In this article, we discuss a (2+1)-dimensional topological quantum field theory, for short TQFT, with a Verlinde basis. As a conclusion of this general theory, we have a Dehn surgery formula. We show that Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu TQFT has a Verlinde basis. Several applications of this theorem are exposed. Based on Izumi's data of subfactors, we list several computations of Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu invariants for some 3-manifolds.
In this paper, we establish a rigorous correspondence between the two tube algebras, that one comes from the Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu TQFT introduced by Ocneanu and another comes from the sector theory introduced by Izumi, and construct a canonical isomorphism between the centers of the two tube algebras, which is a conjugate linear isomorphism preserving the products of the two algebras and commuting with the actions of SL(2,Z). Via this correspondence and the Dehn surgery formula, we compute Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu invariants from several subfactors for basic 3-manifolds including lens spaces and Bri…
We show that for every spherical category $\C$ with invertible dimension, the Turaev-Viro TQFT admits a splitting into blocks which come from an HQFT, called the Turaev-Viro HQFT. The Turaev-Viro HQFT has the classifying space $B\grad$ as target space, where $\grad$ is a group obtained from the category $\C$. This construction gives a reformulation of the Turaev-Viro TQFT in terms of HQFT. Furthermore the Turaev-Viro HQFT is an extension of the \emph{homotopical Turaev-Viro invariant} which splits the Turaev-Viro invariant. An application of this result is a description of the homological twis…
In this paper, we examine Kitaev's lattice model for an arbitrary complex, semisimple Hopf algebra. We prove that this model gives the same topological invariants as Turaev-Viro theory. Using the description of Turaev-Viro theory as an extended TQFT, we prove that the excited states of the Kitaev model correspond to Turaev-Viro theory on a surface with boundary.
In a previous work arXiv:0903.4512, we have built an homotopical Turaev-Viro invariant and an HQFT from the universal graduation of a spherical category. In the present paper, we show that every graduation $(G,p)$ of a spherical category $\C$ defines an homotopical Turaev-Viro invariant $HTV_{\C}^{(G,p)}$ and an HQFT $\m{H}_{\C}^{(G,p)}$. Furthermore we show that the Turaev-Viro TQFT will be split into blocks coming the HQFT $\m{H}_{\C}^{(G,p)}$. We show that this decomposition is maximal for the universal graduation of the category, which means that for every graduation $(G,p)$ the HQFT $\m{H…
This paper presents a way to estimate the Heegaard genus of a $3$-manifold using the Turaev-Viro state sum TQFT. The Turaev-Viro state sum TQFT is derived from the modular category associated to the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$, which is unitary for some $q$ by Wenzl. Hence by Turaev and Virelizier the corresponding TQFT is unitary. We modify a proof by Garoufalidis to give a lower bound of the Heegaard genus using a unitary TQFT, and then use the software Regina to provide some known counterexamples to the rank versus genus conjecture.
In this paper we show how one can extend Turaev-Viro invariants, defined for an arbitrary spherical fusion category $C$, to 3-manifolds with corners. We demonstrate that this gives an extended TQFT which conjecturally coincides with the Reshetikhin-Turaev TQFT corresponding to the Drinfeld center $Z(C)$. In the present paper we give a partial proof of this statement.
On the asymptotic expansion of quantum invariants related to surgeries of Whitehead link I: Relative Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants and the Turaev-Viro invariants at $e^{\frac{2π\sqrt{-1}}{N+\frac{1}{2}}}$
We give a categorical setting in which Penrose graphical calculus naturally extends to graphs drawn on the boundary of a handlebody. We use it to introduce invariants of 3-manifolds presented by Heegaard splittings. We recover Kuperberg invariants when the category comes from an involutory Hopf algebra and Turaev-Viro invariants when the category is semi-simple and spherical.
By applying a variant of the TQFT constructed by Blanchet, Habegger, Masbaum, and Vogel, and using a construction of Ohtsuki, we define a module endomorphism for each knot K by using a tangle obtained from a surgery presentation of K. We show that it is strong shift equivalent to the Turaev-Viro endomorphism associated to K. Following Viro, we consider the endomorphisms that one obtains after coloring the meridian and longitude of the knot. We show that the traces of these endomorphisms encode the same information as the colored Jones polynomials of K at a root of unity. Most of the discussion…
In the third paper in this series, we examine the Reshetikhin-Turaev and Turaev-Viro TQFTs at the level of surfaces. In particular, we show that for a closed surface $Σ$, $Z_{TV, \mathcal{C}}(Σ) \cong Z_{RT, Z(\C)}(Σ)$, thus extending the equality of 3-manifold invariants proved in an earlier paper to an equivalence of TQFTs. We also describe how to compute Turaev-Viro state sums for 3-manifolds with embedded ribbon graphs.
In this paper, we describe the relation between the Turaev--Viro TQFT and the string-net space introduced in the papers of Levin and Wen. In particular, the case of surfaces with boundary is considered in detail.
In this paper, we present the next step in the proof that $Z_{TV,\C} = Z_{RT, Z(\C)}$, namely that the theories give the same 3-manifold invariants. In future papers we will show that this equality extends to an equivalence of TQFTs.
A Group category is a spherical category whose simple objects are invertible. The invariant of Turaev-Viro with this particular category is in fact the invariant of Dijkgraaf-Witten whose the group and the 3-cocycle is given by the simple objects and the associativity constraint of the category.
We consider the asymptotics of the Turaev-Viro and the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of a hyperbolic $3$-manifold, evaluated at the root of unity $\exp({2π\sqrt{-1}}/{r})$ instead of the standard $\exp({π\sqrt{-1}}/{r})$. We present evidence that, as $r$ tends to $\infty$, these invariants grow exponentially with growth rates respectively given by the hyperbolic and the complex volume of the manifold. This reveals an asymptotic behavior that is different from that of Witten's Asymptotic Expansion Conjecture, which predicts polynomial growth of these invariants when evaluated at the standard ro…
We obtain a formula for the Turaev-Viro invariants of a link complement in terms of values of the colored Jones polynomial of the link. As an application we give the first examples for which the volume conjecture of Chen and the third named author\,\cite{Chen-Yang} is verified. Namely, we show that the asymptotics of the Turaev-Viro invariants of the Figure-eight knot and the Borromean rings complement determine the corresponding hyperbolic volumes. Our calculations also exhibit new phenomena of asymptotic behavior of values of the colored Jones polynomials that seem not to be predicted by nei…
Given an oriented knot K in S^3 and a TQFT, Turaev and Viro defined modules somewhat analogous to the Alexander module. We work with the (V_p,Z_p) theories of Blanchet, Habegger, Masbaum and Vogel {BHMV} for p \ge 3, and consider the associated modules. In {G}, we defined modules which also depend on the extra data of a color c which is assigned to a meridian of the knot in the construction of the module. These modules can be used to calculate the quantum invariants of cyclic branched covers of knots and have other uses. Suppose now that S is a satellite knot with companion C, and pattern P. W…
The category of finite dimensional module over the quantum superalgebra U_q(sl(2|1)) is not semi-simple and the quantum dimension of a generic U_q(sl(2|1))-module vanishes. This vanishing happens for any value of q (even when q is not a root of unity). These properties make it difficult to create a fusion or modular category. Loosely speaking, the standard way to obtain such a category from a quantum group is: 1) specialize q to a root of unity; this forces some modules to have zero quantum dimension, 2) quotient by morphisms of modules with zero quantum dimension, 3) show the resulting catego…
In this paper, we establish the general theory of (2+1)-dimensional topological quantum field theory (in short, TQFT) with a Verlinde basis. It is a consequence that we have a Dehn surgery formula for 3-manifold invariants for this kind of TQFT's. We will show that Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu unitary TQFT's obtained from subfactors satisfy the axioms of TQFT's with Verlinde bases. Hence, in a Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu TQFT, we have a Dehn surgery formula for 3-manifolds. It turns out that this Dehn surgery formula is nothing but the formula of the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant constructed from a tube system,…
We define an invariant of graphs embedded in a three-manifold and a partition function for 2-complexes embedded in a triangulated four-manifold by specifying the values of variables in the Turaev-Viro and Crane-Yetter state sum models. In the case of the three-dimensional invariant, we prove a duality formula relating its Fourier transform to another invariant defined via the coloured Jones polynomial. In the case of the four-dimensional partition function, we give a formula for it in terms of a regular neighbourhood of the 2-complex and the signature of its complement. Some examples are compu…
The Turaev-Viro invariant is defined as a certain state sum calculated on an arbitrary simple spine of a 3-manifold. We specify each term of the sum as 0-term, 1-term or 2-term such that each sum of the terms having the same type is an invariant too. The sum of the 0-terms is equal to the square of the modulus of the so-called SO(3)-invariant. In the paper we express the sum of the 0-terms and 2-terms and the sum of the 1-terms via the Turaev-Viro invariants. Tables of values of the invariants are enclosed. The values are presented as polynomials on primitive roots of unity with integer coeffi…
We show that the Hilbert space basis that defines the Ponzano-Regge- Turaev-Viro-Ooguri combinatorial definition of 3-d Quantum Gravity is the same as the one that defines the Loop Representation. We show how to compute lengths in Witten's 3-d gravity and how to reconstruct the 2-d geometry from a state of Witten's theory. We show that the non-degenerate geometries are contained in the Witten's Hilbert space. We sketch an extension of the combinatorial construction to the physical 4-d case, by defining a modification of Regge calculus in which areas, rather than lengths, are taken as independe…
A shaped triangulation is a finite triangulation of an oriented pseudo three manifold where each tetrahedron carries dihedral angles of an ideal hyberbolic tetrahedron. To each shaped triangulation, we associate a quantum partition function in the form of an absolutely convergent state integral which is invariant under shaped 3-2 Pachner moves and invariant with respect to shape gauge transformations generated by total dihedral angles around internal edges through the Neumann-Zagier Poisson bracket. Similarly to Turaev-Viro theory, the state variables live on edges of the triangulation but tak…
Let C be a spherical fusion category. We prove that the Turaev-Viro-Barrett-Westbury state sum invariant of 3-manifolds derived from C is equal to the Reshetikhin-Turaev surgery invariant of 3-manifolds derived from Z(C), where Z(C) is the Drinfeld-Joyal-Street center of C.
The Turaev-Viro state sum invariant can be extended to 3-manifolds with free boundaries. We use this fact to describe generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators as Turaev-Viro invariants of solid tori. This provides a geometric understanding of the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$-equivariance of these indicators.
We define a universal state sum construction which specializes to most previously known state sums (Turaev-Viro, Dijkgraaf-Witten, Crane-Yetter, Douglas-Reutter, Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev surgery formula, Brown-Arf). The input data for the state sum is an n-category satisfying various conditions, including finiteness, semisimplicity and n-pivotality. From this n-category one constructs an n+1-dimensional TQFT, and applying the TQFT gluing rules to a handle decomposition of an n+1-manifold produces the state sum.
This paper generalizes two facts about oriented 3d TFTs to the unoriented case. On one hand, it is known that oriented 3d TFTs having a topological boundary condition admit a state-sum construction known as the Turaev-Viro construction. This is related to the string-net construction of fermionic phases of matter. We show how Turaev-Viro construction can be generalized to unoriented 3d TFTs. On the other hand, it is known that the "fermionic" versions of oriented TFTs, known as Spin-TFTs, can be constructed in terms of "shadow" TFTs which are ordinary oriented TFTs with an anomalous $\mathbb{Z}…
We show how the Turaev--Viro invariant can be understood within the framework of Chern--Simons theory with gauge group SU(2). We also describe a new invariant for certain class of graphs by interpreting the triangulation of a manifold as a graph consisiting of crossings and vertices with three lines. We further show, for $S^3$ and $RP^3$, that the Turaev-Viro invariant is the square of the absolute value of their respective partition functions in SU(2) Chern--Simons theory and give a method of evaluating the later in a closed form for lens spaces $L_{p,1}$.
We construct a Kitaev model with defects using twists or 2-cocycles of semi-simple, finite-dimensional Hopf algebras as defect data. This data is derived by applying Tannaka duality to Turaev-Viro topological quantum field theories with defects. From this we also derive additional conditions for moving, fusing and braiding excitations in the Kitaev model with defects. We give a description of excitations in the Kitaev model and show that they satisfy conditions we derive from Turaev-Viro topological quantum field theories with defects. Assigning trivial defect data one obtains transparent defe…
Starting from the quantum group SL_q(2,C), we construct operator invariants of 3-cobordisms with spin structure, satisfying the requirements of a topological quantum field theory and refining the Reshetikhin--Turaev and Turaev--Viro models. We establish the relationship between these two refined models.
We prove the Turaev-Viro invariants volume conjecture for a "universal" class of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds that produces all 3-manifolds with empty or toroidal boundary by Dehn filling. This leads to two-sided bounds on the volume of any hyperbolic 3-manifold with empty or toroidal boundary in terms of the growth rate of the Turaev-Viro invariants of the complement of an appropriate link contained in the manifold. We also provide evidence for a conjecture of Andersen, Masbaum and Ueno (AMU conjecture) about certain quantum representations of surface mapping class groups. A key step in our …
We prove in the context of quantum groups at even roots of unity that a Turaev-Viro type invariant of a 3-dimensional cobordism M equals the tensor product of the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of M and M*, where M* denotes M with orientation reversed.
Using Ohtsuki's method, we prove the Asymptotic Expansion Conjecture and the Volume Conjecture of the Reshetikhin-Turaev and the Turev-Viro invariants for all hyperbolic $3$-manifolds obtained by doing a Dehn-surgery along the figure-$8$ knot.
We show that the renormalized quantum invariants of links and graphs in the 3-sphere, derived from tensor categories in ["Modified quantum dimensions and re-normalized link invariants", arXiv:0711.4229] lead to modified 6j-symbols and to new state sum 3-manifold invariants. We give examples of categories such that the associated standard Turaev-Viro 3-manifold invariants vanish but the secondary invariants may be non-zero. The categories in these examples are pivotal categories which are neither ribbon nor semi-simple and have an infinite number of simple objects.
We construct three classes of generalised orbifolds of Reshetikhin-Turaev theory for a modular tensor category $\mathcal{C}$, using the language of defect TQFT from [arXiv:1705.06085]: (i) spherical fusion categories give orbifolds for the "trivial" defect TQFT associated to vect, (ii) $G$-crossed extensions of $\mathcal{C}$ give group orbifolds for any finite group $G$, and (iii) we construct orbifolds from commutative $Δ$-separable symmetric Frobenius algebras in $\mathcal{C}$. We also explain how the Turaev-Viro state sum construction fits into our framework by proving that it is isomorphic…
If $C$ is a spherical fusion category, the string-net construction associates to each closed oriented surface $Σ$ the vector space $Z_\text{SN}(Σ)$ of linear combinations of $C$-labelled graphs on $Σ$ modulo local relations, in a way which is functorial with respect to orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of surfaces. We show how to extend this assignment to a 3-dimensional topological quantum field theory (TQFT), by defining how the surgery generators in Juhász' presentation of the oriented 3-dimensional bordism category act on the string-net vector spaces. We show that the resulting TQFT, …
Motivated by suggestions of Paolo Cotta-Ramusino's work at the physical level of rigor relating BF theory to the Donaldson polynomials, we provide a construction applicable to the Turaev/Viro and Crane/Yetter invariants of *a priori* finer invariants dependent on a choice of (co)homology class on the manifold
We provide a description of adequate categorical data to give a Turaev-Viro type state-sum construct of invariants of 3-manifolds with a system of defects, generalizing the Dijkgraaf-Witten type invariants of our earlier work. We term the defects in our construction defects-with-structure because algebraic data associated to them is in general richer than a module category over the spherical fusion category from which the theory is constructed when no defect is present.
A quantum deformation of 3-dimensional lattice gauge theory is defined by applying the Reshetikhin-Turaev functor to a Heegaard diagram associated to a given cell complex. In the root-of-unity case, the construction is carried out with a modular Hopf algebra. In the topological (weak-coupling) limit, the gauge theory partition function gives a 3-fold invariant, coinciding in the simplicial case with the Turaev-Viro one. We discuss bounded manifolds as well as links in manifolds. By a dimensional reduction, we obtain a q-deformed gauge theory on Riemann surfaces and find a connection with the a…
We initiate a systematic study of 3-dimensional `defect' topological quantum field theories, that we introduce as symmetric monoidal functors on stratified and decorated bordisms. For every such functor we construct a tricategory with duals, which is the natural categorification of a pivotal bicategory. This captures the algebraic essence of defect TQFTs, and it gives precise meaning to the fusion of line and surface defects as well as their duality operations. As examples, we discuss how Reshetikhin-Turaev and Turaev-Viro theories embed into our framework, and how they can be extended to defe…
We use geometric methods to show that given any $3$-manifold $M$, and $g$ a sufficiently large integer, the mapping class group $\mathrm{Mod}(Σ_{g,1})$ contains a coset of an abelian subgroup of rank $\lfloor \frac{g}{2}\rfloor,$ consisting of pseudo-Anosov monodromies of open-book decompositions in $M.$ We prove a similar result for rank two free cosets of $\mathrm{Mod}(Σ_{g,1}).$ These results have applications to a conjecture of Andersen, Masbaum and Ueno about quantum representations of surface mapping class groups. For surfaces with boundary, and large enough genus, we construct cosets of…
We prove a theorem in 3-dimensional topological field theory: a Reshetikhin-Turaev theory admits a nonzero boundary theory iff it is a Turaev-Viro theory. The proof immediately implies a characterization of fusion categories in terms of dualizability. The main theorem applies to physics, where it implies an obstruction to a gapped 3-dimensional quantum system admitting a gapped boundary theory. Appendices on bordism multicategories and on internal duals may be of independent interest.; v2 extensive revision: added theorem on dualizable 2-categories, material on natural transformations, reworke…
We construct large classes of exactly solvable pseudo-Hermitian 2D spin Hamiltonians. The ground states of these systems depend only on the spatial topology of the system. We identify the ground state system on a surface with the value assigned to the surface by a non-semisimple TQFT generalizing the Turaev-Viro model. A non-trivial example arises from a non-semisimple subcategory of representations of quantum sl(2) where the quantum parameter is specialized to a root of unity.
In [BK], it is shown that the Turaev-Viro invariants defined for a spherical fusion category $\mathcal{A}$ extends to invariants of 3-manifolds with corners. In [Kir], an equivalent formulation for the 2-1 part of the theory (2-manifolds with boundary) is described using the space of "stringnets with boundary conditions" as the vector spaces associated to 2-manifolds with boundary. Here we construct a similar theory for the 3-2 part of the 4-3-2 theory in [CY1993].
The computational complexity class #P captures the difficulty of counting the satisfying assignments to a boolean formula. In this work, we use basic tools from quantum computation to give a proof that the SO(3) Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev (WRT) invariant of 3-manifolds is #P-hard to calculate. We then apply this result to a question about the combinatorics of Heegaard splittings, motivated by analogous work on link diagrams by M. Freedman. We show that, if $\#\text{P}\neq\text{FP}^\text{NP}$, then there exist infinitely many Heegaard splittings which cannot be made logarithmically thin by local…
