For any prime p we consider the density of elements in the multiplicative group of the finite field F_p having order, respectively index, congruent to a(mod d). We compute these densities on average, where the average is taken over all finite fields of prime order. Some connections between the two densities are established. It is also shown how to compute these densities with high numerical accuracy.
For a fixed rational number g different from -1,0,1 and integers a and d the set N_g(a,d) of primes p for which the order of g(mod p) is congruent to a(mod d) is considered. It is shown, assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), that this set has a natural density which can be computed in terms of degrees of certain Kummer extensions and Galois theoretic intersection coefficients. In case d is a power of an odd prime several properties of this density are established.
For a fixed rational number g, not equal to -1,0 or 1 and integers a and d we consider the set of primes p for which the order of g(mod p) is congruent to a(mod d). For d=4 and d=3 it is shown that, under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, these sets have a natural density. Moreover, we explicitly compute this density. For d=4 this generalises earlier work by K. Chinen and L. Murata. The case d=3 was apparently not considered before.
For a fixed rational number g and integers a and d the sets N_g(a,d), respectively R_g(a,d), of primes p for which the order, respectively the index of g(mod p) is congruent to a(mod d), are considered. Under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), it was shown in part II that these sets have a natural density. Here it is shown that these densities can be expressed as linear combinations of certain constants introduced by Pappalardi. Furthermore it is proved that these densities equal their g-averages for almost all g. It is also shown that if such a density does not equal its g-average then…
The multplicative order of an integer g modulo a prime p, with p coprime to g, is defined to be the smallest positive integer k such that g^k is congruent to 1 modulo p. For fixed integers g and d the distribution of this order over residue classes mod d is considered as p runs over the primes. An overview is given of the most significant of my results on this problem obtained (mainly) in the three part series of papers `On the distribution of the order and index of g (modulo p) over residue classes' I-III (appeared in the Journal of Number Theory, also available from the ArXiv).
The period of a curve is the smallest positive degree of Galois-invariant divisor classes. The index is the smallest positive degree of rational divisors. We construct examples of genus one curves with prescribed period and index over certain number fields.
Let K be a complete discretely valued field with perfect residue field k. Assuming upper bounds on the relation between period and index for WC-groups over k, we deduce corresponding upper bounds on the relation between period and index for WC-groups over K. Up to a constant depending only on the dimension of the torsor, we recover theorems of Lichtenbaum and Milne in a "duality free" context. Our techniques include the use of LLR models of torsors under abelian varieties with good reduction and a generalization of the period-index obstruction map to flat cohomology. In an appendix, we conside…
Given a prime power $q$ and a positive integer $n$, let $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$ denote the finite field with $q^n$ elements. Also let $a,b$ be arbitrary members of the ground field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. We investigate the existence of a non-zero element $ξ\in \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$ such that $ξ+ ξ^{-1}$ is primitive and $T(ξ)=a, T(ξ^{-1})=b$, where $T(ξ)$ denotes the trace of $ξ$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. This was a question intended to be addressed by Cao and Wang in 2014. Their work dealt instead with another problem already in the literature. Our solution deals with all values of $n \geq 5$. A related stu…
This is an English translation of Euler's ``Theoremata circa residua ex divisione potestatum relicta'', Novi Commentarii academiae scientiarum Petropolitanae 7 (1761), 49-82. E262 in the Enestrom index. Euler gives many elementary results on power residues modulo a prime number p. He shows that the order of a subgroup generated by an element a in F_p^* must divide the order p-1 of F_p^* (i.e. a special case of Lagrange's theorem for cyclic groups). Euler also gives a proof of Fermat's little theorem, that a^{p-1} = 1 mod p for a relatively prime to p (i.e. not 0 mod p). He remarks that this pr…
We study the first occurrences of gaps between primes in the arithmetic progression (P): $r$, $r+q$, $r+2q$, $r+3q,\ldots,$ where $q$ and $r$ are coprime integers, $q>r\ge1$. The growth trend and distribution of the first-occurrence gap sizes are similar to those of maximal gaps between primes in (P). The histograms of first-occurrence gap sizes, after appropriate rescaling, are well approximated by the Gumbel extreme value distribution. Computations suggest that first-occurrence gaps are much more numerous than maximal gaps: there are $O(\log^2 x)$ first-occurrence gaps between primes in (P) …
Let $Ω$ be an algebraic closure of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ and let $F$ be a finite extension of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ contained in $Ω$. Given positive integers $f$ and $e$, the number of extensions $K/F$ contained in $Ω$ with residue degree $f$ and ramification index $e$ was computed by Krasner. This paper is concerned with the number ${\mathfrak I}(F,f,e)$ of $F$-isomorphism classes of such extensions. We determine ${\mathfrak I}(F,f,e)$ completely when $p^2\nmid e$ and get partial results when $p^2\parallel e$. When $s$ is large, ${\mathfrak I}({\mathbb Q}_p,f,e)$ is equal to the number of isomorphism cla…
Let $C$ be a curve defined over a discrete valuation field of characteristic zero where the residue field has positive characteristic. Assuming that $C$ has good reduction over the residue field, we compute the syntomic regulator on a certain part of $K_4^[(3)}(C)$. The result can be expressed in terms of $p$-adic polylogarithms and Coleman integration. We also compute the syntomic regulator on a certain part of $K_4^[(3)}(F)$ for the function field $F$ of $C$. The result can be expressed in terms of $p$-adic polylogarithms and Coleman integration, or by using a trilinear map ("triple index") …
It is proved that any Rota---Baxter operator of zero weight on Jordan algebra of a nondegenerate bilinear symmetric form is nilpotent of index less or equal three. We state exact value of nilpotency index on simple Jordan algebra of Clifford type over fields $\mathbb{R}$, $\mathbb{C}$, and $\mathbb{Z}_p$. For $\mathbb{Z}_p$, we essentially use the results from number theory concerned quadratic residues and Chevalley---Warning theorem.
Let $F$ be the function field of a curve over a complete discretely valued field. Let $\ell$ be a prime not equal to the characteristic of the residue field. Given a finite subgroup $B$ in the $\ell$ torsion part of the Brauer group ${}_{\ell}Br(F)$, we define the index of $B$ as the minimum of the degrees of field extensions which split all elements in $B$. In this manuscript, we give an upper bound for the index of any finite subgroup $B$ in terms of arithmetic invariants of $F$. As a simple application of our result, given a quadratic form $q/F$, where $F$ is the function field of a curve o…
Let $K$ be a number field and $S$ a fixed finite set of places of $K$ containing all the archimedean ones. Let $R_S$ be the ring of $S$-integers of $K$. In the present paper we study the cycles for rational maps of $\mathbb{P}_1(K)$ of degree $\geq2$ with good reduction outside $S$. We say that two ordered $n$-tuples $(P_0,P_1,...,P_{n-1})$ and $(Q_0,Q_1,...,Q_{n-1})$ of points of $\mathbb{P}_1(K)$ are equivalent if there exists an automorphism $A\in{\rm PGL}_2(R_S)$ such that $P_i=A(Q_i)$ for every index $i\in\{0,1,...,n-1\}$. We prove that if we fix two points $P_0,P_1\in\mathbb{P}_1(K)$, th…
