Motivated by the polynuclear growth model, we consider a Brownian bridge b(t) with b(\pm T)=0 conditioned to stay above the semicircle c_T(t)=\sqrtT^2-t^2. In the limit of large T, the fluctuation scale of b(t)-c_T(t) is T^{1/3} and its time-correlation scale is T^{2/3}. We prove that, in the sense of weak convergence of path measures, the conditioned Brownian bridge, when properly rescaled, converges to a stationary diffusion process with a drift explicitly given in terms of Airy functions. The dependence on the reference point t=τT, τ\in(-1,1), is only through the second derivative of c_T(t) at t=τT. We also prove a corresponding result where instead of the semicircle the barrier is a parabola of height T^γ, γ>1/2. The fluctuation scale is then T^{(2-γ)/3}. More general conditioning shapes are briefly discussed.
We derive integral formulas, involving the Airy function, for moments of the time a two-sided Brownian motion with parabolic drift attains its maximum.
We study the first exit time of a multi-dimensional fractional Brownian motion from unbounded domains. In particular, we are interested in the upper tail of the corresponding distribution when the domain is parabola-shaped.
We study the maximum of a Brownian motion with a parabolic drift; this is a random variable that often occurs as a limit of the maximum of discrete processes whose expectations have a maximum at an interior point. We give series expansions and integral formulas for the distribution and the first two moments, together with numerical values to high precision.
We study the Hardy-Hénon parabolic equations on $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ ($N=2, 3$) under the effect of an additive fractional Brownian noise with Hurst parameter $H>\max\left(1/2, N/4\right).$ We show local existence and uniqueness of a mid $L^{q}$-solution under suitable assumptions on $q$.
We prove that minimal graphs (other than planes) are parabolic in the sense that any bounded harmonic function is determined by its boundary values. The proof relies on using the coupling introduced in the author's earlier paper "A martingale approach to minimal surfaces" to show that Brownian motion on such a minimal graph almost surely strikes the boundary in finite time.
In the Reed-Frost model, an example of an SIR epidemic model, one can examine a statistic that counts the number of concurrently infected individuals. This statistic can be reformulated as a statistic on the \ER random graph $G(n,p)$. Within the critical window of Aldous and Martin-Löf, i.e. when $p = p(n) = n^{-1}+λn^{-4/3}$, the cumulative sum of this statistic converges weakly to the integral of a Brownian motion with parabolic drift. This same statistic exhibits a deterministic scaling limit when $p = (1+λ\varepsilon_n)/n$ whenever $\varepsilon_n\to 0$ and $n^{1/3}\varepsilon_n\to\infty$.
Let $B_s$ be a $d$-dimensional Brownian motion and $ω(dx)$ be an independent Poisson field on $\mathbb{R}^d$. The almost sure asymptotics for the logarithmic moment generating function [\log\math bb{E}_0\exp\biggl{\pmθ\int_0^t\bar{V}(B_s) ds\biggr}\qquad (t\to\infty)] are investigated in connection with the renormalized Poisson potential of the form [\bar{V}(x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}{\frac{1}{|y-x|^p}}[ω(dy)-dy],\qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^d.] The investigation is motivated by some practical problems arising from the models of Brownian motion in random media and from the parabolic Anderson models.
There has recently been much activity within the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class spurred by the construction of the canonical limiting object, the parabolic Airy sheet $\mathcal{S}:\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}$ [arXiv:1812.00309]. The parabolic Airy sheet provides a coupling of parabolic Airy$_2$ processes -- a universal limiting geodesic weight profile in planar last passage percolation models -- and a natural goal is to understand this coupling. Geodesic geometry suggests that the difference of two parabolic Airy$_2$ processes, i.e., a difference profile, encodes important structural inf…
\def\R{\mathbb R} We give a characterization of G-regularity for super-Brownian motion and the Brownian snake. More precisely, we define a capacity on $E=(0,\infty)\times \R^d$, which is not invariant by translation. We then prove that the hitting probability of a Borel set $A\subset E$ for the graph of the Brownian snake starting at $(0,0)$ is comparable, up to multiplicative constants, to its capacity. This implies that super-Brownian motion started at time 0 at the Dirac mass $δ_0$ hits immediately $A$ (that is $(0,0)$ is G-regular for $A^c$) if and only if its capacity is infinite. As a di…
A parameter estimation problem is considered for a diagonaliazable stochastic evolution equation using a finite number of the Fourier coefficients of the solution. The equation is driven by additive noise that is white in space and fractional in time with the Hurst parameter $H\geq 1/2$. The objective is to study asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimator as the number of the Fourier coefficients increases. A necessary and sufficient condition for consistency and asymptotic normality is presented in terms of the eigenvalues of the operators in the equation.
We introduce a class of interesting stochastic processes based on Brownian-time processes. These are obtained by taking Markov processes and replacing the time parameter with the modulus of Brownian motion. They generalize the iterated Brownian motion (IBM) of Burdzy and the Markov snake of Le Gall, and they introduce new interesting examples. After defining Brownian-time processes, we relate them to fourth order parabolic PDEs. We then study their exit problem as they exit nice domains in $\Rd$, and connect it to elliptic PDEs. We show that these processes have the peculiar property that they…
We consider the annealed asymptotics for the survival probability of Brownian motion among randomly distributed traps. The configuration of the traps is given by independent displacements of the lattice points. We determine the long time asymptotics of the logarithm of the survival probability up to a multiplicative constant. As applications, we show the Lifshitz tail effect of the density of states of the associated random Schrödinger operator and derive a quantitative estimate for the strength of intermittency in the Parabolic Anderson problem.
This paper presents our study of the asymptotic behavior of a two-component system of Brownian motions undergoing certain singular interactions. In particular, the system is a combination of two different types of particles and the mechanical properties and interaction parameters depend on the corresponding type of particles. We prove that the hydrodynamic limit of the empirical densities of two types is the solution of a certain quasi-linear parabolic partial differential equation known as the Maxwell-Stefan equation.
We analyze the rate of convergence of the local statistics of Dyson Brownian motion to the GOE/GUE for short times $t=o(1)$ with deterministic initial data V . Our main result states that if the density of states of $V$ is bounded both above and away from $0$ down to scales $\ell \ll t$ in a small interval of size $G \gg t$ around an energy $E_0$, then the local statistics coincide with the GOE/GUE near the energy $E_0$ after time $t$. Our methods are partly based on the idea of coupling two Dyson Brownian motions from [6], the parabolic regularity result of [15], and the eigenvalue rigidity r…
In this paper we introduce and study Brownian motion on state spaces with varying dimension. Starting with a concrete case of such state spaces that models a big square with a flag pole, we construct a Brownian motion on it and study how heat propagates on such a space. We derive sharp two-sided global estimates on its transition density functions (also called heat kernel). These two-sided estimates are of Gaussian type, but the measure on the underlying state space does not satisfy volume doubling property. Parabolic Harnack inequality fails for such a process. Nevertheless, we show Holder re…
We describe generalized Brownian motion related to parabolic equation systems from a logical point of view, i.e., as a generalization of Anderson's random walk. The connection to classical spaces is based on the Loeb measure. It seems that the construction of Roux in [11] is the only attempt in the literature to define generalized Brownian motion related to parabolic systems with coupled second order terms, where Lamé's equation of elastic mechanics is considered as an example. In this paper we provide an exact construction from a logical point of view in a more general situation. A Feynman-Ka…
This note extends the results in [8] to construct the rough super-Brownian motion on finite volume with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The backbone of this study is the convergence of discrete approximations of the parabolic Anderson model (PAM) on a box.
We establish the Brownian bridge asymptotics for a scaled self-avoiding walk conditioned on arriving to a far away point $n \vec{a}$ for $\vec{a}$ in $Z^d$, as $n$ increases to infinity.
We show that, under certain smoothness conditions, a Brownian martingale at a fixed time can be represented as an exponential of its value at a later time. The time-dependent generator of this exponential operator is equal to one half times the Malliavin derivative. This result can also be seen as a generalization of the semi-group theory of parabolic partial differential equations to the parabolic path-dependent partial differential equations introduced by Dupire (2009) and Cont and Founié (2011). The exponential operator can be calculated explicitly in a series expansion, which resembles the…
It was shown in Groeneboom (1983) that the least concave majorant of one-sided Brownian motion without drift can be characterized by a jump process with independent increments, which is the inverse of the process of slopes of the least concave majorant. This result can be used to prove the result of Sparre Andersen (1954) that the number of vertices of the smallest concave majorant of the empirical distribution function of a sample of size n from the uniform distribution on [0,1] is asymptotically normal, with an asymptotic expectation and variance which are both of order log n. A similar (Mar…
In this paper we study the linear stochastic heat equation, also known as parabolic Anderson model, in multidimension driven by a Gaussian noise which is white in time and it has a correlated spatial covariance. Examples of such covariance include the Riesz kernel in any dimension and the covariance of the fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in (\frac 14, \frac 12]$ in dimension one. First we establish the existence of a unique mild solution and we derive a Feynman-Kac formula for its moments using a family of independent Brownian bridges and assuming a general integrability con…
We consider the linear stochastic heat equation on $\mathbb{R}^\ell$, driven by a Gaussian noise which is colored in time and space. The spatial covariance satisfies general assumptions and includes examples such as the Riesz kernel in any dimension and the covariance of the fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in (\frac 14, \frac 12]$ in dimension one. First we establish the existence of a unique mild solution and we derive a Feynman-Kac formula for its moments using a family of independent Brownian bridges and assuming a general integrability condition on the initial data. In t…
In this paper, we prove a convergence theorem for singular perturbations problems for a class of fully nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations with ergodic structures. The limit function is represented as the viscosity solution to a fully nonlinear degenerate PDEs. Our approach is mainly based on G-stochastic analysis argument. As a byproduct, we also establish the averaging principle for stochastic differential equations driven by G-Brownian motion with two time-scales. The results extend Khasminskii's averaging principle to nonlinear case.
We construct a $K$-rough path above either a space-time or a spatial fractional Brownian motion, in any space dimension $d$. This allows us to provide an interpretation and a unique solution for the corresponding parabolic Anderson model, understood in the renormalized sense. We also consider the case of a spatial fractional noise.
We prove a Chung-type law of the iterated logarithm for a multiparameter extension of the fractional Brownian motion which is not increment stationary. This multiparameter fractional Brownian motion behaves very differently at the origin and away from the axes, which also appears in the Hausdorff dimension of its range and in the measure of its pointwise Hölder exponents. A functional version of this Chung-type law is also provided.
We study a free boundary problem for a parabolic partial differential equation in which the solution is coupled to the moving boundary through an integral constraint. The problem arises as the hydrodynamic limit of an interacting particle system involving branching Brownian motion with selection, the so-called Brownian bees model which is studied in a companion paper. In this paper we prove existence and uniqueness of the solution to the free boundary problem, and we characterise the behaviour of the solution in the large time limit.
We derive a nonlinear integral equation to calculate Root's solution of the Skorokhod embedding problem for atom-free target measures. We then use this to efficiently generate bounded time-space increments of Brownian motion and give a parabolic version of Muller's classic "Random walk over spheres" algorithm.
We consider an approach to credit risk in which the information about the time of bankruptcy is modelled using a Brownian bridge that starts at zero and is conditioned to equal zero when the default occurs. This raises the question whether the default can be foreseen by observing the evolution of the bridge process. Unlike in most standard models for credit risk, we allow the distribution of the default time to be singular. Using a well known fact from parabolic potential theory, we provide a sufficient condition for its predictability.
In this paper, we study the well-posedness of multi-dimensional backward stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion ($G$-BSDEs) with diagonal generators, the $z$ parts of whose $l$-th components only depend on the $l$-th columns. The existence and uniqueness of solutions are obtained via a contraction argument for $Y$ component and a backward iteration of local solutions. Furthermore, we show that, the solution of multi-dimensional $G$-BSDE in a Markovian framework provides a probabilistic formula for the viscosity solution of a system of nonlinear parabolic partial differ…
Suppose a solid has a crack filled with a gas. If the crack reaches the surrounding medium, how long does it take the gas to diffuse out of the crack? Iterated Brownian motion serves as a model for diffusion in a crack. If τis the first exit time of iterated Brownian motion from the solid, then P(τ>t) can be viewed as a measurement of the amount of contaminant left in the crack at time t. We determine the large time asymptotics of P(τ>t) for both bounded and unbounded sets. We also discuss a strange connection between iterated Brownian motion and the parabolic operator {1/8}Δ^2-\frac{\partial}…
We introduce the notion of pathwise entropy solutions for a class of degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations with non-isotropic nonlinearity and fluxes with rough time dependence and prove their well-posedness. In the case of Brownian noise and periodic boundary conditions, we prove that the pathwise entropy solutions converge to their spatial average and provide an estimate on the rate of convergence. The third main result of the paper is a new regularization result in the spirit of averaging lemmata. This work extends both the framework of pathwise entropy solutions for stochastic scalar c…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of a mild solution for a class of non-autonomous parabolic mixed stochastic partial differential equations defined on a bounded open subset $D \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and involving standard and fractional $L^2(D)$-valued Brownian motions. We assume that the coefficients are homogeneous, Lipschitz continuous and the coefficient at the fractional Brownian motion is an affine function.
In this work, we prove a version of Hörmander's theorem for a stochastic evolution equation driven by a trace-class fractional Brownian motion with Hurst exponent $\frac{1}{2} < H < 1$ and an analytic semigroup on a given separable Hilbert space. In contrast to the classical finite-dimensional case, the Jacobian operator in typical solutions of parabolic stochastic PDEs is not invertible which causes a severe difficulty in expressing the Malliavin matrix in terms of an adapted process. Under a Hörmander's bracket condition and some algebraic constraints on the vector fields combined with the r…
We consider a branching Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove that there exists a random subset $Θ$ of $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ such that the limit of the derivative martingale exists simultaneously for all directions $θ\in Θ$ almost surely. This allows us to define a random measure on $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ whose density is given by the derivative martingale. The proof is based on first moment arguments: we approximate the martingale of interest by a series of processes, which do not take into account the particles that travelled too far away. We show that these new processes are uniformly integr…
Let $B^{H}$ be a fractional Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ of Hurst index $H\in\left(0,1\right)$, $f:\left[0,1\right]\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{d}$ a Borel function and $A\subset\left[0,1\right]$ a Borel set. We provide sufficient conditions for the image $(B^{H}+f)(A)$ to have a positive Lebesgue measure or to have a non-empty interior. This is done through the study of the properties of the density of the occupation measure of $(B^{H}+f)$. Precisely, we prove that if the parabolic Hausdorff dimension of the graph of $f$ is greater than $Hd$, then the density is a square integrable funct…

Let $\{X_n\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ be a sequence of i.i.d. random variables in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Let $S_k=X_1+...+X_k$ and $Y_n(t)$ be the continuous process on $[0,1]$ for which $Y_n(k/n)=S_k/\sqrt{n}$ $k=1,...,n$ and which is linearly interpolated elsewhere. The paper gives a generalization of results of Belkin, \cite{B72} on the weak limit laws of $Y_n(t)$ conditioned to stay away from some small sets. In particular, it is shown that the diffusive limit of the random walk meander on $\mathbb Z^d: d\ge 2$ is the Brownian motion.
We give meaning to linear and semi-linear (possibly degenerate) parabolic partial differential equations with (affine) linear rough path noise and establish stability in a rough path metric. In the case of enhanced Brownian motion (Brownian motion with its Lévy area) as rough path noise the solution coincides with the standard variational solution of the SPDE.
Excursion reflected Brownian motion (ERBM) is a strong Markov process defined in a finitely connected domain $D \subset \mathbb{C}$ that behaves like a Brownian motion away from the boundary of $D$ and picks a point according to harmonic measure from infinity to reflect from every time it hits a boundary component. We give a construction of ERBM using its conformal invariance and develop the basic theory of its harmonic functions. One important reason for studying ERBM is the hope that it will be a useful tool in the study of SLE in multiply connected domains. To this end, we develop the basic…
Let $X$ be a fractional Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^d$. For any Borel function $f:[0,1] \to \mathbb{R}^d$, we express the Hausdorff dimension of the image and the graph of $X+f$ in terms of $f$. This is new even for the case of Brownian motion and continuous $f$, where it was known that this dimension is almost surely constant. The expression involves an adaptation of the parabolic dimension previously used by Taylor and Watson to characterize polarity for the heat equation. In the case when the graph of $f$ is a self-affine McMullen-Bedford carpet, we obtain an explicit formula for the dim…
Let H be a Hilbert space and E a Banach space. We set up a theory of stochastic integration of L(H,E)-valued functions with respect to H-cylindrical Liouville fractional Brownian motions (fBm) with arbitrary Hurst parameter in the interval (0,1). For Hurst parameters in (0,1/2) we show that a function F:(0,T)\to L(H,E) is stochastically integrable with respect to an H-cylindrical Liouville fBm if and only if it is stochastically integrable with respect to an H-cylindrical fBm with the same Hurst parameter. As an application we show that second-order parabolic SPDEs on bounded domains in \mathb…
Excursion reflected Brownian motion (ERBM) is a strong Markov process defined in a finitely connected domain $D \subset \C$ that behaves like a Brownian motion away from the boundary of $D$ and picks a point according to harmonic measure from infinity to reflect from every time it hits a boundary component. We give a new construction of ERBM using its conformal invariance and discuss the relationship between the Poisson kernel and Green's function for ERBM and conformal maps into certain classes of finitely connected domains. One important reason for studying ERBM is the hope that it will be a…
It is well known that, starting with finite mass, the super-Brownian motion dies out in finite time. The goal of this article is to show that with some additional work, one can prove finite time die-out for two types of systems of stochastic differential equations on the lattice Z^d. Our first system involves the heat equation on the lattice Z^d, with a nonlinear noise term u(t,x)^gamma dB_x(t), with 1/2 <= gamma < 1. The B_x are independent Brownian motions. When gamma = 1/2, the measure which puts mass u(t,x) at x is a super-random walk and it is well-known that the process becomes extinct i…
We compute analytically the probability $S(t)$ that a set of $N$ Brownian paths do not cross each other and stay below a moving boundary $g(τ)= W \sqrtτ$ up to time $t$. We show that for large $t$ it decays as a power law $S(t) \sim t^{- β(N,W)}$. The decay exponent $β(N,W)$ is obtained as the ground state energy of a quantum system of $N$ non-interacting fermions in a harmonic well in the presence of an infinite hard wall at position $W$. Explicit expressions for $β(N,W)$ are obtained in various limits of $N$ and $W$, in particular for large $N$ and large $W$. We obtain the joint distribution…
The issue of giving an explicit description of the flow of information concerning the time of bankruptcy of a company (or a state) arriving on the market is tackled by defining a bridge process starting from zero and conditioned to be equal to zero when the default occurs. This enables to catch some empirical facts on the behavior of financial markets: when the bridge process is away from zero, investors can be relatively sure that the default will not happen immediately. However, when the information process is close to zero, market agents should be aware of the risk of an imminent default. I…
We study a regularization by noise phenomenon for the continuous parabolic Anderson model with a potential shifted along paths of fractional Brownian motion. We demonstrate that provided the Hurst parameter is chosen sufficiently small, this shift allows to establish well-posedness and stability to the corresponding problem - without the need of renormalization - in any dimension. We moreover provide a robustified Feynman-Kac type formula for the unique solution to the regularized problem building upon regularity estimates for the local time of fractional Brownian motion as well as non-linear …
We study the impact on shape parameters of an underlying Bienaymé-Galton-Watson branching process (height, width and first hitting time), of having a non-spatial branching mechanism with infinite variance. Aiming at providing a comparative study of the spread of an epidemics whose dynamics is given by the modulus of a branching Brownian motion (BBM) we then consider spatial branching processes in dimension d, not necessarily integer. The underlying branching mechanism is then either a binary branching model or one presenting infinite variance. In particular we evaluate the chance p(x) of being…
