A unified theory of quantum symmetric pairs is applied to q-special functions. Previous work characterized certain left coideal subalgebras in the quantized enveloping algebra and established an appropriate framework for quantum zonal spherical functions. Here a distinguished family of such functions, invariant under the Weyl group associated to the restricted roots, is shown to be a family of Macdonald polynomials, as conjectured by Koornwinder and Macdonald. Our results place earlier work for Lie algebras of classical type in a general context and extend to the exceptional cases.
Quantum analogues of the homogeneous spaces $\GL(n)/\SO(n)$ and $\GL(2n)/\Sp(2n)$ are introduced. The zonal spherical functions on these quantum homogeneous spaces are represented by Macdonald's symmetric polynomials $P_{\ld}=P_{\ld}(x_1,\cdots,x_n;q,t)$ with $t=q^{1 \over 2}$ or $t=q^2$.
We show how a certain limit of the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials appears in the representation theory of semisimple groups over p--adic fields as matrix coefficients for the unramified principal series representations. The result is the nonsymmetric counterpart of a classical result relating the same limit of the symmetric Macdonald polynomials to zonal spherical functions on groups of p--adic type.
We study the quantum symmetric spaces for quantum general linear groups modulo symplectic groups. We first determine the structure of the quotient quantum group and completely determine the quantum invariants. We then derive the characteristic property for quantum Phaffian as well as its role in the quantum invariant sub-ring. The spherical functions, viewed as Macdonald polynomials, are also studied as the quantum analog of zonal spherical polynomials.
We study the space of biinvariants and zonal spherical functions associated to quantum symmetric pairs in the maximally split case. Under the obvious restriction map, the space of biinvariants is proved isomorphic to the Weyl group invariants of the character group ring associated to the restricted roots. As a consequence, there is either a unique set, or an (almost) unique two-parameter set of Weyl group invariant quantum zonal spherical functions associated to an irreducible symmetric pair. Included is a complete and explicit list of the generators and relations for the left coideal subalgeb…
Generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials (Macdonald spherical functions) and generalized Kostka-Foulkes polynomials ($q$-weight multiplicities) arise in many places in combinatorics, representation theory, geometry, and mathematical physics. This paper attempts to organize the different definitions of these objects and prove the fundamental combinatorial results from ``scratch'', in a presentation which, hopefully, will be accessible and useful for both the nonexpert and researchers currently working in this very active field. The combinatorics of the affine Hecke algebra plays a central role. …
Integral of a certain multivalued form over cycle $\pmbΔ$ provides zonal spherical function of type $A_n$. This paper is devoted to quantum group analysis and verification of monodromy properties of the distinguished cycle $\pmbΔ$. Zonal spherical function is a particular conformal block of $WA_n$-algebra.
We give a new representation-theoretic proof of the branching rule for Macdonald polynomials using the Etingof-Kirillov Jr. expression for Macdonald polynomials as traces of intertwiners of U_q(gl_n). In the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis, we show that diagonal matrix elements of such intertwiners are given by application of Macdonald's operators to a simple kernel. An essential ingredient in the proof is a map between spherical parts of double affine Hecke algebras of different ranks based upon the Dunkl-Kasatani conjecture.
The spaces of invariants and the zonal spherical functions associated with quantum super 2-shpheres defined by $\Bbb{C}_{q}(osp(1,2))$ are discussed. Connection between the zonal spherical functions and orthogonal $q$-polynomials from the Askey-Wilson scheme is investigated.
We establish a previously conjectured connection between $p$-adics and quantum groups. We find in Sklyanin's two parameter elliptic quantum algebra and its generalizations, the conceptual basis for the Macdonald polynomials, which ``interpolate'' between the zonal spherical functions of related real and $p$\--adic symmetric spaces. The elliptic quantum algebras underlie the $Z_n$\--Baxter models. We show that in the $n \air \infty$ limit, the Jost function for the scattering of {\em first} level excitations in the $Z_n$\--Baxter model coincides with the Harish\--Chandra\--like $c$\--function c…
We introduce the (global) q-Whittaker function as the limit at t=0 of the q,t-spherical function extending the symmetric Macdonald polynomials to arbitrary eigenvalues. The construction heavily depends on the technique of the q-Gaussians developed by the author (and Stokman in the non-reduced case). In this approach, the q-Whittaker function is given by a series convergent everywhere, a kind of generating function for multi-dimensional q-Hermite polynomials (closely related to the level 1 Demazure characters). One of the applications is a q-version of the Shintani- Casselman- Shalika formula, …
The two papers in this series analyze quantum invariant differential operators for quantum symmetric spaces in the maximally split case. In this paper, we complete the proof of a quantum version of Harish-Chandra's theorem: There is a Harish-Chandra map which induces an isomorphism between the ring of quantum invariant differential operators and a ring of Laurent polynomial invariants with respect to the dotted action of the restricted Weyl group. We find a particularly nice basis for the quantum invariant differential operators that provides a new interpretation of difference operators associ…
We study the $q$-analogue of the Haldane-Shastry model, a partially isotropic (XXZ-like) long-range spin chain that enjoys quantum-affine (really: quantum-loop) symmetries at finite size. We derive the pairwise form of the Hamiltonian, found by one of us building on work of Uglov, via 'freezing' from the affine Hecke algebra. We obtain explicit expressions for the spin-analogue of Macdonald operators. Through freezing these yield the higher Hamiltonians of the spin chain, including a Hamiltonian of the opposite chirality. The sum of the two chiral Hamiltonians has a real spectrum also for $q$ …
We show that the Hall algebra of the category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic curve (or, equivalently, the algebra of unramified automorphic forms for GL(n) for all n) is equal to the stable limit of spherical double affine Hecke algebras for GL(k) as k goes to infinity. The two parameters correspond to the size of the finite field and the modulus of the elliptc curve. Under this isomorphism the Hecke operators are mapped to the Macdonald operators. This allows us to give a geometric construction of Macdonald polynomials (eigenvectors for the Macdonald operator) in terms of a suitable speci…
We present a general survey of some recent developments regarding the construction of compact quantum symmetric spaces and the analysis of their zonal spherical functions in terms of $q$-orthogonal polynomials. In particular, we define a one-parameter family of two-sided coideals in $\Uq(\gog\gol(n,\CC))$ and express the zonal spherical functions on the corresponding quantum projective spaces as Askey-Wilson polynomials containing two continuous and one discrete parameter.
Cherednik's quantum affine Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations associated to an affine Hecke algebra module M form a holonomic system of q-difference equations acting on M-valued functions on a complex torus T. In this paper the quantum affine Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations are related to the Cherednik-Macdonald theory when M is induced from a character of a standard parabolic subalgebra of the affine Hecke algebra. We set up correspondences between solutions of the quantum affine KZ equations and, on the one hand, solutions to the spectral problem of the Cherednik-Dunkl q-difference reflection…
We consider a system of three commuting difference operators in three variables $x_{12},x_{13},x_{23}$ with two generic complex parameters $q,t$. This system and its eigenfunctions generalize the trigonometric $A_1$ Ruijsenaars-Schneider model and $A_1$ Macdonald polynomials, respectively. The principal object of study in this paper is the algebra generated by these difference operators together with operators of multiplication by $x_{ij} + x_{ij}^{-1}$. We represent the Dehn twists by outer automorphisms of this algebra and prove that these automorphisms satisfy all relations of the mapping c…
We derive explicit dimension formulas for irreducible $M_F$-spherical $K_F$-representations where $K_F$ is the maximal compact subgroup of the general linear group $GL(d,F)$ over a local field $F$ and $M_F$ is a closed subgroup of $K_F$ such that $K_F/M_F$ realizes the Grassmannian of $n$-dimensional $F$-subspaces of $F^d$. We explore the fact that $(K_F,M_F)$ is a Gelfand pair whose associated zonal spherical functions identify with various degenerations of the multivariable little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. As a result, we are led to consider generalized dimensions defined in terms of evaluatio…
A systematic study of the representation theory of double affine Hecke algebras and related harmonic analysis is started in this paper. Continuing the previous papers we use the technique of intertwining operators to create Macdonald polynomials, estimate their denominators, generalize the classical representations of p-adic affine Hecke algebras in the spaces of functions on affine Weyl groups, and to find out when induced representations are irreducible and co-spherical. The connection with recent results by Sahi and Knop on the integrality of the Macdonald polynomials is established.
We define cylindric generalisations of skew Macdonald functions when one of their parameters is set to zero. We define these functions as weighted sums over cylindric skew tableaux: fixing two integers n>2 and k>0 we shift an ordinary skew diagram of two partitions, viewed as a subset of the two-dimensional integer lattice, by the period vector (n,-k). Imposing a periodicity condition one defines cylindric skew tableaux as a map from the periodically continued skew diagram into the integers. The resulting cylindric Macdonald functions appear in the coproduct of a commutative Frobenius algebra,…
This paper is a continuation of a previous paper in which the first two authors have introduced the spherical Hecke algebra and the Satake isomorphism for an untwisted affine Kac-Moody group over a non-archimedian local field. In this paper we develop the theory of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra associated to these same groups. The resulting algebra is shown to be closely related to Cherednik's double affine Hecke algebra. Furthermore, using these results, we give an explicit description of the affine Satake isomorphism, generalizing Macdonald's formula for the spherical function in the finite-dime…
This paper is based on the lectures given by the first author at Harvard in February and March, 2009. It begins with an introduction to the classical p-adic theory of the Macdonald, Matsumoto and Whittaker functions. Its major directions are as follows: 1) extending the theory of DAHA to arbitrary levels; 2) the affine Satake isomorphism and Hall functions via DAHA; 3) the spinor Dunkl operators for the Q-Toda equation; 4) applications to the nil-DAHA and q-Whittaker functions; 5) the technique of spinors in the differential theory and its applications to the AKZ-QMBP isomorphism theorem.
We define a one-parameter family of two-sided coideals in U_q(gl(n)) and study the corresponding algebras of infinitesimally right invariant functions on the quantum unitary group U_q(n). The Plancherel decomposition of these algebras with respect to the natural transitive U_q(n)-action is shown to be the same as in the case of a complex projective space. By computing the radial part of a suitable Casimir operator, we identify the zonal spherical functions (i.e. infinitesimally bi-invariant matrix coefficients of finite-dimensional irreducible representations) as Askey-Wilson polynomials conta…
A class of quantum analogues of compact symmetric spaces of classical type is introduced by means of constant solutions to the reflection equations. Their zonal spherical functions are discussed in connection with $q$-orthogonal polynomials.
The generic Hecke algebra for the hyperoctahedral group, i.e. the Weyl group of type B, contains the generic Hecke algebra for the symmetric group, i.e. the Weyl group of type A, as a subalgebra. Inducing the index representation of the subalgebra gives a Hecke algebra module, which splits multiplicity free. The corresponding zonal spherical functions are calculated in terms of q-Krawtchouk polynomials. The result covers a number of previously established interpretations of (q-)Krawtchouk polynomials on the hyperoctahedral group, finite groups of Lie type, hypergroups and the quantum SU(2) gro…
Let F be a local field. The action of GL(n,F) on the Grassmann variety Gr(m,n,F) induces a continuous representation of the maximal compact subgroup of GL(n,F) on the space of L^2-functions on Gr(m,n,F). The irreducible constituents of this representation are parameterized by the same underlying set both for Archimedean and non-Archimedean fields. This paper connects the Archimedean and non-Archimedean theories using the quantum Grassmannian. In particular, idempotents in the Hecke algebra associated to this representation are the image of the quantum zonal spherical functions after taking app…
Let R and S be two irreducible root systems spanning the same vector space and having the same Weyl group W, such that S (but not necessarily R) is reduced. For each such pair (R,S) we construct a family of W-invariant orthogonal polynomials in several variables, whose coefficients are rational functions of parameters $q,t_1,t_2,...,t_r$, where r (=1,2 or 3) is the number of W-orbits in R. For particular values of these parameters, these polynomials give the values of zonal spherical functions on real and p-adic symmetric spaces. Also when R=S is of type $A_n$, they conincide with the symmetri…
We present a one-parameter family of constant solutions of the reflection equation and define a family of quantum complex Grassmannians endowed with a transitive action of the quantum unitary group. By computing the radial part of a suitable Casimir operator, we identify the zonal spherical functions (i.e. infinitesimally bi-invariant matrix coefficients of finite-dimensional irreducible representations) as multivariable Askey-Wilson polynomials containing two continuous and two discrete parameters.
