We consider dissipative systems resulting from the Gaussian and $alpha$-stable noise perturbations of measure-preserving maps on the $d$ dimensional torus. We study the dissipation time scale and its physical implications as the noise level $\vep$ vanishes.
We show that nonergodic maps give rise to an $O(1/\vep)$ dissipation time whereas ergodic toral automorphisms, including cat maps and their $d$-dimensional generalizations, have an $O(\ln{(1/\vep)})$ dissipation time with a constant related to the minimal, {\em dimensionally averaged entropy} among the automorphism's irreducible blocks. Our approach reduces the calculation of the dissipation time to a nonlinear, arithmetic optimization problem which is solved asymptotically by means of some fundamental theorems in theories of convexity, Diophantine approximation and arithmetic progression. We show that the same asymptotic can be reproduced by degenerate noises as well as mere coarse-graining. We also discuss the implication of the dissipation time in kinematic dynamo.
We study the spectral measures of conservative mixing flows on the 2-torus having one degenerate singularity. We show that, for a sufficiently strong singularity, the spectrum of these flows is typically Lebesgue with infinite multiplicity. For this, we use two main ingredients: 1) a proof of absolute continuity of the maximal spectral type for this class of non-uniformly stretching flows that have an irregular decay of correlations, 2) a geometric criterion that yields infinite Lebesgue multiplicity of the spectrum and that is well adapted to rapidly mixing flows.
Let $ν$ be a probability measure that is ergodic under the endomorphism $(\times p, \times p)$ of the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$, such that $\dim πμ< \dim μ$ for some non-principal projection $π$. We show that, if both $m\neq n$ are independent of $p$, the $(\times m, \times n)$ orbits of $ν$ typical points will equidistribute towards the Lebesgue measure. If $m>p$ then typically the $(\times m, \times p)$ orbits will equidistribute towards the product of the Lebesgue measure with the marginal of $μ$ on the $y$-axis. We also prove results in the same spirit for certain self similar measures $ν$. The…
We construct examples of $C^{1}$ Anosov diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ which are of Krieger type ${\rm III}_{1}$ with respect to Lebesgue measure. This shows that the Gurevic Oseledec phenomena that conservative $C^{1+α}$ Anosov diffeomorphisms have a smooth invariant measure does not hold true in the $C^{1}$ setting.
Let $λ$ denote the probability Lebesgue measure on ${\mathbb T}^2$. For any $C^2$-Anosov diffeomorphism of the $2$-torus preserving $λ$ with measure-theoretic entropy equal to topological entropy, we show that the set of points with nondense orbits is hyperplane absolute winning (HAW). This generalizes the result in~\cite[Theorem~1.4]{T4} for $C^2$-expanding maps of the circle.
We construct a $C^\infty$ area-preserving diffeomorphism of the two-dimensional torus which is Bernoulli (in particular, ergodic) with respect to Lebesgue measure, homotopic to the identity, and has a lift to the universal covering whose rotation set is $\{(0,0)\}$, which in addition has the property that almost every orbit by the lifted dynamics is unbounded and accumulates in every direction of the circle at infinity.
We study measure-theoretical aspects of torus piecewise isometries. Not much is known about this type of dynamical systems, except for the special case of one-dimensional interval exchange mappings. The last case is fundamentally different from the general situation in the presence of an invariant measure (Lebesgue measure), which helps a lot in the analysis. Due to the absence of good methods of analysis of general systems with discontinuities, even the existence of invariant measures of the torus piecewise isometries was an open question. We establish sufficient conditions for the existence/…
The isomorphism problem in ergodic theory was formulated by von Neumann in 1932 in his pioneering paper Zur Operatorenmethode in der klassischen Mechanik (Ann. of Math. (2), 33(3):587--642, 1932). The problem has been solved for some classes of transformations that have special properties, such as the collection of transformations with discrete spectrum or Bernoulli shifts. This paper shows that a general classification is impossible (even in concrete settings) by showing that the collection $E$ of pairs of ergodic, Lebesgue measure preserving diffeomorphisms $(S,T)$ of the 2-torus that are is…
Let $f: \mathbb{T}^2 \to \mathbb{T}^2$ be a homeomorphism homotopic to the identity and $F: \mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}^2$ a lift of $f$ such that the rotation set $ρ(F)$ is a line segment of rational slope containing a point in $\mathbb{Q}^2$. We prove that if $f$ is ergodic with respect to the Lebesgue measure on the torus and the average rotation vector (with respect to same measure) does not belong to $\mathbb{Q}^2$ then some power of $f$ is an annular homeomorphism.
We consider a smooth area-preserving Anosov diffeomorphism $f\colon \mathbb T^2\rightarrow \mathbb T^2$ homotopic to an Anosov automorphism $L$ of $\mathbb T^2$. It is known that the positive Lyapunov exponent of $f$ with respect to the normalized Lebesgue measure is less than or equal to the topological entropy of $L$, which, in addition, is less than or equal to the Lyapunov exponent of $f$ with respect to the probability measure of maximal entropy. Moreover, the equalities only occur simultaneously. We show that these are the only restrictions on these two dynamical invariants.
We prove that generically, both in a topological and measure-theoretical sense, an invariant Lagrangian Diophantine torus of a Hamiltonian system is doubly exponentially stable in the sense that nearby solutions remain close to the torus for an interval of time which is doubly exponentially large with respect to the inverse of the distance to the torus. We also prove that for an arbitrary small perturbation of a generic integrable Hamiltonian system, there is a set of almost full positive Lebesgue measure of KAM tori which are doubly exponentially stable. Our results hold true for real-analyti…
Building on works of Berthé--Steiner--Thuswaldner and Fogg--Nous we show that on the two-dimensional torus, Lebesgue almost every translation admits a natural coding such that the associated subshift satisfies the Boshernitzan criterion. As a consequence we show that for these torus translations, every quasi-periodic potential can be approximated uniformly by one for which the associated Schrödinger operator has Cantor spectrum of zero Lebesgue measure. We also describe a framework that can allow this to be extended to higher-dimensional tori.
We present an example of a C1 Anosov diffeomorphism of a two-torus with a physical measure such that its basin has full Lebesgue measure and its support is a horseshoe of zero measure.
We prove that a Lebesgue measure-preserving linked-twist map defined in the plane is metrically isomorphic to a Bernoulli shift (and thus strongly mixing). This is the first such result for an explicitly defined linked-twist map on a manifold other than the two-torus. Our work builds on that of Wojtkowski who established an ergodic partition for this example using an invariant cone-field in the tangent space.
In dissipative dynamical systems phase space volumes contract, on average. Therefore, the invariant measure on the attractor is singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure. As noted by Ruelle, a generic perturbation pushes the state out of the attractor, hence the statistical features of the perturbation and, in particular, of the relaxation, cannot be understood solely in terms of the unperturbed dynamics on the attractor. This remark seems to seriously limit the applicability of the standard fluctuation dissipation procedure in the statistical mechanics of nonequilibrium (dissipative) syst…
In this paper, we study various aspects of the ODE's flow $X$ solution to the equation $\partial_t X(t,x)=b(X(t,x))$, $X(0,x)=x$ in the $d$-dimensional torus $Y_d$, where $b$ is a regular $\mathbb{Z}^d$-periodic vector field from $\mathbb{R}^d$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$.We present an original and complete picture in any dimension of all logical connections between the following seven conditions involving the field $b$: (i) the everywhere asymptotics of the flow $X$, (ii) the almost-everywhere asymptotics of the flow $X$, (iii) the global rectification of the vector field $b$ in $Y_d$, (iv) the ergodic…
We prove that for a generic measure preserving transformation $T$, the closed group generated by $T$ is a continuous homomorphic image of a closed linear subspace of $L_0(λ,{\mathbb R})$, where $λ$ is Lebesgue measure, and that the closed group generated by $T$ contains an increasing sequence of finite dimensional toruses whose union is dense.
We consider the effect of noise on the dynamics generated by volume-preserving maps on a d-dimensional torus. The quantity we use to measure the irreversibility of the dynamics is the dissipation time. We focus on the asymptotic behaviour of this time in the limit of small noise. We derive universal lower and upper bounds for the dissipation time in terms of various properties of the map and its associated propagators: spectral properties, local expansivity, and global mixing properties. We show that the dissipation is slow for a general class of non-weakly-mixing maps; on the opposite, it is …
In this paper we investigate maps of the two-torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ of the form $T(x,y)=(x+ω,g(x)+f(y))$ for Diophantine $ω\in\mathbb{T}$ and for a class of maps $f,g:\mathbb{T}\to\mathbb{T}$, where each $g$ is strictly monotone and of degree 2, and each $f$ is an orientation preserving circle homeomorphism. For our class of $f$ and $g$ we show that $T$ is minimal and has exactly two invariant and ergodic Borel probability measures. Moreover, these measures are supported on two $T$-invariant graphs. One of the graphs is a Strange Nonchaotic Attractor whose basin of attraction consists of (Lebesg…
We study a class of homeomorphisms of surfaces collectively known as linked-twist maps. We introduce an abstract definition which enables us to give a precise characterisation of a property observed by other authors, namely that such maps fall into one of two classes termed co- and counter-twisting. We single out three specific linked-twist maps, one each on the two-torus, in the plane and on the two-sphere and for each prove a theorem concerning its ergodic properties with respect to the invariant Lebesgue measure. For the map on the torus we prove that there is an invariant, zero-measure Can…
Let $μ$ be a borelian probability measure on $\mathbf{G}:=\mathrm{SL}_d(\mathbb{Z}) \ltimes \mathbb{T}^d$. Define, for $x\in \mathbb{T}^d$, a random walk starting at $x$ denoting for $n\in \mathbb{N}$, \[ \left\{\begin{array}{rcl} X_0 &=&x\\ X_{n+1} &=& a_{n+1} X_n + b_{n+1} \end{array}\right. \] where $((a_n,b_n))\in \mathbf{G}^\mathbb{N}$ is an iid sequence of law $μ$. Then, we denote by $\mathbb{P}_x$ the measure on $(\mathbb{T}^d)^\mathbb{N}$ that is the image of $μ^{\otimes \mathbb{N}}$ by the map $\left((g_n) \mapsto (x,g_1 x, g_2 g_1 x, \dots , g_n \dots g_1 x, \dots)\right)$ and for an…
We define a two-sided analog of Erdös measure on the space of two-sided expansions with respect to the powers of the golden ratio, or, equivalently, the Erdös measure on the 2-torus. We construct the transformation (goldenshift) preserving both Erdös and Lebesgue measures on $\Bbb T^2$ which is the induced automorphism with respect to the ordinary shift (or the corresponding Fibonacci toral automorphism) and proves to be Bernoulli with respect to both measures in question. This provides a direct way to obtain formulas for the entropy dimension of the Erdös measure on the interval, its entropy …
The objective of this note is to present the results from the two recent papers. We study the Navier--Stokes equation on the two--dimensional torus when forced by a finite dimensional white Gaussian noise. We give conditions under which both the law of the solution at any time t>0, projected on a finite dimensional subspace, has a smooth density with respect to Lebesgue measure and the solution itself is ergodic. In particular, our results hold for specific choices of four dimensional white Gaussian noise. Under additional assumptions, we show that the preceding density is everywhere strictly …
We introduce the notion of the relaxation time for noisy quantum maps on the 2d-dimensional torus - a generalization of previously studied dissipation time. We show that relaxation time is sensitive to the chaotic behavior of the corresponding classical system if one simultaneously considers the semiclassical limit ($\hbar$ -> 0) together with the limit of small noise strength ($\ep$ -> 0). Focusing on quantized smooth Anosov maps, we exhibit a semiclassical regime $\hbar<\ep^{E}$ << 1 (where E>1) in which classical and quantum relaxation times share the same asymptotics: in this regime, a qua…
