We obtain a characterization in terms of dynamical systems of those r-discrete groupoids for which the groupoid C*-algebra is approximately finite-dimensional (AF). These ideas are then used to compute the K-theory for AF algebras by utilizing the actions of these partial homeomorphisms, and these K-theoretic calculations are applied to some specific examples of AF algebras. Finally, we show that, for a certain class of dimension groups, a groupoid can be obtained directly from the dimension group's structure whose associated C*-algebra has K_0 group isomorphic to the original dimension group.
We introduce the notion of the partial group algebra with projections and relations and show that this C*-algebra is a partial crossed product. Examples of partial group algebras with projections and relations are the Cuntz-Krieger algebras and the unitization of C*-algebras of directed graphs.
For a given inverse semigroup S , we introduce the notion of algebraic crossed product by using a given partial action of S, and we will prove that under some condition it is associative. Also we will introduce the concept of partial semigroup algebra K_{Par}(S) , and we show that the suitable quotient of K_{Par}(S) is a sort of crossed product.
We describe the envelope C*-algebra associated to a partial action of a countable discrete group on a locally compact space as a groupoid C*-algebra (more precisely as a C*-algebra from an equivalence relation) and we use our approach to show that, for a large class of partial actions of Z on the Cantor set, the envelope C*-algebra is an AF-algebra. We also completely characterize partial actions of a countable discrete group on a compact space such that the envelope action acts in a Hausdorff space.
In this paper we extend the constructions of Boava and Exel to present the C*-algebra associated with an injective endomorphism of a group with finite cokernel as a partial group algebra and consequently as a partial crossed product. With this representation we present another way to study such C*-algebras, only using tools from partial crossed products.
A partial action is associated with a normal weakly left resolving labelled space such that the crossed product and labelled space $C^*$-algebras are isomorphic. An improved characterization of simplicity for labelled space $C^*$-algebras is given and applied to $C^*$-algebras of subshifts.
We define partial product systems over N. They generalise product systems over N and Fell bundles over Z. We define Toeplitz C*-algebras and relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras for them and show that the section C*-algebra of a Fell bundle over Z is a relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. We describe the gauge-invariant ideals in the Toeplitz C*-algebra.
A power partial isometry (PPI) is an element $v$ of a $C^*$-algebra with the property that every power $v^n$ is a partial isometry. The goal of this paper is to identify the universal $C^*$-algebra generated by a PPI with (a slight modification of) the algebra of the finite sections method for Toeplitz operators with continuous generating function, as first described by Albrecht Böttcher and Bernd Silbermann in 1983.
In this paper, we realize C*-algebras of generalized Boolean dynamical systems as partial crossed products. Reciprocally, we give some sufficient conditions for a partial crossed product to be isomorphic to a C*-algebra of a generalized Boolean dynamical system. As an application, we show that gauge-invariant ideals of C*-algebras of generalized Boolean dynamical systems are themselves C*-algebras of generalized Boolean dynamical system.
We present a different way to study the C*-algebra associated with an injective endomorphism of a group G of infinite cokernel. We follow the work of Boava and Exel to construct a partial crossed product representation of that C*-algebra and show properties only using such tools.
Certain $*$-semigroups are associated with the universal $C^*$-algebra generated by a partial isometry, which is itself the universal $C^*$-algebra of a $*$-semigroup. A fundamental role for a $*$-structure on a semigroup is emphasized, and ordered and matricially ordered $*$-semigroups are introduced, along with their universal $C^*$-algebras. The universal $C^*$-algebra generated by a partial isometry is isomorphic to a relative Cuntz-Pimsner $C^*$-algebra of a $C^*$-correspondence over the $C^*$-algebra of a matricially ordered $*$-semigroup. One may view the $C^*$-algebra of a partial isom…
In a recent paper, Pardo and the first named author introduced a class of C*-algebras which which are constructed from an action of a group on a graph. This class was shown to include many C*-algebras of interest, including all Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class. In this paper, we study the conditions under which these algebras can be realized as partial crossed products of commutative C*-algebras by groups. In addition, for any $n\geq 2$ we present a large class of groups such that for any group $H$ in this class, the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_n$ is isomorphic to a partial crossed product o…
We define proper, free and commuting partial actions on upper semicontinuous bundles of $C^*-$algebras. With such, we construct the $C^*-$algebra induced by a partial action and a partial actions on that algebra. Using those action we give a generalization, to partial actions, of Raeburn's Symmetric Imprimitivity Theorem.
We bound the nuclear dimension of crossed products associated to some partial actions of finite groups or $\mathbb{Z}$ on finite dimensional locally compact Hausdorff second countable spaces. Our results apply to globalizable partial actions, finite group partial actions, minimal partial automorphisms, and partial automorphisms acting on zero-dimensional spaces, or a class of one dimensional spaces, containing $1$-dimensional CW complexes. This extends work on global systems by Hirshberg and Wu.
Partial actions of discrete abelian groups can be used to construct both groupoid C*-algebras and partial crossed product algebras. In each case there is a natural notion of an analytic subalgebra. We show that for countable subgroups of the real numbers and free partial actions, these constructions yield the same C*-algebras and the same analytic subalgebras. We also show that under suitable hypotheses an analytic partial crossed product preserves all the information in the dynamical system in the sense that two analytic partial crossed products are isomorphic as Banach algebras if, and only …
Recently, Cuntz and Li introduced the C^*-algebra A[R] associated to an integral domain R with finite quotients. In this paper, we show that A[R] is a partial group algebra of the group $K \rtimes K^x$ with suitable relations, where K is the field of fractions of R. We identify the spectrum of this relations and we show that it is homeomorphic to the profinite completion of R. By using partial crossed product theory, we reconstruct some results proved by Cuntz and Li. Among them, we prove that $\ar$ is simple by showing that the action is topologically free and minimal.
We prove that every AF-algebra is isomorphic to a crossed product of a commutative AF-algebra by a partial automorphism. The case of UHF-algebras is treated in detail.
We associate to each discrete partial dynamical system a universal C*-algebra generated by partial isometries satisfying relations given by a Boolean algebra connected to the discrete partial dynamical system in question. We show that for symbolic dynamical systems like one-sided and two-sided shift spaces and topological Markov chains with an arbitrary state space the C*-algebras usually associated to them, can be obtained in this way. As a consequence of this, we will be able to show that for two-sided shift spaces having a certain property, the crossed product of the two-sided shift space i…
Connections between partial dynamcial systems, a generalized notion of partial dynamical systems defined by nested sequences of partial homeomorphisms, and triangular AF algebras which admit an integer-valued cocycle are established.
A collection of partial isometries whose range and initial projections satisfy a specified set of conditions often gives rise to a partial representation of a group. The C*-algebra generated by the partial isometries is thus a quotient of the universal C*-algebra for partial representations of the group, from which it inherits a crossed product structure, of an abelian C*-algebra by a partial action of the group. Questions of faithfulness of representations, simplicity, and ideal structure of these C*-algebras can then be addressed in a unified manner from within the theory of partial actions.…
We realize Leavitt path algebras as partial skew group rings and give new proofs, based on partial skew group ring theory, of the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem and simplicity criteria for Leavitt path algebras.
In arXiv:math/0603621 we introduced the notion of a partial translation $C^*$-algebra for a discrete metric space. Here we demonstrate that several important classical $C^*$-algebras and extensions arise naturally by considering partial translation algebras associated with subspaces of trees.
We realize Leavitt ultragraph path algebras as partial skew group rings. Using this realization we characterize artinian ultragraph path algebras and give simplicity criteria for these algebras.
We study the interplay between Steinberg algebras and partial skew rings: For a partial action of a group in a Hausdorff, locally compact, totally disconnected topological space, we realize the associated partial skew group ring as a Steinberg algebra (over the transformation groupoid attached to the partial action). We then apply this realization to characterize diagonal preserving isomorphisms of partial skew group rings, over commutative algebras, in terms of continuous orbit equivalence of the associated partial actions. Finally, we show that any Steinberg algebra, associated to a Hausdorf…

For a free partial action of a group in a set we realize the associated partial skew group ring as an algebra of functions with finite support over an equivalence relation and we use this result to characterize the ideals in the partial skew group ring. This generalizes, to the purely algebraic setting, the known characterization of partial C*-crossed products as groupoid C*-algebras. For completeness we include a new proof of the C* result for free partial actions.
We introduce the notion of continuous twisted partial actions of a locally compact group on a C*-algebra. With such, we construct an associated C*-algebraic bundle called the semidirect product bundle. Our main theorem shows that, given any C*-algebraic bundle which is second countable and whose unit fiber algebra is stable, there is a continuous twisted partial action of the base group on the unit fiber algebra, whose associated semidirect product bundle is isomorphic to the given one.
A notion of partial ideal for an operator algebra is a weakening the notion of ideal where the defining algebraic conditions are enforced only in the commutative subalgebras. We show that, in a von Neumann algebra, the ultraweakly closed two-sided ideals, which we call total ideals, correspond to the unitarily invariant partial ideals. The result also admits an equivalent formulation in terms of central projections. We place this result in the context of an investigation into notions of spectrum of noncommutative $C^*$-algebras.
In this paper, we introduce C*-algebraic partial compact quantum groups, which are quantizations of topological groupoids with discrete object set and compact morphism spaces. These C*-algebraic partial compact quantum groups are generalisations of Hayashi's compact face algebras to the case where the object set can be infinite. They form the C*-algebraic counterpart of an algebraic theory of partial compact quantum groups developed in an earlier paper by the author and T. Timmermann, the correspondence between which will be dealt with in a separate paper. As an interesting example to illustra…
Given a partial action αof a group G on an associative algebra A we consider the crossed product A x_αG. Using the algebras of multipliers of ideals of A we prove that A x_αG is associative, provided that all ideals of A are idempotent. This generalizes a previous result on the associativity of A x_αG in the context of C*-algebras. We also give a criteria for the existence of a global extension of a given partial action on an algebra and use crossed products to study relations between partial actions of groups on algebras and partial representations. As an application we endow partial group al…
Given a partial action of a discrete group $G$ on a Hausdorff, locally compact, totally disconnected topological space $X$, we consider the correponding partial action of $G$ on the algebra $L_c(X)$ consisting of all locally constant, compactly supported functions on $X$, taking values in a given field $K$. We then study the ideal structure of the algebraic partial crossed product $L_c(X)\rtimes G$. After developping a theory of induced ideals, we show that every ideal in $L_c(X)\rtimes G$ may be obtained as the intersection of ideals induced from isotropy groups, thus proving an algebraic ver…
The article discusses the interrelation between relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and partial isometric crossed products, and presents a procedure that reduces any given Hilbert bimodule to the "smallest" Hilbert bimodule yielding the same relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebra as the initial one. In the context of crossed products this reduction procedure corresponds to reduction of C*-dynamical systems.
A discrete group $\G$ is called rigidly symmetric if the projective tensor product between the convolution algebra $\ell^1(\G)$ and any $C^*$-algebra $\A$ is symmetric. We show that in each topologically graded $C^*$-algebra over a rigidly symmetric group there is a $\ell^1$-type symmetric Banach $^*$-algebra, which is inverse closed in the $C^*$-algebra. This includes new general classes, as algebras admitting dual actions and partial crossed products. Results including convolution dominated kernels, inverse closedness with respect with ideals or weighted versions of the $\ell^1$-decay are in…
Using the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients, we develop a K-theory formula for reduced C*-algebras of strongly $0$-$E$-unitary inverse semigroups, or equivalently, for certain reduced partial crossed products. In the case of semigroup C*-algebras, we obtain a generalization of previous K-theory results of Cuntz, Echterhoff and the author without having to assume the Toeplitz condition. As applications, we discuss semigroup C*-algebras of Artin monoids, Baumslag-Solitar monoids, one-relator monoids, C*-algebras generated by right regular representations of semigroups from number theory, …
We describe both the Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras and their Toeplitz versions, as crossed products of commutative C*-algebras by partial automorphisms. In the latter case, the commutative algebra has, as its spectrum, the union of the Cantor set and a copy the set of natural numbers N, fitted together in such a way that N is an open dense subset. The partial automorphism is induced by a map that acts like the odometer map on the Cantor set while being the translation by one on N. From this we deduce, by taking quotients, that the Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras are isomorphic to the (classical) crossed…
In an earlier paper, the authors introduced partial translation algebras as a generalisation of group C*-algebras. Here we establish an extension of partial translation algebras, which may be viewed as an excision theorem in this context. We apply this general framework to compute the K-theory of partial translation algebras and group C*-algebras in the context of almost invariant subspaces of discrete groups. This generalises the work of Cuntz, Lance, Pimsner and Voiculescu. In particular we provide a new perspective on Pimsner's calculation of the K-theory for a graph product of groups.
We continue the study of isomorphisms of tensor algebras associated to a C*-correspondences in the sense of Muhly and Solel. Inspired by by recent work of Davidson, Ramsey and Shalit, we solve isomorphism problems for tensor algebras arising from weighted partial dynamical systems. We provide complete bounded / isometric classification results for tensor algebras arising from weighted partial systems, both in terms of the C*-correspondences associated to them, and in terms of the original dynamics. We use this to show that the isometric isomorphism and algebraic / bounded isomorphism problems …
In this present article, we etablish some existence results of $φ-$fixed point of a mapping in a $C^{\ast}$-algebra valued metric spaces and we deduce some fixed point theorems in $C^{\ast}$-algebra valued partial metric spaces. Non-trivial examples are further provided to support the hypotheses of our results.
We introduce a method to study C*-algebras possessing an action of the circle group, from the point of view of its internal structure and its K-theory. Under relatively mild conditions our structure Theorem shows that any C*-algebra, where an action of the circle is given, arises as the result of a construction that generalizes crossed products by the group of integers. Such a generalized crossed product construction is carried out for any partial automorphism of a C*-algebra, where by a partial automorphism we mean an isomorphism between two ideals of the given algebra. Our second main result…
Extending the work of Cuntz and Vershik, we develop a general notion of independence for commuting group endomorphisms. Based on this concept, we initiate the study of irreversible algebraic dynamical systems, which can be thought of as irreversible analogues of the dynamical systems considered by Schmidt. To each irreversible algebraic dynamical system, we associate a universal C*-algebra and show that it is a UCT Kirchberg algebra under natural assumptions. Moreover, we discuss the structure of the core subalgebra, which is closely related to generalised Bunce-Deddens algebras in the sense o…
Every partial algebra is the colimit of its total subalgebras. We prove this result for partial Boolean algebras (including orthomodular lattices) and the new notion of partial C*-algebras (including noncommutative C*-algebras), and variations such as partial complete Boolean algebras and partial AW*-algebras. The first two results are related by taking projections. As corollaries we find extensions of Stone duality and Gelfand duality. Finally, we investigate the extent to which the Bohrification construction, that works on partial C*-algebras, is functorial.
