On a discrete group G a length function may implement a spectral triple on the reduced group C*-algebra. Following A. Connes, the Dirac operator of the triple then can induce a metric on the state space of reduced group C*-algebra. Recent studies by M. Rieffel raise several questions with respect to such a metric on the state space. Here it is proven that for a free non Abelian group, the metric on the state space is bounded. Further we propose a relaxation in the way a length function is used in the construction of a metric, and we show that for groups of rapid decay there are many metrics related to a length function which all have all the expected properties. The boundedness result for free groups is based on an estimate of the completely bounded norm of a certain Schur multiplier and on some techniques concerning free groups due to U. Haagerup. At the end we have included a noncommutative version of the Arzela-Ascoli Theorem.
A generalization of Powers-St$ø$rmer's inequality for operator monotone functions on $[0, +\infty)$ and for positive linear functional on general $C^*$-algebras will be proved. It also will be shown that the generalized Powers-St$ø$rmer inequality characterizes the tracial functionals on $C^*$-algebras.
We extend the noncommutative L1-maximal ergodic inequality for semifinite von Neumann algebras established by Yeadon in 1977 to the framework of noncommutative L1-spaces associated with sigma-finite von Neumann algebras. Since the semifnite case of this result is one of the two essential parts in the proof of noncommutative maximal ergodic inequality for tracial Lp-spaces (1<p<infinity) by Junge-Xu in 2007, we hope our result will be helpful to establish a complete noncommutative maximal ergodic inequality for non-tracial Lp-spaces in the future.
Let $\mathscr{A}$ be a unital $C^*$-algebra and let $Φ: \mathscr{A} \to {\mathbb B}({\mathscr H})$ be a unital $n$-positive linear map between $C^*$-algebras for some $n \geq 3$. We show that $$\|Φ(AB)-Φ(A)Φ(B)\| \leq Δ(A,||\cdot||)\,Δ(B,||\cdot||)$$ for all operators $A, B \in \mathscr{A}$, where $Δ(C,\|\cdot\|)$ denotes the operator norm distance of $C$ from the scalar operators.
For a semi-finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal A$, we study the case of equality in Young's inequality of s-numbers for a pair of $τ$-measurable operators $a,b$, and we prove that equality is only possible if $|a|^p=|b|^q$. We also extend the result to unbounded operators affiliated with $\mathcal A$, and relate this problem with other symmetric norm Young inequalities.
A generalization of classical determinant inequalities like Hadamard's inequality and Fischer's inequality is studied. For a version of the inequalities originally proved by Arveson for positive operators in von Neumann algebras with a tracial state, we give a different proof. We also improve and generalize to the setting of finite von Neumann algebras, some `Fischer-type' inequalities by Matic for determinants of perturbed positive-definite matrices. In the process, a conceptual framework is established for viewing these inequalities as manifestations of Jensen's inequality in conjunction wit…

We obtain a fundamental inequality for a contraction with respect to a $C^*$-algebra valued metric space. As an application of this inequality a simple proof is given for the fixed point theorem in $C^*$-algebra valued metric space.

For certain generating sets of the subfactor pair $M\subset M\rtimes G$ where $G$ is a finite abelian group we prove an approximate inequality between their non-microstates free entropy dimension, resembling the Shreier formula for ranks of finite index subgroups of free groups. As an application, we give bounds on free entropy dimension of generating sets of crossed products of the form $M\rtimes(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{\oplus\infty}$ for a large class of algebras $M$.
Let $p>1$ and $1/p+1/q=1$. Consider Hölder's inequality $$ \|ab^*\|_1\le \|a\|_p\|b\|_q $$ for the $p$-norms of some trace ($a,b$ are matrices, compact operators, elements of a finite $C^*$-algebra or a semi-finite von Neumann algebra). This note contains a simple proof (based on the case $p=2$) of the fact that equality holds iff $|a|^p=λ|b|^q$ for some $λ\ge 0$.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a unital C*-algebra. Then the theory of Hilbert C*-modules tells that \begin{align*} \sum_{i=1}^{n}(a_ia_i^*)^\frac{1}{2}\leq \sqrt{n} \left(\sum_{i=1}^{n}a_ia_i^*\right)^\frac{1}{2}, \quad \forall n \in \mathbb{N}, \forall a_1, \dots, a_n \in \mathcal{A}. \end{align*} By modifications of arguments of Botelho-Andrade, Casazza, Cheng, and Tran given in 2019, for certain tuple $x=(a_1, \dots, a_n) \in \mathcal{A}^n$, we give a method to compute a positive element $c_x$ in the C*-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ such that the equality \begin{align*} \sum_{i=1}^{n}(a_ia_i^*)^\frac{1}{2}=…
We prove a version of Holder's inequality with a constant for p-th roots of symmetric operator spaces of operators affiliated to a semifinite von Neumann algebra factor, and with constant equal to 1 for strongly symmetric operator spaces.

In the spirit of Grothendieck's famous inequality from the theory of Banach spaces, we study a sequence of inequalities for the noncommutative Schwartz space, a Fréchet algebra of smooth operators. These hold in non-optimal form by a simple nuclearity argument. We obtain optimal versions and reformulate the inequalities in several different ways.
We study quantum computation relations on unital finite-dimensional CAR $C^{*}$-algebras. We prove an entropy power inequality (EPI) in a fermionic setting, which presumably will permit understanding the capacities in fermionic linear optics. Similar relations to the bosonic case are shown, and alternative proofs of known facts are given. Clifford algebras and the Grassmann representation can thus be used to obtain mathematical results regarding coherent fermion states.
We establish several operator versions of the classical Aczel inequality. One of operator versions deals with the weighted operator geometric mean and another is related to the positive sesquilinear forms. Some applications including the unital positive linear maps on $C^*$-algebras and the unitarily invariant norms on matrices are presented.
Assuming a unitarily invariant norm $|||\cdot|||$ is given on a two-sided ideal of bounded linear operators acting on a separable Hilbert space, it induces some unitarily invariant norms $|||\cdot|||$ on matrix algebras $\mathcal{M}_n$ for all finite values of $n$ via $|||A|||=|||A\oplus 0|||$. We show that if $\mathscr{A}$ is a $C^*$-algebra of finite dimension $k$ and $Φ: \mathscr{A} \to \mathcal{M}_n$ is a unital completely positive map, then \begin{equation*} |||Φ(AB)-Φ(A)Φ(B)||| \leq \frac{1}{4} |||I_{n}|||\,|||I_{kn}||| d_A d_B \end{equation*} for any $A,B \in \mathscr{A}$, where $d_X$ d…
By a result of Lundquist-Barrett, it follows that the rank of a positive semi-definite matrix is less than or equal to the sum of the ranks of its principal diagonal submatrices when written in block form. In this article, we take a general operator algebraic approach which provides insight as to why the above rank inequality resembles the Hadamard-Fischer determinant inequality in form, with multiplication replaced by addition. It also helps in identifying the necessary and sufficient conditions under which equality holds. Let $\mathscr{R}$ be a von Neumann algebra, and $Φ$ be a normal condit…
As a continuation of the paper [20] on standard $f$-divergences, we make a systematic study of maximal $f$-divergences in general von Neumann algebras. For maximal $f$-divergences, apart from their definition based on Haagerup's $L^1$-space, we present the general integral expression and the variational expression in terms of reverse tests. From these definition and expressions we prove important properties of maximal $f$-divergences, for instance, the monotonicity inequality, the joint convexity, the lower semicontinuity, and the martingale convergence. The inequality between the standard and…
Let $φ$ be a normal state on the algebra $B(H)$ of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space $H$, $f$ a strictly positive, continuous function on $(0, \infty)$, and let $g$ be a function on $(0, \infty)$ defined by $g(t) = \frac{t}{f(t)}$. We will give characterizations of matrix and operator monotonicity by the following generalized Powers-St\ormer inequality: $$ φ(A + B) - φ(|A - B|) \leq 2φ(f(A)^1/2g(B)f(A)^1/2), $$ whenever $A, B$ are positive invertible operators in $B(H).$
In the line of previous work by Naor, we establish new forms of metric $\mathrm{X}_p$ inequalities in group algebras under very general assumptions. Our results' applicability goes beyond the previously known setting in two directions. In first place, we find continuous forms of the $\mathrm{X}_p$ inequality in the $n$-dimensional torus. Second, we consider transferred forms of the sharp scalar valued metric $\mathrm{X}_p$ inequality in the von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{L}(\mathrm{G})$ of a discrete group $\mathrm{G}$. As a byproduct of our results, some metric consequences and their relation …
