We investigate the equations of anisotropic incompressible viscous fluids in $\R^3$, rotating around an inhomogeneous vector $B(t, x_1, x_2)$. We prove the global existence of strong solutions in suitable anisotropic Sobolev spaces for small initial data, as well as uniformlocal existence result with respect to the Rossby number in the same functional spaces under the additional assumption that $B=B(t,x_1)$ or $B=B(t,x_2)$. We also obtain the propagation of the isotropic Sobolev regularity using a new refined product law.
We consider the equations governing incompressible, viscous fluids in three space dimensions, rotating around an inhomogeneous vector B(x): this is a generalization of the usual rotating fluid model (where B is constant). We prove the weak convergence of Leray--type solutions towards a vector field which satisfies the usual 2D Navier--Stokes equation in the regions of space where B is constant, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, and a heat--type equation elsewhere. The method of proof uses weak compactness arguments.
We investigate the equations of anisotropic axisymmetric incompressible viscous fluids in the exterior of a cylinder of $\R^3$, rotating around an inhomogeneous vector $B(t, r)$. We prove uniform local existence with respect to the Rossby number in suitable anisotropic Sobolev spaces. We also obtain the propagation of the isotropic Sobolev regularity.
In this paper, we construct new, uniformly-rotating solutions of the vortex sheet equation bifurcating from circles with constant vorticity amplitude. The proof is accomplished via a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction and a second order expansion of the reduced system.
We consider the Klein-Gordon system posed in an inhomogeneous medium with smooth boundary subject to a local viscoelastic damping distributed around a neighborhoodof the boundary according to the Geometric Control Condition. We show that the energy of the system goes uniformly and exponentially to zero for all initial data of finite energy taken in bounded sets of finite energy phase-space. For this purpose, refined microlocal analysis arguments are considered by exploiting ideas due to Burq and Gerard . By using sharp Carleman estimates we prove a unique continuation property for coupled syst…
In this paper, we show the existence of a family of compactly supported smooth vorticities, which are solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equation and rotate uniformly in time and space.
We show that there exists a family of analytic convex global rotating solutions for the vortex patch equations, bifurcating from ellipses. As a byproduct, the analyticity proof can also be adapted to the rotating patch solutions bifurcating from disks (also known as V-states) for both the Euler and the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation.
In this paper, we show that the only solution of the vortex sheet equation, either stationary or uniformly rotating with negative angular velocity $Ω$, such that it has positive vorticity and is concentrated in a finite disjoint union of smooth curves with finite length is the trivial one: constant vorticity amplitude supported on a union of nested, concentric circles. The proof follows a desingularization argument and a calculus of variations flavor.
This paper concerns the study of some special ordered structures in turbulent flows. In particular, a systematic and relevant methodology is proposed to construct non trivial and non radial rotating vortices with non necessarily uniform densities and with different $m$--fold symmetries, $m\ge 1$. In particular, a complete study is provided for the truncated quadratic density $(A|x|^2+B){\bf{1}}_{\mathbb{D}}(x)$, with $\mathbb{D}$ the unit disc. We exhibit different behaviors with respect to the coefficients $A$ and $B$ describing the rarefaction of bifurcating curves.
We consider a 2D rotating Bose gas described by the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) theory and investigate the properties of the ground state of the theory for rotational speeds close to the critical speed for vortex nucleation. While one could expect that the vortex distribution should be homogeneous within the condensate we prove by means of an asymptotic analysis in the strongly interacting (Thomas-Fermi) regime that it is not. More precisely we rigorously derive a formula due to Sheehy and Radzihovsky [Phys. Rev. A 70, 063620(R) (2004)] for the vortex distribution, a consequence of which is that the…
Due to the highly degeneracy and singularities of the entropy equation, the physical entropy for viscous and heat conductive polytropic gases behave singularly in the presence of vacuum and it is thus a challenge to study its dynamics. It is shown in this paper that the uniform boundedness of the entropy and the inhomogeneous Sobolev regularities of the velocity and temperature can be propagated for viscous and heat conductive gases in $\mathbb R^3$, provided that the initial vacuum occurs only at far fields with suitably slow decay of the initial density. Precisely, it is proved that for any …
We prove existence and uniform bounds for electrostatic Klein-Gordon-Maxwell systems in the inhomogeneous context of a compact Riemannian manifold when the mass potential, balanced by the phase, is small in a quantified sense.
In this paper, we consider the inviscid limit of inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations under the weak Kolmogorov hypothesis in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In particular, we first deduce the Kolmogorov-type hypothesis in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which yields the uniform bounds of $α^{th}$-order fractional derivatives of $\sqrt{ρ^μ}{\bf u}^μ$ in $L^2_x$ for some $α>0$, independent of the viscosity. The uniform bounds can provide strong convergence of $\sqrt{ρ^μ}\bf u^μ$ in $L^2$ space. This shows that the inviscid limit is a weak solution to the corresponding Euler equations.
In this paper, we study the radial symmetry properties of stationary and uniformly-rotating solutions of the 2D Euler and gSQG equations, both in the smooth setting and the patch setting. For the 2D Euler equation, we show that any smooth stationary solution with compactly supported and nonnegative vorticity must be radial, without any assumptions on the connectedness of the support or the level sets. In the patch setting, for the 2D Euler equation we show that every uniformly-rotating patch $D$ with angular velocity $Ω\leq 0$ or $Ω\geq \frac{1}{2}$ must be radial, where both bounds are sharp.…
We consider a chain of Euler-Bernoulli beams with spatial dependent mass density, modulus of elasticity and area moment which are interconnected in dissipative or conservative ways and prove uniform exponential energy decay of the coupled system for suitable dissipative boundary conditions at one end and suitable conservative boundary conditions at the other end. We thereby generalise some results of G. Chen, M.C. Delfour, A.M. Krall and G. Payre from the 1980's to the case of spatial dependence of the parameters.
We consider the inhomogeneous heat equation on the half-space $\mathbb R_{+}^{d}$ with Neumann boundary conditions. We prove a space-time Gevrey regularity of the solution, with a radius of analyticity uniform up to the boundary of the half-space. We also address the case of homogeneous Robin boundary conditions. Our results generalize the case of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions established by Kukavica and Vicol in [10].
This first part of the series treats the Maxwell equations in the exterior of a slowly rotating Kerr black hole. By performing a first-order differential operator on each extreme Newman-Penrose (N-P) scalar in a Kinnersley tetrad, the resulting equation and the Teukolsky master equation for the extreme N-P component are both in the form of an inhomogeneous \textquotedblleft{spin-weighted Fackerell-Ipser equation\textquotedblright} (SWFIE) and constitute a weakly coupled system. We first prove energy estimate and integrated local energy decay (Morawetz) estimate for this type of inhomogeneous S…
We consider the Maxwell equation in the exterior of a very slowly rotating Kerr black hole. For this system, we prove the boundedness of a positive definite energy on each hypersurface of constant $t$. We also prove the convergence of each solution to a stationary Coulomb solution. We separate a general solution into the charged, Coulomb part and the uncharged part. Convergence to the Coulomb solutions follows from the fact that the uncharged part satisfies a Morawetz estimate, i.e. that a spatially localised energy density is integrable in time. For the unchanged part, we study both the full …
The Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation with non-uniform refraction index is considered. The ill-posedness of this problem is tackled by means of the variational form of mollification. This approach is proved to be consistent, and the proposed numerical simulations are quite promising.
This second part of the series treats spin $\pm2$ components (or extreme components), that satisfy the Teukolsky master equation, of the linearized gravity in the exterior of a slowly rotating Kerr black hole. For each of these two components, after performing a first-order differential operator once and twice, the resulting equations together with the Teukolsky master equation itself constitute a linear spin-weighted wave system. An energy and Morawetz estimate for spin $\pm 2$ components is proved by treating this system. This is a first step in a joint work (Andersson et al. in Stability fo…
We consider Kerr spacetimes with parameters a and M such that |a|<< M, Kerr-Newman spacetimes with parameters |Q|<< M, |a|<< M, and more generally, stationary axisymmetric black hole exterior spacetimes which are sufficiently close to a Schwarzschild metric with parameter M>0, with appropriate geometric assumptions on the plane spanned by the Killing fields. We show uniform boundedness on the exterior for sufficiently regular solutions to the scalar homogeneous wave equation. In particular, the bound holds up to and including the event horizon. No unphysical restrictions are imposed on the beh…
