A shadow diagram is a knot diagram with under-over information omitted; a shadow movie is a sequence of shadow diagrams related by shadow Reidemeister moves. We show that not every shadow movie arises as the shadow of a Reidemeister movie, meaning a sequence of classical knot diagrams related by classical Reidemeister moves. This means that in Kaufman's theory of virtual knots, virtual crossings cannot simply be viewed as classical crossings where which strand is over has been left `to be determined'.
We show that for each even integer $m\ge 2$, every reduced shadow with sufficiently many crossings is a shadow of a torus knot T(2,m+1), or of a twist knot $T_m$, or of a connected sum of $m$ trefoil knots.
We construct elements of the third quandle homology groups of knot quandles, which are called the shadow fundamental classes. They play the same roles for the shadow quandle cocycle invariants of knots as the fundamental classes of knot quandles does for the quandle cocycle invariants. As an application of the shadow fundamental classes, we show the relation between the shadow quandle cocycle invariants and the based shadow quandle cocycle invariants. Moreover, we will show, for a prime knot, that any third quandle homology classes are considered as images of the shadow fundamental classes of …
Classical topological concepts are applied to understand high performance computing simulations of molecules writhing in three dimensional space. These simulations produce peta-bytes of floating point data, to describe 3 dimensional changes in molecular structure. A zero-th order analysis is achieved by viewing a computer animation synchronized with these changes. The performance demands for animation of this voluminous data can become problematic, but techniques from low-dimensional topology are helpful. The 3D molecule is reduced to a lower dimensional model of a 1-manifold, which undergoes …
Quandle cocycle invariants form a powerful and well developed tool in knot theory. This paper treats their variations - namely, positive and twisted quandle cocycle invariants, and shadow invariants. We interpret the former as particular cases of the latter. As an application, several constructions from the shadow world are extended to the positive and twisted cases. Another application is a sharpening of twisted quandle cocycle invariants for multi-component links.
We show that if $K$ is a fibered ribbon knot in $S^3=\partial B^4$ bounding a ribbon disk $D$, then given an extra transversality condition the fibration on $S^3\setminusν(K)$ extends to a fibration of $B^4\setminusν(D)$. This partially answers a question of Casson and Gordon. In particular, we show the fibration always extends when $D$ has exactly two local minima. More generally, we construct movies of singular fibrations on $4$-manifolds and describe a sufficient property of a movie to imply the underlying $4$-manifold is fibered over $S^1$.
In this paper, we introduce playing games on shadows of knots. We demonstrate two novel games, namely, To Knot or Not to Knot and Much Ado about Knotting. We also discuss winning strategies for these games on certain families of knot shadows. Finally, we suggest variations of these games for further study.
We introduce shadow structures for singular knot theory. Precisely, we define \emph{two} invariants of singular knots and links. First, we introduce a notion of action of a singquandle on a set to define a shadow counting invariant of singular links which generalize the classical shadow colorings of knots by quandles. We then define a shadow polynomial invariant for shadow structures. Lastly, we enhance the shadow counting invariant by combining both the shadow counting invariant and the shadow polynomial invariant. Explicit examples of computations are given.
We consider the recently introduced knotting-unknotting game, in which two players take turns resolving crossings in a knot diagram which initially is missing all its crossing information. Once the knot is fully resolved, the winner is decided by whether the knot is equivalent to the unknot. In this paper we determine which player wins under perfect play in the initial positions (knot shadows) that are guaranteed to produce rational knots or sums of rational knots. This is accomplished in part by an analysis of the effects of pseudo Reidemeister moves on positions, and a computer verification …
Eisermann has shown that the Jones polynomial of a $n$-component ribbon link $L\subset S^3$ is divided by the Jones polynomial of the trivial $n$-component link. We improve this theorem by extending its range of application from links in $S^3$ to colored knotted trivalent graphs in $\#_g(S^2\times S^1)$, the connected sum of $g\geqslant 0$ copies of $S^2\times S^1$. We show in particular that if the Kauffman bracket of a knot in $\#_g(S^2\times S^1)$ has a pole in $q=i$ of order $n$, the ribbon genus of the knot is at least $\frac {n+1}2$. We construct some families of knots in $\#_g(S^2\times…
We present a grid diagram analogue of Carter, Rieger and Saito's smooth movie theorem. Specifically, we give definitions for grid movies, grid movie isotopies and present a definition of grid planar isotopy as a particular subset of the grid diagram moves: stabilization, destabilization and commutation. We show that grid planar isotopy classes are in 1-1 correspondence with smooth planar isotopy classes by using a new planar grid algorithm that takes a smooth knot diagram to a grid diagram. We then present generalizations of both the smooth and grid movie theorems that apply to surfaces with b…
There are a number of homological knot invariants, each satisfying an unoriented skein exact sequence, which can be realized as the limit page of a spectral sequence starting at a version of the Khovanov chain complex. Compositions of elementary 1-handle movie moves induce a morphism of spectral sequences. These morphisms remain unexploited in the literature, perhaps because there is still an open question concerning the naturality of maps induced by general movies. In this paper we focus on the spectral sequences due to Kronheimer-Mrowka from Khovanov homology to instanton knot Floer homology…
This is a PhD thesis about low dimensional topology, in particular knot thory in 3-manifolds also different from the 3-sphere, topological applications of quantum invariants, and Turaev's shadows. There is an introduction and a survey for these topics. The thesis uses skein theory and focues on the connected sum of copies of S^1xS^2 and on the 3-tours as ambient manifolds. The skein space of the 3-torus is computed. The Tait conjecture and Eisermann's theorem have been extended to the connected sums of copies of S^1xS^2. The knots and links in S^1xS^2 whose crossing number is at most 3 are tab…
Knotted trivalent graphs (KTGs) form a rich algebra with a few simple operations: connected sum, unzip, and bubbling. With these operations, KTGs are generated by the unknotted tetrahedron and Moebius strips. Many previously known representations of knots, including knot diagrams and non-associative tangles, can be turned into KTG presentations in a natural way. Often two sequences of KTG operations produce the same output on all inputs. These `elementary' relations can be subtle: for instance, there is a planar algebra of KTGs with a distinguished cycle. Studying these relations naturally lea…
Combinatorial two-player games have recently been applied to knot theory. Examples of this include the Knotting-Unknotting Game and the Region Unknotting Game, both of which are played on knot shadows. These are turn-based games played by two players, where each player has a separate goal to achieve in order to win the game. In this paper, we introduce the Linking-Unlinking Game which is played on two-component link shadows. We then present winning strategies for the Linking-Unlinking Game played on all shadows of two-component rational tangle closures and played on a large family of general t…
We compute the Kauffman bracket polynomial of the three-lead Turk's head, the chain sinnet and the figure-eight chain shadow diagrams. Each of these knots can in fact be constructed by repeatedly concatenating the same 3-tangle, respectively, then taking the closure. The bracket is then evaluated by expressing the state diagrams of the concerned 3-tangle by means of the Kauffman monoid diagram's elements.
In this paper, we discuss filamentations on oriented chord diagrams. When a filamentation cannot be realized on an oriented chord diagram, then the corresponding flat virtual knot is non-trivial. If a flat knot diagram is non-trivial, then any virtual diagram whose shadow is the flat diagram must also be non-trivial. We introduce a class of flat diagrams for which no filamentations exist. This class gives the first example of an infinite set of virtual knots for which the Jones polynomial and the fundamental group both evaluate trivially. The related generalized Alexander polynomials for the v…
We consider the classical problem of a position of n-dimensional manifold M in R^{n+2}. We show that we can define the fundamental (n+1)-cycle and the shadow fundamental (n+2)-cycle for a fundamental quandle of a knotting M to R^{n+2}. In particular, we show that for any fixed quandle, quandle coloring, and shadow quandle coloring, of a diagram of M embedded in R^{n+2} we have (n+1)- and (n+2)-(co)cycle invariants (i.e. invariant under Roseman moves). We speculate on a similar construction for general Yang-Baxter operators.
