We obtain some results about continuum-wise expansive homeomorphisms, such as non-existence of stable points and presence of non-trivial connected components within the local stable and unstable sets. These facts have been of importance in theorems of classification of expansive homeomorphisms. They are achieved now, however, by new and self contained techniques that hold on more general settings.
We exploit the techniques developed in [Le] to study N-expansive homeomorphisms on surfaces. We prove that when f is a 2-expansive homeomorphism defined on a compact boundaryless surface M without wandering points then f is expansive. This condition on the wandering set cannot be relaxed: we present an example of a 2-expansive homeomorphisms on the bitorus with wandering points that is not expansive.
In this article we consider several forms of expansivity. We introduce two new definitions related with topological dimension. We study the topology of local stable sets under cw-expansive surface homeomorphisms and expansive homeomorphisms of three-manifolds. The problem of $C^r$-stable expansivity is also considered.
A homeomorphism on a compact metric space is said hyper-expansive if every pair of different compact sets are separated by the homeomorphism in the Hausdorff metric. We characterize such dynamics as those with a finite number of orbits and whose non-wandering set is the union of the repelling and the attracting periodic orbits. We also give a characterization of compact metric spaces admiting hyper-expansive homeomorphisms.
In this article we characterize monotone extensions of cw-expansive homeomorphisms of compact metric spaces. We study the topology of its quotient space in the case of a compact surface. These results are applied to prove that there are cw-expansive homeomorphisms of compact surfaces with infinitely many fixed points and empty wandering set. The examples are quotients of topological perturbations of pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphisms. We also show that there is a cw-expansive homeomorphism with the shadowing property of the 2-sphere.
In this article we construct an expansive homeomorphism of a compact three-dimensional manifold with a fixed point whose local stable set is not locally connected. This homeomorphism is obtained as a topological perturbation of a quasi-Anosov diffeomorphism that is not Anosov.
On a Peano continuum, all local stable and unstable components of a continuum-wise expansive homeomorphism are non trivial. In particular, there is sensitive dependence on initial conditions. This generalizes results in \cite{h,l} about lack of Lyapunov stable points (weak sinks) and existence of non trivial stable and unstable components for expansive homeomorphisms on Peano continua. We also use this fact to generalize a result in \cite{ktt}: a Peano curve $X$ admitting a continuum-wise expansive homeomorphism is nowhere rim-countable. However, it is not resolved the question of whether such…
Downarowicz and Maass (2008) have shown that every Cantor minimal homeomorphism with finite topological rank $K > 1$ is expansive. Bezuglyi, Kwiatkowski, and Medynets (2009) extended the result to non-minimal aperiodic cases. In this paper, we show that all finite-rank zero-dimensional systems are expansive or have infinite odometer systems; this is an extension of the two aforementioned results. Nevertheless, the methods follow similar approaches.
Let $X$ be a compact metric space and let $f:X\rightarrow X$ be a homeomorphism on $X$. We show that if $f$ is both pointwise recurrent and expansive, then the dynamical system $(X, f)$ is topologically conjugate to a subshift of some symbolic system. Moreover, if $f$ is pointwise positively recurrent, then the subshift is semisimple; a counterexample is given to show the necessity of positive recurrence to ensure the semisimilicity.
We show that on a totally disconnected compact metric space every separating homeomorphisms is expansive except at periodic points. We conclude that minimal separating homeomorphisms are expansive and that every separating homeomorphism has asymptotic points. We show that the only spaces admitting separating (or finite expansive) and recurrent homeomorphisms are finite sets. We apply our results to give a characterization of expansivity in terms of the expansivity of the cyclic group of powers of the homeomorphism.
We show that if there exists a topologically expansive homeomorphism on a uniform space, then the space is always a regular space. Through examples we show that in general composition of topologically expansive homeomorphisms need not be topological expansive and also that conjugate of topologically expansive homeomorphism need not be topological expansive. Further, we obtain a characterization of orbit expansivity in terms of topological expansivity and conclude that if there exists a topologically expansive homeomorphism on a compact uniform space then the space must be metrizable. We also s…
We prove that a homeomorphism of a compact metric space has an expansive measure \cite{ms} if and only if it has many ones with invariant support. We also study homeomorphisms for which the expansive measures are dense in the space of Borel probability measures. It is proved that these homeomorphisms exhibit a dense set of Borel probability measures which are expansive with full support. Therefore, their sets of heteroclinic points has no interior and the spaces supporting them have no isolated points.
This article tackles the problem of the classification of expansive homeomorphisms of the plane. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a homeomorphism to be conjugate to a linear hyperbolic automorphism will be presented. The techniques involve topological and metric aspects of the plane. The use of a Lyapunov metric function which defines the same topology as the one induced by the usual metric but that, in general, is not equivalent to it is an example of such techniques. The discovery of a hypothesis about the behavior of Lyapunov functions at infinity allows us to generalize some results…
We study expansive dynamical systems in the setting of distributive lattices and their automorphisms, the usual notion of expansiveness for a homeomorphism of a compact metric space being the particular case when the lattice is the topology of the phase space ordered by inclusion and the automorphism the one induced by the homeomorphism, mapping open sets to open sets. We prove in this context generalizations of Mañé's Theorem and Utz's Theorem about the finite dimensionality of the phase space of an expansive system, and the finiteness of a space supporting a positively expansive homeomorphis…
We introduce minimally expansive and GH-stable points for homeomorphisms on metric spaces and $μ$-uniformly expansive, $μ$-shadowable and strong $μ$-topologically stable points for Borel measures (with respect to a homeomorphism on a metric space). We prove that: (i) minimally expansive shadowable point of a homeomorphism on a compact metric space is topologically stable and GH-stable. (ii) $μ$-uniformly expansive $μ$-shadowable point for a Borel measure $μ$ (with respect to a homeomorphism on a compact metric space) is strong $μ$-topologically stable.
Let $f\colon M\to M$ be an expansive homeomorphism with dense topologically hyperbolic periodic points, $M$ a compact manifold. Then there is a local product structure in an open and dense subset of $M$. Moreover, if some topologically hyperbolic periodic point has codimension one, then this local product structure is uniform. In particular, we conclude that the homeomorphism is conjugated to a linear Anosov diffeomorphism of a torus.
For an $α$-expansive homeomorphism of a compact space we give an elementary proof of the following well-known result in topological dynamics: A sufficient condition for the homeomorphism to have the shadowing property is that it has the $α$-shadowing property for one-jump pseudo orbits (known as the local product structure property). The proof relies on a reformulation of the property of expansiveness in terms of the pseudo orbits of the system.
Let (M,d) be a compact metric space and f:M --> M an expansive homeomorphism. We define Lyapunov exponents L(f,m)_{max} and l(f,mu)_{min} for an f-invariant measure m. When L(f,m)_{max} > 0 and l(f,mu)_{min} < 0 can be interpreted as a weak form of hyperbolicity for f. We prove that if M is a Peano space then there is g>0 such that L(f,m)_{max} > g and l(f,m)_{min}< - g. We also show that the hypothesis that M is a Peano space is necessary to obtain the maximal Lyapunov exponent positive and the minimal Lyapunov exponent negative. Moreover we define Lyapunov exponents for K, a compact f-invari…
In this paper we present a technique for constructing Lyapunov functions based on Whitney's size functions. Applications to asymptotically stable equilibrium points, isolated sets, expansive homeomorphisms and continuum-wise expansive homeomorphisms are given.
In this note we prove that a homeomorphism is countably-expansive if and only if it is measure-expansive. This result is applied for showing that the $C^1$-interior of the sets of expansive, measure-expansive and continuum-wise expansive $C^1$-diffeomorphisms coincide.
It is known that if a compact metric space X admits a minimal expansive homeomorphism then X is totally disconnected. In this note we give a short proof of this result and we analyze its extension to expansive flows.
In this paper we consider expansive homeomorphisms of compact spaces with a hyperbolic metric presenting a self-similar behavior on stable and unstable sets. Several application are given related to Hausdorff dimension, entropy, intrinsically ergodic measures and the transitivity of expansive homeomorphisms with canonical coordinates.
We characterize and describe the extensions of expansive and Anosov homeomorphisms on compact spaces. As an application we obtain a stability result for extensions of Anosov systems, and show a construction that embeds any expansive system inside an expansive system having the shadowing property for the pseudo orbits of the original space.
In this paper we study the polynomial entropy of homeomorphism on compact metric space. We construct a homeomorphism on a compact metric space with vanishing polynomial entropy that it is not equicontinuous. Also we give examples with arbitrarily small polynomial entropy. Finally, we show that expansive homeomorphisms and positively expansive maps of compact metric spaces with infinitely many points have polynomial entropy greater or equal than 1.
Let $M$ be a closed smooth manifold and let $f:M\to M$ be a diffeomorphism. $C^1$-generically, a continuum-wise expansive satisfies Axiom A without cycles. Moreover, there is a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism $f$ such that it is not continuum-wise expansive.
In this paper, we study continuum-wise expansive non-autonomous discrete dynamical systems. We discuss various properties of such non-autonomous systems. We further obtain results for cw-expansive non-autonomous systems with shadowing property and obtain an important equivalence. \keywords{Non-autonomous dynamical systems, continuum-wise expansive, shadowing property
We study homeomorphisms of compact metric spaces whose restriction to the nonwandering set has the pseudo-orbit tracing property. We prove that if there are positively expansive measures, then the topological entropy is positive. Some short applications of this result are included.
We extend some known results from smooth dynamical systems to the category of Lipschitz homeomorphisms of compact metric spaces. We consider dynamical properties as robust expansiveness and structural stability allowing Lipschitz perturbations with respect to a hyperbolic metric. We also study the relationship between Lipschitz topologies and the $C^1$ topology on smooth manifolds.
We define the concept of continuum wise expansive for set-valued functions and prove that if a compact metric space admit a set-valued $cw$-expansive function then the topological entropy of $X$ is positive.} We also introduce the notion of pointwise specification property for set-valued functions and prove that set-valued functions with this property has positive entropy.
We extend the concept of expansive measure \cite{am} defined for homeomorphism to flows. We obtain some properties for such measures including abscense of singularities in the support, aperiodicity, expansivity with respect to time-$T$ maps, invariance under flow-equivalence, negligibleness of orbits, characterization of expansive measures for expansive flows and naturallity under suspensions. As an application we obtain a new proof of the well known fact that there are no continuous expansive flows on surfaces (e.g. \cite{hs}).
We obtain properties of the pairwise sensitive homeomorphisms defined in \cite{cj}. For instance, we prove that their sets of points with converging semi-orbits have measure zero, that such homeomorphisms do not exist in a compact interval and, in the circle, they are the Denjoy ones. Applications including alternative proofs of well-known facts in expansive systems are given.
Downarowicz and Maass (2008) have shown that every Cantor minimal homeomorphism with finite topological rank $K > 1$ is expansive. Bezuglyi, Kwiatkowski and Medynets (2009) extended the result to non-minimal cases. On the other hand, Gambaudo and Martens (2006) had expressed all Cantor minimal continuou surjections as the inverse limit of graph coverings. In this paper, we define a topological rank for every Cantor minimal continuous surjection, and show that every Cantor minimal continuous surjection of finite topological rank has the natural extension that is expansive.

We study directional mean dimension of $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions (where $k$ is a positive integer). On the one hand, we show that there is a $\mathbb{Z}^2$-action whose directional mean dimension (considered as a $[0,+\infty]$-valued function on the torus) is not continuous. On the other hand, we prove that if a $\mathbb{Z}^k$-action is continuum-wise expansive, then the values of its $(k-1)$-dimensional directional mean dimension are bounded. This is a generalization (with a view towards Meyerovitch and Tsukamoto's theorem on mean dimension and expansive multiparameter actions) of a classical re…
Consider a countable amenable group acting by homeomorphisms on a compact metrizable space. Chung and Li asked if expansiveness and positive entropy of the action imply existence of an off-diagonal asymptotic pair. For algebraic actions of polycyclic-by-finite groups, Chung and Li proved it does. We provide examples showing that Chung and Li's result is near-optimal in the sense that the conclusion fails for some non-algebraic action generated by a single homeomorphism, and for some algebraic actions of non-finitely generated abelian groups. On the other hand, we prove that every expansive act…
We introduce topological definitions of expansivity, shadowing, and chain recurrence for homeomorphisms. They generalize the usual definitions for metric spaces. We prove various theorems about topologically Anosov homeomorphisms (maps that are expansive and have the shadowing property) on noncompact and non-metrizable spaces that generalize theorems for such homeomorphisms on compact metric spaces. The main result is a generalization of Smale's spectral decomposition theorem to topologically Anosov homeomorphisms on first countable locally compact paracompact Hausdorff spaces.
In this article we consider the general problem of translating definitions and results from the category of discrete-time dynamical systems to the category of flows. We consider the dynamics of homeomorphisms and flows on compact metric spaces, in particular Peano continua. As a translating tool, we construct continuous, symmetric and monotonous fields of local cross sections for an arbitrary flow without singular points. Next, we use this structure in the study of expansive flows on Peano continua. We show that expansive flows admit no stable point and that every point contains a non-trivial …
Let $X$ be a compact metric space and let $|A|$ denote the cardinality of a set $A$. We prove that if $f\colon X\to X$ is a homeomorphism and $|X|=\infty$ then for all $δ>0$ there is $A\subset X$ such that $|A|=4$ and for all $k\in Z$ there are $x,y\in f^k(A)$, $x\neq y$, such that $dist(x,y)<δ$. An observer that can only distinguish two points if their distance is grater than $δ$, for sure will say that $A$ has at most 3 points even knowing every iterate of $A$ and that $f$ is a homeomorphism. We show that for hyper-expansive homeomorphisms the same $δ$-observer will not fail about the cardin…
We will try to give an overview of one of the landmark results of Jorge Lewowicz: his classification of expansive homeomorphisms of surfaces. The goal will be to present the main ideas with the hope of giving evidence of the deep and beautiful contributions he made to dynamical systems. We will avoid being technical and try to concentrate on the tools introduced by Lewowicz to obtain these classification results such as Lyapunov functions and the concept of persistence for dynamical systems. The main contribution that we will try to focus on is his conceptual framework and approach to mathemat…
We study continuum-wise expansive flows with fixed points on metric spaces and low dimensional manifolds. We give sufficient conditions for a surface flow to be singular cw-expansive and examples showing that cw-expansivity does not imply expansivity. We also construct a singular Axiom A vector field on a three-manifold being singular cw-expansive and with a Lorenz attractor and a Lorenz repeller in its non-wandering set.
We define the concept of continuum wise expansive for flows, and we prove that continuum wise expansive flows on compact metric spaces with topological dimension greater than one have positive entropy.
