We express explicitly the integral closures of some ring extensions; this is done for all Bring-Jerrard extensions of any degree as well as for all general extensions of degree < 6; so far such an explicit expression is known only for degree < 4 extensions. As a geometric application we present explicitly the structure sheaf of every Bring-Jerrard covering space in terms of coefficients of the equation defining the covering; in particular, we show that a degree-3 morphism f : Y --> X is quasi-etale if and only if the first Chern class of the sheaf f_*(O_Y) is trivial (details in Theorem 5.3). We also try to get a geometric Galoisness criterion for an arbitrary degree-n finite morphism; this is successfully done when n = 3 and less satifactorily done when n = 5.
The Qth-power algorithm for computing structured global presentations of integral closures of affine domains over finite fields is modified to compute structured presentations of integral closures of ideals in affine domains over finite fields relative to a local monomial ordering. A non-homogeneous version of the standard (homogeneous) Rees algebra is introduced as well.
We study the regularity of small symbolic powers and integral closure of small powers of edge ideals. We also prove that the regularity of integral closure of powers of edge ideals of graphs with at most two odd cycles is the same as the regularity of their powers.
The F-threshold $c^J(\a)$ of an ideal $\a$ with respect to the ideal $J$ is a positive characteristic invariant obtained by comparing the powers of $\a$ with the Frobenius powers of $J$. We show that under mild assumptions, we can detect the containment in the integral closure or the tight closure of a parameter ideal using F-thresholds. We formulate a conjecture bounding $c^J(\a)$ in terms of the multiplicities $e(\a)$ and $e(J)$, when $\a$ and $J$ are zero-dimensional ideals, and $J$ is generated by a system of parameters. We prove the conjecture when $J$ is a monomial ideal in a polynomial …
We prove that, modulo any power of a prime $p$, the absolute integral closure of an excellent noetherian domain is Cohen-Macaulay. A graded analog is also established, yielding variants of Kodaira vanishing "up to finite covers" in mixed characteristic. Our main tools are (log) prismatic cohomology (which yields a Frobenius action in mixed characteristic) and the $p$-adic Riemann-Hilbert functor for constructible étale $\mathbf{F}_p$-sheaves on varieties over a $p$-adic field (which almost controls perfectified prismatic cohomology).
Given an ideal in a polynomial ring, we show that the asymptotic resurgence studied by Guardo, Harbourne, and Van Tuyl can be computed using integral closures. As a consequence, the asymptotic resurgence of an ideal is the maximum of finitely many ratios involving Waldschmidt-like constants (which we call skew Waldschmidt constants) defined in terms of Rees valuations. We use this to prove that the asymptotic resurgence coincides with the resurgence if the ideal is normal (that is, all its powers are integrally closed). For a monomial ideal the skew Waldschmidt constants have an interpretation…
Let R be a local Noetherian domain of positive characteristic. A theorem of Hochster and Huneke (1992) states that if R is excellent, then the absolute integral closure of R is a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. We prove that if R is the homomorphic image of a Gorenstein local ring, then all the local cohomology (below the dimension) of such a ring maps to zero in a finite extension of the ring. There results an extension of the original result of Hochster and Huneke to the case in which R is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein local ring, and a considerably simpler proof of this result in the case…
We study the algebraic and geometric properties of the integral closure of different rings of functions on a real algebraic variety : the regular functions and the continuous rational functions.
Let $V$ be a smooth scheme over a field $k$, and let $\{I_n, n\geq 0\}$ be a filtration of sheaves of ideals in $\calo_V$, such that $I_0=\calo_V$, and $I_s\cdot I_t\subset I_{s+t}$. In such case $\bigoplus I_n$ is called a Rees algebra. A Rees algebra is said to be a Diff-algebra if, for any two integers $N>n$ and any differential operator $D$ of order $n$, $D(I_N)\subset I_{N-n}$. Any Rees algebra extends to a smallest Diff-algebra. There are two ways to define extensions of Rees algebras, and both are of interest in singularity theory. One is that defined by taking integral closures (in whi…
In this article we give an algorithm for computing the integral closure of a reduced Noetherian ring R, in case this integral closure is finitely generated over R.
In 1936, Krull asked if the integral closure of a primary ideal is still primary. Fifty years later, Huneke partially answered this question by giving a primary polynomial ideal whose integral closure is not primary in a regular local ring of characteristic $p=2$. We provide counterexamples to Krull's question regarding polynomial rings with any characteristics. We also find that the Jacobian ideal $J$ of the polynomial $f = x^6 + y^6 + x^4 z t + z^3$ given by Briançon and Speder in 1975 is a counterexample to Krull's question. Let $V_1$ be the hypersurface defined by $f = 0$ and $V_2$ be its …
The aim of this paper is to extend the main result of C. Huneke and G. Lyubeznik in [Adv. Math. 210 (2007), 498--504] to the class of rings that are images of Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Namely, let $R$ be a local Noetherian domain of positive characteristic that is an image of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that all local cohomology of $R$ (below the dimension) maps to zero in a finite extension of the ring. As a direct consequence we obtain that the absolute integral closure of $R$ is a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. Since every excellent local ring is an image of a Cohen-Macaulay local …
I introduce the concept of integral closure for elements and ideals in idempotent semirings, and establish how it corresponds to its namesake in commutative algebra. In the case of free semirings, integral closure can be understood in terms of a certain monoid of convex bodies under Minkowski sum. I argue that integral closure therefore accounts for the difference between `tropical functions' and real functions.
We study the distribution of $S$-integral points on $\mathrm{SL}_2$-orbit closures of binary forms and prove an asymptotic formula for the number of $S$-integral points of bounded height on $\mathrm{SL}_2$-orbit closures of binary forms. This extends a result of Duke, Rudnick, and Sarnak. The main ingredients of the proof are the method of mixing developed by Eskin-McMullen and Benoist-Oh, Chambert-Loir-Tschinkel's study of asymptotic volume of height balls, and Hassett-Tschinkel's description of log resolutions of $\mathrm{SL}_2$-orbit closures of binary forms.
We introduce mixed Segre numbers of ideals which generalize the notion of mixed multiplicities of ideals of finite colength and show how many results on mixed multiplicities can be extended to results on mixed Segre numbers. In particular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of these numbers for two ideals to have the same integral closure. Also, our theory yields a new proof of a generalization of Rees' theorem that links the integral closure of an ideal to its multiplicity. Finally, we give a quick application of our results to Whitney equisingularity.
Proofs of two results about a monomial ideal -- describing membership in auxiliary ideals associated to the monomial ideal -- are given which do not invoke resolution of singularities. The AM--GM inequality is used as a substitute for taking a log resolution of the monomial ideal.
This paper uses the theory of integral closure of modules to study the sections of both real and complex analytic spaces. The stratification conditions used are the (t^) conditions introduced by Thom and Trotman. Our results include a new simple proof showing how the (t^r) conditions improve under Grassman modification, and a characterization of the (t^r) conditions using the multiplicity of a submodule of the Jacobian module of the singularity. This gives numerical criteria for Verdier Equisingularity of families of sections of the space.
In this paper we investigate the question of normality for special monomial ideals in a polynomial ring over a field. We first include some expository sections that give the basics on the integral closure of a ideal, the Rees algebra on an ideal, and some fundamental results on the integral closure of a monomial ideal.
An $R$-algebra $S$ is $R$-solid if there exists a nonzero $R$-linear map $S \rightarrow R$. In characteristic $p$, the study of $F$-singularities such as Frobenius splittings implicitly rely on the $R$-solidity of $R^{1/p}$. Following recent results of the first two authors on the Frobenius non-splitting of certain excellent $F$-pure rings, in this paper we use the notion of solidity to systematically study the notion of excellence, with an emphasis on $F$-singularities. We show that for rings $R$ essentially of finite type over complete local rings of characteristic $p$, reducedness implies t…
Let I be an m-primary ideal of a Noetherian local ring (R,m) of positive dimension. The coefficient $e_1(A)$ of the Hilbert polynomial of an I-admissible filtration A is called the Chern number of A. The Positivity Conjecture of Vasconcelos for the Chern number of the integral closure filtration ${\bar{I^n}}$ is proved for a 2-dimensional complete local domain and more generally for any analytically unramified local ring R whose integral closure in its total ring of fractions is Cohen-Macaulay as an R-module. It is proved that if I is a parameter ideal then the Chern number of the I-adic filtr…
Let $X:=\mathrm{Spec}(R)$ be an affine Noetherian scheme, and $\mathcal{M} \subset \mathcal{N}$ be a pair of finitely generated $R$-modules. Denote their Rees algebras by $\mathcal{R}(\mathcal{M})$ and $\mathcal{R}(\mathcal{N})$. Let $\mathcal{N}^{n}$ be the $n$th homogeneous component of $\mathcal{R}(\mathcal{N})$ and let $\mathcal{M}^{n}$ be the image of the $n$th homegeneous component of $\mathcal{R}(\mathcal{M})$ in $\mathcal{N}^n$. Denote by $\overline{\mathcal{M}^{n}}$ be the integral closure of $\mathcal{M}^{n}$ in $\mathcal{N}^{n}$. We prove that $\mathrm{Ass}_{X}(\mathcal{N}^{n}/\over…
We characterize the ideals $I$ of $\mathcal O_n$ of finite colength whose integral closure is equal to the integral closure of an ideal generated by pure monomials. This characterization, which is motivated by an inequality proven by Demailly and Pham, is given in terms of the log canonical threshold of $I$ and the sequence of mixed multiplicities of $I$.
Embedded principalization of ideals in smooth schemes, also known as Log-resolutions of ideals, play a central role in algebraic geometry. If two sheaves of ideals, say $I_1$ and $I_2$, over a smooth scheme $V$ have the same integral closure, it is well known that Log-resolution of one of them induces a Log-resolution of the other. On the other hand, in case $V$ is smooth over a field of characteristic zero, an algorithm of desingularization provides, for each sheaf of ideals, a unique Log-resolution. In this paper we show that algorithms of desingularization define the same Log-resolution for…
Let $R$ be the ring of $S$-integers in a number field $K$. Let $\mathcal{B}=\{β, β^{\ast}\}$ be the multi-set of roots of a nonzero quadratic polynomial over $R$. There are varieties $V(\mathcal{B})_{N,k}$ defined over $R$ parametrizing periodic continued fractions $[b_1,\ldots , b_N,\overline{a_1,\ldots ,a_k}]$ for $β$ or $β^{\ast}$. We study the $R$-points on these varieties, finding contrasting behavior according to whether groups of units are infinite or not. If $R$ is the rational integers or the ring of integers in an imaginary quadratic field, we prove that the $R$-points of $V(\mathcal…
We show that on integral normal separated schemes whose function field is separably closed, for each pair of points the intersection of the resulting local schemes is local. This extends a result of Artin from rings to schemes. The argument relies on the existence of certain modifications in inverse limits. As an application, we show that Čech cohomology coincides with sheaf cohomology for the Nisnevich topology. Along the way, we generalize the characterization of contractible curves on surfaces by negative-definiteness of the intersection matrix to higher dimensions, using bigness of inverti…
An important step in the calculation of the triply graded link homology theory of Khovanov and Rozansky is the determination of the Hochschild homology of Soergel bimodules for SL(n). We present a geometric model for this Hochschild homology for any simple group G, as equivariant intersection homology of B x B-orbit closures in G. We show that, in type A these orbit closures are equivariantly formal for the conjugation T-action. We use this fact to show that in the case where the corresponding orbit closure is smooth, this Hochschild homology is an exterior algebra over a polynomial ring on ge…
