We classify the connected components of the space of representations of the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface of genus $\geq 2$ in $Sp(4,{\mathbf R})$. We prove that this is equivalent to classifying the connected components of the moduli space of representations (which consists of conjugacy classes of reductive representations). We then continue the analysis initiated by Gothen in math/9904114, relying on: (1) the relation between our moduli space of representations and the moduli space of certain (polystable) analogues of Higgs bundles (which follows essentially from work of Hitchin, Simpson and Corlette) and (2) the existence of a proper function on the moduli space whose set of local minima can be identified with the moduli space $N$ of (polystable) quadratic bundles of rank 2; we finally deduce our result from the classification of the connected components of $N$.
In this paper we study embeddings of oriented connected closed surfaces in $\mathbb S^3$. We define a complete invariant, the fundamental span, for such embeddings, generalizing the notion of the peripheral system of a knot group. From the fundamental span, several computable invariants are derived and employed to study handlebody knots, bi-knotted surfaces, and chirality of knots. These invariants are capable to distinguish inequivalent handlebody knots and bi-knotted surfaces with homeomorphic complements. Particularly, we obtain an alternative proof of the inequivalence of Ishii et al.'s ha…
We present an algorithm taking a Kirby diagram of a closed oriented $4$-manifold to a trisection diagram of the same manifold. This algorithm provides us with a large number of examples for trisection diagrams of closed oriented $4$-manifolds since many Kirby-diagrammatic descriptions of closed oriented $4$-manifolds are known. That being said, the algorithm does not necessarily provide particularly efficient trisection diagrams. We also extend this algorithm to work for the non-orientable case.
For any closed oriented 3-manifold $M$ with positive simplicial volume and any closed oriented 3-manifold $N$, we prove that there exists a finite cover $M'$ of $M$ that admits a degree-1 map $f:M'\to M$, i.e. M virtually 1-dominates N. This result generalizes previous virtual domination results with closed hyperbolic domain to more general domains.

In this note we show that a closed oriented contact manifold is obtained from the standard contact sphere of the same dimension by contact surgeries on isotropic and coisotropic spheres. In addition, we observe that all closed oriented contact manifolds admit symplectic caps.
We introduce colorings of oriented surface-links by biquasiles using marked graph diagrams. We use these colorings to define counting invariants and Boltzmann enhancements of the biquasile counting invariants for oriented surface-links. We provide examples to show that the invariants can distinguish both closed surface-links and cobordisms and are sensitive to orientation.
A {\em blink} is a plane graph with an arbitrary bipartition of its edges. As a consequence of a recent result of Martelli, I show that the homeomorphisms classes of closed oriented 3-manifolds are in 1-1 correspondence with specific classes of blinks. In these classes, two blinks are equivalent if they are linked by a finite sequence of local moves, where each one appears in a concrete list of 64 moves: they organize in 8 types, each being essentially the same move on 8 simply related configurations. The size of the list can be substantially decreased at the cost of loosing symmetry, just by …
Let $M$ be a connected, closed, oriented three-manifold and $K$, $L$ two rationally null-homologous oriented simple closed curves in $M$. We give an explicit algorithm for computing the linking number between $K$ and $L$ in terms of a presentation of $M$ as an irregular dihedral $3$-fold cover of $S^3$ branched along a knot $α\subset S^3$. Since every closed, oriented three-manifold admits such a presentation, our results apply to all (well-defined) linking numbers in all three-manifolds. Furthermore, ribbon obstructions for a knot $α$ can be derived from dihedral covers of $α$. The linking nu…
We study closed, oriented 4-manifolds whose fundamental group is that of a closed, oriented, aspherical 3-manifold. We show that two such 4-manifolds are stably diffeomorphic if and only if they have the same w_2-type and their equivariant intersection forms are stably isometric. We also find explicit algebraic invariants that determine the stable classification for spin manifolds in this class.
It is shown in this paper that given any closed oriented hyperbolic 3-manifold, every closed oriented 3-manifold is mapped onto by a finite cover of that manifold via a map of degree 1, or in other words, virtually 1-dominated by that manifold. This improves a known result of virtual 2-domination. The proof invokes a recently developed enhanced version of the connection principle in good pants constructions.
We show that the homotopy type of a finite oriented Poincaré 4-complex is determined by its quadratic 2-type provided its fundamental group is finite and has a dihedral Sylow 2-subgroup. By combining with results of Hambleton-Kreck and Bauer, this applies in the case of smooth oriented 4-manifolds whose fundamental group is a finite subgroup of SO(3). An important class of examples are elliptic surfaces with finite fundamental group.
In [Jo14] and [Jo18] Vaughan Jones introduced a construction which yields oriented knots and links from elements of the oriented Thompson group $\vec{F}$. In this paper we prove, by analogy with Alexander's classical theorem establishing that every knot or link can be represented as a closed braid, that given an oriented knot/link $\vec{L}$, there exists an element $g$ in $\vec{F}$ whose closure $\vec{\mathcal{L}}(g)$ is $\vec L$.
We establish the method of holomorphic handle attaching to the strongly pseudoconcave boundary of a complex surface. We use this for proving the following statements: (1) every closed connected oriented contact 3-manifold can be filled as the strongly pseudoconcave boundary of a compact complex surface; (2) any two closed connected oriented contact 3-manifolds are complex cobordant. Moreover, we show that such complex surface (or complex cobordism) can be taken Kähler.
Suppose that $\mathcal F$ is a transversely oriented, codimension one foliation of a connected, closed, oriented 3-manifold. Suppose also that $\mathcal F$ has continuous tangent plane field and is {\sl taut}; that is, closed smooth transversals to $\mathcal F$ pass through every point of $M$. We show that if $\mathcal F$ is not the product foliation $S^1\times S^2$, then $\mathcal F$ can be $C^0$ approximated by weakly symplectically fillable, universally tight, contact structures. This extends work of Eliashberg-Thurston on approximations of taut, transversely oriented $C^2$ foliations to th…
We say that a topological $n$-manifold $N$ is a cubical $n$-manifold if it is contained in the $n$-skeleton of the canonical cubulation $\mathcal{C}$ of ${\mathbb{R}}^{n+k}$ ($k\geq1$). In this paper, we prove that any closed, oriented cubical $2$-manifold has a transverse field of 2-planes in the sense of Whitehead and therefore it is smoothable by a small ambient isotopy.
In this paper we provide a classification of fundamental group elements representing simple closed curves on the punctured Klein bottle, Similar to the Birman-Series classification of curves on the punctured torus[1]. In the process, an explicit description of the mapping class group is given. We then apply this to give a counterexample the simple loop conjecture for representations from the Klein bottle group to PGL(2,R).
We prove that the 3-manifold obtained by gluing the complements of two nontrivial knots in homology 3-sphere instanton L-spaces, by a map which identifies meridians with Seifert longitudes, cannot be an instanton L-space. This recovers the recent theorem of Lidman, Pinzon-Caicedo, and Zentner that the fundamental group of every closed, oriented, toroidal 3-manifold admits a nontrivial SU(2)-representation, and consequently Zentner's earlier result that the fundamental group of every closed, oriented 3-manifold besides the 3-sphere admits a nontrivial SL(2,C)-representation.
This is the second paper in this series. Following the setup of Meng-Taubes, we define the monopole Floer homology for any pair $(Y,ω)$, where $Y$ is a compact oriented 3-manifold with toroidal boundary and $ω$ is a suitable closed 2-form viewed as a decoration. This construction fits into a (3+1)-topological quantum field theory and generalizes the work of Kronheimer-Mrowka for closed oriented 3-manifolds. By a theorem of Meng-Taubes and Turaev, the Euler characteristic of this Floer homology recovers the Milnor-Turaev torsion invariant of the 3-manifold.
Let $A\neq 0$ be a complex number with $ |A|\neq 1$. Let $M$ be a compact smooth oriented $3$-manifold, the $SU(3)$-skein space of $M$, $S_A(M)$, is the vector space over $\mathbb{C}$ generated by framed oriented links (including framed oriented trivalent graphs in $M$) quotient by the $SU(3)$-skein relations due to Kuperberg. For a closed, orientable surface $F$, we construct a local diffeomorphism invariant trace on $S_A(F\times I)$.
The simplicial volume of oriented closed connected smooth manifolds that admit a non-trivial smooth $S^1$-action vanishes. In the present work we prove a version of this result for the integral foliated simplicial volume of aspherical manifolds: The integral foliated simplicial volume of aspherical oriented closed connected smooth manifolds that admit a non-trivial smooth $S^1$-action vanishes. Our proof uses the geometric construction of Yano's proof for ordinary simplicial volume as well as the parametrised uniform boundary condition for $S^1$.
We classify up to conjugacy the group generated by a commuting pair of a periodic diffeomorphism and a hyperelliptic involution on an oriented closed surface. This result can be viewed as a refinement of Ishizaka's result on classification of the mapping classes of hyperelliptic periodic diffeomorphisms. As an application, we obtain the Dehn twist presentations of hyperelliptic periodic mapping classes, which are closely related to the ones obtained by Ishizaka.
Let $X$ be a closed oriented connected topological manifold of dimension $n\geq 5$. The structure group of $X$ is the abelian group of equivalence classes of all pairs $(f, M)$ such that $M$ is a closed oriented manifold and $f\colon M \to X$ is an orientation-preserving homotopy equivalence. The main purpose of this article is to prove that a higher rho invariant defines a group homomorphism from the topological structure group of $X$ to the $C^*$-algebraic structure group of $X$. In fact, we introduce a higher rho invariant map on the homology manifold structure group of a closed oriented co…
