First the title could be also understood as ``3-manifolds related by non-zero degree maps" or "Degrees of maps between 3-manifolds" for some aspects in this survey talk. The topology of surfaces was completely understood at the end of 19th century, but maps between surfaces kept to be an active topic in the 20th century and many important results just appeared in the last 25 years. The topology of 3-manifolds was well-understood only in the later 20th century, and the topic of non-zero degree maps between 3-manifolds becomes active only rather recently. We will survey questions and results in the topic indicated by the title, present its relations to 3-manifold topology and its applications to problems in geometry group theory, fixed point theory and dynamics. There are four aspects addressed: (1) Results concerning the existence and finiteness about the maps of non-zero degree (in particular of degree one) between 3-manifolds and their suitable correspondence about epimorphisms on knot groups and 3-manifold groups. (2) A measurement of the topological complexity on 3-manifolds and knots given by "degree one map partial order", and the interactions between the studies of non-zero degree map among 3-manifolds and of topology of 3-manifolds. (3) The standard forms of non-zero degree maps and automorphisms on 3-manifolds and applications to minimizing the fixed points in the isotopy class. (4) The uniqueness of the covering degrees between 3-manifolds and the uniqueness embedding indices (in particular the co-Hopfian property) between Kleinian groups. The methods used are varied, and we try to describe them briefly.
In this paper, it is shown that every orientable closed 3-manifold maps with nonzero degree onto at most finitely many homeomorphically distinct irreducible non-geometric orientable closed 3-manifolds. Moreover, given any nonzero integer, as a mapping degree up to sign, every orientable closed 3-manifold maps with that degree onto only finitely many homeomorphically distinct orientable closed 3-manifolds.
We determine those smooth $n$--dimensional closed manifolds with $n \geq 4$ which admit round fold maps into ${\mathbb{R}}^{n-1}$, i.e.\ fold maps whose critical value sets consist of disjoint spheres of dimension $n-2$ isotopic to concentric spheres. We also classify such round fold maps up to $C^{\infty}$ $\mathcal{A}$--equivalence.
We show that for a C^infty stable map of an oriented 4-manifold into a 3-manifold, the algebraic number of singular fibers of a specific type coincides with the signature of the source 4-manifold.
We show examples of pairs of smooth, compact, homeomorphic 4-manifolds, whose diffeomorphism types are distinguished by the topology of the singular sets of smooth stable maps defined on them. In this distinction we rely on results from Seiberg-Witten theory.
We prove a rigidity theorem for degree one maps between small 3-manifolds using Heegaard genus, and provide some applications and connections to Heegaard genus and Dehn surgery problems.
In this paper, we first classify singular fibers of proper $C^\infty$ stable maps of 3-dimensional manifolds with boundary into surfaces. Then, we compute the cohomology groups of the associated universal complex of singular fibers, and obtain certain cobordism invariants for Morse functions on compact surfaces with boundary.
This paper adresses the following problem: Given a closed orientable three-manifold M, are there at most finitely many closed orientable three-manifolds 1-dominated by M? We solve this question for the class of closed orientable graph manifolds. More presisely the main result of this paper asserts that any closed orientable graph manifold 1-dominates at most finitely many orientable closed three-manifolds satisfying the Poincare-Thurston Geometrization Conjecture. To prove this result we state a more general theorem for Haken manifolds which says that any closed orientable three-manifold M 1-d…
Suppose that the 3-manifold M is given by integral surgery along a link L in S^3. In the following we construct a stable map from M to the plane, whose singular set is canonically oriented. We obtain upper bounds for the minimal numbers of crossings and non-simple singularities and of connected components of fibers of stable maps from M to the plane in terms of properties of L.
The Nielsen Conjecture for Homeomorphisms asserts that any homeomorphism $f$ of a closed manifold is isotopic to a map realizing the Nielsen number of $f$, which is a lower bound for the number of fixed points among all maps homotopic to $f$. The main theorem of this paper proves this conjecture for all orientation preserving maps on geometric or Haken 3-manifolds. It will also be shown that on many manifolds all maps are isotopic to fixed point free maps. The proof is based on the understanding of homeomorphisms on 2-orbifolds and 3-manifolds. Thurston's classification of surface homeomorphis…
We give a description of degree-one maps between closed, oriented 3-manifolds in terms of surgery. Namely, we show that there is a degree-one map from a closed, oriented 3-manifold $M$ to a closed, oriented 3-manifold $N$ if and only if $M$ can be obtained from $N$ by surgery about a link in $N$ each of whose components is an unknot. We use this to interpret the existence of degree-one maps between closed 3-manifolds in terms of smooth 4-manifolds. More precisely, we show that there is a degree-one map from $M$ to $N$ if and only if there is a smooth embedding of $M$ in $W=(N\times I)#_n \bar{…
Special-generic-like maps or SGL maps are introduced by the author motivated by observing and investigating algebraic topological or differential topological properties of manifolds via nice smooth maps whose codimensions are negative. The present paper says that manifolds admitting certain very explicit SGL maps are topologically restricted strongly and this also constructs these maps with the manifolds explicitly. Morse functions with exactly two singular points on spheres or functions in Reeb's theorem and canonical projections of naturally embedded spheres in Euclidean spaces are generali5…
Fold maps are higher dimensional versions of Morse functions, which play important roles in the studies of smooth manifolds, and such general maps also have been fundamental tools in the studies of smooth manifolds by using generic maps. In this paper, we study {\it simple} fold maps, which are fold maps such that any connected component of the inverse image of each singular value includes at most one singular point. More precisely, we consider simple fold maps having simple structures locally or globally and show that the source manifolds are bounded by (PL) manifolds obtained by considering …
We give examples of harmonic maps between negatively curved manifolds with special properties. These negatively curved manifolds do not have the homotopy type of a locally symmetric space.
Graph manifolds form important classes of $3$-dimensional closed and orientable manifolds. For example, {\it Seifert} manifolds are graph manifolds where hyperbolic manifolds are not. In applying singularity theory of differentiable maps to understanding global topologies of manifolds, graph manifolds have been shown to be characterized as ones admitting so-called simple fold maps into the plane of explicit classes by Saeki and the author. The present paper presents several related new results. Fold maps are higher dimensional variants of Morse functions and simple ones form simple classes, ge…
In this paper we study the set of projective maps between compact proper convex real projective manifolds. We show that this set contains only finitely many distinct homotopy classes and each homotopy class has the structure of a real projective manifold. When the target manifold is strictly convex, our results imply that each non-trivial homotopy class contains at most one projective map. These results are motivated by the theory of holomorphic maps between compact complex manifolds.
We compute the oriented cobordism group of fold maps of 4-manifolds into the space with all the possible restrictions (and also with no restriction) to the singular fibers. We also give geometric invariants which describe completely the cobordism group of fold maps.
Stable fold maps are fundamental tools in a generalization of the theory of Morse functions on smooth manifolds and its application to studies of topological properties of smooth manifolds. Round fold maps were introduced as stable fold maps with singular value sets, defined as the set consisting of all the singular values, of concentric spheres by the author in 2013; for example, some special generic maps on spheres are regarded as round fold maps whose singular value sets are connected. Algebraic invariants such as homology and homotopy groups of manifolds admitting round fold maps and more …
We give complete geometric invariants of cobordisms of fold maps with oriented singular set and cobordisms of even codimensional fold maps. These invariants are given in terms of cobordisms of stably framed manifolds and cobordisms of immersions with prescribed normal bundles defined by the author in his earlier works.
We investigate to what extend the density of $Z_n$-maps in the characterization of $Q$-manifolds, and the density of maps $f\in C(\mathbb N\times Q,X)$ having discrete images in the $l_2$-manifolds characterization can be weakened to the density of homological $Z_n$-maps and homological $Z$-maps, respectively. As a result, we obtain homological characterizations of $Q$-manifolds and $l_2$-manifolds.
We present new explicit decompositions of manifolds via so-called fold maps into lower dimensional spaces. Fold maps form a nice class of so-called generic maps, generalizing Morse functions naturally. To understand the topologies and the differentibale structures of manifolds globally, decomposing manifolds are important and this presents interesting topics and problems on geometry of manifolds. The notion of a Heegaard splitting of a $3$-dimensional closed and connected manifold presents a pioneering study. A $3$-dimensional closed and connected manifold is always decomposed into two copies …
We show that manifolds admitting special generic maps also admit nice generalized multisections. Special generic maps are natural generalized versions of Morse functions with exactly two singular points on closed manifolds, characterizing spheres whose dimensions are not $4$ topologically and the $4$-dimensional unit sphere, and canonical projections of unit spheres. They are shown to restrict the differentiable structures of spheres etc. and topologies of more general manifolds strongly by Saeki, Sakuma etc., followed by Nishioka, Wrazidlo etc. and followed by the author. Some elementary or i…
Fold maps are smooth maps at each singular point of which it is represented as the product map of a Morse function and the identity map. Round fold maps are, in short, such maps the sets of all singular points of which are embedded concentrically. They are, as Morse functions, important in understanding the topologies and the differentiable structures in geometric ways. In the present paper, we study cohomology rings of $3$-dimensional manifolds admitting round fold maps into the plane and see that difference of the coefficient rings and topological types of round fold maps are closely related…
We consider sufficient conditions of local removability of coincidences of maps f,g:N->M, where M,N are manifolds with dimensions dimN>dimM. The coincidence index is the only obstruction to the removability for maps with fibers either acyclic or homeomorphic to spheres of certain dimensions. We also address the normalization property of the index and coincidence-producing maps.
{\it Fold maps} are fundamental tools in generalizing the theory of Morse functions and its application to studies of geometric properties of manifolds. One of the fundamental and important problems in the theory of fold maps is to construct explicit fold maps, which are often difficult. In this paper, we construct new examples of {\it round fold maps}, which are defined as {\it stable fold maps} with singular value sets of concentric spheres introduced by the author on manifolds having the structures of circle bundles. The class of round fold maps includes some {\it special generic} maps on h…
We study the space of "link maps": the space of maps of a disjoint union of compact, closed manifolds P_1, . . ., P_k into a manifold N whose images are pairwise disjoint. We apply the manifold calculus of functors developed by Goodwillie and Weiss to study the difference between it and its linear and quadratic approximations. We identify an appropriate generalization of the linking number as the geometric object which measures the difference between the space of link maps and its linear approximation. Our analysis of the difference between link maps and its quadratic approximation connects wi…
The Reeb space of a function or a map on a manifold is defined as the space of all connected components of preimages and represents the manifold compactly. In fact, Reeb spaces are fundamental and useful tools in geometric theory of so-called Morse functions and more general maps which are sufficiently tame. Can we construct an explicit good function inducing a given graph as the Reeb space (Reeb graph)? These problems were launched by Sharko in 2000s and have been explicitly solved by several researchers. As related pioneering studies, the author also found and solved problems adding constrai…
In this paper, as a fundamental study on the theory of Morse functions and their higher dimensional versions or fold maps and applications to geometric theory of manifolds, which were started in 1950s by differential topologists such as Thom and Whitney and have been studied actively, we study algebraic and differential topological properties of certain fold maps and their source manifolds. More precisely, we investigate fold maps obtained by surgery operations to fundamental fold maps and especially, homology groups of Reeb spaces, which are defined as the space of all connected components of…
We describe a new approach to the problem of constructing gluing parameterizations for open neighborhoods of boundary points of moduli spaces of anti-self-dual connections over closed four-dimensional manifolds. Our approach employs general results from differential topology for $C^1$ maps of smooth Banach manifolds with corners, providing a method that should apply to other problems in geometric analysis involving the gluing construction of solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations.
