We present a unified parametrisation of $\ell$-blocks of quasi-simple finite groups of Lie type in non-defining characteristic via Lusztig's induction functor in terms of $e$-Jordan-cuspidal pairs and $e$-Jordan quasi-central cuspidal pairs.
Let $G$ be a non-connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ and let $D$ be a connected component of $G$. We investigate Jordan classes of $D$ and we obtain a description of the regular part of the closure of a Jordan class in terms of induction of $G^{\circ}$-orbits. We use this result to show that Lusztig strata in a non-connected reductive algebraic group are locally closed.
Let $(G,G')$ be a reductive dual pair of a symplectic group and an orthogonal group over a finite field of odd characteristic. The Howe correspondence establishes a correspondence between a subset of irreducible characters of $G$ and a subset of irreducible characters of $G'$. The Lusztig correspondence is a bijection between the Lusztig series indexed by the conjugacy class of a semisimple element $s$ in the connected component $(G^*)^0$ of the dual group of $G$ and the set of irreducible unipotent characters of the centralizer of $s$ in $G^*$. In this paper, we prove the commutativity (up to…
Following Lusztig, we consider a Coxeter group $W$ together with a weight function. Geck showed that the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells of $W$ are compatible with parabolic subgroups. In this paper, we generalize this argument to some subsets of $W$ which may not be parabolic subgroups. We obtain two applications: we show that under specific technical conditions on the parameters, the cells of a certain finite parabolic subgroup of $W$ are cells in the whole group, and we decompose the affine Weyl group $\tilde{G}_{2}$ into left and two-sided cells for a whole class of weight functions.
We prove that generic higher Deligne-Lusztig representations over truncated formal power series are non-nilpotent, when the parameters are non-trivial on the biggest reduction kernel of the centre; we also establish a relation between the orbits of higher Deligne-Lusztig representations of $\mathrm{SL}_n$ and of $\mathrm{GL}_n$. Then we introduce a combinatorial analogue of Deligne-Lusztig construction for general and special linear groups over local rings; this construction generalises the higher Deligne--Lusztig representations and affords all the nilpotent orbit representations, and for $\m…
In 1979 Lusztig proposed a conjectural construction of supercuspidal representations of reductive p-adic groups, which is similar to the well known construction of Deligne and Lusztig in the setting of finite reductive groups. We present a general method for explicitly calculating the representations arising from Lusztig's construction and illustrate it with several examples. The techniques we develop also provide background for the author's joint work with Weinstein on a purely local and explicit proof of the local Langlands correspondence.
In a previous paper it was shown that a certain family of varieties suggested by Lusztig, is not enough to construct all irreducible complex representations of reductive groups over finite rings coming from the ring of integers in a local field, modulo a power of the maximal ideal. In this paper we define a generalisation of Lusztig's varieties, corresponding to an extension of the maximal unramified extension of the local field. We show in a particular case that all irreducible representations appear in the cohomology of some extended variety. We conclude with a discussion about reformulation…
Lusztig proved the compatibility of induction functors and restriction functors for Lusztig's perverse sheaves. Fang-Lan-Xiao established a categorification of Green's formula and gave a sheaf-level proof of this compatibility for all semisimple complexes. As an application, we study the relation between induction functors and derivation functors, which is a kind of special restriction functors.
This paper is an introduction, in a simplified setting, to Lusztig's theory of character sheaves. It develops a notion of character sheaves on reductive Lie algebras which is more general then such notion of Lusztig, and closer to Lusztig's theory of character sheaves on groups. The development is self contained and independent of the characteristic $p$ of the ground field. The results for Lie algebras are then used to give simple and uniform proofs for some of Lusztig's results on groups.
Lusztig has given a construction of certain representations of reductive groups over finite local principal ideal rings of characteristic p, extending the construction of Deligne and Lusztig of representations of reductive groups over finite fields. We generalize Lusztig's results to reductive groups over arbitrary finite local rings. This generalization uses the Greenberg functor and the theory of group schemes over Artinian local rings.
The wavefront set is a fundamental invariant of an admissible representation arising from the Harish-Chandra-Howe local character expansion. In this paper, we give a precise formula for the wavefront set of an irreducible representation of real infinitesimal character in Lusztig's category of unipotent representations in terms of the Deligne-Langlands-Lusztig correspondence. Our formula generalizes the main result of arXiv:2112.14354, where this formula was obtained in the Iwahori-spherical case. We deduce that for any irreducible unipotent representation with real infinitesimal character, the…
We prove a conjecture of Broue about the Jordan decomposition of blocks of finite reductive groups. We show that a block of a finite connected reductive group, in non-describing characteristic, is Morita-equivalent to a quasi-isolated block of a Levi subgroup. This involves showing that some local system over a Deligne-Lusztig variety has its mod l cohomology concentrated in one degree. We reduce this question to a question about tamely ramified local systems by proving that the category of perfect complexes for the group is generated by the images of the Deligne-Lusztig functors. Then, we des…
In some recent work, Lusztig outlined a generalisation of the construction of Deligne and Lusztig to reductive groups over finite rings coming from the ring of integers in a local field, modulo some power of the maximal ideal. Lusztig conjectures that all irreducible representations of these groups are contained in the cohomology of a certain family of varieties. We show that, contrary to what was expected, there exist representations that cannot be realised by the varieties given by Lusztig. Moreover, we show how the remaining representations in the case under consideration can be realised in…
The famous Kazhdan-Lusztig Conjecture of the 1970s states that the multiplicity of an irreducible composition factor of a Verma module can be computed by evaluating Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials at 1. Thus the character of a Verma module is a linear combination of characters of irreducible highest weight modules where the coefficients in the linear combination are Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials evaluated at 1. Kazhdan-Lusztig showed that inverting and writing the character of an irreducible highest weight module as a linear combination of characters of Verma modules, the coefficients in the linear …
Recently, a strong exponential character bound has been established in [3] for all elements $g \in \mathbf{G}^F$ of a finite reductive group $\mathbf{G}^F$ which satisfy the condition that the centraliser $C_{\mathbf{G}}(g)$ is contained in a $(\mathbf{G},F)$-split Levi subgroup $\mathbf{M}$ of $\mathbf{G}$ and that $\mathbf{G}$ is defined over a field of good characteristic. In this paper, assuming a weak version of Lusztig's conjecture relating irreducible characters and characteristic functions of character sheaves holds, we considerably generalize this result by removing the condition that…
To any connected reductive group G over a non-archimedean local field F (of characteristic p > 0) and to any maximal torus T of G, we attach a family of extended affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties (and families of torsors over them) over the residue field of F. This construction generalizes affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties of Rapoport, which are attached only to unramified tori of G. Via this construction, we can attach to any maximal torus T of G and any character of T a representation of G. This procedure should conjecturally realize the automorphic induction from T to G. For G = GL_2, we prov…
A canonical basis in the sense of Lusztig is a basis of a free module over a ring of Laurent polynomials that is invariant under a certain semilinear involution and is obtained from a fixed "standard basis" through a triangular base change matrix with polynomial entries whose constant terms equal the identity matrix. Among the better known examples of canonical bases are the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of Iwahori-Hecke algebras, Lusztig's canonical basis of quantum groups and the Howlett-Yin basis of induced $W$-graph modules. This paper has two major theoretical goals: First to show that having bas…
Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k. We consider the strata in G defined by Lusztig as fibers of a map given in terms truncated induction of Springer representations. We extend to arbitrary characteristic the following two results: Lusztig's strata are locally closed and the irreducible components of a stratum X are those sheets for the G-action on itself that are contained in X.
In this paper we construct certain irreducible infinite dimensional representations of algebraic groups with Frobenius maps. In particular, a few classical results of Steinberg and Deligne & Lusztig on complex representations of finite groups of Lie type are extended to reductive algebraic groups with Frobenius maps.
Ariki and Ginzburg, after the previous work of Zelevinsky on orbital varieties, proved that multiplicities in a total parabolically induced representations are given by the value at q=1 of Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials associated to the symmetric groups. In my thesis I explore the geometry of orbital varieties and I essentially obtain two important results: - first I prove a conjecture of Zelevinksy on a property of independence of total parabolically induced representations. - More crucially I give a strategy to compute multiplicities in general parabolically induced representations using the p…
Lusztig's algorithm of computing generalized Green functions of reductive groups involves an ambiguity of certain scalars. In this paper, for reductive groups of classical type with arbitrary characteristic, we determine those scalars explicitly, and eliminate the ambiguity. Our results imply that all the generalized Green functions of classical type are computable.
Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field k of very good characteristic. The Lusztig-Vogan bijection is a bijection between the set of dominant weights for G and the set of irreducible G-equivariant vector bundles on nilpotent orbits, conjectured by Lusztig and Vogan independently, and constructed in full generality by Bezrukavnikov. In characteristic 0, this bijection is related to the theory of 2-sided cells in the affine Weyl group, and plays a key role in the proof of the Humphreys conjecture on support varieties of tilting modules for quantum groups at a root of unity.…
We prove new results in generalized Harish-Chandra theory providing a description of the so-called Brauer--Lusztig blocks in terms of the information encoded in the $\ell$-adic cohomology of Deligne--Lusztig varieties. Then, we propose new conjectures for finite reductive groups by considering geometric analogues of the $\ell$-local structures that lie at the heart of the local-global counting conjectures. For large primes, our conjectures coincide with the counting conjectures thanks to a connection established by Broué, Fong and Srinivasan between $\ell$-structures and their geometric counte…
The determination of scalars involved in Lusztig's conjecture for finite reductive groups $G(F_q)$ was achieved by Waldspurger in the case of symplectic groups or orthogonal groups, under the condition that $p,q$ are large enough. Here $p$ is the characteristic of the finite field $F_q$. In this paper, we determine the scalars in the case of symplectic groups with $p = 2$, by applying the theory of symmetric spaces over a finite field due to Kawanaka and Lusztig. We also obtain a partial result in the case of special orthogonal groups with $p = 2$.
In this paper we propose a construction of generic character sheaves on reductive groups over finite local rings at even levels, whose characteristic functions are higher Deligne--Lusztig characters when the parameters are generic. We formulate a conjecture on the simple perversity of these complexes, and we prove it in the level two case (thus generalised a result of Lusztig from the function field case). We then discuss the induction and restriction functors, as well as the Frobenius reciprocity, based on the perversity.
Let $K$ be a local non-Archimedean field of positive characteristic and let $L$ be the degree-$n$ unramified extension of $K$. Via the local Langlands and Jacquet-Langlands correspondences, to each sufficiently generic multiplicative character of $L$, one can associate an irreducible representation of the multiplicative group of the central division algebra $D$ of invariant $1/n$ over $K$. In 1979, Lusztig proposed a cohomological construction of supercuspidal representations of reductive $p$-adic groups analogous to Deligne-Lusztig theory for finite reductive groups. In this paper we prove th…
The Lusztig correspondence is a bijective mapping between the Lusztig series indexed by the conjugacy class of a semisimple element $s$ in the connected component $(G^*)^0$ of the dual group of $G$ and the set of irreducible unipotent characters of the centralizer of $s$ in $G^*$. In this article we discuss the unicity and ambiguity of such a bijective correspondence. In particular, we show that the Lusztig correspondence for a classical group can be made to be unique if we require it to be compatible with the parabolic induction and the finite theta correspondence.
The algorithm of computing generalized Green functions of a finite reductive group contains some unkonwn scalars occuring from the F_q structure of irreducible local systems on unipotent classes on G. In this paper, we determine such scalars in the case where G = SL_n with Frobenius map F of split or non-split type. In the case where F is of non-split type, we use the theory of graded Hecke algebras and their representations on the equivariant homology group due to Lusztig.
In this article, we study the étale cohomology of the compactification of Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to a Coxeter element. We prove a result for the integral coefficients in the case of general linear group $GL_d$, and we conjecture that the similar result holds for general reductive groups.
In the last section of the paper "Generalized induction of Kazhdan-Lusztig cells" and in "Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in affine Weyl groups of rank 2" the author described the partition into Kazhdan-Lusztig cells of the affine Weyl groups of rank 2 for all choices of parameters. The proof of these results relies on some explicit computations with GAP. In these notes we give some details of these computations.
Let $G$ be a reductive $p$-adic group. We give a short proof of the fact that $G$ always admits supercuspidal complex representations. This result has already been established by A. Kret using the Deligne-Lusztig theory of representations of finite groups of Lie type. Our argument is of a different nature and is self-contained. It is based on the Harish-Chandra theory of cusp forms and it ultimately relies on the existence of elliptic maximal tori in $G$.
We establish a transfer of unitarity for a Bernstein component of the category of smooth representations of a reductive p-adic group to the associated Hecke algebra, in the framework of the theory of types, whenever the Hecke algebra is an affine Hecke algebra with geometric parameters, in the sense of Lusztig (possibly extended by a group of automorphisms of the root datum). It is known that there is a large class of such examples (detailed in the paper). As a consequence, we establish relations between the unitary duals of different groups, in the spirit of endoscopy.
In 1979, Lusztig proposed a cohomological construction of supercuspidal representations of reductive $p$-adic groups, analogous to Deligne-Lusztig theory for finite reductive groups. In this paper we establish a new instance of Lusztig's program. Precisely, let $X$ be the $p$-adic Deligne-Lusztig ind-scheme associated to a division algebra $D$ of invariant k/n over a non-Archimedean local field $K$. We study its homology groups by establishing a Deligne-Lusztig theory for families of finite unipotent groups that arise as subquotients of $D^\times$. The homology of $X$ induces a natural corresp…
Let $G$ be a reductive group over a finite field with a maximal unipotent subgroup $U$, we consider certain sheaves on $G/U$ defined by Kazhdan and Laumon and show that their cohomology produces the cohomology of the Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We then use this comparison to give a new proof of a result of Dudas.
The Kazhdan-Lusztig parameters are important parameters in the representation theory of $p$-adic groups and affine Hecke algebras. We show that the Kazhdan-Lusztig parameters have a definite geometric structure, namely that of the extended quotient $T//W$ of a complex torus $T$ by a finite Weyl group $W$. More generally, we show that the corresponding parameters, in the principal series of a reductive $p$-adic group with connected centre, admit such a geometric structure. This confirms, in a special case, our recently formulated geometric conjecture. In the course of this study, we provide a u…
Given a connected reductive group $\tilde{G}$ over a finite field $k$, and a semisimple $k$-automorphism $\varepsilon$ of $\tilde{G}$ of finite order, let $G$ denote the connected part of the group of $\varepsilon$-fixed points. Then there exists a lifting from packets of representations of $G(k)$ to packets for $\tilde{G}(k)$. In the case of Deligne-Lusztig representations, we show that this lifting satisfies a character relation analogous to that of Shintani.
In this paper, we begin with the classification of Harish-Chandra imprimitive representations in non-defining characteristic. We recall the connection of this problem to certain generalizations of Iwahori-Hecke algebras and show that Harish-Chandra induction is compatible with the Morita equivalence by Bonnafé and Rouquier, thus reducing the classification problem to quasi-isolated blocks. Afterwards, we consider imprimitivity of unipotent representations of certain classical groups. In the case of general linear and unitary groups, our reduction methods then lead to results for arbitrary Lusz…
We give a self-contained account of a construction due to Rossmann which lifts Springer's action of a Weyl group on the cohomology of a Springer fiber to an action on its homotopy type. We use this construction to produce a generalization of an "induction theorem" of Alvis and Lusztig, which relates the Springer representations attached to a reductive group to those attached to a Levi subgroup. Our generalization applies to more general centralizers and to representations of Weyl groups on mod p cohomology.
In this paper we study higher Deligne--Lusztig representations of reductive groups over finite quotients of discrete valuation rings. At even levels, we show that these geometrically constructed representations coincide with certain induced representations in the generic case; this gives a solution to a problem raised by Lusztig. In particular, we determine the dimensions of these representations. As an immediate application we verify a conjecture of Letellier for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ and $\mathrm{GL}_3$.
Based on results of Digne-Michel-Lehrer (2003) we give two formulae for two-variable Green functions attached to Lusztig induction in a finite reductive group. We present applications to explicit computation of these Green functions, to conjectures of Malle and Rotilio, and to scalar products between Lusztig inductions of Gelfand-Graev characters.
We introduce graded Hecke algebras H based on a (possibly disconnected) complex reductive group G and a cuspidal local system L on a unipotent orbit of a Levi subgroup M of G. These generalize the graded Hecke algebras defined and investigated by Lusztig for connected G. We develop the representation theory of the algebras H. obtaining complete and canonical parametrizations of the irreducible, the irreducible tempered and the discrete series representations. All the modules are constructed in terms of perverse sheaves and equivariant homology, relying on work of Lusztig. The parameters come d…
In this paper it is shown that the wave front set of a direct integral of singular, irreducible representations of a real, reductive algebraic group is contained in the singular set. Combining this result with the results of the first paper in this series, the author obtains asymptotic results on the occurrence of tempered representations in induction and restriction problems for real, reductive algebraic groups.
For a reductive group G, we study the Drinfeld-Gaitsgory functor of the category of conjugation-equivariant D-modules on G. We show that this functor is an equivalence of categories, and that it has a filtration with layers expressed via parabolic induction of parabolic restriction. We use this to provide a conceptual definition of the Deligne-Lusztig involution on the set of isomorphism classes of irreducible character D-modules, which was defined previously in [Lu1, section 15].
Irreducibility results for parabolic induction of representations of the general linear group over a local non-archimedean field can be formulated in terms of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of type $A$. Spurred by these results and some computer calculations, we conjecture that certain alternating sums of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials known as parabolic Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials satisfy properties analogous to those of the ordinary ones.
According to Kazhdan-Lusztig and Ginzburg, the Hecke algebra of an affine Weyl group is identified with the equivariant $K$-group of Steinberg's triple variety. The $K$-group is equipped with a filtration indexed by closed $G$-stable subvarieties of the nilpotent variety, where $G$ is the corresponding reductive algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper we will show in the case of type $A$ that the filtration is compatible with the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of the Hecke algebra.
