow-downs.
The depth of a vector bundle E over the projective plane P^2 is the largest integer h such that [E]/h is in the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves on P^2 where [E] is the class of E in this Grothendieck group. It is known that the moduli space of plane quartic curves is birational to an arithmetic quotient of a 6-dimensional complex ball. In this paper, we shall show that there exists a 15-dimensional space of meromorphic automorphic forms on the complex ball which gives a birational embedding of the moduli space of plane quartics with level 2 structure into 14-dimensional projective space. This map coincides with the one given by Coble by using Gopel invariants.

This is a considerably expanded version of the "pure" part of our 2002 preprint. We define a category of pure birational motives over a field, depending on the choice of an adequate equivalence relation on algebraic cycles. It is obtained by "killing" the Lefschetz motive in the corresponding category of effective motives. For rational equivalence, it encompasses Bloch's decomposition of the diagonal. We study the induced Chow-Künneth decompositions in this category, and establish relationships with Rost's cycle modules and the Albanese functor for smooth projective varieties.

We present a short proof of the Harris-Mumford theorem on the Kodaira dimension of the moduli space which replaces the computations on the stack of admissible covers by a simple study of tautological Koszul bundles on M_g. Let $φ$ and $ψ$ be quadratic forms over a field $K$ of characteristic different from 2. In this paper, we give a criterion for isotropy of $φ$ over the function field of $ψ$ in terms of representations and we apply it to stably birational equivalence of $φ$ and $ψ$. Then we use this criterion to investigate the case of stably birational equivalence of multiples of Pfister forms. Finally, we give a a criterion of stably birational equivalence of quadratic forms in terms of isomorphisms of quotients of special Clifford groups by the kernel of the spinor norm.

The object of this paper is the study of the birational structure of the coarse moduli space $U_C(r,0)$ of semi-stable rank r vector bundles on $C$ with degree 0 determinant and of its moduli subspace $SU_C(r)$ given by the vector bundles with trivial determinant.
