In this version, the hessian of the zeta function is computed for the Bochner as well as the de Rham Laplacian, and the notation in the proof is changed
Let M be a compact closed n-dimensional manifold. Given a Riemannian metric on M, we consider the zeta function Z(s) for the de Rham Laplacian and the Bochner Laplacian on p-forms. The hessian of Z(s) with respect to variations of the metric is given by a pseudodifferential operator T(s). When the real part of s is less than n/2-1, we compute the principal symbol of T(s). This can be used to determine whether the general critical metric for Z(s) or one of its s derivatives has finite index, or whether it is an essential saddle point.
Let M be a compact manifold without boundary. Associated to a metric g on M there are various Laplace operators, for example the de Rham Laplacian on forms and the conformal Laplacian on functions. For a general Laplace type operator we consider its spectral zeta function Z(s). For a fixed value of s we calculate the hessian of Z(s) with respect to the metric and show that it is given by a pseudodifferential operator T(s)=U(s)+V(s) where U(s) is polyhomogeneous of degree n-2s and V(s) is polyhomogeneous of degree 2. The operators U(s) and V(s) are meromorphic in s. The symbol expansion of U(s)…
We prove that the zeta-function $ζ_Δ$ of the Laplacian $Δ$ on a self-similar fractals with spectral decimation admits a meromorphic continuation to the whole complex plane. We characterise the poles, compute their residues, and give expressions for some special values of the zeta-function. Furthermore, we discuss the presence of oscillations in the eigenvalue counting function.
we discuss the decomposition of the zeta-determinant of the square of the Dirac operator into the contributions coming from the different parts of the manifold in the case of an invertible tangential operator.
Given two unitary involutions $σ_{1}$ and $σ_{2}$ satisfying $G σ_{i} = - σ_{i} G$ on $ker B$ on a compact manifold with cylindrical end, M. Lesch, K. Wojciechowski ([LW]) and W. Müller ([M]) established the formula describing the difference of two eta-invariants with the APS boundary conditions associated with $σ_{1}$ and $σ_{2}$. In this paper we establish the analogous formula for the zeta-determinants of Dirac Laplacians. For the proof of the result we use the Burghelea-Friedlander-Kappeler's gluing formula for zeta-determinants and the scattering theory developed by W. Müller in [M]. This…
We introduce a zeta function of digraphs that determines, and is determined by, the spectra of all linear combinations of the adjacency matrix, its transpose, the out-degree matrix, and the in-degree matrix. In particular, zeta-equivalence of graphs encompasses simultaneous cospectrality with respect to the adjacency, the Laplacian, the signless Laplacian, and the normalized Laplacian matrix, respectively. In addition, we express zeta-equivalence in terms of Markov chains and in terms of invasions where each edge is replaced by a fixed digraph. We finish with a method for constructing zeta-equ…
We prove the uniqueness of a translation invariant extension to non integer order classical symbols of the ordinary discrete sum on $L^1$-symbols, which we then describe using an Hadamard finite part procedure for sums over integer points of infinite unions of nested convex polytopes in $\R^d$. This canonical regularised sum is the building block to construct meromorphic extensions of the ordinary sum on holomorphic symbols. Explicit formulae for the complex residues at their poles are given in terms of noncommutative residues of classical symbols, thus extending results of Guillemin, Sternber…
Let X be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension two or three and let P be a point of X. We derive comparison formulas relating the zeta-regularized determinant of an arbitrary self-adjoint extension of (symmetric) Laplace operator with domain, consisting of smooth functions with compact supports which does not contain P, to the zeta-regularized determinant of the self-adjoint Laplacian on X.
In this paper we consider the Witten Laplacian on 0-forms and give sufficient conditions under which the Witten Laplacian admits a compact resolvent. These conditions are imposed on the potential itself, involving the control of high order derivatives by lower ones, as well as the control of the positive eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix. This compactness criterion for resolvent is inspired by the one for the Fokker-Planck operator. Our method relies on the nilpotent group techniques developed by Helffer-Nourrigat [Hypoellipticité maximale pour des opérateurs polynômes de champs de vecteurs, 1…
We obtain formulas for the spectral zeta function of the Laplacian on symmetric finitely ramified fractals, such as the Sierpinski gasket, and a fractal Laplacian on the interval. These formulas contain a new type of zeta function associated with a polynomial (rational functions also can appear in this context). It is proved that this zeta function has a meromorphic continuation to a half plain with poles contained in an arithmetic progression. It is shown as an example that the Riemann zeta function is the zeta functions of a quadratic polynomial, which is associated with the Laplacian on an …
We consider the combinatorial Laplacian on a sequence of discrete tori which approximate the m-dimensional torus. In the special case m=1, Friedli and Karlsson derived an asymptotic expansion of the corresponding spectral zeta function in the critical strip, as the approximation parameter goes to infinity. There, the authors have also formulated a conjecture on this asymptotics, that is equivalent to the Riemann conjecture. In this paper, inspired by the work of Friedli and Karlsson, we prove that a similar asymptotic expansion holds for m=2. Similar argument applies to higher dimensions as we…
We consider families of degenerating hyperbolic surfaces. The surfaces are geometrically finite of fixed topological type. Let Z(s) be the Selberg Zeta function of a surface, and let Z_d(s) be the contribution of the pinched geodesics to the Zeta function. Extending a result of Hejhal and Wolpert, we prove that the quotient of these two terms converges to the Zeta function of the limit surface for all arguments s with re(s)>1/2. The technique is an examination of resolvent of the Laplacian, which is composed from that for elementary surfaces via meromorphic Fredholm theory. The resolvent is sh…
The goal of this paper is to compute the zeta function determinant for the massive Laplacian on Riemann caps (or spherical suspensions). These manifolds are defined as compact and boundaryless $D-$dimensional manifolds deformed by a singular Riemannian structure. The deformed spheres, considered previously in the literature, belong to this class. After presenting the geometry and discussing the spectrum of the Laplacian, we illustrate a method to compute its zeta regularized determinant. The special case of the deformed sphere is recovered as a limit of our general formulas.
The connection zeta function of a finite abstract simplicial complex G is defined as zeta_L(s)=sum_x 1/lambda_x^s, where lambda_x are the eigenvalues of the connection Laplacian L defined by L(x,y)=1 if x and y intersect and 0 else. (I) As a consequence of the spectral formula chi(G)=sum_x (-1)^dim(x) = p(G)-n(G), where p(G) is the number of positive eigenvalues and n(G) is the number of negative eigenvalues of L, both the Euler characteristic chi(G)=zeta(0)-2 i zeta'(0)/pi as well as determinant det(L)=e^zeta'(0)/pi can be written in terms of zeta. (II) As a consequence of the generalized Cau…
We find an explicit expression for the zeta-regularized determinant of (the Friedrichs extension) of the Laplacian on a compact Riemann surface of genus one with conformal metric of curvature $1$ having a single conical singularity of angle $4π$.
We construct a determinant of the Laplacian for infinite-area surfaces which are hyperbolic near infinity and without cusps. In the case of a convex co-compact hyperbolic metric, the determinant can be related to the Selberg zeta function and thus shown to be an entire function of order two with zeros at the eigenvalues and resonances of the Laplacian. In the hyperbolic near infinity case the determinant is analyzed through the zeta-regularized relative determinant for a conformal metric perturbation. We establish that this relative determinant is a ratio of entire functions of order two with …
We study the entire function zeta(n,s) which is the sum of l to the power -s, where l runs over the positive eigenvalues of the Laplacian of the circular graph C(n) with n vertices. We prove that the roots of zeta(n,s) converge for n to infinity to the line Re(s)=1/2 in the sense that for every compact subset K in the complement of this line, and large enough n, no root of the zeta function zeta(n,s) is in K. To prove this, we look at the Dirac zeta function, which uses the positive eigenvalues of the Dirac operator D=d+d^* of the circular graph, the square root of the Laplacian. We extend a N…
For cofinite Kleinian groups (or equivalently, finite-volume three-dimensional hyperbolic orbifolds) with finite-dimensional unitary representations, we evaluate the regularized determinant of the Laplacian using W. Muller's regularization. We give an explicit formula relating the determinant to the Selberg zeta-function.
We numerically compute the lowest Laplacian eigenvalues of several two-dimensional shapes with dihedral symmetry at arbitrary precision arithmetic. Our approach is based on the method of particular solutions with domain decomposition. We are particularly interested in asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues $λ(n)$ of shapes with $n$ edges that are of the form $λ(n) \sim x\sum_{k=0}^{\infty} \frac{C_k(x)}{n^k}$ where $x$ is the limiting eigenvalue for $n\rightarrow \infty$. Expansions of this form have previously only been known for regular polygons with Dirichlet boundary condition and (quite…
For hyperbolic Riemann surfaces of finite geometry, we study Selberg's zeta function and its relation to the relative scattering phase and the resonances of the Laplacian. As an application we show that the conjugacy class of a finitely generated, torsion-free, discrete subgroup of SL(2,R) is determined by its trace spectrum up to finitely many possibilities, thus generalizing results of McKean and Mueller to groups which are not necessarily cofinite.
We give an integral representaion of the zeta-reguralized determinant of Laplacians on three dimensional Heisenberg manifolds, and study a behaivior of the values when we deform the uniform discrete subgroups. Heiseberg manifolds are the total space of a fiber bundle with a torus as the base space and a circle as a typical fiber, then the deformation of the uniform discrete subgroups means that the "radius" of the fiber goes to zero. We explain the lines of the calculations precisely for three dimensional cases and state the corresponding results for five dimensional Heisenberg manifolds. We s…
We study the spectral zeta functions of the Laplacian on fractal sets which are locally self-similar fractafolds, in the sense of Strichartz. These functions are known to meromorphically extend to the entire complex plane, and the locations of their poles, sometimes referred to as complex dimensions, are of special interest. We give examples of self-similar sets such that their complex dimensions are not on the imaginary axis, which allows us to interpret their Laplacian determinant as the regularized product of their eigenvalues. We then investigate a connection between the logarithm of the d…
We investigate the existence of the meromorphic extension of the spectral zeta function of the Laplacian on self-similar fractals using the classical results of Kigami and Lapidus (based on the renewal theory) and new results of Hambly and Kajino based on the heat kernel estimates and other probabilistic techniques. We also formulate conjectures which hold true in the examples that have been analyzed in the existing literature.
We study extremal properties of the determinant of the Laplacian in the Bergman metric on the moduli space of compact genus two Riemann surfaces. By a combination of analytical and numerical methods we identify four non-degenerate critical points of this function and compute the signature of the Hessian at these points. The curve with the maximal number of automorphisms (the Burnside curve) turns out to be the point of the absolute maximum. Our results agree with the mass formula for orbifold Euler characteristics of the moduli space. A similar analysis is performed for the Bolza's strata of s…
In this paper we study spectral zeta functions associated to finite and infinite graphs. First we establish a meromorphic continuation of these functions under some general conditions. Then we study special values in the case of standard lattice graphs associated to free abelian groups. In particular we connect it to Catalan numbers in several ways, and obtain some non-trivial special values and functional symmetries. Furthermore we relate the values at the negative integers with the more studied Ihara zeta functions, and prove a few minor results that seem not to have been recorded before. Fi…
We study the eta invariants of Dirac operators and the regularized determinants of Dirac Laplacians over hyperbolic manifolds with cusps. We follow Werner M"uller and use relative traces to define these spectral invariants. We show the regularity of eta and zeta functions at s=0. The Selberg trace formula and the detailed analysis of the unipotent terms give the relation between the eta invariant and the Selberg zeta function of odd type. This allows us to show the vanishing of the unipotent contribution. We show that the eta invariant and the Selberg zeta function of odd type satisfy certain …
We continue the study of a special entry in the AdS/CFT dictionary, namely a holographic formula relating the functional determinant of the scattering operator in an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter (ALAdS) space to a relative functional determinant of the scalar Laplacian in the bulk. A heuristic derivation of the formula involves a one-loop quantum effect in the bulk and the corresponding sub-leading correction at large N on the boundary. We presently explore a higher-dimensional version of the spinning BTZ black hole obtained as a quotient of hyperbolic space by a discrete subgroup of …
For a class of even dimensional conformally compact manifolds (X,g), we define a generalized Krein spectral function by applying a renormalized trace functional to the spectral measure of the Laplacian. We then show that this is the phase of the Kontsevich-Vishik determinant det S(s) of the scattering operator S(s) of (the Laplacian of) g and we analyze the divisors of det(S(s)). As an application for convex co-compact hyperbolic quotients, we obtain a functional equation for Selberg's Zeta function Z(s), we express the determinant of the GJMS conformal Laplacians of the conformal infinity of …
A cuspidal end is a type of metric singularity, described as a product $S^1 \times \left] a, +\infty \right[$ with the Poincaré metric. The underlying set can also be seen as $\mathbb{R} \times \left] a, +\infty \right[$ subject to the action of the translation $T : \left( x,y \right) \longrightarrow \left( x+1, y \right)$. On it, one may consider a holomorphic line bundle $L$, coming from a unitary character of the group generated by $T$. The complex modulus induces a flat metric on $L$, and a pseudo-Laplacian $Δ_{L,0}$ acting on functions can be associated to the Chern connection. One needs …
Let $Γ_{w}$ be a non-cofinite Hecke triangle group with cusp width $w>2$ and let $\varrho\colonΓ_w\to U(V)$ be a finite-dimensional unitary representation of $Γ_w$. In this note we announce a new fractal upper bound for the Selberg zeta function of $Γ_{w}$ twisted by $\varrho$. In strips parallel to the imaginary axis and bounded away from the real axis, the Selberg zeta function is bounded by $\exp\left( C_{\varepsilon} \vert s\vert^{δ+ \varepsilon} \right)$, where $δ= δ_{w}$ denotes the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of $Γ_{w}$. This bound implies fractal Weyl bounds on the resonances …
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact smoothly stratified pseudomanifold with an iterated cone-edge metric satisfying a spectral Witt condition. Under these assumptions the Hodge-Laplacian $Δ$ is essentially self-adjoint. We establish the asymptotic expansion for the resolvent trace of $Δ$. Our method proceeds by induction on the depth and applies in principle to a larger class of second-order differential operators of regular-singular type, e.g., Dirac Laplacians. Our arguments are functional analytic, do not rely on microlocal techniques and are very explicit. The results of this paper provide a basis fo…
We consider the family of Hecke triangle groups $ Γ_{w} = \langle S, T_w\rangle $ generated by the Möbius transformations $ S : z\mapsto -1/z $ and $ T_{w} : z \mapsto z+w $ with $ w > 2.$ In this case the corresponding hyperbolic quotient $ Γ_{w}\backslash\mathbb{H}^2 $ is an infinite-area orbifold. Moreover, the limit set of $ Γ_w $ is a Cantor-like fractal whose Hausdorff dimension we denote by $ δ(w). $ The first result of this paper asserts that the twisted Selberg zeta function $ Z_{Γ_{ w}}(s, ρ) $, where $ ρ: Γ_{w} \to \mathrm{U}(V) $ is an arbitrary finite-dimensional unitary represent…
