Recently Kosaki proved an inequality for matrices that can be seen as a kind of new uncertainty principle. Independently, the same result was proved by Yanagi, Furuichi and Kuriyama. The new bound is given in terms of Wigner-Yanase-Dyson informations. Kosaki himself asked if this inequality can be proved in the setting of von Neumann algebras. In this paper we provide a positive answer to that question and moreover we show how the inequality can be generalized to an arbitrary operator monotone function.
\noindent{In} this paper, we clarify the structure of the Stone spectrum of an arbitrary finite von Neumann algebra $\rr$ of type $\rm{I}_{n}$. The main tool for this investigation is a generalized notion of rank for projections in von Neumann algebras of this type.
This paper is an introduction to the von Neumann entropy in a historic approach. Von Neumann's gedanken experiment is repeated, which led him to the formula of thermodynamic entropy of a statistical operator. In the analysis of his ideas we stress the role of superselection sectors and summarize von Neumann's knowledge about quantum mechanical entropy. The final part of the paper is devoted to important developments discovered long after von Neumann's work. Subadditivity and the interpretation of the von Neumann entropy as channel capacity are among those.
We make a systematic study of standard $f$-divergences in general von Neumann algebras. An important ingredient of our study is to extend Kosaki's variational expression of the relative entropy to an arbitary standard $f$-divergence, from which most of the important properties of standard $f$-divergences follow immediately. In a similar manner we give a comprehensive exposition on the Rényi divergence in von Neumann algebra. Some results on relative hamiltonians formerly studied by Araki and Donald are improved as a by-product.

We study the structure of the generator of a symmetric, conservative quantum dynamical semigroup with norm-bounded generator on a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful semifinite trace. In this article, we prove various smooth uncertainty principles on von Neumann bi-algebras, which unify numbers of uncertainty principles on quantum symmetries, such as subfactors, and fusion bi-algebras etc, studied in quantum Fourier analysis. We also obtain Widgerson-Wigderson type uncertainty principles for von Neumann bi-algebras. Moreover, we give a complete answer to a conjecture proposed by A. Wigderson and Y. Wigderson.
We obtain a number of explicit estimates for quasi-norms of pseudo-differential operators in the Schatten-von Neumann classes $S_q$ with $0<q\le 1$. The estimates are applied to derive semi-classical bounds for operators with smooth or non-smooth symbols.
It is shown that the Novikov inequalities for critical points of closed 1-forms hold with the von Neumann Betti numbers replacing the Novikov numbers. Quantum bialgebras derivable from Uq(sl2) which contain idempotents and von Neumann regular Cartan-like generators are introduced and investigated. Various types of antipodes (invertible and von Neumann regular) on these bialgebras are constructed, which leads to a Hopf algebra structure and a von Neumann-Hopf algebra structure, respectively. We present a simplified proof of the von Neumann's Quantum Ergodic Theorem. This important result was initially published in german by J. von Neumann in 1929. We are interested here in the time evolution $ψ_t$, $t\geq 0$, (for large times) under the Schrodinger equation associated to a given fixed Hamiltonian $H : \mathcal{H} \to \mathcal{H}$ and a general initial condition $ψ_0$. The dimension of the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is finite.
