We show that for a C^infty stable map of an oriented 4-manifold into a 3-manifold, the algebraic number of singular fibers of a specific type coincides with the signature of the source 4-manifold.
This paper concerns twisted signature invariants of knots and 3-manifolds. In the fibered case, we reduce the computation of these invariants to the study of the intersection form and monodromy on the twisted homology of the fiber surface. Along the way, we use rings of power series to obtain new interpretations of the twisted Milnor pairing introduced by Kirk and Livingston. This allows us to relate these pairings to twisted Blanchfield pairings. Finally, we study the resulting signature invariants, all of which are twisted generalisations of the Levine-Tristram signature.
Using theorems of Eliashberg and McDuff, Etnyre [Et] proved that the intersection form of a symplectic filling of a contact 3-manifold supported by planar open book is negative definite. In this paper, we prove a signature formula for allowable Lefschetz fibrations over $D^2$ with planar fiber by computing Maslov index appearing in Wall's non-additivity formula. The signature formula leads to an alternative proof of Etnyre's theorem via works of Niederkrüger and Wendl [NWe] and Wendl [We]. Conversely, Etnyre's theorem, together with the existence theorem of Stein structures on Lefschetz fibrat…
In his Ph.D. thesis, Burak Ozbagci described an algorithm computing signatures of Lefschetz fibrations where the input is a factorization of the monodromy into a product of Dehn twists. In this note, we give a reformulation of Ozbagci's algorithm which becomes much easier to implement. Our main tool is Wall's non-additivity formula applied to what we call partial fiber sum decomposition of a Lefschetz fibration over 2-disk. We show that our algorithm works for bordered Lefschetz fibrations over disk and it yields a formula for the signature of branched covers where the branched loci are regula…
In this paper, we present a construction of resolution of discrete singular fibers of a closed $5$-manifold that admits a locally free $S^1$-action, and prove its compatibility with the resolution of cyclic surface singularities in the quotient space by the $S^1$-action.
Takamura established a theory on splitting families of degenerations of complex curves. He introduced a powerful method for constructing a splitting family, called a barking family, in which there appear not only a singular fiber over the origin but also singular fibers over other points, called subordinate fibers. In this paper, for the case of degenerations of elliptic curves, we determine the types of these subordinate fibers.
In this paper, we first classify singular fibers of proper $C^\infty$ stable maps of 3-dimensional manifolds with boundary into surfaces. Then, we compute the cohomology groups of the associated universal complex of singular fibers, and obtain certain cobordism invariants for Morse functions on compact surfaces with boundary.
Given a null-cobordant oriented framed link $L$ in a closed oriented $3$--manifold $M$, we determine those links in $M \setminus L$ which can be realized as the singular point set of a generic map $M \to \mathbb{R}^2$ that has $L$ as an oriented framed regular fiber. Then, we study the linking behavior between the singular point set and regular fibers for generic maps of $M$ into $\mathbb{R}^2$.
We show that there exists an admissible nonorientable genus $g$ Lefschetz fibration with only one singular fiber over a closed orientable surface of genus $h$ if and only if $g \geq 4$ and $h \geq 1$.
We consider complex surfaces, viewed as smooth $4$-dimensional manifolds, that admit hyperelliptic Lefschetz fibrations over the $2$-sphere. In this paper, we show that the minimal number of singular fibers of such fibrations is equal to $2g+4$ for even $g\geq4$. For odd $g\geq7$, we show that the number is greater than or equal to $2g+6$. Moreover, we discuss the minimal number of singular fibers in all hyperelliptic Lefschetz fibrations over the $2$-sphere as well.
The E_8-manifold has several natural framed link descriptions, and we give an efficient method (via `grapes') for showing that they are indeed the same 4-manifold. This leads to explicit handle pictures for the perturbation of singular fibers in an elliptic surface to a collection of fishtails. In the same vein, we show how the degeneration of a regular fiber to a singular fiber in an elliptic surface provides rich examples of Gromov's compactness theorem.
In this paper, we give some relations in the mapping class groups of oriented closed surfaces in the form that a product of a small number of right hand Dehn twists is equal to a single commutator. Consequently, we find upper bounds for the minimal number of singular fibers in a Lefschetz fibration over the torus.
We show that the minimal number of singular fibers $N(g,1)$ in a genus-$g$ Lefschetz fibration over the torus is at least $3$. As an application, we show that $N(g, 1) \in \{ 3, 4\}$ for $g\ge 5$, $N(g, 1) \in \{3, 4,5 \}$ for $g= 3, 4$ and $N(2,1) = 7$.
We give a new and simple proof for the computation of the oriented and the unoriented fold cobordism groups of Morse functions on surfaces. We also compute similar cobordism groups of Morse functions based on simple stable maps of 3-manifolds into the plane. Furthermore, we show that certain cohomology classes associated with the universal complexes of singular fibers give complete invariants for all these cobordism groups. We also discuss invariants derived from hypercohomologies of the universal homology complexes of singular fibers. Finally, as an application of the theory of universal comp…
We give a Pontryagin-Thom-Szucs type construction for non-positive codimensional singular maps, and obtain results about cobordism and bordism groups of -1 codimensional stable maps with prescribed singular fibers.
We study a secondary invariant, called the Meyer function, on the fundamental group of the complement of the dual variety of a smooth projective variety. This invariant have played an important role when studying the local signatures of fibered 4-manifolds from topological point of view. As an application of our study, we define a local signature for generic non-hyperelliptic fibrations of genus 4 and 5 and compute some examples.
We prove that a Lefschetz fibration over the disc that, after compactification, has the same singular fibers as an extremal rational elliptic surface can be obtained by deleting a singular fiber and a section from the rational extremal elliptic surface, i.e. such a Lefschetz fibration is determined up to topological equivalence by its set of singular fibers. We get a complete clasification of Lefschetz fibrations with 2 $I_1$ fibers as a byproduct of our results. The proof is inspired by homological mirror symmetry and Karpov--Nogin's theorem on constructivity of helices on del Pezzo surfaces.…
There exists a (relatively minimal) genus g Lefschetz fibration with only one singular fiber over a closed (Riemann) surface of genus h iff g>2 and h>1. The singular fiber can be chosen to be reducible or irreducible. Other results are that every Dehn twist on a closed surface of genus at least three is a product of two commutators and no Dehn twist on any closed surface is equal to a single commutator.
The signature of a surface bundle over a surface is known to be divisible by 4. It is also known that the signature vanishes if the fiber genus is less than or equal to 2 or the base genus is less than or equal to 1. In this article, we construct new smooth 4-manifolds with signature 4 which are surface bundles over surfaces with small fiber and base genera. From these we derive improved upper bounds for the minimal genus of surfaces representing the second homology classes of a mapping class group.
Given some type of fibration on a 4-manifold $X$ with a torus regular fiber $T$, we may produce a new 4-manifold $X_T$ by performing torus surgery on $T$. There is a natural way to extend the fibration to $X_T$, but a multiple fiber (non-generic) singularity is introduced. We construct explicit generic fibrations (with only indefinite fold singularities) in a neighborhood of this multiple fiber. As an application this gives explicit constructions of broken Lefschetz fibrations on all elliptic surfaces (e.g. the family $E(n)_{p,q}$). As part of the construction we produce generic fibrations aro…
Kodaira's classification of singular fibers in elliptic fibrations and its translation into the language of monodromies and Lefschetz fibrations has been a boon to the study of 4-manifolds. In this article, we begin the work of translating between singular fibers of genus 2 families of algebraic curves and the positive Dehn twist factorizations of Lefschetz fibrations for a certain subset of the singularities described by Namikawa and Ueno in the 70s. We look at four families of hypersurface singularities in $\mathbb{C}^3$. Each hypersurface comes equipped with a fibration by genus 2 algebraic…
We introduce the $2$-nodal spherical deformation of certain singular fibers of genus $2$ fibrations, and use such deformations to construct various examples of simply connected minimal symplectic $4$-manifolds with small topology. More specifically, we construct new exotic minimal symplectic $4$-manifolds homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to ${\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#6({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$, ${\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#7({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$, and $3{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#k({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$ for $k=16, 17, 18, 19$ using combinations of such deformations, symplectic blowups, and (…
We use a knot invariant, namely the Tristram--Levine signature to study deformations of singular points of plane curves. We find a bound on the sum of M numbers over all singularities of a generic fiber in terms of the M number of the singularity at the central fiber and some topological data.
We construct examples of Lefschetz fibrations with prescribed singular fibers. By taking differences of pairs of such fibrations with the same singular fibers, we obtain new examples of surface bundles over surfaces with non-zero signature. From these we derive new upper bounds for the minimal genus of a surface representing a given element in the second homology of a mapping class group.
For any closed oriented surface F of genus at least three, we prove the existence of foliated F-bundles over surfaces such that the signatures of the total spaces are non-zero. We can arrange that the total holonomy of the horizontal foliations preserve a prescribed symplectic form on the fiber. We relate the cohomology class represented by the transverse symplectic form to a crossed homomorphism from the symplectomophism group of the fiber to its first real cohomology. This crossed homomorphism extends the flux homomorphism defined on the identity component of the symplectomorphism group.
The first aim of this paper is to give four types of examples of surface bundles over surfaces with non-zero signature. The first example is with base genus 2, a prescribed signature, a 0-section and the fiber genus greater than a certain number which depends on the signature. This provides a new upper bound on the minimal base genus for fixed signature and fiber genus. The second one gives a new asymptotic upper bound for this number in the case that fiber genus is odd. The third one has a small Euler characteristic. The last is a non-holomorphic example. The second aim is to improve upper bo…
We give a topological model for a polynomial map from $\C^n$ to $\C$ in the neighborhood of a fiber with isolated singularities. This is motivated out of the ``unfolding of links'' described earlier by the first author and Lee Rudolph. The topological model gives a useful encoding of the local and global monodromy for the map. The new ingredients --- the topology of the singularities at infinity of an irregular fiber, as encoded by the Milnor fibers at infinity and the monodromy maps on these Milnor fibers --- are recoverable for n=2 in full from the link at infinity of the irregular fiber. Th…
I. Hambleton, A. Korzeniewski and A. Ranicki proved that the signature of a fibre bundle of closed, connected, compatibly oriented PL manifolds is always multiplicative modulo 4. In this paper, we consider the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genera for odd integers $y$ for a smooth fiber bundle such that the base, fibre, and total space are compact complex algebraic manifolds (in the complex analytic topology, not in the Zariski topology). We show that the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genera of such a fibre bundle are always multiplicative modulo 4. We also investigate multiplicativity modulo 8 and show that if $y$ is c…
