In this article I describe my recent geometric localization argument dealing with actions of NONcompact groups which provides a geometric bridge between two entirely different character formulas for reductive Lie groups and answers the question posed in [Sch].
A corresponding problem in the compact group setting was solved by N.Berline, E.Getzler and M.Vergne in [BGV] by an application of the theory of equivariant forms and, particularly, the fixed point integral localization formula.
This localization argument seems to be the first successful attempt in the direction of building a similar theory for integrals of differential forms, equivariant with respect to actions of noncompact groups.
I will explain how the argument works in the SL(2,R) case, where the key ideas are not obstructed by technical details and where it becomes clear how it extends to the general case. The general argument appears in [L].
I put every effort to make this article broadly accessible. Also, although this article mentions characteristic cycles of sheaves, I do not assume that the reader is familiar with this notion.
This article provides a geometric bridge between two entirely different character formulas for reductive Lie groups and answers the question posed by W.Schmid in [Sch]. A corresponding problem in the compact group setting was solved by N.Berline, E.Getzler and M.Vergne in [BGV] by an application of the theory of equivariant forms and particularly the fixed point integral localization formula. This article (besides its representation-theoretical significance) provides a whole family of examples where it is possible to localize integrals to fixed points with respect to an action of a NONcompact …
Vogan and Barbasch-Vogan attach two similar invariants to representations of a reductive Lie group, one by an algebraic process, the other analytic. They conjectured that the two invariants determine each other in a definite manner. Here we prove the conjecture. Our arguments involve two finer invariants -- the characteristic cycles of representations -- which are interesting in their own right.
Let $G$ be a reductive $p$-adic group. We give a short proof of the fact that $G$ always admits supercuspidal complex representations. This result has already been established by A. Kret using the Deligne-Lusztig theory of representations of finite groups of Lie type. Our argument is of a different nature and is self-contained. It is based on the Harish-Chandra theory of cusp forms and it ultimately relies on the existence of elliptic maximal tori in $G$.
The aim of this paper is to give generalizationof the constructionof the Steinberg tempered character on a connected reductive p-adic group. We prove that this character is invariant by the weak restriction of the Jacquet module by analogy to finite reductive groups.
Let $\bf{G}$ be a connected reductive group with connected center defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$, with Frobenius morphism $F$. We parameterize all of the real-valued irreducible complex characters of ${\bf G}^F$ using the Jordan decomposition of characters.
We show the existence of a unitriangular basic set for unipotent blocks simple reductive groups of classical type in bad characteristic with some exceptions. Then,we introduce an algorithm to count irreducible unipotent Brauer characters and we verify that this algorithm is effective for exceptional adjoint groups.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of prime characteristic $p$, and $\ggg=\Lie(G)$. In this paper, we study modular representations of the reductive Lie algebra $\ggg$ with $p$-character $χ$ of standard Levi-form associated with an index subset $I$ of simple roots. With aid of support variety theory we prove a theorem that a $U_χ(\ggg)$-module is projective if and only if it is a strong "tilting" module, i.e. admitting both $\cz_Q$- and $\cz^{w^I}_Q$-filtrations (to see Theorem \ref{THMFORINV}). Then by analogy of the arguments in \cite{…
In this paper we study the complex representations of reductive groups over local non-Archimedean fields. We use the building of the reductive group to give upper-bounds for the absolute value of the character of an admissible representation and for the Weyl integration formula for certain regular elements. The upper-bound for the character of a representation is based on the alternative description, depending on the building, of the character as given by R. Meyer and M. Solleveld [MS12]. Once the character and the Weyl integration formula are related to the building, the upper-bounds will fol…
We propose a definition of characters in the context of Schneider-Teitelbaum's theory of locally analytic representations of p-adic reductive groups. This character will be a function on a compact subgroup of a maximal torus of the reductive group in question. As an example we treat the locally analytic principal series of SL(2,Q_p).
Let $G_\cpl$ be a connected complex reductive Lie group, and $G$ be a real form. Let $(π,V)$ be a finite-dimensional irreducible representation of $G$. Assume $(π,V)$ admits a $G$ invariant hermitian form. {In \cite{Signature-of-a-rep-of-reductive}, an analog of the Weyl dimension formula that instead computes the signature of the invariant form for finite dimensional representations of complex Lie groups is given. The goal of this paper is to give a short alternate proof as an application of a more general twisted character theory of \cite{Dirac-Index-and-Twisted-Characters}.
This article is concerned with the relative McKay conjecture for finite reductive groups. Let G be a connected reductive group defined over the finite field F_q of characteristic p>0 with corresponding Frobenius map F. We prove that if the F-coinvariants of the component group of the center of G has prime order and if p is a good prime for G, then the relative McKay conjecture holds for G at the prime p. In particular, this conjecture is true for G^F in defining characteristic for G a simple and simply-connected group of type B_n, C_n, E_6 and E_7. Our main tools are the theory of Gelfand-Grae…
We use coefficient systems on the affine Bruhat-Tits building to study admissible representations of reductive p-adic groups in characteristic not equal to p. We show that the character function is locally constant and provide explicit neighbourhoods of constancy. We estimate the growth of the subspaces of invariants for compact open subgroups.
We prove the existence of Bialynicki-Birula decomposition for Kempf monoids, which is a large class that contains for example monoids with reductive unit group in all characteristics. This extends the existence statements from previous works of Alper-Hall-Rydh and Jelisiejew-Sienkiewicz.
The aim of this paper is to describe the irregular locus of the commuting variety of a reductive symmetric Lie algebra. More precisely, we want to enlighten a remark of Popov. In [Po], the irregular locus of the commuting variety of any reductive Lie algebra is described and its codimension is computed. This provides a bound for the codimension of the singular locus of this commuting variety. [Po, Remark 1.13] suggests that the arguments and methods of [Po] are suitable for obtaining analogous results in the symmetric setting. We show that some difficulties arise in this case and we obtain som…
We study three fundamental topics in the representation theory of disconnected algebraic groups whose identity component is reductive: (i) the classification of irreducible representations; (ii) the existence and properties of Weyl and dual Weyl modules; and (iii) the decomposition map relating representations in characteristic $0$ and those in characteristic $p$ (for groups defined over discrete valuation rings). For each of these topics, we obtain natural generalizations of the well-known results for connected reductive groups.
This paper is an introduction, in a simplified setting, to Lusztig's theory of character sheaves. It develops a notion of character sheaves on reductive Lie algebras which is more general then such notion of Lusztig, and closer to Lusztig's theory of character sheaves on groups. The development is self contained and independent of the characteristic $p$ of the ground field. The results for Lie algebras are then used to give simple and uniform proofs for some of Lusztig's results on groups.
In this paper an integral transform between spaces of nonstandard test functions on the affine space of dimension n is constructed. The integral transform satisfies a summation formula of Poisson type, which is derived from an analogue of the Arthur-Selberg trace formula for the Lie algebra of n by n matrices.
Given a connected reductive group $\tilde{G}$ over a finite field $k$, and a semisimple $k$-automorphism $\varepsilon$ of $\tilde{G}$ of finite order, let $G$ denote the connected part of the group of $\varepsilon$-fixed points. Then there exists a lifting from packets of representations of $G(k)$ to packets for $\tilde{G}(k)$. In the case of Deligne-Lusztig representations, we show that this lifting satisfies a character relation analogous to that of Shintani.
We prove that the nilpotent commuting variety of a reductive Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of good characteristic is equidimensional. In characteristic zero, this confirms a conjecture of Vladimir Baranovsky. As a by-product, we obtain tat the punctual (local) Hilbert scheme parametrising the ideals of colength $n$ in $k[[X,Y]]$ is irreducible over any algebraically closed field $k$.
In this paper we prove two formulas for the characters of representations of reductive groups. Both express the character of a representation in terms of the same geometric data attached to it. When specialized to the case of a compact Lie group, one of them reduces to Kirillov's character formula in the compact case, and the other, to an application of the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula to the Borel-Weil realization of the representation.
The simplicity of the induced modules for reductive Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic is studied, and a necessary and sufficient condition for the simplicity is given.
In this paper we propose a construction of generic character sheaves on reductive groups over finite local rings at even levels, whose characteristic functions are higher Deligne--Lusztig characters when the parameters are generic. We formulate a conjecture on the simple perversity of these complexes, and we prove it in the level two case (thus generalised a result of Lusztig from the function field case). We then discuss the induction and restriction functors, as well as the Frobenius reciprocity, based on the perversity.
We compute the characters of many supercuspidal representations of reductive p-adic groups. Specifically, we deal with representations that arise via Yu's construction from data satisfying a certain compactness condition. Each character is expressed in terms of a depth-zero character of a smaller group, the (linear) characters appearing in Yu's construction, Fourier transforms of orbital integrals, and certain signs and cardinalities that are described explicitly in terms of the datum associated to the representation and of the element at which the character is evaluated.
We present various results on disconnected reductive groups, in particular about the characteristic 0 representation theory of such groups over finite fields.
We prove a generalization of Harish-Chandra's character orthogonality relations for discrete series to arbitrary Harish-Chandra modules for real reductive Lie groups. This result is an analogue of a conjecture by Kazhdan for $\mathfrak p$-adic reductive groups proved by Bezrukavnikov, and Schneider and Stuhler.
The aim of this paper is to give an exposition of recent progress on the determination of the unitarizable Langlands quotients of minimal principal series for reductive groups over the real or p-adic fields in characteristic 0.
In this paper, we begin with the classification of Harish-Chandra imprimitive representations in non-defining characteristic. We recall the connection of this problem to certain generalizations of Iwahori-Hecke algebras and show that Harish-Chandra induction is compatible with the Morita equivalence by Bonnafé and Rouquier, thus reducing the classification problem to quasi-isolated blocks. Afterwards, we consider imprimitivity of unipotent representations of certain classical groups. In the case of general linear and unitary groups, our reduction methods then lead to results for arbitrary Lusz…
This is a preliminary version of the first chapter of a book project on the character theory of finite groups of Lie type. It provides the foundations from the general theory of reductive algebraic groups over a finite field.
We give an algorithm for computing the irreducible admissible representations of a real reductive group with regular integral infinitesimal character. This algorithm has been implemented on a computer, as part of the Atlas of Lie Groups and Representations project.
In a previous paper, "Generalized Green functions and unipotent classes for finite reductive groups, I", we have determined certain unknown scalars involved in the algorithm of computing generalized Green functions in the case of SL_n. In this paper, we consider a similar problem for the case of classical groups Sp_{2n}, SO_N with arbitrary characteristic. Our result enables us, in particular, to compute Green functions in bad characteristic case, which was not known before.
Let $(G,G')$ be a reductive dual pair of a symplectic group and an orthogonal group over a finite field of odd characteristic. The Howe correspondence establishes a correspondence between a subset of irreducible characters of $G$ and a subset of irreducible characters of $G'$. The Lusztig correspondence is a bijection between the Lusztig series indexed by the conjugacy class of a semisimple element $s$ in the connected component $(G^*)^0$ of the dual group of $G$ and the set of irreducible unipotent characters of the centralizer of $s$ in $G^*$. In this paper, we prove the commutativity (up to…
Lusztig's algorithm of computing generalized Green functions of reductive groups involves an ambiguity of certain scalars. In this paper, for reductive groups of classical type with arbitrary characteristic, we determine those scalars explicitly, and eliminate the ambiguity. Our results imply that all the generalized Green functions of classical type are computable.
Let G be a connected reductive group over a field of characteristic zero, and consider an orthogonal representation of G. We give a simple criterion for whether the representation lifts to the spin group, in terms of the highest weights of the irreducible constituents of the representation.
We show that the Morita Frobenius number of the blocks of the alternating groups, the finite groups of Lie type in describing characteristic, and the Ree and Suzuki groups is 1. We also show that the Morita Frobenius number of almost all of the unipotent blocks of the finite groups of Lie type in non-defining characteristic is 1, and that in the remaining cases it is at most 2.
Let $\widehat{G}$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field with a pinning-preserving outer automorphism $σ$. Jantzen's twining character formula relates the trace of the action of $σ$ on a highest-weight representation $V_μ$ of $\widehat{G}$ to the character of a corresponding highest-weight representation $(V_σ)_μ$ of a related group $\widehat{G^{σ, \circ}}$. This paper extends the methods of Hong's geometric proof for the case $\widehat{G}$ is adjoint, to prove that the formula holds for all connected reductive groups, and examines the role of additional hypotheses. …
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected reductive group with connected center defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$, with Frobenius morphism F. Given an irreducible complex character $χ$ of $\mathbf{G}^F$ with its Jordan decomposition, and a Galois automorphism $σ\in \mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$, we give the Jordan decomposition of the image ${^σχ}$ of $χ$ under the action of $σ$ on its character values.
The nilpotent bicone of a finite dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra g is the subset of elements in g x g whose subspace generated by the components is contained in the nilpotent cone of g. The main result of this note is that the nilpotent bicone is a complete intersection. This affirmatively answers a conjecture of Kraft-Wallach concerning the nullcone. In addition, we introduce and study the characteristic submodule of g. The properties of the nilpotent bicone and the characteristic submodule are known to be very important for the understanding of the commuting variety and its ideal o…
Let G_R be a real reductive Lie group acting on a manifold M. M.Kashiwara and W.Schmid in [KaSchm] constructed representations of G_R using sheaves and quasi-G_R-equivariant D-modules on M. In this article we prove an integral character formula for these representations (Theorem 1). Our main tools will be the integral localization formula recently proved in [L3] and the integral character formula proved by W.Schmid and K.Vilonen in [SchV2] (originally established by W. Rossmann in [Ro]) in the important special case when the manifold M is the flag variety of the complexified Lie algebra of G_R…
This paper contains an exposition of the theory of character sheaves for reductive groups and some attempts to extend it to other cases: unipotent groups, reductive groups modulo the unipotent radical of a parabolic.
Cuspidal representations of a reductive p-adic group G over a field of characteristic different from p are relatively injective and projective with respect to extensions that split by a U-equivariant linear map for any subgroup U that is compact modulo the centre. The category of smooth representations over a field whose characteristic does not divide the pro-order of G is the product of the subcategories of cuspidal representations and of subrepresentations of direct sums of parabolically induced representations.
In this paper, I construct noncompact analogs of the Chern classes of equivariant vector bundles over complex reductive groups. For the tangent bundle, these Chern classes yield an adjunction formula for the Euler characteristic of complete intersections in reductive groups. In the case where the complete intersection is a curve, this formula gives an explicit answer for the Euler characteristic and the genus of the curve.
We present a unified parametrisation of $\ell$-blocks of quasi-simple finite groups of Lie type in non-defining characteristic via Lusztig's induction functor in terms of $e$-Jordan-cuspidal pairs and $e$-Jordan quasi-central cuspidal pairs.
We show that a connected split reductive group G over a field of characteristic 0 is uniquely determined up to isomorphism by specifying a maximal torus T of G, the set of isomorphism classes of irreducible representations of G, and the character homomorphism from the Grothendieck ring of G to that of T.
A connected algebraic group Q defined over a field of characteristic zero is quasi-reductive if there is an element of its dual of reductive type, that is such that the quotient of its stabiliser by the centre of Q is a reductive subgroup of GL(q), where q=Lie(Q). Due to results of M. Duflo, coadjoint representation of a quasi-reductive Q possesses a so called maximal reductive stabiliser and knowing this subgroup, defined up to a conjugation in Q, one can describe all coadjoint orbits of reductive type. In this paper, we consider quasi-reductive parabolic subalgebras of simple complex Lie alg…
Let $G$ be a simple simply-connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with $\mathfrak{g}={\rm Lie}(G)$. We discuss various properties of nilpotent orbits in $\mathfrak{g}$, which have previously only been considered over $\mathbb{C}$. Using a combination of theoretical and computational methods, we extend to positive characteristic various calculations of de Graaf with nilpotent orbits in exceptional Lie algebras. In particular, we classify those orbits which are reachable, those which satisfy a certain related condition due to Panyushev, and deter…
With a view to determining character values of finite reductive groups at unipotent elements, we prove a number of results concerning inner products of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters with characteristic functions of character sheaves, here called Lusztig functions. These are used to determine projections of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters to the space of unipo- tent characters, and to the space of characters with a given wave front set. Such projections are expressed largely in terms of Weyl group data. We show how the values of characters at their unipotent support or wave front se…
Let $\mathcal{O}_2$ and $\mathcal{O}'_2$ be two distinct finite local rings of length two with residue field of characteristic $p$. Let $\mathbb{G}(\mathcal{O}_2)$ and $\mathbb{G}(\mathcal{O}'_2)$, be the group of points of any reductive group scheme $\mathbb{G}$ over $\mathbb{Z}$ such that $p$ is very good for $\mathbb{G} \times \mathbb{F}_q$. We prove that there exists an isomorphism of group algebra $K[\mathbb{G}(\mathcal{O}_2)] \cong K[\mathbb{G}(\mathcal{O}'_2)]$, where $K$ is a sufficiently large field of characteristic different from $p$.
