Let M be a compact manifold without boundary. Associated to a metric g on M there are various Laplace operators, for example the de Rham Laplacian on forms and the conformal Laplacian on functions. For a general Laplace type operator we consider its spectral zeta function Z(s). For a fixed value of s we calculate the hessian of Z(s) with respect to the metric and show that it is given by a pseudodifferential operator T(s)=U(s)+V(s) where U(s) is polyhomogeneous of degree n-2s and V(s) is polyhomogeneous of degree 2. The operators U(s) and V(s) are meromorphic in s. The symbol expansion of U(s) is computable from the symbol of the Laplacian and we give an explicit formula for the principal symbol. Our analysis extends to describe the hessian of the kth order derivative of Z(s) with respect to s, in particular to the hessian of Z'(0).
Let M be a compact closed n-dimensional manifold. Given a Riemannian metric on M, we consider the zeta function Z(s) for the de Rham Laplacian and the Bochner Laplacian on p-forms. The hessian of Z(s) with respect to variations of the metric is given by a pseudodifferential operator T(s). When the real part of s is less than n/2-1, we compute the principal symbol of T(s). This can be used to determine whether the general critical metric for Z(s) or one of its s derivatives has finite index, or whether it is an essential saddle point.
We use the asymptotic expansion of the heat trace to express all residues of spectral zeta functions as regularized sums over the spectrum. The method extends to those spectral zeta functions that are localized by a bounded operator.
We obtain formulas for the spectral zeta function of the Laplacian on symmetric finitely ramified fractals, such as the Sierpinski gasket, and a fractal Laplacian on the interval. These formulas contain a new type of zeta function associated with a polynomial (rational functions also can appear in this context). It is proved that this zeta function has a meromorphic continuation to a half plain with poles contained in an arithmetic progression. It is shown as an example that the Riemann zeta function is the zeta functions of a quadratic polynomial, which is associated with the Laplacian on an …
In this paper we study the spectral asymmetry of (possibly nonselfadjoint) elliptic PsiDO's in terms of the difference of zeta functions coming from different cuttings. Refining previous formulas of Wodzicki in the case of odd class elliptic PsiDO's, our main results have several consequence concerning the local independence with respect to the cutting, the regularity at integer points of eta functions and a geometric expression for the spectral asymmetry of Dirac operators which, in particular, yields a new spectral interpretation of the Einstein-Hilbert action in gravity.
For hyperbolic Riemann surfaces of finite geometry, we study Selberg's zeta function and its relation to the relative scattering phase and the resonances of the Laplacian. As an application we show that the conjugacy class of a finitely generated, torsion-free, discrete subgroup of SL(2,R) is determined by its trace spectrum up to finitely many possibilities, thus generalizing results of McKean and Mueller to groups which are not necessarily cofinite.
The principal aim in this paper is to employ a recently developed unified approach to the computation of traces of resolvents and $ζ$-functions to efficiently compute values of spectral $ζ$-functions at positive integers associated to regular (three-coefficient) self-adjoint Sturm--Liouville differential expressions $τ$. Depending on the underlying boundary conditions, we express the $ζ$-function values in terms of a fundamental system of solutions of $τy = z y$ and their expansions about the spectral point $z=0$. Furthermore, we give the full analytic continuation of the $ζ$-function through …
We investigate the existence of the meromorphic extension of the spectral zeta function of the Laplacian on self-similar fractals using the classical results of Kigami and Lapidus (based on the renewal theory) and new results of Hambly and Kajino based on the heat kernel estimates and other probabilistic techniques. We also formulate conjectures which hold true in the examples that have been analyzed in the existing literature.
We consider the combinatorial Laplacian on a sequence of discrete tori which approximate the m-dimensional torus. In the special case m=1, Friedli and Karlsson derived an asymptotic expansion of the corresponding spectral zeta function in the critical strip, as the approximation parameter goes to infinity. There, the authors have also formulated a conjecture on this asymptotics, that is equivalent to the Riemann conjecture. In this paper, inspired by the work of Friedli and Karlsson, we prove that a similar asymptotic expansion holds for m=2. Similar argument applies to higher dimensions as we…
We study elements of the spectral theory of compact hyperbolic orbifolds $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}^{n}$. We establish a version of the Selberg trace formula for non-unitary representations of $Γ$ and prove that the associated Selberg zeta function admits a meromorphic continuation to $\mathbb{C}$.
Given a holomorphic iterated function scheme with a finite symmetry group $G$, we show that the associated dynamical zeta function factorizes into symmetry-reduced analytic zeta functions that are parametrized by the unitary irreducible representations of $G$. We show that this factorization implies a factorization of the Selberg zeta function on symmetric $n$-funneled surfaces and that the symmetry factorization simplifies the numerical calculations of the resonances by several orders of magnitude. As an application this allows us to provide a detailed study of the spectral gap and we observe…
We prove that the zeta-function $ζ_Δ$ of the Laplacian $Δ$ on a self-similar fractals with spectral decimation admits a meromorphic continuation to the whole complex plane. We characterise the poles, compute their residues, and give expressions for some special values of the zeta-function. Furthermore, we discuss the presence of oscillations in the eigenvalue counting function.
We consider Sturm-Liouville operators on a half line $[a,\infty), a>0$, with potentials that are growing at most quadratically at infinity. Such operators arise naturally in the analysis of hyperbolic manifolds, or more generally manifolds with cusps. We establish existence and a formula for the associated zeta-determinant in terms of the Wronski-determinant of a fundamental system of solutions adapted to the boundary conditions. Despite being the natural objects in the context of hyperbolic geometry, spectral geometry of such operators has only recently been studied in the context of analytic…
The theory of 'zeta functions of fractal strings' has been initiated by the first author in the early 1990s, and developed jointly with his collaborators during almost two decades of intensive research in numerous articles and several monographs. In 2009, the same author introduced a new class of zeta functions, called `distance zeta functions', which since then, has enabled us to extend the existing theory of zeta functions of fractal strings and sprays to arbitrary bounded (fractal) sets in Euclidean spaces of any dimension. A natural and closely related tool for the study of distance zeta f…
We study Selberg zeta functions $Z(s,σ)$ associated to locally homogeneous vector bundles over the unit-sphere bundle of a complete odd-dimensional hyperbolic manifold of finite volume. We assume a certain condition on the fundamental group of the manifold. A priori, the Selberg zeta functions are defined only for s in some right half-space of $\mathbb{C}$. We will prove that for any locally homogeneous bundle the functions $Z(s,σ)$ have a meromorphic continuation to $\mathbb{C}$ and we will give a complete description of their singularities in terms of spectral data of the underlying manifold…
In this paper we study spectral zeta functions associated to finite and infinite graphs. First we establish a meromorphic continuation of these functions under some general conditions. Then we study special values in the case of standard lattice graphs associated to free abelian groups. In particular we connect it to Catalan numbers in several ways, and obtain some non-trivial special values and functional symmetries. Furthermore we relate the values at the negative integers with the more studied Ihara zeta functions, and prove a few minor results that seem not to have been recorded before. Fi…
