We prove the following result, conjectured by Alan Weinstein: every smooth proper Lie groupoid near a fixed point is locally linearizable, i.e. it is locally isomorphic to the associated groupoid of a linear action of a compact Lie group. In combination with a slice theorem of Weinstein, our result implies the smooth linearizability of a proper Lie groupoid in the neighborhood of an orbit under a mild condition.
In this survey, we discuss a series of linearization problems--for Poisson structures, Lie algebroids, and Lie groupoids. The last problem involves a conjecture on the structure of proper groupoids. Attempting to prove this by the method of averaging leads to problems concerning almost actions of compact groups and almost invariant submanifolds for compact group actions. The paper ends with a discussion of possible extensions of the convexity theorems for momentum maps of hamiltonian actions of compact groups.
Motivated by a search for Lie group structures on groups of Poisson diffeomorphisms [24], we investigate linearizability of Poisson structures of Poisson groupoids around the unit section. After extending the Lagrangian neighbourhood theorem to the setting of cosymplectic Lie algebroids, we establish that dual integrations of triangular bialgebroids are always linearizable. Additionally, we show that the (non-dual) integration of a triangular Lie bialgebroid is linearizable whenever the $r$-matrix is of so-called cosymplectic type. The proof relies on the integration of a triangular Lie bialge…
We revisit the linearization theorems for proper Lie groupoids around general orbits (statements and proofs). In the the fixed point case (known as Zung's theorem) we give a shorter and more geometric proof, based on a Moser deformation argument. The passing to general orbits (Weinstein) is given a more conceptual interpretation: as a manifestation of Morita invariance. We also clarify the precise conditions needed for the theorem to hold (which often have been misstated in the literature).
The Linearization Theorem for proper Lie groupoids organizes and generalizes several results for classic geometries. Despite the various approaches and recent works on the subject, the problem of understanding invariant linearization remains somehow open. We address it here, by first giving a counter-example to a previous conjecture, and then proving a sufficient criterion that uses compatible complete metrics and covers the case of proper group actions. We also show a partial converse that fixes and extends previous results in the literature.
Let G be a Lie groupoid over M such that the target-source map from G to M x M is proper. We show that, if O is an orbit of finite type (i.e. which admits a proper function with finitely many critical points), then the restriction G|U of G to some neighborhood U of O in M is isomorphic to a similar restriction of the action groupoid for the linear action of the transitive groupoid G|O on the normal bundle NO. The proof uses a deformation argument based on a cohomology vanishing theorem, along with a slice theorem which is derived from a new result on submersions with a fibre of finite type.
In these lectures notes I discuss the Linearization Theorem for Lie groupoids, and its relation to the various classical linearization theorems for submersions, foliations and group actions. In particular, I explain in some detail the recent metric approach to this problem.
We introduce a notion of metric on a Lie groupoid, compatible with multiplication, and we study its properties. We show that many families of Lie groupoids admit such metrics, including the important class of proper Lie groupoids. The exponential map of these metrics allow us to establish a Linearization Theorem for Riemannian groupoids, obtaining both a simpler proof and a stronger version of the Weinstein-Zung Linearization Theorem for proper Lie groupoids. This new notion of metric has a simplicial nature which will be explored in future papers of this series.
In order to understand the linearization problem around a leaf of a singular foliation, we extend the familiar holonomy map from the case of regular foliations to the case of singular foliations. To this aim we introduce the notion of holonomy transformation. Unlike the regular case, holonomy transformations can not be attached to classes of paths in the foliation, but rather to elements of the holonomy groupoid of the singular foliation. This assignment is injective. Holonomy transformations allow us to link the linearization problem with the compactness of the isotropy group of the holonomy …
To a closed wide Lie subgroupoid $\mathbf{A}$ of a Lie groupoid $\mathbf{L}$, i.e. a Lie groupoid pair, we associate an Atiyah class which we interpret as the obstruction to the existence of $\mathbf{L}$-invariant fibrewise affine connections on the homogeneous space $\mathbf{L}/\mathbf{A}$. For Lie groupoid pairs with vanishing Atiyah class, we show that the left $\mathbf{A}$-action on the quotient space $\mathbf{L}/\mathbf{A}$ can be linearized. In addition to giving an alternative proof of a result of Calaque about the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt map for Lie algebroid pairs with vanishing Atiyah…
This is a concise introduction to the theory of Lie groupoids, with emphasis in their role as models for stacks. After some preliminaries, we review the foundations on Lie groupoids, and we carefully study equivalences and proper groupoids. Differentiable stacks are geometric objects which have manifolds and orbifolds as special instances, and can be presented as the transverse geometry of a Lie groupoid. Two Lie groupoids are equivalent if they are presenting the same stack, and proper groupoids are presentations of separated stacks, which by the linearization theorem are locally modeled by l…
In this paper, we study geometric properties of quotient spaces of proper Lie groupoids. First, we construct a natural stratification on such spaces using an extension of the slice theorem for proper Lie groupoids of Weinstein and Zung. Next, we show the existence of an appropriate metric on the groupoid which gives the associated Lie algebroid the structure of a singular riemannian foliation. With this metric, the orbit space inherits a natural length space structure whose properties are studied. Moreover, we show that the orbit space of a proper Lie groupoid can be triangulated. Finally, we …
We describe the deformation cohomology of a symplectic groupoid, and use it to study deformations via Moser path methods, proving a symplectic groupoid version of the Moser Theorem. Our construction uses the deformation cohomologies of Lie groupoids and of multiplicative forms, and we prove that in the symplectic case, deformation cohomology of both the underlying groupoid and of the symplectic groupoid have de Rham models in terms of differential forms. We use the de Rham model, which is intimately connected to the Bott-Shulman-Stasheff double complex, to compute deformation cohomology in sev…
We discuss a method for constructing multiplicative connections on proper Lie groupoids or, more exactly, for reducing the task of constructing such connections to a number of in principle simpler tasks involving only Lie groupoids that are both proper and regular.
In this paper we prove that every proper Lie groupoid admits a desingularization to a regular proper Lie groupoid. When equipped with a Riemannian metric, we show that it admits a desingularization to a regular Riemannian proper Lie groupoid, arbitrarily close to the original one in the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between the quotient spaces. We construct the desingularization via a successive blow-up construction on a proper Lie groupoid. We also prove that our construction of the desingularization is invariant under Morita equivalence of groupoids, showing that it is a desingularization of the…
A topological groupoid G is K-pointed, if it is equipped with a homomorphism from a topological group K to G. We describe the homotopy groups of such K-pointed topological groupoids and relate these groups to the ordinary homotopy groups in terms of a long exact sequence. As an application, we give an obstruction to presentability of proper regular Lie groupoids.
Groupoids are mathematical structures able to describe symmetry properties more general than those described by groups. They were introduced (and named) by H. Brandt in 1926. Around 1950, Charles Ehresmann used groupoids with additional structures (topological and differentiable) as essential tools in topology and differential geometry. In recent years, Mickael Karasev, Alan Weinstein and Stanisław Zakrzewski independently discovered that symplectic groupoids can be used for the construction of noncommutative deformations of the algebra of smooth functions on a manifold, with potential applica…
Endowing differentiable functions from a compact manifold to a Lie group with the pointwise group operations one obtains the so-called current groups and, as a special case, loop groups. These are prime examples of infinite-dimensional Lie groups modelled on locally convex spaces. In the present paper, we generalise this construction and show that differentiable mappings on a compact manifold (possibly with boundary) with values in a Lie groupoid form infinite-dimensional Lie groupoids which we call current Lie groupoids. We then study basic differential geometry and Lie theory for these Lie g…
We discuss the basic properties of Lie groupoids, Lie algebroids and Lie pseudo-groups in view of applying these techniques to the analysis of Jordan-Hölder resolutions and, subsequently, to the integration of partial differential equations. The present introduction is an extension to Lie groupoids, as far as possible, of the so well known properties and techniques much useful in Lie groups theory. We mention as far as possible since, in the case of Lie groupoids, just the first Lie Theorem holds. As for the prolongation algorithm, it is extremely useful when dealing with groupoids whereas rat…
Lie groupoids and their associated algebroids arise naturally in the study of the constitutive properties of continuous media. Thus, Continuum Mechanics and Differential Geometry illuminate each other in a mutual entanglement of theory and applications. Given any material property, such as the elastic energy or an index of refraction, affected by the state of deformation of the material body, one can automatically associate to it a groupoid. Under conditions of differentiability, this material groupoid is a Lie groupoid. Its associated Lie algebroid plays an important role in the determination…
We observe that any connected proper Lie groupoid whose orbits have codimension at most two admits a globally effective representation on a smooth vector bundle, i.e., one whose kernel consists only of ineffective arrows. As an application, we deduce that any such groupoid can up to Morita equivalence be presented as an extension of some action groupoid G n X with G compact by some bundle of compact Lie groups.
We study deformations of Lie groupoids by means of the cohomology which controls them. This cohomology turns out to provide an intrinsic model for the cohomology of a Lie groupoid with values in its adjoint representation. We prove several fundamental properties of the deformation cohomology including Morita invariance, a van Est theorem, and a vanishing result in the proper case. Combined with Moser's deformation arguments for groupoids, we obtain several rigidity and normal form results.
Let $\mathcal{G} \rightrightarrows M$ be a source locally trivial proper Lie groupoid such that each orbit is of finite type. The orbit projection $M \to M/\mathcal{G}$ is a fibration if and only if $\mathcal{G} \rightrightarrows M$ is regular.
In the following paper we investigate the question: when is a transitive topological groupoid continuously isomorphic to a Lie groupoid? We present many results on the matter which may be considered generalizations of the Hilbert's fifth problem to this context. Most notably we present a "solution" to the problem for proper transitive groupoids and transitive groupoids with compact source fibers.
Motivated by the study of a certain family of classical geometric problems we investigate the existence of multiplicative connections on proper Lie groupoids. We show that one can always deform a given connection which is only approximately multiplicative into a genuinely multiplicative connection. The proof of this fact that we present here relies on a recursive averaging technique. As an application we point out that the study of multiplicative connections on general proper Lie groupoids reduces to the study of longitudinal representations of regular groupoids. We regard our results as a pre…
A proper etale Lie groupoid is modelled as a (noncommutative) spectral geometric space. The spectral triple is built on the algebra of smooth functions on the groupoid base which are invariant under the groupoid action. Stiefel-Whitney classes in Lie groupoid cohomology are introduced to measure the orientability of the tangent bundle and the obstruction to lift the tangent bundle to a spinor bundle. In the case of an orientable and spin Lie groupoid, an invariant spinor bundle and an invariant Dirac operator will be constructed. This data gives rise to a spectral triple. The algebraic orienta…
Given a proper, cocompact action of a Lie groupoid, we define a higher index pairing between invariant elliptic differential operators and smooth groupoid cohomology classes. We prove a cohomological index formula for this pairing by applying the van Est map and algebraic index theory. Finally we discuss in examples the meaning of the index pairing and our index formula.

A classical result in differential geometry states that for a free and proper Lie group action, the quotient map to the orbit space induces an isomorphism between the de Rham complex of differential forms on the orbit space and the basic differential forms on the original manifold. In this paper, this result is generalized to the case of a proper Lie groupoid, in which the orbit space is equipped with the quotient diffeological structure. As an application of this, we obtain a de Rham theorem for the de Rham complex on the orbit space.
We prove that every slim double Lie groupoid with proper core action is completely determined by a factorization of a certain canonically defined "diagonal" Lie groupoid.
For a finitely presented discrete group $Γ$, we introduce two generalizations of the orbifold Euler characteristic and $Γ$-orbifold Euler characteristic to a class of proper topological groupoids large enough to include all cocompact proper Lie groupoids. The $Γ$-Euler characteristic is defined as an integral with respect to the Euler characteristic over the orbit space of the groupoid, and the $Γ$-inertia Euler characteristic is the usual Euler characteristic of the $Γ$-inertia space associated to the groupoid. A key ingredient is the application of o-minimal structures to study orbit spaces …
A groupoid is a small category in which each morphism has an inverse. A topological groupoid is a groupoid in which both sets of objects and morphisms have topologies such that all groupoid structure maps are continuous. The notion of monodromy groupoid of a topological groupoid generalises those of fundamental groupoid and universal covering. It was earlier proved that the monodromy of a locally sectionable topological groupoid has a topological groupoid structure satisfying some properties. In this paper a similar problem is studied for compatible locally trivial topological groupoids.
A Lie groupoid, called \textit{material Lie groupoid}, is associated in a natural way to any elastic material. The corresponding Lie algebroid, called \textit{material algebroid}, is used to characterize the uniformity and the homogeneity properties of the material. The relation to previous results in terms of $G-$structures is discussed in detail. An illustrative example is presented as an application of the theory.
We describe infinitesimally Dirac groupoids via geometric objects that we call Dirac bialgebroids. In the two well-understood special cases of Poisson and presymplectic groupoids, the Dirac bialgebroids are equivalent to the Lie bialgebroids and IM-$2$-forms, respectively. In the case of multiplicative involutive distributions on Lie groupoids, we find new properties of infinitesimal ideal systems.
In this paper, we undertake the study of the Tannaka duality construction for the ordinary representations of a proper Lie groupoid on vector bundles. We show that for each proper Lie groupoid G, the canonical homomorphism of G into the reconstructed groupoid T(G) is surjective, although, contrary to what happens in the case of groups, it may fail to be an isomorphism. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions in order that G may be isomorphic to T(G) and, more generally, in order that T(G) may be a Lie groupoid. We show that if T(G) is a Lie groupoid, the canonical homomorphism from G int…
With the intent of laying the groundwork for a program that aims at explicitly describing the space of Cartan (i.e. multiplicative) connections on a general proper Lie groupoid, we begin to investigate the space of such connections in the regular case. We point out that there is a close relationship between Cartan connections on a proper regular groupoid and representations of the groupoid on its own longitudinal bundle (i.e. on the vector distribution tangent to its orbits). This observation enables us to reduce the original problem to a simpler one. We carry out a prospective study of the la…
In this note we construct an infinite-dimensional Lie group structure on the group of vertical bisections of a regular Lie groupoid. We then identify the Lie algebra of this group and discuss regularity properties (in the sense of Milnor) for these Lie groups. If the groupoid is locally trivial, i.e. a gauge groupoid, the vertical bisections coincide with the gauge group of the underlying bundle. Hence the construction recovers the well known Lie group structure of the gauge groups. To establish the Lie theoretic properties of the vertical bisections of a Lie groupoid over a non-compact base, …
We study a few basic properties of Banach-Lie groupoids and algebroids, adapting some classical results on finite dimensional Lie groupoids. As an illustration of the general theory, we show that the notion of locally transitive Banach-Lie groupoid sheds fresh light on earlier research on some infinite-dimensional manifolds associated with Banach algebras.
