Unstable pressure and u-equilibrium states are introduced and investigated for a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphsim $f$. We define the u-pressure $P^u(f, φ)$ of $f$ at a continuous function $φ$ via the dynamics of $f$ on local unstable leaves. We consider both hyperbolic sets and partially hyperbolic sets attracting a set of points with positive volume in a Riemannian manifold. We obtain several results on the topological structure of such sets for diffeomorphisms whose differentiability is bigger than one. We show in particular that there are no partially hyperbolic horseshoes with positive volume for such diffeomorphisms. We also give a description of the limit set of almost every point belonging to a hyperbolic set or a partially hyperbolic set with positive volume.

In this paper we obtain two criteria of stable ergodicity outside the partially hyperbolic scenario. In both criteria, we use a weak form of hyperbolicity called chain-hyperbolicity. We consider the structure of substantially dissipative complex Hénon maps admitting a dominated splitting on the Julia set. The dominated splitting assumption corresponds to the one-dimensional assumption that there are no critical points on the Julia set.
