For Y a closed normal subvariety of codimension c of a smooth complex variety X, Brylinski and Kashiwara showed that the local cohomology module H^c_Y(X,O_X) contains a unique simple D_X-submodule, denoted by L(Y,X). In this paper the analogous result is shown for X and Y defined over a perfect field of finite characteristic. Moreover, a local construction of Ll(Y,X) is given, relating it to the theory of tight closure. From the construction one obtains a criterion for the D_X-simplicity of H^c_Y(X).
For given polynomial map $F:\C^2\to\C^2$ with nonvanishing jacobian we associate a variety whose homology or intersection homology describes the geometry of singularities at infinity of this map.
We present a definition of intersection homology for real algebraic varieties that is analogous to Goresky and MacPherson's original definition of intersection homology for complex varieties.
A generalization of the formula of Fine and Rao for the ranks of the intersection homology groups of a complex algebraic variety is given. The proof uses geometric properties of intersection homology and mixed Hodge theory.
Let X be a complex analytic manifold. Given a closed subspace $Y\subset X$ of pure codimension p>0, we consider the sheaf of local algebraic cohomology $H^p_{[Y]}({\cal O}_X)$, and ${\cal L}(Y,X)\subset H^p_{[Y]}({\cal O}_X)$ the intersection homology D_X-Module of Brylinski-Kashiwara. We give here an algebraic characterization of the spaces Y such that L(Y,X) coincides with $H^p_{[Y]}({\cal O}_X)$, in terms of Bernstein-Sato functional equations.
We consider a possibility of the existence of intersection homology morphism, which would be associated to a map of analytic varieties. We assume that the map is an inclusion of codimension one. Then the existence of a morphism follows from Saito's decomposition theorem. For varieties with conical singularities we show, that the existence of intersection homology morphism is exactly equivalent to the validity of Hard Lefschetz Theorem for links. For varieties with arbitrary analytic singularities we extract a remarkable property, which we call Local Hard Lefschetz.
We describe the homology intersection form associated to regular holonomic GKZ systems in terms of the combinatorics of regular triangulations. Combining this result with the twisted period relation, we obtain a formula of cohomology intersection numbers in terms of a Laurent series. We show that the cohomology intersection number depends rationally on the parameters. We also prove a conjecture of F. Beukers and C. Verschoor on the signature of the monodromy invariant hermitian form. This is a continuation of the previous work arXiv:1904.00565.
This paper defines new intersection homology groups. The basic idea is this. Ordinary homology is locally trivial. Intersection homology is not. It may have significant local cycles. A local-global cycle is defined to be a family of such local cycles that is, at the same time, a global cycle. The motivating problem is the numerical characterisation of the flag vectors of convex polytopes. Central is a study of the cycles on a cone and a cylinder, in terms of those on the base. This leads to the topological definition of local-global intersection homology, and a formula for the expected Betti n…
The Riemann-Wirtinger integral is an analogue of the hypergeometric integral, which is defined as an integral on a one-dimensional complex torus. We study the intersection forms on the twisted homology and cohomology groups associated with the Riemann-Wirtinger integral. We derive explicit formulas of some intersection numbers, and apply them to study the monodromy representation, connection problems, and contiguity relations.
Intersection homology is obtained from ordinary homology by imposing conditions on how the embedded simplices meet the strata of a space $X$. In this way, for the middle perversity, properties such as strong Lefschetz are preserved. This paper defines local-global intersection homology groups, that record global information about the singularities of $X$. They differ from intersection homology in that stratified rather than ordinary simplices are used. An example of such is $σ_j\times Cσ_i$, where $σ_i$ and $σ_j$ are ordinary simplices, and $C$ is the coning operator. The paper concludes with …
We prove that the intersection homology Poincare' polynomial P(X) of an affine toric variety X is bounded below by the product P(Y)P(X/Y), where Y is the closure of any orbit in X and X/Y is a slice transverse to the orbit. This proves a combinatorial conjecture of Kalai for rational polytopes.
Let R be a regular, local and F-finite ring defined over a field of finite characteristic. Let I be an ideal of height c with normal quotient $A=R/I$. It is shown that the local cohomology module H^c_I(R) contains a unique simple D_R--submodule L(A,R). This should be viewed as a finite characteristic analog of the Kashiwara--Brylinski D_R--module in characteristic zero which corresponds to the intersection cohomology complex via the Riemann--Hilbert correspondence. Besides the existence of L(A,R), more importantly, we give its construction as a certain dual of the tight closure of zero in $H^d…
Suppose $M^{n+1}$ is a complex manifold and K is a hypersurface with isolated singularities. Let $ω$ be a holomorphic form on $M\setminus K$ with the first order pole on K. The Leray residue of such form gives an element in the n-th homology of K which is the Alexander dual to $[ω]\in H^{n+1}(M\setminus K)$. It always lifts to the intersection homology if 0 does not belong to the spectra of a singular points. We assume that singularities are described by the quasihomogeneous equations in certain coordinate systems. Suppose that oscillation indicators of the singular points are greater then -1.…
Let $f:X-->Y$ be a map of algebraic varieties. Barthel, Brasselet, Fieseler, Gabber and Kaup have shown that there exists a homomorphism of intersection homology groups $f^*:IH^*(Y)-->IH^*(X)$ compatible with the induced homomorphism on cohomology. The crucial point in the argument is reduction to the finite characteristic. We give an alternative and short proof of the existence of a homomorphism $f^*$. Our construction is an easy application of the Decomposition Theorem.
The study of regularity and complete intersection of a tensor product of commutative algebras possessing the same property started with Grothendieck in 1965 and has continued until today. Surprisingly, the homology theory of Andre and Quillen, developed by these authors in 1967, has never been used for this study. With the help of this theory, we can (slightly) generalize the results known up to now. But more important, we hope to convince the reader that this homology theory is the adequate tool to handle these problems: the proofs are very short and (assuming some flatness hypothesis) it all…
Although intersection homology lacks a ring structure, certain expressions (called uniform) in the intersection homology of an irreducible projective variety $X$ always give the same value, when computed via the decomposition theorem on any resolution $X_r\to X$. This paper uses uniform (and non-uniform) expressions to define what is believed to be the usual intersection homology (and its local-global variant) of a convex polytope (or a projective toric variety). Such expressions are generated by the facets, and so may lead to necessary numerical conditions on the flag vector. Most of the conc…
Suppose M is a complex manifold of dimension $n+1$ and K is a hypersurface in M. By Poincaré duality we define a residue morphism $res:H^{k+1}(M\setminus K)\longrightarrow H_{2n-k}(K)$ which generalizes the classical Leray residue morphism to cohomology for smooth K. We assume that K has isolated quasihomogeneous singularities. Suppose $ω$ is a holomorphic form of the type $(n+1,0)$ with the first order pole on K. The purpose of this note is to give a short, self contained proof of a criterion which tells us when the residue of $ω$ lifts to the intersection homology of K.
In \cite{M}, Sebastian Mizera discovered a tree expansion formula of a homology intersection number on the configuration space $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$. The formula originates in a study of Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relation in string theory. In this paper, we give an elementary proof of the formula. The basic ingredients are the combinatorics of the real moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}(\R)$ and a combinatorial identity related to the face number of the associahedron.
It has long been known that every quasi-homogeneous normal complex surface singularity with Q-homology sphere link has universal abelian cover a Brieskorn complete intersection singularity. We describe a broad generalization: First, one has a class of complete intersection normal complex surface singularities called "splice type singularities", which generalize Brieskorn complete intersections. Second, these arise as universal abelian covers of a class of normal surface singularities with Q-homology sphere links, called "splice-quotient singularities". According to the Main Theorem, splice-quo…
We introduce relative twisted homology and cohomology groups associated with Euler type integrals of solutions to Lauricella's system $F_D(a,b,c)$ of hypergeometric differential equations. We define an intersection form between relative twisted homology groups and that between relative twisted cohomology groups, and show their compatibility. We prove that the relative twisted homology group is canonically isomorphic to the space of local solutions to $F_D(a,b,c)$ for any parameters $a,b,c$. Through this isomorphism, we study $\cF_D(a,b,c)$ by the relative twisted homology and cohomology groups…
This paper describes a paving by affines for regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in all Lie types, namely a kind of cell decomposition that can be used to compute homology despite its weak closure conditions. Precup recently proved a stronger result; we include ours because we use different methods. We then use this paving to prove that the homology of the Peterson variety injects into the homology of the full flag variety. The proof uses intersection theory and expands the class of the Peterson variety in the homology of the flag variety in terms of the basis of Schubert classes. We explic…
The tropical (p, q)-homology groups of Itenberg, Katzarkov, Mikhalkin and Zharkov are the tropical analogues of the Hodge decomposition of the cohomology of complex algebraic varieties. There is a well-defined intersection pairing on tropical (1, 1)-classes of a compact non-singular tropical surface. Here we compute directly the (1, 1)-homology of a non-singular floor decomposed tropical surface in tropical projective space, along with the intersection form.
In the paper "Geometry of polynomial mapping at infinity via intersection homology" the second and third authors associated to a given polynomial mapping $F : \C^2 \to \C^2$ with nonvanishing jacobian a variety whose homology or intersection homology describes the geometry of singularities at infinity of the mapping. We generalize this result.
Let $V$ be a degree $d$, reduced hypersurface in $\mathbb{CP}^{n+1}$, $n \geq 1$, and fix a generic hyperplane, $H$. Denote by $\mathcal{U}$ the (affine) hypersurface complement, $\mathbb{CP}^{n+1}- V \cup H$, and let $\mathcal{U}^c$ be the infinite cyclic covering of $\mathcal{U}$ corresponding to the kernel of the linking number homomorphism. Using intersection homology theory, we give a new construction of the Alexander modules $H_i(\mathcal{U}^c;\mathbb{Q})$ of the hypersurface complement and show that, if $i \leq n$, these are torsion over the ring of rational Laurent polynomials. We also…
We define the rigid homology. The trace morphism in rigid cohomology define by duality the cycle class in rigid homology. We verify the compatibility of this classes with rationnal equivalence and intersection theory. We deduce some formal consequences such as the Riemman-Roch-Grothendieck theorem in rigid cohomology and the self-intersection formula.
Classical definitions of locally complete intersection (l.c.i.) homomorphisms of commutative rings are limited to maps that are essentially of finite type, or flat. The concept introduced in this paper is meaningful for homomorphisms phi : R \longrightarrow S of commutative noetherian rings. It is defined in terms of the structure of phi in a formal neighborhood of each point of Spec S. We characterize the l.c.i. property by different conditions on the vanishing of the André-Quillen homology of the R-algebra S. One of these descriptions establishes a very general form of a conjecture of Quille…
While the topological types of {normal} surface singularities with homology sphere link have been classified, forming a rich class, until recently little was known about the possible analytic structures. We proved in [Geom. Topol. 9(2005) 699-755] that many of them can be realized as complete intersection singularities of "splice type", generalizing Brieskorn type. We show that a normal singularity with homology sphere link is of splice type if and only if some naturally occurring knots in the singularity link are themselves links of hypersurface sections of the singular point. The Casson Inva…
We show that for a complete complex algebraic variety the pure component of homology coincides with the image of intersection homology. Therefore pure homology is topologically invariant. To obtain slightly more general results we introduce "image homology" for noncomplete varieties.
We study the relation between a complex projective set C in CP^n and the set R in RP^(2n+1) defined by viewing each equation of C as a pair of real equations. Once C is presented by quadratic equations, we can apply a spectral sequence to efficiently compute the homology of R; using the fact that the (Z_2)-cohomology of R is a free H*(C)-module with two generators we can in principle reconstruct the homology of C. Explicit computations for the intersection of two complex quadrics are presented.
A fundamental goal of algebraic geometry is to do for singular varieties whatever we can do for smooth ones. Intersection homology, for example, directly produces groups associated to any variety which have almost all the properties of the usual homology groups of a smooth variety. Minimal model theory suggests the possibility of working more indirectly by relating any singular variety to a variety which is smooth or nearly so. Here we use ideas from minimal model theory to define some characteristic numbers for singular varieties, generalizing the Chern numbers of a smooth variety. This was s…
This paper establishes an isomorphism between the Bar-Natan skein module of the solid torus with a particular boundary curve system and the homology of the (n,n) Springer variety. The results build on Khovanov's work with crossingless matchings and the cohomology of the (n,n) Springer variety. We also give a formula for comultiplication in the Bar-Natan skein module for this specific three-manifold and boundary curve system.
We characterize the tempered part of the automorphic Langlands category D-mod(Bun_G) using the geometry of the big cell in the affine Grassmannian. We deduce that, for $G$ non-abelian, tempered D-modules have no de Rham cohomology with compact supports. The latter fact boils down to a concrete statement, which we prove using the Ran space and some explicit t-structure estimates: for $G$ non-abelian and $Σ$ a smooth affine curve, the Borel-Moore homology of the indscheme $Maps(Σ,G)$ vanishes.
