Wiener's criterion for the regularity of a boundary point with respect to the Dirichlet problem for the Laplace equation has been extended to various classes of elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. They include linear divergence and nondivergence equations with discontinuous coefficients, equations with degenerate quadratic form, quasilinear and fully nonlinear equations, as well as equations on Riemannian manifolds, graphs, groups, and metric spaces. A common feature of these equations is that all of them are of second order, and Wiener type characterizations for higher order equations have been unknown so far. Indeed, the increase of the order results in the loss of the maximum principle, Harnack's inequality, barrier techniques, and level truncation arguments, which are ingredients in different proofs related to the Wiener test for the second order equations.
In the present work we extend Wiener's result to elliptic differential operators $L(\partial)$ of order $2m$ in the Euclidean space ${\bf R}^n$ with constant real coefficients
$$L(\partial)=(-1)^m\sum_{|α|=|β|=m}a_{αβ} \partial^{α+ β}.$$
The results can be extended to equations with variable (for example, Hölder continuous) coefficients in divergence form but we leave aside this generalization to make exposition more lucid.
We study the boundary continuity of solutions to fully nonlinear elliptic equations. We first define a capacity for operators in non-divergence form and derive several capacitary estimates. Secondly, we formulate the Wiener criterion, which characterizes a regular boundary point via potential theory. Our approach utilizes the asymptotic behavior of homogeneous solutions, together with Harnack inequality and the comparison principle.
In this note we prove a Wiener criterion of regularity of boundary points for the Dirichlet problem related to $X$-elliptic operators in divergence form enjoying the doubling condition and the Poincaré inequality. As a step towards this result, we exhibit some other characterizations of regularity in terms of the capacitary potentials. Finally, we also show that a cone-type criterion holds true in our setting.
We obtain sufficient conditions expressed in terms of Wiener type tests involving Hausdorff or Bessel capacities for the existence of large solutions to equations (1) $-\Gd_pu+e^{λu}+β=0$ or (2) $-\Gd_pu+λ|u|^{q-1}u+β=0$ in a bounded domain $\Gw$ when $q>p-1>0, λ>0$ and $β\in\mathbb{R}$. We apply our results to equations (3) $-\Gd_pu+a\abs{\nabla u}^{q}+bu^{s}=0$, (4) $\Gd_p u+u^{-γ}=0$ with $10, b\geq 0$ and $(q-p+1)+b(s-p+1)>0$, $γ>0$.
This paper introduces the notion of $log$-regularity (or $log$-irregularity) of the boundary point $ζ$ (possibly $ζ=\infty$) of the arbitrary open subset $Ω$ of the Greenian deleted neigborhood of $ζ$ in $R^2$ concerning second order uniformly elliptic equations with bounded and measurable coefficients, according as whether the $log$-harmonic measure of $ζ$ is null (or positive). A necessary and sufficient condition for the removability of the logarithmic singularity, that is to say for the existence of a unique solution to the Dirichlet problem in $Ω$ in a class $O(\log |\cdot - ζ|)$ is estab…
This paper introduces a notion of regularity (or irregularity) of the point at infinity for the unbounded open subset of $\rr^{N}$ concerning second order uniformly elliptic equations with bounded and measurable coefficients, according as whether the A-harmonic measure of the point at infinity is zero (or positive). A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unique bounded solution to the Dirichlet problem in an arbitrary open set of $\rr^{N}, N\ge 3$ is established in terms of the Wiener test for the regularity of the point at infinity. It coincides with the Wiener test for t…
We consider the Dirichlet problem for quasilinear elliptic equations with Musielak-Orlicz (p,q)-growth and non-logarithmic conditions on the coefficients. A sufficient Wiener-type condition for the regularity of a boundary point is established.
In this paper we are concerned with hypoelliptic diffusion operators $\mathcal{H}$. Our main aim is to show, with an axiomatic approach, that a Wiener-type test of $\mathcal{H}$-regularity of boundary points can be derived starting from the following basic assumptions: Gaussian bounds of the fundamental solution of $\mathcal{H}$ with respect to a distance satisfying doubling condition and segment property. As a main step towards this result, we establish some estimates at the boundary of the continuity modulus for the generalized Perron-Wiener solution to the relevant Dirichlet problem. The es…
The behavior of solutions to the biharmonic equation is well-understood in smooth domains. In the past two decades substantial progress has also been made for the polyhedral domains and domains with Lipschitz boundaries. However, very little is known about higher order elliptic equations in the general setting. In this paper we introduce new integral identities that allow to investigate the solutions to the biharmonic equation in an arbitrary domain. We establish: (1) boundedness of the gradient of a solution in any three-dimensional domain; (2) pointwise estimates on the derivatives of the bi…
In the present paper we establish the Wiener test for boundary regularity of the solutions to the polyharmonic operator. We introduce a new notion of polyharmonic capacity and demonstrate necessary and sufficient conditions on the capacity of the domain responsible for the regularity of a polyharmonic function near a boundary point. In the case of the Laplacian the test for regularity of a boundary point is the celebrated Wiener criterion of 1924. It was extended to the biharmonic case in dimension three by [Mayboroda, Maz'ya, Invent. Math. 2009]. As a preliminary stage of this work, in [Maybo…
In this paper we prove a Wiener-type characterization of boundary regularity, in the spirit of a classical result by Landis, for a class of evolutive Hörmander operators. We actually show the validity of our criterion for a larger class of degenerate-parabolic operators with a fundamental solution satisfying suitable two-sided Gaussian bounds. Our condition is expressed in terms of a series of balayages or, (as it turns out to be) equivalently, Riesz-potentials.
Let $X$ be a separable Banach space endowed with a non-degenerate centered Gaussian measure $μ$. The associated Cameron-Martin space is denoted by $H$. Consider two sufficiently regular convex functions $U:X\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ and $G:X\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$. We let $ν=e^{-U}μ$ and $Ω=G^{-1}(-\infty,0]$. In this paper we are interested in the domain of the the self-adjoint operator associated with the quadratic form \begin{gather} (ψ,φ)\mapsto \int_Ω\langle\nabla_Hψ,\nabla_Hφ\rangle_Hdν\qquadψ,φ\in W^{1,2}(Ω,ν).\qquad\qquad (\star) \end{gather} In particular we obtain a complete characteriz…
We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a boundary point to be regular for the Dirichlet problem related to a class of Kolmogorov-type equations. Our criterion is inspired by two classical criteria for the heat equation: the Evans-Gariepy's Wiener test, and a criterion by Landis expressed in terms of a series of caloric potentials.
We consider the Dirichlet problem on general, possibly nonsmooth bounded domain, for elliptic linear equation with uniformly elliptic divergence form operator. We investigate carefully the relationship between weak, soft and the Perron-Wiener-Brelot solutions of the problem. To this end, we extend the usual notion of the trace operator to Sobolev space $H^1(D)$ with $D$ being an arbitrary bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$. In the second part of the paper, we prove some existence results for the Dirichlet problem for semilinear equations with measure data on the right-hand side and $L^1$-da…
We study the existence of a maximal solution of $-\Gd u+g(u)=f(x)$ in a domain $\Gw\subset \BBR^N$ with compact boundary, assuming that $f\in (L^1_{loc}(\Gw))_+$ and that $g$ is nondecreasing, $g(0)\geq 0$ and $g$ satisfies the Keller-Osserman condition. We show that if the boundary satisfies the classical $C_{1,2}$ Wiener criterion then the maximal solution is a large solution, i.e., it blows up everywhere on the boundary. In addition we discuss the question of uniqueness of large solutions.
Recent years have brought significant advances in the theory of higher order elliptic equations in non-smooth domains. Sharp pointwise estimates on derivatives of polyharmonic functions in arbitrary domains were established, followed by the higher order Wiener test. Certain boundary value problems for higher order operators with variable non-smooth coefficients were addressed, both in divergence form and in composition form, the latter being adapted to the context of Lipschitz domains. These developments brought new estimates on the fundamental solutions and the Green function, allowing for th…
We obtain a necessary and a sufficient condition expressed in terms of Wiener type tests involving the parabolic $W\_{q'}^{2,1}$- capacity, where $q'=\frac{q}{q-1}$, for the existence of large solutions to equation $\prt\_tu-Δu+u^q=0$ in non-cylindrical domain, where $q\textgreater{}1$. Also, we provide a sufficient condition associated with equation $\prt\_tu-Δu+e^u-1=0$ . Besides, we apply our results to equation: $\prt\_tu-Δu+a|\nabla u|^p+bu^{q}=0$ for $a,b\textgreater{}0$, $11$.
Let $(X,\mathcal W)$ be a balayage space, $1\in \mathcal W$, or - equivalently - let $\mathcal W$ be the set of excessive functions of a Hunt process on a locally compact space $X$ with countable base such that $\mathcal W$ separates points, every function in $\mathcal W$ is the supremum of its continuous minorants and there exist strictly positive continuous $u,v\in \mathcal W$ such that $u/v\to 0$ at infinity. We suppose that there is a Green function $G>0$ for $X$, a metric $ρ$ on $X$ and a decreasing function $g\colon[0,\infty)\to (0,\infty]$ having the doubling property such that $G\appro…
This paper investigates the relation between the boundary geometric properties and the boundary regularity of the solutions of elliptic equations. We prove by a new unified method the pointwise boundary Hölder regularity under proper geometric conditions. "Unified" means that our method is applicable for the Laplace equation, linear elliptic equations in divergence and non-divergence form, fully nonlinear elliptic equations, the $p-$Laplace equations and the fractional Laplace equations etc. In addition, these geometric conditions are quite general. In particular, for local equations, the meas…
The paper deals with the three-dimensional Dirichlet boundary value problem (BVP) for a second order strongly elliptic self-adjoint system of partial differential equations in the divergence form with variable coefficients and develops the integral potential method based on a localized parametrix. Using Green's representation formula and properties of the localized layer and volume potentials, we reduce the Dirichlet BVP to a system of localized boundary-domain integral equations (LBDIEs). The equivalence between the Dirichlet BVP and the corresponding LBDIE system is studied. We establish tha…
We study stochastic parabolic and elliptic PDEs driven by purely spatial white noise. Even the simplest equations driven by this noise often do not have a square-integrable solution and must be solved in special weighted spaces. We demonstrate that the Cameron-Martin version of the Wiener chaos decomposition is an effective tool to study both stationary and evolution equations driven by space-only noise. The paper presents results about solvability of such equations in weighted Wiener chaos spaces and studies the long-time behavior of the solutions of evolution equations with space-only noise.
An existence and uniqueness result to evolution equations with sign-changing pseudo-differential operators and its applications to logarithmic Laplacian operators and second-order differential operators without ellipticity
We study the Cauchy problem for a semilinear stochastic partial differential equation driven by a finite-dimensional Wiener process. In particular, under the hypothesis that all the coefficients are sufficiently smooth and have bounded derivatives, we consider the equation in the context of power scale generated by a strongly elliptic differential operator. Application of semigroup arguments then yields the existence of a continuous strong solution.
By proving a topological Paley-Wiener Theorem for Riemannian symmetric spaces of non-compact type, we show that a non-zero invariant differential operator is a homeomorphism from the space of test functions onto its image and hence surjective when extended to the space of distributions.
Let $u$ be a positive harmonic function in the unit ball $B_1 \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ and let $μ$ be the boundary measure of $u$. Consider a point $x\in \partial B_1$ and let $n(x)$ denote the unit normal vector at $x$. Let $α$ be a number in $(-1,n-1]$ and $A \in [0,+\infty) $. We prove that $u(x+n(x)t)t^α \to A$ as $t \to +0$ if and only if $\frac{μ({B_r(x)})}{r^{n-1}} r^α \to C_αA$ as $r\to+0$, where ${C_α= \frac{π^{n/2}}{Γ(\frac{n-α+1}{2})Γ(\frac{α+1}{2})}}$. For $α=0$ it follows from the theorems by Rudin and Loomis which claim that a positive harmonic function has a limit along the normal …
