Intersection homology is obtained from ordinary homology by imposing conditions on how the embedded simplices meet the strata of a space $X$. In this way, for the middle perversity, properties such as strong Lefschetz are preserved. This paper defines local-global intersection homology groups, that record global information about the singularities of $X$. They differ from intersection homology in that stratified rather than ordinary simplices are used. An example of such is $σ_j\times Cσ_i$, where $σ_i$ and $σ_j$ are ordinary simplices, and $C$ is the coning operator. The paper concludes with a sketch of the relationship between local-global homology and the geometry of convex polytopes. This paper is a more formal exposition of part of the author's `Local-global intersection homology', alg-geom/9709011.
We study random simplicial complexes in the multi-parameter upper model. In this model simplices of various dimensions are taken randomly and independently, and our random simplicial complex $Y$ is then taken to be the minimal simplicial complex containing this collection of simplices. We study the asymptotic behavior of the homology of $Y$ as the number of vertices goes to $\infty$. We observe the following phenomenon asymptotically almost surely. The given probabilities with which the simplices are taken determine a range of dimensions $\ell \leq k \leq \ell'$ with $\ell' \leq 2\ell +1$, out…
We derive spectral sequences for the intersection homology of stratified fibrations and approximate tubular neighborhoods in manifold stratified spaces. These neighborhoods include regular neighborhoods in PL stratified spaces.
We generalize the very well known boundary operator of the ordinary singular homology theory, defined in many books about algebraic topology. We describe a variant of this ordinary simplicial boundary operator where the usual boundary (n-1)-simplices of each n-simplex are replaced by combinations of internal (n-1)- simplices parallel to the faces. This construction may lead to an infinite class of extraordinary non-isomorphic homology theories. We show further some interesting constructions on the standard simplex.
Intersection homology is a topological invariant which detects finer information in a space than ordinary homology. Using ideas from classical simple homotopy theory, we construct local combinatorial transformations on simplicial complexes under which intersection homology remains invariant. In particular, we obtain the notions of stratified formal deformations and stratified spines of a complex, leading to reductions of complexes prior to computation of intersection homology. We implemented the algorithmic execution of such transformations, as well as the calculation of intersection homology,…
An IP-space is a pseudomanifold whose defining local properties imply that its middle perversity global intersection homology groups satisfy Poincaré duality integrally. We show that the symmetric signature induces a map of Quinn spectra from IP bordism to the symmetric $L$-spectrum of $\Z$, which is, up to weak equivalence, an $E_\infty$ ring map. Using this map, we construct a fundamental $L$-homology class for IP-spaces, and as a consequence we prove the stratified Novikov conjecture for IP-spaces.
This work forms a foundational study of factorization homology, or topological chiral homology, at the generality of stratified spaces with tangential structures. Examples of such factorization homology theories include intersection homology, compactly supported stratified mapping spaces, and Hochschild homology with coefficients. Our main theorem characterizes factorization homology theories by a generalization of the Eilenberg--Steenrod axioms; it can also be viewed as an analogue of the Baez--Dolan cobordism hypothesis formulated for the observables, rather than state spaces, of a topologic…
We show that intersection homology extends Poincare duality to manifold homotopically stratified spaces (satisfying mild restrictions). This includes showing that, on such spaces, the sheaf of singular intersection chains is quasi-isomorphic to the Deligne sheaf.
In this paper, we develop Leray-Serre-type spectral sequences to compute the intersection homology of the regular neighborhood and deleted regular neighborhood of the bottom stratum of a stratified PL-pseudomanifold. The E^2 terms of the spectral sequences are given by the homology of the bottom stratum with a local coefficient system whose stalks consist of the intersection homology modules of the link of this stratum (or the cone on this link). In the course of this program, we establish the properties of stratified fibrations over unfiltered base spaces and of their mapping cylinders. We al…
Recovering homological features of spaces from samples has become one of the central themes of topological data analysis, leading to many successful applications. Many of the results in this area focus on global homological features of a subset of a Euclidean space. In this case, homology recovery predicates on imposing well understood geometric conditions on the underlying set. Typically, these conditions guarantee that small enough neighborhoods of the set have the same homology as the set itself. Existing work on recovering local homological features of a space from samples employs similar …
We develop a framework for computing the homology of weighted simplicial complexes with coefficients in a discrete valuation ring. A weighted simplicial complex, $(X,v)$, introduced by Dawson [Cah. Topol. Géom. Différ. Catég. 31 (1990), pp. 229--243], is a simplicial complex, $X$, together with an integer-valued function, $v$, assigning weights to simplices, such that the weight of any of faces are monotonously increasing. In addition, weighted homology, $H_n^v(X)$, features a new boundary operator, $\partial_n^v$. In difference to Dawson, our approach is centered at a natural homomorphism $θ$…
We revisit the problem of stability of string vacua involving hyperbolic orbifolds using methods from homotopy theory and K-homology. We propose a definition of Type II string theory on such backgrounds that further carry stratified systems of fiber bundles, which generalise the more conventional orbifold and symmetric string backgrounds, together with a classification of wrapped branes by a suitable generalized homology theory. For spaces stratified fibered over hyperbolic orbifolds we use the algebraic K-theory of their fundamental groups and Quinn homology to derive criteria for brane stabi…
We introduce a singular chain intersection homology theory which generalizes that of King and which agrees with the Deligne sheaf intersection homology of Goresky and MacPherson on any topological stratified pseudomanifold, compact or not, with constant or local coefficients, and with traditional perversities or superperversities (those satisfying p(2)>0). For the case p(2)=1, these latter perversitie were introduced by Cappell and Shaneson and play a key role in their superduality theorem for embeddings. We further describe the sheafification of this singular chain complex and its adaptabilit…
We provide a framework for the study of structured manifolds with singularities and their locally determined invariants. This generalizes factorization homology, or topological chiral homology, to the setting of singular manifolds equipped with various tangential structures. Examples of such factorization homology theories include intersection homology, compactly supported stratified mapping spaces, and Hochschild homology with coefficients. Factorization homology theories for singular manifolds are characterized by a generalization of the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms. Using these axioms, we exte…
Given a perversity function in the sense of intersection homology theory, the method of intersection spaces assigns to certain oriented stratified spaces cell complexes whose ordinary reduced homology with real coefficients satisfies Poincaré duality across complementary perversities. The resulting homology theory is well-known not to be isomorphic to intersection homology. For a two-strata pseudomanifold with product link bundle, we give a description of the cohomology of intersection spaces as a space of weighted $L^2$ harmonic forms on the regular part, equipped with a fibred scattering met…
We construct an explicit de Rham isomorphism relating the cohomology rings of Banagl's de Rham and spatial approach to intersection space cohomology for stratified pseudomanifolds with isolated singularities. Intersection space (co-)homology is a modified (co-)homology theory extending Poincaré Duality to stratified pseudomanifolds. The novelty of our result compared to the de Rham isomorphism given previously by Banagl is, that we indeed have an isomorphism of rings and not just of graded vector spaces. We also provide a proof of the de Rham Theorem for cohomology rings of pairs of smooth man…
For a stratified pseudomanifold $X$, we have the de Rham Theorem $ \lau{\IH}{*}{\per{p}}{X} = \lau{\IH}{\per{t} - \per{p}}{*}{X}, $ for a perversity $\per{p}$ verifying $\per{0} \leq \per{p} \leq \per{t}$, where $\per{t}$ denotes the top perversity. We extend this result to any perversity $\per{p}$. In the direction cohomology $\mapsto$ homology, we obtain the isomorphism $$ \lau{\IH}{*}{\per{p}}{X} = \lau{\IH}{\per{t} -\per{p}}{*}{X,\ib{X}{\per{p}}}, $$ where $ {\displaystyle \ib{X}{\per{p}} = \bigcup\_{S \preceq S\_{1} \atop \per{p} (S\_{1})< 0}S = \bigcup\_{\per{p} (S)< 0}\bar{S}.} $ In the…
The theory of intersection spaces assigns cell complexes to certain stratified topological pseudomanifolds depending on a perversity function in the sense of intersection homology. The main property of the intersection spaces is Poincaré duality over complementary perversities for the reduced singular (co)homology groups with rational coefficients. This (co)homology theory is not isomorphic to intersection homology, instead they are related by mirror symmetry. Using differential forms, Banagl extended the intersection space cohomology theory to 2-strata pseudomanifolds with a geometrically fla…
Witt spaces are pseudomanifolds for which the middle-perversity intersection homology with rational coefficients is self-dual. We give a new construction of the symmetric signature for Witt spaces which is similar in spirit to the construction given by Miscenko for manifolds. Our construction has all of the expected properties, including invariance under stratified homotopy equivalence.
We introduce a new algorithm for the structural analysis of finite abstract simplicial complexes based on local homology. Through an iterative and top-down procedure, our algorithm computes a stratification $π$ of the poset $P$ of simplices of a simplicial complex $K$, such that for each strata $P_{π=i} \subset P$, $P_{π=i}$ is maximal among all open subposets $U \subset \overline{P_{π=i}}$ in its closure such that the restriction of the local $\mathbb{Z}$-homology sheaf of $\overline{P_{π=i}}$ to $U$ is locally constant. Passage to the localization of $P$ dictated by $π$ then attaches a canon…
In previous works, we have introduced the blown-up intersection cohomology and used it to extend Sullivan's minimal models theory to the framework of pseudomanifolds, and to give a positive answer to a conjecture of M. Goresky and W. Pardon on Steenrod squares in intersection homology. In this paper, we establish the main properties of this cohomology. One of its major feature is the existence of cap and cup products for any filtered space and any commutative ring of coefficients, at the cochain level. Moreover, we show that each stratified map induces an homomorphism between the blown-up inte…
