We express the signature ${\rm Sign}(SP^m_G(M))$ of the symmetric product $SP^n(M)$ of an (open) surface $M$ in terms of the cycle index $Z(G;\bar x)$ of $G$, a polynomial which originally appeared in P{\' o}lya enumeration theory of graphs, trees, chemical structures etc. The computations are used to show that there exist punctured Riemann surfaces $M_{g,k}, M_{g',k'}$ such that the manifolds $SP^{m}(M_{g,k})$ and $SP^{m}(M_{g',k'})$ are often not homeomorphic, although they always have the same homotopy type provided $2g+k = 2g'+k'$ and $k,k'\geq 1$.
Chessboard complexes and their relatives have been one of important recurring themes of topological combinatorics. Closely related ``cycle-free chessboard complexes'' have been recently introduced by Ault and Fiedorowicz as a tool for computing symmetric analogues of the cyclic homology of algebras. We study connectivity properties of these complexes and prove a result that confirms a strengthened conjecture of Ault and Fiedorowicz.
Harer-Zagier generating functions for Euler characteristics of moduli spaces of curves contain $n$-necklace polynomials. Taylor expansions for these polynomials depend on numbers of solutions of Cohen semilinear congruences.
The edge-Wiener index $W_e(G)$ of a connected graph $G$ is the sum of distances between all pairs of edges of $G$. A connected graph $G$ is said to be a cactus if each of its blocks is either a cycle or an edge. Let $\mathcal{G}_{n,t}$ denote the class of all cacti with $n$ vertices and $t$ cycles. In this paper, the upper bound and lower bound on the edge-Wiener index of graphs in $\mathcal{G}_{n,t}$ are identified and the corresponding extremal graphs are characterized.
Let $G$ be a non-bipartite graph which does not contain any odd cycle of length at most $2k+1$. In this paper, we determine the maximum $Q$-index of $G$ if its order is fixed, and the corresponding extremal graph is uniquely characterized. Moreover, if the size of $G$ is given, the maximum $Q$-index of $G$ and the unique extremal graph are also proved.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of the complete cycle index and discuss a relation with the complete weight enumerator in coding theory. This work was motivated by Cameron's lecture note "Polynomial aspects of codes, matroids and permutation groups."
Let $\mathcal{C}_{n,k}$ be the family of all cacti with $k$ cycles and $n\geq4$ vertices. In the present note, the element of the class $\mathcal{C}_{n,k}$ having minimum augmented Zagreb index ($AZI$) is characterized. Moreover, some structural properties of the graph(s) having maximum $AZI$ value over the collection $\mathcal{C}_{n,0}$, are also reported.
In this paper we define cycle-star graph CSk,n-k to be a graph on n vertices consisting of the cycle of length k and n-k leafs appended to the same vertex of the cycle. Also, we define cycle-path graph CPk,n-k to be a graph on n vertices consisting of the cycle of length k and of path on n-k vertices whose one end is linked to a vertex on a cycle. We establish that cycle-star graph CS3,n-3 is the only maximal graph with respect to additively weighted Harary index among all unicyclic graphs on n vertices, while cycle-path graph CP3,n-3 is the only minimal unicyclic graph (here n must be at leas…
Following Penrose, we introduce a family of graph functions defined in terms of contractions of certain products of symmetric tensors along the edges of a graph. Special cases of these functions enumerate edge colorings and cycles of arbitrary length in graphs (in particular, Hamiltonian cycles).
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite undirected graph. Orient the edges of $G$ in an arbitrary way. A $2$-cycle on $G$ is a function $d : E^2\to \mathbb{Z}$ such for each edge $e$, $d(e, \cdot)$ and $d(\cdot, e)$ are circulations on $G$, and $d(e, f) = 0$ whenever $e$ and $f$ have a common vertex. We show that each $2$-cycle is a sum of three special types of $2$-cycles: cycle-pair $2$-cycles, Kuratowski $2$-cycles, and quad $2$-cycles. In case that the graph is Kuratowski connected, we show that each $2$-cycle is a sum of cycle-pair $2$-cycles and at most one Kuratowski $2$-cycle. Furthermore, if $G$ is…
Let G be a graph of order n and let q(G) be that largest eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian of G. In this note it is shown that if k>1 and q(G)>=n+2k-2, then G contains cycles of length l whenever 2<l<2k+3. This bound is asymptotically tight. It implies an asymptotic solution to a recent conjecture about the maximum q(G) of a graph G with no cycle of a specified length.
The dichromatic number of a digraph $D$ is the minimum number of colors of a vertex coloring of $D$ such that $D$ has no monochromatic cycles. The Hajós join were recently extended to digraphs (using the dichromatic number) by J. Bang-Jensen et. al. and Hajós (directed) operations is a tool to obtain r-(di)chromatic (di)graphs. J. Bang-Jensen et. al. posed in 2020 the problem of how to obtain the symmetric cycle of length 5 from symmetric cycles of length 3. We recently solved this problem by applying a genetic algorithm. In this article, a procedure is presented to construct any odd symmetric…
We prove that the Mahonian-Stirling pairs of permutation statistics $(\sor, \cyc)$ and $(\inv, \mathrm{rlmin})$ are equidistributed on the set of permutations that correspond to arrangements of $n$ non-atacking rooks on a Ferrers board with $n$ rows and $n$ columns. The proofs are combinatorial and use bijections between matchings and Dyck paths and a new statistic, sorting index for matchings, that we define. We also prove a refinement of this equidistribution result which describes the minimal elements in the permutation cycles and the right-to-left minimum letters. Moreover, we define a sor…
We define a new basis of the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions by lifting the cycle-index polynomials of symmetric groups to noncommutative polynomials with coefficients in the algebra of free quasi-symmetric functions, and then projecting the coefficients to $QSym$. By duality, we obtain a basis of noncommutative symmetric functions, for which a product formula and a recurrence in the form of a combinatorial complex are obtained. This basis allows to identify noncommutative symmetric functions with the quotient of FQSym induced by the pattern-replacement relation $321 \equiv 231$ and $312 …
We consider the group action of the automorphism group $\I_n=\aut(\Zz_n)$ on the set $\Zz_n$, that is the set of residue classes modulo $n$. Clearly, this group action provides a representation of $\I_n$ as a permutation group acting on $n$ points. One problem to be solved regarding this group action is to find its cycle index. Once it is found, there appears a vast class of related enumerative and computational problems with interesting applications. We provided the cycle index of specified group action in two ways. One of them is more abstract and hence compact, while another one is basicall…
We present statistics on the decompositions (with respect to a distinguished symmetric 2t-cycle) of vertices of the hypercube graph, whose negative parts are covered by two subsets of the ground set {1,...,t} of the corresponding oriented matroid.
This paper gives tight upper bounds on the largest eigenvalue q(G) of the signless Laplacian of graphs with no 4-cycle and no 5-cycle. If n is odd, let F_{n} be the friendship graph of order n; if n is even, let F_{n} be F_{n-1} with an edge hanged to its center. It is shown that if G is a graph of order n, with no 4-cycle, then q(G)<q(F_{n}), unless G=F_{n}. Let S_{n,k} be the join of a complete graph of order k and an independent set of order n-k. It is shown that if G is a graph of order n, with no 5-cycle, then q(G)<q(S_{n,2}), unless G=S_{n,k}. It is shown that these results are significa…
If V is the vertex sequence of a symmetric 2t-cycle in the hypercube graph with the vertices {1,-1}^t, then for any vertex T of the graph there exists a unique inclusion-minimal subset of V such that T is the sum of its elements. We present a simple combinatorial statistic on decompositions of vertices of the hypercube graphs with respect to symmetric cycles and describe their basic metric properties.
The distinguishing number (index) $D(G)$ ($D'(G)$) of a graph $G$ is the least integer $d$ such that $G$ has an vertex (edge) labeling with $d$ labels that is preserved only by the trivial automorphism. It is known that for every graph $G$ we have $D'(G) \leq D(G) + 1$. The complete characterization of finite trees $T$ with $D'(T)=D(T)+ 1$ has been given recently. In this note we show that if $G$ is a finite connected graph with at least one cycle, then $D'(G)\leq D(G)$. Finally, we characterize all connected graphs for which $D'(G) \leq D(G)$.
Let $q\left( G\right) $ be the $Q$-index (the largest eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian) of $G$. Let $S_{n,k}$ be the graph obtained by joining each vertex of a complete graph of order $k$ to each vertex of an independent set of order $n-k.$ The main result of this paper is the following theorem: Let $k\geq3,$ $n\geq110k^{2},$ and $G$ be a graph of order $n$. If $G$ has no $C_{2k+1},$ then $q\left( G\right) <q\left( S_{n,k}\right) ,$ unless $G=S_{n,k}.$ This result proves the odd case of the conjecture in [M.A.A. de Freitas, V. Nikiforov, and L. Patuzzi, Maxima of the $Q$-index: forbidden $…
We present statistics on the decompositions (with respect to a distinguished symmetric 2t-cycle) of vertices of the hypercube graph, whose negative parts are regarded as disjoint unions of two subsets of the ground set {1,...,t} of the corresponding oriented matroid.
We study the class of simple graphs $\mathcal{G}^*$ for which every pair of distinct odd cycles intersect in at most one edge. We give a structural characterization of the graphs in $\mathcal{G}^*$ and prove that every $G \in \mathcal{G}^*$ satisfies the list-edge-coloring conjecture. When $Δ(G) \geq 4$, we in fact prove a stronger result about kernel-perfect orientations in $L(G)$ which implies that $G$ is $(mΔ(G):m)$-edge-choosable and $Δ(G)$-edge-paintable for every $m \geq 1$.
The problem of finding, in an edge-weighted bidirected graph $G=(V,E)$, a cycle with minimum mean weight of its edges generalizes similar problems for both directed and undirected graphs. (The problem is considered in two variants: for the cycles without repeated edges and for the cycles without repeated nodes.) In this note we develop an algorithm to solve this problem in $O(V^2 \min(V^2, E\log V))$-time (to compare: the complexity of an improved version of Barahona's algorithm for undirected cycles is $O(V^4)$). Our algorithm is based on a certain general approach to minimum mean problems an…
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and let $q\left( G\right) $ be the largest eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian of $G$. Let $S_{n,k}$ be the graph obtained by joining each vertex of a complete graph of order $k$ to each vertex of an independent set of order $n-k;$ and let $S_{n,k}^{+}$ be the graph obtained by adding an edge to $S_{n,k}.$ It is shown that if $k\geq2,$ $n\geq400k^{2},$ and $G$ is a graph of order $n,$ with no cycle of length $2k+2,$ then $q\left( G\right) <q\left( S_{n,k}^{+}\right) ,$ unless $G=S_{n,k}^{+}.$ This result completes the proof of a conjecture of de Freitas, Nikifo…
We examine the necessary and sufficient conditions for a complete symmetric equipartite digraph $K_{n[m]}^\ast$ with $n$ parts of size $m$ to admit a resolvable decomposition into directed cycles of length $t$. We show that the obvious necessary conditions are sufficient for $m,n,t \ge 2$ in each of the following four cases: (i) $m(n-1)$ is even; (ii) $\gcd(m,n) \not\in \{1,3\}$; (iii) $\gcd(m,n)=1$ and $4|n$ or $6|n$; and (iv) $\gcd(m,n)=3$, and if $n=6$, then $p|m$ for a prime $p \le 37$.
For a fixed prime $p$, we consider a filtration of the commuting complex of elements of order $p$ in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. The filtration is obtained by imposing successively relaxed bounds on the number of disjoint $p$-cycles in the cycle decomposition of the elements. We show that each term in the filtration becomes highly acyclic as $n$ increases. We use $\mathbf{FI}$-modules in the proof.
Using symmetric function theory, we study the cycle structure and increasing subsequence structure of permutations after various shuffling methods, emphasizing the role of Cauchy type identities and the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. One consequence is a cycle index for riffle shuffles when one deals from the bottom of the deck; conclusions are drawn concerning the distribution of fixed points and the asymptotic distribution of cycle structure. In studying cycle structure of unimodal permutations and their generalizations we are led to an interesting variation of the RSK corresponden…
We consider decompositions of topes of the oriented matroid realizable as the arrangement of coordinate hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^{2^t}$, with respect to a distinguished symmetric $2\cdot 2^t$-cycle in its hypercube graph of topes $\boldsymbol{H}(2^t,2)$. We seek interpretations of such decompositions in the context of subset families on the ground set $E_t:=\{1,\ldots,t\}$ and of the families of their blocking sets, in the context of clutters on $E_t$ and of their blockers.
For a graph $G$ with vertex set $V_{G}$ and edge set $E_{G}$, the symmetric division deg index is defined as $SDD(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E_{G}}(\frac{d_{u}}{d_{v}}+\frac{d_{v}}{d_{u}})$, where $d_{u}$ denotes the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. In 2018, Furtula et al. confirmed the quality of SDD index exceeds that of some more popular VDB indices, in particular that of the GA index. They shown a close connection between the SDD index and the earlier well-established GA index. Thus it is meaningful and important to consider the chemical and mathematical properties of the SDD index. In this paper, …
Several cycle lexicographical orders are found to describe the relative likelihood of elements of the random walks on the symmetric group generated by the conjugacy classes of transpositions, 3-cycles, and n-cycles. Spectral analysis finds sufficient time for the orders to hold. This partially answers a conjecture that the n-cycles are the least likely elements of the transposition walk on the symmetric group. A likelihood order contributes to understanding the total variation distance and separation distance for a random walk.
We extend the exponential formula by Bender and Canfield (1996), which relates log-concavity and the cycle index polynomials. The extension clarifies the log-convexity relation. The proof is by noticing the property of a compound Poisson distribution together with its moment generating function. We also give a combinatorial proof of extended "log-convex part" referring Bender and Canfield's approach, where the formula by Bruijn and Erdös (1953) is additionally exploited. The combinatorial approach yields richer structural results more than log-convexity. Furthermore, we consider normal and bin…
Using the Berele/Remmel/Kerov/Vershik variation of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, we study the cycle and increasing subsequence structure after various methods of shuffling. One consequence is a cycle index for shuffles like: cut a deck into roughly two equal piles, thoroughly mix the first pile and then riffle it with the second pile. Conclusions are drawn concerning the distribution of fixed points and the asymptotic distribution of cycle structure. An upper bound on the convergence rate is given. Connections are made with extended Schur functions and with work of Baik and Rain…
A Hamilton decomposition of a graph is a partitioning of its edge set into disjoint spanning cycles. The existence of such decompositions is known for all hypercubes of even dimension $2n$. We give a decomposition for the case $n = 2^a3^b$ that is highly symmetric in the sense that every cycle can be derived from every other cycle just by permuting the axes. We conjecture that a similar decomposition exists for every n.
We find closed form formulas for the Kemeny's constant and the Kirchhoff index for the cluster $G_1\{G_2\}$ of two highly symmetric graphs $G_1$, $G_2$, in terms of the parameters of the original graphs. We also discuss some necessary conditions for a graph to be highly symmetric.
The symmetric inverse monoid, SIM(n), is the set of all partial one-to-one mappings from the set {1, 2, ... , n} to itself under the operation of composition. Earlier research on the symmetric inverse monoid delineated the process for determining whether an element of SIM(n) has a kth root. The problem of enumerating kth roots of a given element of SIM(n) has since been posed, which is solved in this work. In order to find the number of kth roots of an element, all that is needed is to know the cycle and path structure of the element. Conveniently, the cycle and cycle-free components may be co…
The acyclic chromatic index of a graph $G$ is the least number of colors needed to properly color its edges so that none of its cycles is bichromatic. In this work, we show that $2Δ-1$ colors are sufficient to produce such a coloring, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph. In contrast with most extant randomized algorithmic approaches to the chromatic index, where the algorithms presuppose enough colors to guarantee properness deterministically and use randomness only to deal with the bichromatic cycles, our randomized, Moser-type algorithm produces a not necessarily proper random color…
In symmetric groups, studies of permutation factorizations or triples of permutations satisfying certain conditions have a long history. One particular interesting case is when two of the involved permutations are long cycles, for which many surprisingly simple formulas have been obtained. Here we combinatorially enumerate the pairs of long cycles whose product has a given cycle-type and separates certain elements, extending several lines of studies, and we obtain general quantitative relations. As consequences, in a unified way, we recover a number of results expecting simple combinatorial pr…
The concept of resistance distance was first proposed by Klein and Randić. The Kirchhoff index $Kf(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the sum of resistance distance between all pairs of vertices in $G$. A connected graph $G$ is called a cactus if each block of $G$ is either an edge or a cycle. Let $Cat(n;t)$ be the set of connected cacti possessing $n$ vertices and $t$ cycles, where $0\leq t \leq \lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\rfloor$. In this paper, the maximum kirchhoff index of cacti are characterized, as well as the corresponding extremal graph.
We prove that the number of Hamiltonian paths on the complement of an acyclic digraph is equal to the number of cycle covers. As an application, we obtain a new expansion of the chromatic symmetric function of incomparability graphs in terms of elementary symmetric functions. Analysis of some of the combinatorial implications of this expansion leads to three bijections involving acyclic orientations.
We investigate the representation of a symmetric group $S_n$ on the homology of its Quillen complex at a prime $p$. For homology groups in small codimension, we derive an explicit formula for this representation in terms of the representations of symmetric groups on homology groups of $p$-uniform hypergraph matching complexes. We conjecture an explicit formula for the representation of $S_n$ on the top homology group of the corresponding hypergraph matching complex when $n \equiv 1 \bmod p$. Our conjecture follows from work of Bouc when $p=2$, and we prove the conjecture when $p=3$.
The aim of this work is to obtain new inequalities for the variable symmetric division deg index $SDD_α(G) = \sum_{uv \in E(G)} (d_u^α/d_v^α+d_v^α/d_u^α)$, and to characterize graphs extremal with respect to them. Here, $uv$ denotes the edge of the graph $G$ connecting the vertices $u$ and $v$, $d_u$ is the degree of the vertex $u$, and $α\in \mathbb{R}$. Some of these inequalities generalize and improve previous results for the symmetric division deg index. In addition, we computationally apply the $SDD_α(G)$ index on random graphs and show that the ratio $\left\langle SDD_α(G) \right\rangle/…
Wiener index, defined as the sum of distances between all unordered pairs of vertices, is one of the most popular molecular descriptors. It is well known that among 2-vertex connected graphs on $n\ge 3$ vertices, the cycle $C_n$ attains the maximum value of Wiener index. We show that the second maximum graph is obtained from $C_n$ by introducing a new edge that connects two vertices at distance two on the cycle if $n\ne 6$. If $n\ge 11$, the third maximum graph is obtained from a $4$-cycle by connecting opposite vertices by a path of length $n-3$. We completely describe also the situation for …
We define a new integer invariant of a finite graph G, the freeness index, that measures the extent to which G can be embedded in the 3-sphere so that it and its subgraphs have ``simple" complements, i.e., complements which are homeomorphic to a connect-sum of handlebodies. We relate the freeness index to questions of embedding graphs into surfaces, in particular to the orientable cycle double cover conjecture. We show that a cubic graph satisfying the orientable double cycle cover conjecture has freeness index at least two.
Cycle is the simplest structure that brings redundant paths in network connectivity and feedback effects in network dynamics. Focusing on cycle structure, this paper defines a new matrix, named cycle number matrix, to represent cycle information of a network, and an index, named cycle ratio, to quantify the node importance. Experiments on real networks suggest that cycle ratio contains rich information in addition to well-known benchmark indices, for example, the node rankings by cycle ratio are largely different from rankings by degree, H-index, coreness, betweenness and articulation ranking,…
Cycle prefix digraphs have been proposed as an efficient model of symmetric interconnection networks for parallel architecture. It has been discovered that the cycle prefix networks have many attractive communication properties. In this paper, we determine the automorphism group of the cycle prefix digraphs. We show that the automorphism group of a cycle prefix digraph is isomorphic to the symmetric group on its underlying alphabet. Our method can be applied to other classes of graphs built on alphabets including the hypercube, the Kautz graph, and the de Bruijn graph.
We give a short proof, based on symmetric function theory, of a formula due to Goupil and Schaeffer, counting the number of factorizations of a cycle of maximal length in the symmetric group, into the product of two permutations of given conjugacy classes.
