We consider uniformly rotating incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. We study the suppression of vertical gradients of Lagrangian displacement ("vertical" refers to the direction of the rotation axis). We employ a formalism that relates the total vorticity to the gradient of the back-to-labels map (the inverse Lagrangian map, for inviscid flows, a diffusive analogue for viscous flows). The results include a nonlinear version of the Taylor-Proudman theorem: in a steady solution of the rotating Euler equations, two fluid material points which were initially on a vertical vortex line, will perpetually maintain their vertical separation unchanged. For more general situations, including unsteady flows, we obtain bounds for the vertical gradients of the Lagrangian displacement that vanish linearly with the maximal local Rossby number.
We study a possibility of existence of localized two-dimensional structures, both smooth and non-smooth, that can move without significant change of their shape in a leading stream of compressible barotropic fluid on a rotating plane.
In this paper a rotating two-fluid model for the propagation of internal waves is introduced. The model can be derived from a rotating-fluid problem by including gravity effects or from a nonrotating one by adding rotational forces in the dispersion balance. The physical regime of validation is discussed and mathematical properties of the new system, concerning well-posedness, conservation laws and existence of solitary-wave solutions, are analyzed.
We investigate the equations of anisotropic axisymmetric incompressible viscous fluids in the exterior of a cylinder of $\R^3$, rotating around an inhomogeneous vector $B(t, r)$. We prove uniform local existence with respect to the Rossby number in suitable anisotropic Sobolev spaces. We also obtain the propagation of the isotropic Sobolev regularity.
We consider a singular limit problem for the Navier-Stokes system of a rotating compressible fluid, where the Rossby and Mach numbers tend simultaneously to zero. The limit problem is identified as the 2-D Navier-Stokes system in the ``horizontal'' variables containing an extra term that accounts for compressibility in the original system.
We consider the equations governing incompressible, viscous fluids in three space dimensions, rotating around an inhomogeneous vector B(x): this is a generalization of the usual rotating fluid model (where B is constant). We prove the weak convergence of Leray--type solutions towards a vector field which satisfies the usual 2D Navier--Stokes equation in the regions of space where B is constant, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, and a heat--type equation elsewhere. The method of proof uses weak compactness arguments.
We study a triple singular limit for the scaled barotropic Navier-Stokes system modeling the motion of a rotating, compressible, and viscous fluid, where the Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to a small parameter, while the Reynolds number becomes infinite. If the fluid is confined to an infinite slab bounded above and below by two parallel planes, the limit behavior is identified as a purely horizontal motion of an incompressible inviscid fluid, the evolution of which is described by an analogue of the Euler system.
We study singular limit for scaled barotropic Euler system modelling a rotating, compressible and inviscid fluid, where Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to a small parameter $ε$. If the fluid is confined to an infinite slab, the limit behaviour is identified as a horizontal motion of an incompressible inviscid system that is analogous to the Euler system. We consider a very general class of solutions, named dissipative solution for the scaled compressible Euler systems and will show that it converges to a strong solution of that incompressible inviscid system.
It is well known that, for fast rotating fluids with the axis of rotation being perpendicular to the boundary, the boundary layer is of Ekman-type, described by a linear ODE system. In this paper we consider fast rotating fluids, with the axis of rotation being parallel to the boundary. We show that the corresponding boundary layer is describe by a nonlinear, degenerated PDE system which is similar to the 2-D Prandtl system. Finally, we prove the well-posedness of the governing system of the boundary layer in the space of analytic functions with respect to tangential variable.
We study the singular limit of a rotating compressible fluid described by a scaled barotropic Navier-Stokes system, where the Rossby number, the Mach number and the Froude number tend to 0 in a particular mutual rate while the Reynolds number tends to infinity. The inviscid planar Euler system is identified as the limit problem. The proof is based on the application of the method of relative entropies and careful analysis of oscillatory integrals describing the propagation of Rossby-acoustic waves.
We investigate the equations of anisotropic incompressible viscous fluids in $\R^3$, rotating around an inhomogeneous vector $B(t, x_1, x_2)$. We prove the global existence of strong solutions in suitable anisotropic Sobolev spaces for small initial data, as well as uniformlocal existence result with respect to the Rossby number in the same functional spaces under the additional assumption that $B=B(t,x_1)$ or $B=B(t,x_2)$. We also obtain the propagation of the isotropic Sobolev regularity using a new refined product law.
The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-$α$ model for fast rotating geophysical fluids is considered. The Navier-Stokes-$α$ model is a nonlinear dispersive regularization of the exact Navier-Stokes equations obtained by Lagrangian averaging and tend to the Navier-Stokes equations as $α\rightarrow 0^+$. We estimate upper bounds for the dimensions of global attractors and study the dependence of the dimensions on the parameter $α$. All the estimates are uniform in $α$, and our estimate of attractor dimensions remain finite when $α\rightarrow 0^+$.
The Navier-Stokes-Coriolis system is a simple model for rotating fluids, which allows to study the influence of the Coriolis force on the dynamics of three-dimensional flows. In this paper, we consider the NSC system in an infinite three-dimensional layer delimited by two horizontal planes, with periodic boundary conditions in the vertical direction. If the angular velocity parameter is sufficiently large, depending on the initial data, we prove the existence of global, infinite-energy solutions with nonzero circulation number. We also show that these solutions converge toward two-dimensional …
We study the three-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations of rotating incompressible viscous fluids with periodic boundary conditions. The asymptotic expansions, as time goes to infinity, are derived in all Gevrey spaces for any Leray-Hopf weak solutions in terms of oscillating, exponentially decaying functions. The results are established for all non-zero rotation speeds, and for both cases with and without the zero spatial average of the solutions. Our method makes use of the Poincaré waves to rewrite the equations, and then implements the Gevrey norm techniques to deal with the resulting time…
This article is concerned with an oceanographic model describing the asymptotic behaviour of a rapidly rotating and incompressible fluid with an inhomogeneous rotation vector; the motion takes place in a thin layer. We first exhibit a stationary solution of the system which consists of an interior part and a boundary layer part. The spatial variations of the rotation vector generate strong singularities within the boundary layer, which have repercussions on the interior part of the solution. The second part of the article is devoted to the analysis of two-dimensional and three-dimensional wave…
We consider the equations for the coefficients of stationary rotating axisymmetric metrics governed by the Einstein-Euler equations, that is, the Einstein equations together with the energy-momentum tensor of a barotropic perfect fluid. Although the reduced system of equations for the potentials in the co-rotating co-ordinate system is known, we derive the system of equations for potentials in the so called zero angular momentum observer co-ordinate system. We newly give a proof of the equivalence between the reduced system and the full system of Einstein equations. It is done under the assump…
We consider a system describing the motion of an isentropic, inviscid, weakly com-pressible, fast rotating fluid in the whole space R^3 , with initial data belonging to H^s(R^3) , s \textgreater{} 5/2. We prove that the system admits a unique local strong solution in L^$\infty$([0, T ]; H^s(R^3)) , where T is independent of the Rossby and Mach numbers. Moreover, using Strichartz-type estimates, we prove that the solution is almost global, i.e. its lifespan is of the order of $ε$^(--$α$) , $α$ \textgreater{} 0, without any smallness assumption on the initial data (the initial data can even go t…

We investigate the behavior of rotating incompressible flows near a non-flat horizontal bottom. In the flat case, the velocity profile is given explicitly by a simple linear ODE. When bottom variations are taken into account, it is governed by a nonlinear PDE system, with far less obvious mathematical properties. We establish the well-posedness of this system and the asymptotic behavior of the solution away from the boundary. In the course of the proof, we investigate in particular the action of pseudo-differential operators in non-localized Sobolev spaces. Our results extend the older paper […
In this paper, we perform the fast rotation limit $\varepsilon\rightarrow0^+$ of the density-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes-Coriolis system in a thin strip $Ω_\varepsilon\,:=\,\mathbb{R}^2\times\,]-\ell_\varepsilon,\ell_\varepsilon[\,$, where $\varepsilon\in\,]0,1]$ is the size of the Rossby number and $\ell_\varepsilon>0$ for any $\varepsilon>0$. By letting $\ell_\varepsilon\longrightarrow0^+$ for $\varepsilon\rightarrow0^+$ and considering Navier-slip boundary conditions at the boundary of $Ω_\varepsilon$, we give a rigorous justification of the phenomenon of the Ekman pumping in the…
We prove that the primitive equations without vertical diffusivity are globally well-posed (if the Rossby and Froude number are sufficiently small) in suitable Sobolev anisotropic spaces. Moreover if the Rossby and Froude number tend to zero at a comparable rate the global solutions of the primitive equations converge globally to the global solutions of a suitable limit system. The space domain considered has to belong to a class of tori which is general enough to include all non-resonant tori and many resonant tori as well.
In the present paper we study a singular perturbation problem for a Navier-Stokes-Korteweg model with Coriolis force. Namely, we perform the incompressible and fast rotation asymptotics simultaneously, while we keep the capillarity coefficient constant in order to capture surface tension effects in the limit. We consider here the case of variable rotation axis: we prove the convergence to a linear parabolic-type equation with variable coefficients. The proof of the result relies on compensated compactness arguments. Besides, we look for minimal regularity assumptions on the variations of the a…
We study a singular limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes system when the Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to certain powers of a small parameter $\ep$. If the Rossby number dominates the Mach number, the limit problem is represented by the 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes system describing the horizontal motion of vertical averages of the velocity field. If they are of the same order then the limit problem turns out to be a linear, 2-D equation with a unique radially symmetric solution. The effect of the centrifugal force is taken into account.
In the present paper we study the fast rotation limit for viscous incompressible fluids with variable density, whose motion is influenced by the Coriolis force. We restrict our analysis to two dimensional flows. In the case when the initial density is a small perturbation of a constant state, we recover in the limit the convergence to the homogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (up to an additional term, due to density fluctuations). For general non-homogeneous fluids, the limit equations are instead linear, and the limit dynamics is described in terms of the vorticity and the densi…
We study a singular limit of a scaled compressible Navier--Stokes--Coriolis system driven by both a deterministic and stochastic forcing terms in three dimensions. If the Mach number is comparable to the Froude number with both proportional to say $\varepsilon\ll 1$, whereas the Rossby number scales like $\varepsilon^m$ for $m>1$ large, then we show that any family of weak martingale solution to the $3$-D randomly forced rotating compressible equation (under the influence of a deterministic centrifugal force) converges in probability, as $\varepsilon\rightarrow0$, to the $2$-D incompressible N…
