In this paper, we study the radial symmetry properties of stationary and uniformly-rotating solutions of the 2D Euler and gSQG equations, both in the smooth setting and the patch setting. For the 2D Euler equation, we show that any smooth stationary solution with compactly supported and nonnegative vorticity must be radial, without any assumptions on the connectedness of the support or the level sets. In the patch setting, for the 2D Euler equation we show that every uniformly-rotating patch $D$ with angular velocity $Ω\leq 0$ or $Ω\geq \frac{1}{2}$ must be radial, where both bounds are sharp. For the gSQG equation we obtain a similar symmetry result for $Ω\leq 0$ or $Ω\geq Ω_α$ (with the bounds being sharp), under the additional assumption that the patch is simply-connected. These results settle several open questions in [T. Hmidi, J. Evol. Equ., 15(4): 801-816, 2015] and [F. de la Hoz, Z. Hassainia, T. Hmidi, and J. Mateu, Anal. PDE, 9(7):1609-1670, 2016] on uniformly-rotating patches. Along the way, we close a question on overdetermined problems for the fractional Laplacian [R. Choksi, R. Neumayer, and I. Topaloglu, Arxiv preprint arXiv:1810.08304, 2018, Remark 1.4], which may be of independent interest. The main new ideas come from a calculus of variations point of view.
In this paper, we construct new, uniformly-rotating solutions of the vortex sheet equation bifurcating from circles with constant vorticity amplitude. The proof is accomplished via a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction and a second order expansion of the reduced system.
In this paper, we show the existence of a family of compactly supported smooth vorticities, which are solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equation and rotate uniformly in time and space.
In this paper we classify the free boundary associated to equilibrium configurations of compressible, self-gravitating fluid masses, rotating with constant angular velocity. The equilibrium configurations are all critical points of an associated functional and not necessarily minimizers. Our methods also apply to alternative models in the literature where the angular momentum per unit mass is prescribed. The typical physical model our results apply to is that of uniformly rotating white dwarf stars.
In this paper, we derive some quantitative estimates for uniformly-rotating vortex patches. We prove that if a non-radial simply-connected patch $D$ is uniformly-rotating with small angular velocity $0 < Ω\ll 1$, then the outmost point of the patch must be far from the center of rotation, with distance at least of order $Ω^{-1/2}$. For $m$-fold symmetric simply-connected rotating patches, we show that their angular velocity must be close to $\frac{1}{2}$ for $m\gg 1$ with the difference at most $O(1/m)$, and also obtain estimates on $L^{\infty}$ norm of the polar graph which parametrizes the b…
We show that there exists a family of analytic convex global rotating solutions for the vortex patch equations, bifurcating from ellipses. As a byproduct, the analyticity proof can also be adapted to the rotating patch solutions bifurcating from disks (also known as V-states) for both the Euler and the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation.
In this paper, we show that the only solution of the vortex sheet equation, either stationary or uniformly rotating with negative angular velocity $Ω$, such that it has positive vorticity and is concentrated in a finite disjoint union of smooth curves with finite length is the trivial one: constant vorticity amplitude supported on a union of nested, concentric circles. The proof follows a desingularization argument and a calculus of variations flavor.
We study the two-dimensional stationary Navier-Stokes equations describing flows around a rotating disk. The existence of unique solutions is established for any rotating speed, and qualitative effects of a large rotation are described precisely by exhibiting a boundary layer structure and an axisymmetrization of the flow.
We study the two-dimensional stationary Navier-Stokes equations describing the flows around a rotating obstacle. The unique existence of solutions and their asymptotic behavior at spatial infinity are established when the rotation speed of the obstacle and the given exterior force are sufficiently small.
We study homogenization for fully nonlinear uniformly parabolic equations in stationary ergodic spatio-temporal media from the qualitative and quantitative perspective. We show that under suitable hypotheses, solutions to fully nonlinear uniformly parabolic equations in spatio-temporal media homogenize almost surely. In addition, we obtain a rate of convergence for this homogenization in measure, assuming that the environment is strongly mixing with a prescribed rate. A general methodology to study the stochastic homogenization of uniformly elliptic equations was introduced by Caffarelli, Soug…
We consider the linearized and nonlinear stationary incompressible flow around rotating and translating body in the exterior domain B with Lipschitz boundary. We derive the pointwise estimates for the pressure in both cases. Moreover, we consider the linearized problem in a truncation domain B_R of the exterior domain B under certain artificial boundary conditions on the truncating boundary and then compare this solution with the solution in the exterior domain B to get the truncation error estimate.
We consider the large time behavior of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes flow around a rotating rigid body. Assume that the angular velocity of the body gradually increases until it reaches a small terminal one at a certain finite time and it is fixed afterwards. We then show that the fluid motion converges to a steady solution as time $t\rightarrow\infty$.
The goal of this paper is to describe in mathematical terms the effect on the ocean circulation of a random stationary wind stress at the surface of the ocean. In order to avoid singular behaviour, non-resonance hypotheses are introduced, which ensure that the time frequencies of the wind-stress are different from that of the Earth rotation. We prove a convergence result for a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Coriolis system in a bounded domain, in the asymptotic of fast rotation and vanishing vertical viscosity, and we exhibit some random and stationary boundary layer profiles. At last, an ave…
This article is devoted to stationary solutions of Euler's equation on a rotating sphere, and to their relevance to the dynamics of stratospheric flows in the atmosphere of the outer planets of our solar system and in polar regions of the Earth. For the Euler equation, under appropriate conditions, rigidity results are established, ensuring that the solutions are either zonal or rotated zonal solutions. A natural analogue of Arnold's stability criterion is proved. In both cases, the lowest mode Rossby-Haurwitz stationary solutions (more precisely, those whose stream functions belong to the sum…

The $n+1$ vortex filament problem has explicit solutions consisting of $n$ parallel filaments of equal circulation in the form of nested polygons uniformly rotating around a central filament which has circulation of opposite sign. We show that when the relation between temporal and spatial periods is fixed at certain rational numbers, these configurations have an infinite number of homographic time dependent standing wave patterns that bifurcate from these uniformly rotating central configurations.
We study the two-dimensional stationary Navier-Stokes equations with rotating effect in the whole space. The unique existence and the asymptotics of solutions are obtained without the smallness assumption on the rotation parameter.
This article establishes an algebraic error estimate for the stochastic homogenization of fully nonlinear uniformly parabolic equations in stationary ergodic spatio-temporal media. The approach is similar to that of Armstrong and Smart in the study of quantitative stochastic homogenization of uniformly elliptic equations.
