We study virtual isotopy sequences with classical initial and final diagrams, asking when such a sequence can be changed into a classical isotopy sequence by replacing virtual crossings with classical crossings. An example of a sequence for which no such virtual crossing realization exists is given. A conjecture on conditions for realizability of virtual isotopy sequences is proposed, and a sufficient condition for realizability is found. The conjecture is reformulated in terms of 2-knots and knots in thickened surfaces.
The aim of the present paper is to prove that the minimal number of virtual crossings for some families of virtual knots grows quadratically with respect to the minimal number of classical crossings. All previously known estimates for virtual crossing number were principally no more than linear in the number of classical crossings (or, what is the same, in the number of edges of a virtual knot diagram) and no virtual knot was found with virtual crossing number greater than the classical crossing number.
We compute lower bounds on the virtual crossing number and minimal surface genus of virtual knot diagrams from the arrow polynomial. In particular, we focus on several interesting examples.
We address the question of detecting minimal virtual diagrams with respect to the number of virtual crossings. This problem is closely connected to the problem of detecting the minimal number of additional intersection points for a generic immersion of a singular link in $R^{2}$. We tackle this problem by the so-called $ξ$-polynomial whose leading (lowest) degree naturally estimates the virtual crossing number. Several sufficient conditions for minimality together with infinite series of new examples are given. We also state several open questions about $M$-diagrams, which are minimal accordin…
We introduce a new polynomial invariant of virtual knots and links and use this invariant to compute a lower bound on the virtual crossing number and the minimal surface genus.
Gordian complex of knots was defined by Hirasawa and Uchida as the simplicial complex whose vertices are knot isotopy classes in $\mathbb{S}^3$. Later Horiuchi and Ohyama defined Gordian complex of virtual knots using $v$-move and forbidden moves. In this paper we discuss Gordian complex of knots by region crossing change and Gordian complex of virtual knots by arc shift move. Arc shift move is a local move in the virtual knot diagram which results in reversing orientation locally between two consecutive crossings. We show the existence of an arbitrarily high dimensional simplex in both the Go…
In this note we give a new lower bound on the virtual crossing number via the writhe polynomial, which refines a result of B. Mellor. The proof is based on a new interpretation of the writhe polynomial. The characterization of the writhe polynomial is also discussed.
The virtual unknotting number of a virtual knot is the minimal number of crossing changes that makes the virtual knot to be the unknot, which is defined only for virtual knots virtually homotopic to the unknot. We focus on the virtual knot obtained from the standard (p,q)-torus knot diagram by replacing all crossings on one overstrand into virtual crossings and prove that its virtual unknotting number is equal to the unknotting number of the $(p,q)$-torus knot, i.e. it is (p-1)(q-1)/2.
We introduce the multiplexing of a crossing, replacing a classical crossing of a virtual link diagram with multiple crossings which is a mixture of classical and virtual. For integers $m_{i}$ $(i=1,\ldots,n)$ and an ordered $n$-component virtual link diagram $D$, a new virtual link diagram $D(m_{1},\ldots,m_{n})$ is obtained from $D$ by the multiplexing of all crossings. For welded isotopic virtual link diagrams $D$ and $D'$, $D(m_{1},\ldots,m_{n})$ and $D'(m_{1},\ldots,m_{n})$ are welded isotopic. From the point of view of classical link theory, it seems very interesting that $D(m_{1},\ldots,…
A virtual link may be defined as an equivalence class of diagrams, or alternatively as a stable equivalence class of links in thickened surfaces. We prove that a minimal crossing virtual link diagram has minimal genus across representatives of the stable equivalence class. This is achieved by constructing a new parity theory for virtual links. As corollaries, we prove that the crossing, bridge, and ascending numbers of a classical link do not decrease when it is regarded as a virtual link. This extends corresponding results in the case of virtual knots due to Manturov and Chernov.
The virtual skein relation for the Jones polynomial of the virtual link diagram was introduced by N. Kamada, S. Nakabo, and S. Satoh. H. A. Dye, L. H. Kauffman, and Y. Miyazawa introduced multivariable polynomial, an invariant of virtual links, which is a refinement of Jones polynomial. In this paper, we give a skein relation for the multivariable polynomials among positive, negative, and virtual crossings with some restrictions. We apply this relation to study some properties of virtual links obtained by replacing a real crossing by a virtual crossing.
Given a virtual link diagram $D$, we define its unknotting index $U(D)$ to be minimum among $(m, n)$ tuples, where $m$ stands for the number of crossings virtualized and $n$ stands for the number of classical crossing changes, to obtain a trivial link diagram. By using span of a diagram and linking number of a diagram we provide a lower bound for unknotting index of a virtual link. Then using warping degree of a diagram, we obtain an upper bound. Both these bounds are applied to find unknotting index for virtual links obtained from pretzel links by virtualizing some crossings
We use crossing parity to construct a generalization of biquandles for virtual knots which we call Parity Biquandles. These structures include all biquandles as a standard example referred to as the even parity biquandle. Additionally, we find all Parity Biquandles arising from the Alexander Biquandle and Quaternionic Biquandles. For a particular construction named the z-Parity Alexander Biquandle we show that the associated polynomial yields a lower bound on the number of odd crossings as well as the total number of real crossings and virtual crossings for the virtual knot. Moreover we extend…
We construct new invariant polynomial for long virtual knots. It is a generalization of Alexander polynomial. We designate it by $ζ$ meaning an analogy with $ζ$-polynomial for virtual links. A degree of $ζ$-polynomial estimates a virtual crossing number. We describe some application of $ζ$-polynomial for the study of minimal long virtual diagrams with respect number of virtual crossings.
F-polynomials for virtual knots were defined by Kaur, Prabhakar and Vesnin in 2018 using flat virtual knot invariants. These polynomials naturally generalize Kauffman's affine index polynomial and use smoothing in classical crossing of a virtual knot diagram. In this paper we introduce weight functions for ordered orientable virtual and flat virtual link. A flat virtual link is an equivalence class of virtual links in respect to a local symmetry changing type of classical crossing in a diagram. By considering three types of smoothings in classical crossings of a virtual link diagram and suitab…
Previous work used polygonal realizations of knots to reduce the problem of computing the superbridge number of a realization to a linear programming problem, leading to new sharp upper bounds on the superbridge index of a number of knots. The present work extends this technique to polygonal realizations with an odd number of edges and determines the exact superbridge index of many new knots, including the majority of the 9-crossing knots for which it was previously unknown and, for the first time, several 12-crossing knots. Interestingly, at least half of these superbridge-minimizing polygona…
In this paper, we compute the slice genus for many low-crossing virtual knots. For instance, we show that 1295 out of 92800 virtual knots with 6 or fewer crossings are slice, and that all but 248 of the rest are not slice. Key to these results are computations of Turaev's graded genus, which we show extends to give an invariant of virtual knot concordance. The graded genus is remarkably effective as a slice obstruction, and we develop an algorithm that applies virtual unknotting operations to determine the slice genus of many virtual knots with 6 or fewer crossings.
New presentations of a link and a virtual link are introduced and algebraic systems on links and virtual links are constructed respectively. Based on the algebraic systems, Reduction Crossing Algorithms for them are proposed which are used to reduce the number of crossings in a link and virtual link. For known unknots, one can transform them into a trivial knot in a polynomial time by applying corresponding algorithm. As special consequences, Goeritz's unknot and Thistlethwaite's unknot are unknotted. Moreover, an infinite family of knots $K_{G_{2k,2l}}$ are unknotted in $O(n^2)$ time where $n…
A virtual string can be defined as a closed curve on a surface modulo certain equivalence relations. Turaev defined several invariants of virtual strings which we use to produce a table of virtual strings up to 4 crossings. We discuss progress in extending the tabulation to 5 crossings. We also provide a counter-example to a statement of Kadokami.
We use the Bar-Natan Zh-correspondence to identify the generalized Alexander polynomial of a virtual knot with the Alexander polynomial of a two component welded link. We show that the Zh-map is functorial under concordance, and also that Satoh's Tube map (from welded links to ribbon knotted tori in $S^4$) is functorial under concordance. In addition, we extend classical results of Chen, Milnor, and Hillman on the lower central series of link groups to links in thickened surfaces. Our main result is that the generalized Alexander polynomial vanishes on any knot in a thickened surface which is …
A sequence of $F$-polynomials $\{ F^n_K (t, \ell)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ of virtual knots $K$ was defined by Kaur, Prabhakar, and Vesnin in 2018. These polynomials have been expressed in terms of index value of crossing and $n$-writhe of $K$. By the construction, $F$-polynomials are generalizations of the Kauffman's Affine Index Polynomial, and are invariants of virtual knot $K$. We present values of $F$-polynomials of oriented virtual knots having at most four classical crossings in a diagram.
In this paper we introduce a new invariant of virtual knots and links that is non-trivial for infinitely many virtuals, but is trivial on classical knots and links. The invariant is initially be expressed in terms of a relative of the bracket polynomial and then extracted from this polynomial in terms of its exponents, particularly for the case of knots. This analog of the bracket polynomial will be denoted {K} (with curly brackets) and called the binary bracket polynomial. The key to the combinatorics of the invariant is an interpretation of the state sum in terms of 2-colorings of the associ…
Virtual index cocycle is the 1-cochain that counts virtual crossings in the arcs of a virtual link diagram. We show how this cocycle can be used to reformulate and unify some known invariants of virtual links.
A realization of a virtual link diagram is obtained by choosing over/under markings for each virtual crossing. Any realization can also be obtained from some representation of the virtual link. (A representation of a virtual link is a link diagram on an oriented 2-dimensional surface.) We prove that if a minimal genus representation meets certain criteria then there is a minimal genus representation resulting in a knotted realization.
We prove that a virtual link diagrams satisfying two conditions on the Khovanov homology is minimal, that is, there is no virtual diagram representing the same link with smaller number of crossings. This approach works for both classical and virtual links
In this paper, we define the parity virtual Alexander polynomial following the work of BDGGHN [1] and Kaestner and Kauffman [10]. The properties of this invariant are explored and some examples are computed. In particular, the invariant demonstrates that many virtual knots can not be unknotted by crossing change on only odd crossings.
A pseudodiagram is a diagram of a knot with some crossing information missing. We review and expand the theory of pseudodiagrams introduced by R. Hanaki. We then extend this theory to the realm of virtual knots, a generalization of knots. In particular, we investigate how much crossing information must be known to conclude that a diagram is a diagram of the unknot (the trivializing number). We also consider how much information is necessary to identify a non-trivial knot, a classical knot, or a non-classical knot. We then apply pseudodiagram theory to develop new upper bounds on unknotting num…
We investigate an application of crossing parity for the bracket expansion of the Jones polynomial for virtual knots. In addition we consider an application of parity for the arrow polynomial as well as for the categorifications of both polynomials. We present a number of examples found through our calculations. We provide tables of calculations for these invariants on virtual knots with at most 4 real crossings.

The theory of welded and extended welded knots is a generalization of classical knot theory. Welded (resp. extended welded) knot diagrams include virtual crossings (resp. virtual crossings and wen marks) and are equivalent under an extended set of Reidemeister-type moves. We present a new class of invariants for welded and extended welded knots and links using a multi-skein relation, following Z. Yang's approach for virtual knots. Using this skein-theoretic approach, we find sufficient conditions on the coefficients to obtain invariance under the extended Reidemeister moves appropriate to weld…
In the present paper, we construct an invariant for virtual knots in the thickened sphere with g handles; this invariant is a Laurent polynomial in 2g+3 variables. To this end, we use a modification of the Wirtinger presentation of the knot group and the concept of parity introduced by V.O.Manturov. The section 4 of the paper is devoted to an enhancement of the invariant (construction of the invariant module) by using the parity hierarchy concept suggested by V.O.Manturov. Namely, we discriminate between odd crossings and two types of even crossings; the latter two types depend on whether an e…
A shadow diagram is a knot diagram with under-over information omitted; a shadow movie is a sequence of shadow diagrams related by shadow Reidemeister moves. We show that not every shadow movie arises as the shadow of a Reidemeister movie, meaning a sequence of classical knot diagrams related by classical Reidemeister moves. This means that in Kaufman's theory of virtual knots, virtual crossings cannot simply be viewed as classical crossings where which strand is over has been left `to be determined'.
We construct various functorial maps (projections) from virtual knots to classical knots. These maps are defined on diagrams of virtual knots; in terms of Gauss diagram each of them can be represented as a deletion of some chords. The construction relies upon the notion of parity. As corollaries, we prove that the minimal classical crossing number for classical knots.
Virtual knot theory, introduced by Kauffman, is a generalization of classical knot theory of interest because its finite-type invariant theory is potentially a topological interpretation of Etingof and Kazhdan's theory of quantization of Lie bi-algebras. Classical knots inject into virtual knots, and flat virtual knots is the quotient of virtual knots which equates the real positive and negative crossings, and in this sense is complementary to classical knot theory within virtual knot theory. We completely classify flat virtual tangles with no closed components (pure tangles). This classificat…
We introduce Tristram-Levine signatures of virtual knots and use them to investigate virtual knot concordance. The signatures are defined first for almost classical knots, which are virtual knots admitting homologically trivial representations. The signatures and $ω$-signatures are shown to give bounds on the topological slice genus of almost classical knots, and they are applied to address a recent question of Dye, Kaestner, and Kauffman on the virtual slice genus of classical knots. A conjecture on the topological slice genus is formulated and confirmed for all classical knots with up to 11 …
For a knot diagram $K$, the classical knot group $π_1(K)$ is a free group modulo relations determined by Wirtinger-type relations on the classical crossings. The classical knot group is invariant under the Reidemeister moves. In this paper, we define a set of quotient groups associated to a knot diagram $K$. These quotient groups are invariant under the Reidemeister moves and the set includes the extended knot groups defined by Boden et al and Silver and Williams.
We introduce an infinite family of quantum enhancements of the biquandle counting invariant we call biquandle virtual brackets. Defined in terms of skein invariants of biquandle colored oriented knot and link diagrams with values in a commutative ring $R$ using virtual crossings as smoothings, these invariants take the form of multisets of elements of $R$ and can be written in a "polynomial" form for convenience. The family of invariants defined herein includes as special cases all quandle and biquandle 2-cocycle invariants, all classical skein invariants (Alexander-Conway, Jones, HOMFLYPT and…
A virtual knot is an equivalence class of embeddings of $ S^1 $ into thickened (closed oriented) surfaces, up to self-diffeomorphism of the surface and certain handle stabilisations. The slice genus of a virtual knot is defined diagrammatically, in direct analogy to that of a classical knot. However, it may be defined, equivalently, as follows: a representative of a virtual knot is an embedding of $ S^1 $ into a thickened surface $ Σ_g \times I $; what is the minimal genus of oriented surfaces $ S \hookrightarrow M \times I $ with the embedded $ S^1 $ as boundary, where $ M $ is an oriented $ …
We extend some classical results of Bankwitz, Crowell, and Murasugi to the setting of virtual links. For instance, we show that an alternating virtual link is split if and only if it is visibly split, and that the Alexander polynomial of any almost classical alternating virtual link is alternating. The first result is a consequence of an inequality relating the link determinant and crossing number for any non-split alternating virtual link. The second is a consequence of the matrix-tree theorem of Bott and Mayberry. We extend the first result to semi-alternating virtual links. We discuss the T…
Pseudodiagrams are knot or link diagrams where some of the crossing information is missing. Pseudoknots are equivalence classes of pseudodiagrams, where equivalence is generated by a natural set of Reidemeister moves. In this paper, we introduce a Gauss-diagrammatic theory for pseudoknots which gives rise to the notion of a virtual pseudoknot. We provide new, easily computable isotopy and homotopy invariants for classical and virtual pseudodiagrams. We also give tables of unknotting numbers for homotopically trivial pseudoknots and homotopy classes of homotopically nontrivial pseudoknots. Sinc…
Functorial maps and weak parities are equivalent descriptions of rules of substitution virtual crossings for classical in diagrams of a knot in a way compatible with Reidemeister moves. We introduce the notion of maximal weak parity and describe it for knots in a given closed oriented surface. This weak parity defines a projection from virtual knots to classical knots.
In \cite {FrKn,Sbornik} it was shown that in some knot theories the crucial role is played by {\em parity}, i.e.\ a function on crossings valued in $\{0,1\}$ and behaving nicely with respect to Reidemeister moves. Any parity allows one to construct functorial mappings from knots to knots, to refine many invariants and to prove minimality theorems for knots. In the present paper, we generalise the notion of parity and construct parities with coefficients from an abelian group rather than $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and investigate them for different knot theories. For some knot theories we show that there i…
Vassiliev introduced filtered invariants of knots using an unknotting operation, called crossing changes. Goussarov, Polyak, and Viro introduced other filtered invariants of virtual knots, which order is called GPV-order, using an unknotting operation, called virtualization. We defined other filtered invariants, which order is called $F$-order, of virtual knots using an unknotting operation, called forbidden moves. In this paper, we show that the set of virtual knot invariants of $F$-order $\le n+1$ is strictly stronger than that of $F$-order $\le n$ and that of GPV-order $\le 2n+1$. To obtain…
Virtual links are generalizations of classical links that can be represented by links embedded in a ``thickened'' surface $Σ\times I$, product of a Riemann surface of genus $h$ with an interval. In this paper, we show that virtual alternating links and tangles are naturally associated with the $1/N^2$ expansion of an integral over $N\times N$ complex matrices. We suggest that it is sufficient to count the equivalence classes of these diagrams modulo ordinary (planar) flypes. To test this hypothesis, we use an algorithm coding the corresponding Feynman diagrams by means of permutations that gen…

A classical link in 3-space can be represented by a Gauss paragraph encoding a link diagram in a combinatorial way. A Gauss paragraph may code not a classical link diagram, but a diagram with virtual crossings. We present a criterion and a linear algorithm detecting whether a Gauss paragraph encodes a classical link. We describe Wirtinger presentations realizable by virtual link groups.
A parity is a labeling of the crossings of knot diagrams which is compatible with Reidemeister moves. We define the notion of parity for based matrices -- algebraic objects introduced by V. Turaev in his research of virtual strings. We present the reduced stable parity on based matrix which gives a new example of a parity of virtual knots.
Both classical and virtual knots arise as formal Gauss diagrams modulo some abstract moves corresponding to Reidemeister moves. If we forget about both over/under crossings structure and writhe numbers of knots modulo the same Reidemeister moves, we get a dramatic simplification of virtual knots, which kills all classical knots. However, many virtual knots survive after this simplification. We construct invariants of these objects and present their applications to minimality problems of virtual knots as well as some questions related to graph-links. One can easily generalize these results for …
Kuperberg [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 3 (2003) 587-591] has shown that a virtual knot corresponds (up to generalized Reidemeister moves) to a unique embedding in a thichened surface of minimal genus. If a virtual knot diagram is equivalent to a classical knot diagram then this minimal surface is a sphere. Using this result and a generalised bracket polynomial, we develop methods that may determine whether a virtual knot diagram is non-classical (and hence non-trivial). As examples we show that, except for special cases, link diagrams with a single virtualization and link diagrams with a single virtu…
