The theory of ternary semigroups, groups and algebras is reformulated in the abstract arrow language. Then using the reversing arrow ansatz we define ternary comultiplication, bialgebras and Hopf algebras and investigate their properties. The main property "to be binary derived" is considered in detail. The co-analog of Post theorem is formulated. It is shown that there exist 3 types of ternary coassociativity, 3 types of ternary counits and 2 types of ternary antipodes. Some examples are also presented.
We construct an universal enveloping algebra associated to the ternary extension of Lie (super)algebras called Lie algebra of order three. A Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem is proven is this context. It this then shown that this universal enveloping algebra can be endowed with a structure of Hopf algebra. The study of the dual of the universal enveloping algebra enables to define the parameters of the transformation of a Lie algebra of order three. It turns out that these variables are the variables which generate the three-exterior algebra.
A heap is a structure with a ternary operation which is intuitively a group with forgotten unit element. Quantum heaps are associative algebras with a ternary cooperation which are to the Hopf algebras what heaps are to groups, and, in particular, the category of copointed quantum heaps is isomorphic to the category of Hopf algebras. There is an intermediate structure of a cop in monoidal category which is in the case of vector spaces to a quantum heap about what is a coalgebra to a Hopf algebra. The representations of Hopf algebras make a rigid monoidal category. Similarly the representations…
The ribbon cocycle invariant is defined by means of a partition function using ternary cohomology of self-distributive structures (TSD) and colorings of ribbon diagrams of a framed link, following the same paradigm introduced by Carter, Jelsovsky, Kamada, Langfor and Saito in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 2003;355(10):3947-89, for the quandle cocycle invariant. In this article we show that the ribbon cocycle invariant is a quantum invariant. We do so by constructing a ribbon category from a TSD set whose twisting and braiding morphisms entail a given TSD $2$-cocycle. Then w…
General concept of ternary algebras is introduced in this article, along with several examples of its realization. Universal envelope of such algebras is defined, as well as the concept of tri-modules over ternary algebras. The universal differential calculus on these structures is then defined and its basic properties investigated.
We determine finite-dimensional Hopf algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, whose Hopf coradical is isomorphic to a non-pointed basic Hopf algebra of dimension $24$ and the infinitesimal braidings are indecomposable objects. In particular, we obtain families of new finite-dimensional Hopf algebras without the dual Chevalley property.
We classify finite-dimensional Hopf algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero whose Hopf coradcial is isomorphic to the smallest non-pointed basic Hopf algebra, under the assumption that the diagrams are strictly graded. In particular, we obtain some new Nichols algebras of non-diagonal type and new finite-dimensional Hopf algebras without the dual Chevalley property.
Let $m$ a positive integer, not divisible by 2,3,5,7. We generalize the classification of basic quasi-Hopf algebras over cyclic groups of prime order given in \cite{EG3} to the case of cyclic groups of order $m$. To this end, we introduce a family of non-semisimple radically graded quasi-Hopf algebras $A(H,s)$, constructed as subalgebras of Hopf algebras twisted by a quasi-Hopf twist, which are not twist equivalent to Hopf algebras. Any basic quasi-Hopf algebra over a cyclic group of order $m$ is either semisimple, or is twist equivalent to a Hopf algebra or a quasi-Hopf algebra of type $A(H,s…
Heaps are para-associative ternary operations bijectively exemplified by groups via the operation $(x,y,z) \mapsto x y^{-1} z$. They are also ternary self-distributive, and have a diagrammatic interpretation in terms of framed links. Motivated by these properties, we define para-associative and heap cohomology theories and also a ternary self-distributive cohomology theory with abelian heap coefficients. We show that one of the heap cohomologies is related to group cohomology via a long exact sequence. Moreover we construct maps between second cohomology groups of normalized group cohomology a…
In continuation of the article \cite{L} we classify all radically graded basic Hopf algebras of tame type over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0.
This is a contribution to the classification of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic 0. Concretely, we show that a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra whose Hopf coradical is basic is a lifting of a Nichols algebra of a semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld module and we explain how to classify Nichols algebras of this kind. We provide along the way new examples of Nichols algebras and Hopf algebras with finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension.
Polyadic systems and their representations are reviewed and a classification of general polyadic systems is presented. A new multiplace generalization of associativity preserving homomorphisms, a 'heteromorphism' which connects polyadic systems having unequal arities, is introduced via an explicit formula, together with related definitions for multiplace representations and multiactions. Concrete examples of matrix representations for some ternary groups are then reviewed. Ternary algebras and Hopf algebras are defined, and their properties are studied. At the end some ternary generalizations …
Multiplier Hopf algebroids are algebraic versions of quantum groupoids that generalize Hopf algebroids to the non-unital case and weak (multiplier) Hopf algebras to non-separable base algebras. The main structure maps of a multiplier Hopf algebroid are a left and a right comultiplication. We show that bijectivity of two associated canonical maps is equivalent to the existence of an antipode, discuss invertibility of the antipode, and present some examples and special cases.
An extended version of a series of lectures given at Bogota in december 2002. It consists in a presentation of some aspects of Connes' and Kreimer's work on renormalization in the context of general connected Hopf algebras, in particular Birkhoff decomposition and, in the graded case, the scattering-type formula.
It is shown in math.QA/0310253 that a finite dimensional quasi-Hopf algebra over the complex numbers with radical of codimension 2 is twist equivalent to a Nichols Hopf algebra, or to a lifting of one of four special quasi-Hopf algebras of dimensions 2, 8, 8, and 32. The purpose of this paper is to construct new finite dimensional basic quasi-Hopf algebras A(q) of dimension n^3, n>2, parametrized by primitive roots of unity q of order n^2, with radical of codimension n, which generalize the construction of the basic quasi-Hopf algebras of dimension 8 given in math.QA/0310253. These quasi-Hopf …
In this paper we investigate pointed Hopf algebras via quiver methods. We classify all possible Hopf structures arising from minimal Hopf quivers, namely basic cycles and the linear chain. This provides full local structure information for general pointed Hopf algebras.
Motivated by the so-called H-cell reduction theorems, we investigate certain classes of bicategories which have only one H-cell apart from possibly the identity. We show that H_0-simple quasi fiab bicategories with unique H-cell H_0 are fusion categories. We further study two classes of non-semisimple quasi-fiab bicategories with a single H-cell apart from the identity. The first is $\cH_A$, indexed by a finite-dimensional radically graded basic Hopf algebra A, and the second is $\cG_A$, consisting of symmetric projective A-A-bimodules. We show that $\cH_A$ can be viewed as a 1-full subbicateg…
We introduce and investigate the basic properties of an involutory (dual) quasi-Hopf algebra. We also study the representations of an involutory quasi-Hopf algebra and prove that an involutory dual quasi-Hopf algebra with non-zero integral is cosemisimple.
We develop some basic homological theory of hopfological algebra as defined by Khovanov. Several homological properties in hopfological algebra analogous to those of usual homological theory of DG algebras are obtained.
The objects of study in this paper are Hopf algebras $H$ which are finitely generated algebras over an algebraically closed field and are extensions of a commutative Hopf algebra by a finite dimensional Hopf algebra. Basic structural and homological properties are recalled and classes of examples are listed. Bounds are obtained on the dimensions of simple $H$-modules, and the structure of $H$ is shown to be severely constrained when the finite dimensional extension is semisimple and cosemisimple.
We introduce quasi-Hopf $*$-algebras i.e. quasi-Hopf algebras equipped with a conjugation (star) operation. The definition of quasi-Hopf $*$-algebras proposed ensures that the class of quasi-Hopf $*$-algebras is closed under twisting and additionally, that any Hopf $*$-algebra becomes a quasi-Hopf $*$-algebra via twisting. The basic properties of these algebras are developed. The relationship between the antipode and star structure is investigated. Quasi-triangular quasi-Hopf $*$-algebras are introduced and studied.
We study the basic monoidal properties of the category of Hopf modules for a coquasi Hopf algebra. In particular we discuss the so called fundamental theorem that establishes a monoidal equivalence between the category of comodules and the category of Hopf modules. We present a categorical proof of Radford's $S^4$ formula for the case of a finite dimensional coquasi Hopf algebra, by establishing a monoidal isomorphism between certain double dual functors.
We say that a Hopf algebra H is semicocommutative if the right adjoint coaction factorizes through the tensor product of H with the center of H. For instance the commutative and the cocommutative Hopf algebras are semicocommutative. The quasitriangular Hopf algebras generalize the cocommutative Hopf algebras. In this paper we introduce and begin the study of a similar generalization for the semicocommutative ones. These algebras, which we call semiquasitriangular Hopf algebras have many of the basic properties of the quasitriangular ones. In particular, they have associated braided categories …
We introduce new polynomial invariants of a finite-dimensional semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra A over a field by using the braiding structures of A. We investigate basic properties of the polynomial invariants including stability under extension of the base field. Furthermore, we show that our polynomial invariants are indeed tensor invariants of the representation category of A, and recognize the difference of the representation category and the representation ring of A. Actually, by computing and comparing polynomial invariants, we find new examples of pairs of Hopf algebras whose r…
In this paper, we present a general method for constructing finite-dimensional quasi-Hopf algebras from finite abelian groups and braided vector spaces of Cartan type. The study of such quasi-Hopf algebras leads to the classification of finite-dimensional radically graded basic quasi-Hopf algebras over abelian groups with dimensions not divisible by $2,3,5,7$ and associators given by abelian $3$-cocycles. As special cases , the small quasi-quantum groups are introduced and studied. Many new explicit examples of finite-dimensional genuine quasi-Hopf algebras are obtained.
The differential geometry on a Hopf algebra is constructed, by using the basic axioms of Hopf algebras and noncommutative differential geometry. The space of generalized derivations on a Hopf algebra of functions is presented via the smash product, and used to define and discuss quantum Lie algebras and their properties. The Cartan calculus of the exterior derivative, Lie derivative, and inner derivation is found for both the universal and general differential calculi of an arbitrary Hopf algebra, and, by restricting to the quasitriangular case and using the numerical R-matrix formalism, the a…
The basics of quasitriangular Hopf algebras and quantum Lie algebras are briefly reviewed, and it is shown that their properties allow the introduction of a Killing form. For quantum Lie algebras, this leads to the definitions of a Killing metric and quadratic casimir. The specific case of $\uea{su}{N}$ is examined in detail, where it is shown that many of the classical results are reproduced, and explicit calculations to illustrate the conclusions are presented for $\uea{su}{2}$.
We systematically study noncommutative and nonassociative algebras A and their bimodules as algebras and bimodules internal to the representation category of a quasitriangular quasi-Hopf algebra. We enlarge the morphisms of the monoidal category of A-bimodules by internal homomorphisms, and describe explicitly their evaluation and composition morphisms. For braided commutative algebras A the full subcategory of symmetric A-bimodule objects is a braided closed monoidal category, from which we obtain an internal tensor product operation on internal homomorphisms. We describe how these structures…
We extend the notion of Poisson-Lie groups and Lie bialgebras from Poisson to g-quasi-Poisson geometry and provide a quantization to braided Hopf algebras in the corresponding Drinfeld category. The basic examples of these g-quasi-Poisson Lie groups are nilpotent radicals of parabolic subgroups. We also provide examples of moment maps in this new context coming from moduli spaces of flat connections on surfaces.
We survey variety theory for modules of finite dimensional Hopf algebras, recalling some definitions and basic properties of support and rank varieties where they are known. We focus specifically on properties known for classes of examples such as finite group algebras and finite group schemes. We list open questions about tensor products of modules and projectivity, where varieties may play a role in finding answers.
This is an introduction for algebraists to the theory of algebras and Hopf algebras in braided categories. Such objects generalise super-algebras and super-Hopf algebras, aswell as colour-Lie algebras. Basic facts about braided categories C are recalled, the modules and comodules of Hopf algebras in such categories are studied, the notion of `braided -commutative' or `braided-cocommutative' Hopf algebras (braided groups) is reviewed and a fully diagrammatic proof of the reconstruction theorem for a braided group aut(C) is given. The theory has important implications for the theory of quasitrian…
In this paper, we introduce the concept of a Rota-Baxter paired module to study Rota-Baxter modules without necessarily a Rota-Baxter operator. We obtain two characterizations of Rota-Baxter paired modules, and give some basic properties of Rota-Baxter paired modules. Beginning with the connection between the notion of integrals in the representations of Hopf algebra and of the notion of an integral algebra as a motivation and special case of Rota-Baxter algebra of weight zero, we obtain a large number of Rota-Baxter paired modules from Hopf related algebras and modules, including semisimple H…
In a previous paper the authors constructed a class of quasi-Hopf algebras $D^ω(G, A)$ associated to a finite group $G$, generalizing the twisted quantum double construction. We gave necessary and sufficient conditions, cohomological in nature, that the corresponding module category $Rep(D^ω(G, A))$ is a modular tensor category.\ In the present paper we verify the cohomological conditions for the class of groups $G$ which \emph{contain a unique involution}, and in this way we obtain an explicit construction of a new class of modular quasi-Hopf algebras.\ We develop the basic theory for general…
We define a noncommutative algebra of four basic objects within a differential calculus on quantum groups: functions, 1-forms, Lie derivatives and inner derivations, as the cross-product algebra associated with Woronowicz's (differential) algebra of functions and forms. This definition properly takes into account the Hopf algebra structure of the Woronowicz calculus. It also provides a direct proof of the Cartan identity.
We propose a nonstandard approach to solving the apparent incompatibility between the coalgebra structure of some inhomogeneous quantum groups and their natural complex conjugation. In this work we sketch the general idea and develop the method in detail on a toy-model; the latter is a q-deformation of the Hopf algebra of 1-dim translations + dilatations. We show how to get all Hilbert space representations of the latter from tensor products of the fundamental ones; physically, this corresponds to constructing composite systems of many free distinct q-particles in terms of the basic one-partic…
The universal R-matrices and, dually, the coquasitriangular structures of the group Hopf algebra of a finite Abelian group (resp. of an arbitrary Abelian group) are determined. This is used to formulate graded multilinear algebra in terms of triangular or cotriangular Hopf algebras. For the convenience of the reader, in a separate section the definitions and basic properties of quasitriangular and coquasitriangular Hopf algebras are recalled.
We introduce the notions of Hopf quasigroup and Hopf coquasigroup $H$ generalising the classical notion of an inverse property quasigroup $G$ expressed respectively as a quasigroup algebra $k G$ and an algebraic quasigroup $k[G]$. We prove basic results as for Hopf algebras, such as anti(co)multiplicativity of the antipode $S:H\to H$, that $S^2=\id$ if $H$ is commutative or cocommutative, and a theory of crossed (co)products. We also introduce the notion of a Moufang Hopf (co)quasigroup and show that the coordinate algebras $k[S^{2^n-1}]$ of the parallelizable spheres are algebraic quasigroups…
Intrinsic Hopf algebra structure of the Woronowicz differential complex is shown to generate quite naturally a bicovariant algebra of four basic objects within a differential calculus on quantum groups -- coordinate functions, differential 1-forms, Lie derivatives, and inner derivations -- as the cross-product algebra of two mutually dual graded Hopf algebras. This construction, properly taking into account Hopf-algebraic properties of Woronowicz's bicovariant calculus, provides a direct proof of the Cartan identity and of many other useful relations. A detailed comparison with other approache…
We apply the theory of finite dimensional weak C^*-Hopf algebras A as developed by G. Böhm, F. Nill and K. Szlachányi to study reducible inclusion triples of von-Neumann algebras N \subset M \subset (M\cros\A). Here M is an A-module algebra, N is the fixed point algebra and \M\cros\A is the crossed product extension. ``Weak'' means that the coproduct Δon A is non-unital, requiring various modifications of the standard definitions for (co-)actions and crossed products. We show that acting with normalized positive and nondegenerate left integrals l\in\A gives rise to faithful conditional expecta…
We introduce and begin to analyse a class of algebras, associated to congruence subgroups, that extend both the algebra of modular forms of all levels and the ring of classical Hecke operators. At the intuitive level, these are algebras of `polynomial coordinates' for the `transverse space' of lattices modulo the action of the Hecke correspondences. Their underlying symmetry is shown to be encoded by the same Hopf algebra that controls the transverse geometry of codimension 1 foliations. Its action is shown to span the `holomorphic tangent space' of the noncommutative space, and each of its th…
We construct firstly the complete list of five quantum deformations of $D=4$ complex homogeneous orthogonal Lie algebra $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})\cong \mathfrak{o}(3;\mathbb{C})\oplus \mathfrak{o}(3;\mathbb{C})$, describing quantum rotational symmetry of four-dimensional complex space-time, in particular we provide the corresponding universal quantum $R$-matrices. Further applying four possible reality conditions we obtain all sixteen Hopf-algebraic quantum deformations for the real forms of $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})$: Euclidean $\mathfrak{o}(4)$, Lorentz $\mathfrak{o}(3,1)$, Kleinian $\ma…
"Co-Frobenius" coalgebras were introduced as dualizations of Frobenius algebras. Recently, it was shown in \cite{I} that they admit left-right symmetric characterizations analogue to those of Frobenius algebras: a coalgebra $C$ is co-Frobenius if and only if it is isomorphic to its rational dual. We consider the more general quasi-co-Frobenius (QcF) coalgebras; in the first main result we show that these also admit symmetric characterizations: a coalgebra is QcF if it is weakly isomorphic to its (left, or equivalently right) rational dual $Rat(C^*)$, in the sense that certain coproduct or prod…
We show that the cohomology ring of a finite-dimensional complex pointed Hopf algebra with an abelian group of group-like elements is finitely generated. Our strategy has three major steps. We first reduce the problem to the finite generation of cohomology of finite dimensional Nichols algebras of diagonal type. For the Nichols algebras we do a detailed analysis of cohomology via the Anick resolution reducing the problem further to specific combinatorial properties. Finally, to check these properties we turn to the classification of Nichols algebras of diagonal type due to Heckenberger. In thi…
In this paper, we generalize Majid's bicrossproduct construction. We start with a pair (A,B) of two regular multiplier Hopf algebras. We assume that B is a right A-module algebra and that A is a left B-comodule coalgebra. We recall and discuss the two notions in the first sections of the paper. The right action of A on B gives rise to the smash product A # B. The left coaction of B on A gives a possible coproduct on A # B. We will discuss in detail the necessary compatibility conditions between the action and the coaction for this to be a proper coproduct on A # B. The result is again a regula…
We describe the structure of the Grothendieck ring of projective modules of basic Hopf algebras using a positive integer determined by the composition series of the principal indecomposable projective module.
In this article -that has also the intention to survey some known results in the theory of compact quantum groups using methods different from the standard and with a strong algebraic flavor- we consider compact o-coalgebras and Hopf algebras. In the case of a o-Hopf algebra we present a proof of the characterization of the compactness in terms of the existence of a positive definite integral, and use our methods to give an elementary proof of the uniqueness - up to conjugation by an automorphism of Hopf algebras- of the compact involution appearing in [4]. We study the basic properties of the…
The purpose of this paper is to develop a theory of bimonads and Hopf monads on arbitrary categories thus providing the possibility to transfer the essentials of the theory of Hopf algebras in vector spaces to more general settings. There are several extensions of this theory to {\em monoidal} categories which in a certain sense follow the classical trace. Here we do not pose any conditions on our base category but we do refer to the monoidal structure of the category of endofunctors on any category $\A$ and by this we retain some of the combinatorial complexity which makes the theory so inter…
The existence of dual structures in a Yangian Y(g) signify that the latter belongs to multidimensional naturally parametrized variety of Hopf algebras. These varieties have boundaries containing Yangians Y(a) inequivalent to the original Y(g). The new basic algebra $a$ is an algebra of the cotangent bundle attributed to the dual structure. We show how to construct such boundary Yangians and study some of their properties. We prove that the Hopf algebra Y(a) is a quantization of a parametric solution of the classical Yang-Baxter equation. The limiting procedure and the properties of the boundar…
A braided generalization of the concept of Hopf algebra (quantum group) is presented. The generalization overcomes an inherent geometrical inhomogeneity of quantum groups, in the sense of allowing completely pointless objects. All braid-type equations appear as a consequence of initial axioms. Braided counterparts of basic algebraic relations between fundamental entities of the standard theory are found.
We describe basic concepts of noncommutative geometry and a general construction extending the familiar duality between ordinary spaces and commutative algebras to a duality between Quotient spaces and Noncommutative algebras. Basic tools of the theory, K-theory, Cyclic cohomology, Morita equivalence, Operator theoretic index theorems, Hopf algebra symmetry are reviewed. They cover the global aspects of noncommutative spaces, such as the transformation $θ\to 1/θ$ for the NC torus $\Tb_θ^2$, unseen in perturbative expansions in $θ$ such as star or Moyal products. We discuss the foundational pro…
A finite set can be supplied with a group structure which can then be used to select (classes of) differential calculi on it via the notions of left-, right- and bicovariance. A corresponding framework has been developed by Woronowicz, more generally for Hopf algebras including quantum groups. A differential calculus is regarded as the most basic structure needed for the introduction of further geometric notions like linear connections and, moreover, for the formulation of field theories and dynamics on finite sets. Associated with each bicovariant first order differential calculus on a finite…
