For a fixed rational number g and integers a and d the sets N_g(a,d), respectively R_g(a,d), of primes p for which the order, respectively the index of g(mod p) is congruent to a(mod d), are considered.
Under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), it was shown in part II that these sets have a natural density. Here it is shown that these densities can be expressed as linear combinations of certain constants introduced by Pappalardi.
Furthermore it is proved that these densities equal their g-averages for almost all g. It is also shown that if such a density does not equal its g-average then it is close to it. Thus these quantities experience a strong `pull' towards the g-average.
We prove new mean value theorems for primes in arithmetic progressions to moduli larger than $x^{1/2}$, extending the Bombieri-Vinogradov theorem to moduli of size $x^{1/2+δ}$ which have conveniently sized divisors. The main feature of these estimates is that they are completely uniform with respect to the residue classes considered, unlike previous works on primes in arithmetic progressions to large moduli.
The graded quotients of the logarithmic ramification groups of a local field of mixed characteristic is killed by the residue characteristic. Its characters are described by differential forms.
The multplicative order of an integer g modulo a prime p, with p coprime to g, is defined to be the smallest positive integer k such that g^k is congruent to 1 modulo p. For fixed integers g and d the distribution of this order over residue classes mod d is considered as p runs over the primes. An overview is given of the most significant of my results on this problem obtained (mainly) in the three part series of papers `On the distribution of the order and index of g (modulo p) over residue classes' I-III (appeared in the Journal of Number Theory, also available from the ArXiv).
We show, for any $q\ge 3$ and distinct reduced residues $a,b \pmod q$, the existence of certain hypothetical sets of zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions lying off the critical line implies that $π(x;q,a)<π(x;q,b)$ for a set of real $x$ of asymptotic density 1.
Improving on some recent results of Matomäki and of Wright, we show that the number of Carmichael numbers to $X$ in a coprime residue class exceeds $X^{1/(6\log\log\log X)}$ for all sufficiently large $X$ depending on the modulus of the residue class.
We investigate the distribution of the function $ω(n)$, the number of distinct prime divisors of $n$, in residue classes modulo $q$ for natural numbers $q$ greater than 2. In particular we ask `prime number races' style questions, as suggested by Coons and Dahmen in their paper `On the residue class distribution of the number of prime divisors of an integer'.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. In this article, we study the number of quadratic residues and non-residues modulo $p$ which are multiples of $2$ or $3$ or $4$ and lying in the interval $[1, p-1]$, by applying the Dirichlet's class number formula for the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$.
Consider the product of (1-p^(-s))^(-4) over all primes p=1 mod 5. We evaluate its residue at s=1 and compare with the corresponding Mertens constant of Languasco & Zaccagnini. We also count primitive quintic Dirichlet characters mod n and determine their average number as n->infty.
Let $C_n$ be the $n$th Catalan number. For any prime $p \geq 5$ we show that the set $\{C_n : n \in \mathbb{N} \}$ contains all residues mod $p$. In addition all residues are attained infinitely often. Any positive integer can be expressed as the product of central binomial coefficients modulo $p$. The directed sub-graph of the automata for $C_n \mod p$ consisting of the constant states and transitions between them has a cycle which visits all vertices.
Let n > 1 be an integer, and let F denote a field of p elements for a prime p = 1 (mod n). By 2015, the question of existence or nonexistence of n-th power residue difference sets in F had been settled for all n < 24. We settle the case n = 24 by proving the nonexistence of 24-th power residue difference sets in F. We also prove the nonexistence of qualified 24-th power residue difference sets in F. The proofs make use of a Mathematica program which computes formulas for the cyclotomic numbers of order 24 in terms of parameters occurring in quadratic partitions of p.
We characterize which residue classes contain infinitely many totients (values of Euler's function) and which do not. We show that the union of all residue classes that are totient-free has asymptotic density 3/4, that is, almost all numbers that are 2 mod 4 are in a residue class that is totient-free. In the other direction, we show the existence of a positive density of odd numbers m, such that for any $s\ge0$ and any even number $a$, the residue class $a\pmod{2^sm}$ contains infinitely many totients.
Under fairly general conditions, we show that families of integer-valued polynomial-like multiplicative functions are uniformly distributed in coprime residue classes mod $p$, where $p$ is a growing prime (or nearly prime) modulus. This can be seen as complementary to work of Narkiewicz, who obtained comprehensive results for fixed moduli.
We consider a problem of P. Erdos, A. M. Odlyzko and A. Sarkozy about the representation of residue classes modulo m by products of two not too large primes. While it seems that even the Extended Riemann Hypothesis is not powerful enough to achieve the expected results, here we obtain some unconditional results ``on average'' over moduli m and residue classes modulo m and somewhat stronger results when the average is restricted to prime moduli m = p. We also consider the analogous question wherein the primes are replaced by easier sequences so, quite naturally, we obtain much stronger results.
Building upon the work of A. Booker and C. Pomerance (2017), we prove that for a prime power $q \geq 7$, every residue class modulo an irreducible polynomial $F \in \mathbb{F}_q[X]$ has a non-constant, square-free representative which has no irreducible factors of degree exceeding $\text{deg}~F -1$. We also give applications to generating sequences of irreducible polynomials.
We study the distribution of spacings between squares modulo q as the number of prime divisors of q tends to infinity. In an earlier paper Kurlberg and Rudnick proved that the spacing distribution for square free q is Poissonian, this paper extends the result to arbitrary q.
For positive integers $q$, Dirichlet's theorem states that there are infinitely many primes in each reduced residue class modulo $q$. A stronger form of the theorem states that the primes are equidistributed among the $φ(q)$ reduced residue classes modulo $q$. This paper considers patterns of sequences of consecutive primes $(p_n, p_{n+1}, \ldots, p_{n+k})$ modulo $q$. Numerical evidence suggests a preference for certain prime patterns. For example, computed frequencies of the pattern $(a,a)$ modulo $q$ up to $x$ are much less than the expected frequency $π(x)/φ(q)^2$. We begin to rigorously c…
We show that for any $\varepsilon > 0$ and a sufficiently large cube-free $q$, any reduced residue class modulo $q$ can be represented as a product of $14$ integers from the interval $[1, q^{1/4e^{1/2} + \varepsilon}]$. The length of the interval is at the lower limit of what is possible before the Burgess bound on the smallest quadratic nonresidue is improved. We also consider several variations of this result and give applications to Fermat quotients.
We prove that the set of Farey fractions of order $T$, that is, the set $\{α/β\in \Q : \gcd(α, β) = 1, 1 \le α, β\le T\}$, is uniformly distributed in residue classes modulo a prime $p$ provided $T \ge p^{1/2 +\eps}$ for any fixed $\eps>0$. We apply this to obtain upper bounds for the Lang--Trotter conjectures on Frobenius traces and Frobenius fields ``on average'' over a one-parametric family of elliptic curves.
Let $f(x)$ be an irreducible polynomial with integer coefficients of degree at least two. Hooley proved that the roots of the congruence equation $f(x)\equiv 0\mod n$ is uniformly distributed. as a parallel of Hooley's theorem under ideal theoretical setting, we prove the uniformity of the distribution of residues of an algebraic number modulo degree one ideals. Then using this result we show that the roots of a system of polynomial congruences are uniformly distributed. Finally, the distribution of digits of n-adic expansions of an algebraic number is discussed.
We show that for any fixed $\eps>0$, there are numbers $δ>0$ and $p_0\ge 2$ with the following property: for every prime $p\ge p_0$ and every integer $N$ such that $p^{1/(4\sqrt{e})+\eps}\le N\le p$, the sequence $1,2,...,N$ contains at least $δN$ quadratic non-residues modulo $p$. We use this result to obtain strong upper bounds on the sizes of the least quadratic non-residues in Beatty and Piatetski--Shapiro sequences.
It has been conjectured by Sarkozy that with finitely many exceptions, the set of quadratic residues modulo a prime $p$ cannot be represented as a sumset $\{a+b\colon a\in A, b\in B\}$ with non-singleton sets $A,B\subset F_p$. The case $A=B$ of this conjecture has been recently established by Shkredov. The analogous problem for differences remains open: is it true that for all sufficiently large primes $p$, the set of quadratic residues modulo $p$ is not of the form $\{a'-a"\colon a',a"\in A,\,a'\ne a"\}$ with $A\subset F_p$? We attack here a presumably more tractable variant of this problem, …
We present improved algorithms for computing the left factorial residues $!p=0!+1!+...+(p-1)! \!\mod p$. We use these algorithms for the calculation of the residues $!p\!\mod p$, for all primes $p$ up to $2^{40}$. Our results confirm that Kurepa's left factorial conjecture is still an open problem, as they show that there are no odd primes $p<2^{40}$ such that $p$ divides $!p$. Additionally, we confirm that there are no socialist primes $p$ with $5<p<2^{40}$.
We generalize and solve the $\roman{mod}\,q$ analogue of a problem of Littlewood and Offord, raised by Vaughan and Wooley, concerning the distribution of the $2^n$ sums of the form $\sum_{i=1}^n\varepsilon_ia_i$, where each $\varepsilon_i$ is $0$ or $1$. For all $q$, $n$, $k$ we determine the maximum, over all reduced residues $a_i$ and all sets $P$ consisting of $k$ arbitrary residues, of the number of these sums that belong to $P$.
Nikolai Durov introduced the theory of generalized rings and schemes to study Arakelov geometry in an alternative algebraic framework, and introduced the residue field at the infinite place. We show an elementary algebraic approach to modules and algebras over this object, define prime congruences, show that the polynomial ring of n variables is of Krull dimension n, and derive a prime decomposition theorem for these primes.
Let $K$ be a complete discretely valued field with mixed characteristic $(0, p)$ and imperfect residue field $k_K$. Let $Δ$ be a finite set. We construct an equivalence of categories between finite dimensional $\Bbb{F}_p$-representations of the product of $Δ$ copies of the absolute Galois group of $K$ and multivariable \' etale $(φ, Γ)$-modules over a multivariable Laurent series ring over $k_K$.
