Let G be a quasisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0. We suppose that p is very good for G; since p is good, there is a bijection between the nilpotent orbits in the Lie algebra and the unipotent classes in G. If the nilpotent X in Lie(G) and the unipotent u in G correspond under this bijection, and if u has order p, we show that the partitions of ad(X) and Ad(u) are the same. When G is classical or of type G_2, we prove this result with no assumption on the order of u.
In the cases where u has order p, the result is achieved through an application of results of Seitz concerning good A_1 subgroups of G. For classical groups, the techniques are more elementary, and they lead also to a new proof of the following result of Fossum: the structure constants of the representation ring of a 1-dimensional formal group law F are independent of F.
In this paper we explore relationship between representations of a Jordan algebra $\J$ and the Lie algebra $\g$ obtained from $\J$ by the Tits-Kantor-Koecher construction. More precisely, we construct two adjoint functors $Lie :\JJ\to \ggm$ and $Jor:\ggm\to\JJ$, where $\JJ$ is the category of unital $\J$-bimodules and $\ggm$ is the category of $\g$-modules admitting a short grading. Using these functors we classify $\J$ such that its semisimple part is of Clifford type and the category $\JJ$ is tame.
A good knowledge of the Jordan canonical form (JCF) for a tensor product of `Jordan blocks' is key to understanding the actions of $p$-groups of matrices in characteristic $p$. The JCF corresponds to a certain partition which depends on the characteristic $p$, and the study of these partitions dates back to Aitken's work in 1934. Equivalently each JCF corresponds to a certain permutation $π$ introduced by Norman in 1995. These permutations $π= π(r,s,p)$ depend on the dimensions $r$, $s$ of the Jordan blocks, and on $p$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for $π(r,s,p)$ to be trivial, …
We present a unified parametrisation of $\ell$-blocks of quasi-simple finite groups of Lie type in non-defining characteristic via Lusztig's induction functor in terms of $e$-Jordan-cuspidal pairs and $e$-Jordan quasi-central cuspidal pairs.
Let $G$ be a classical group with natural module $V$ over an algebraically closed field of good characteristic. For every unipotent element $u$ of $G$, we describe the Jordan block sizes of $u$ on the irreducible $G$-modules which occur as composition factors of $V \otimes V^*$, $\wedge^2(V)$, and $S^2(V)$. Our description is given in terms of the Jordan block sizes of the tensor square, exterior square, and the symmetric square of $u$, for which recursive formulae are known.
Späth showed that the Alperin-McKay conjecture in the representation theory of finite groups holds if the so-called inductive Alperin-McKay condition holds for all finite simple groups. In a previous article, we showed that the Bonnafé-Rouquier equivalence for blocks of finite groups of Lie type can be lifted to include automorphisms of groups of Lie type. We use our results to reduce the verification of the inductive condition for groups of Lie type to quasi-isolated blocks.
The Alperin weight conjecture was reduced to simple groups by the work of Navarro, Tiep and Späth. To prove Alperin weight conjecture, it suffices to show that all finite non-abelian simple groups are BAW-good. We reduce the verification of the inductive conditons for groups of Lie type in non-defining characteristic to quasi-isolated blocks.
Let $G$ be a classical group with natural module $V$ and Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of good characteristic. For rational irreducible representations $f: G \rightarrow \operatorname{GL}(W)$ occurring as composition factors of $V \otimes V^*$, $\wedge^2(V)$, and $S^2(V)$, we describe the Jordan normal form of $\mathrm{d} f(e)$ for all nilpotent elements $e \in \mathfrak{g}$. The description is given in terms of the Jordan block sizes of the action of $e$ on $V \otimes V^*$, $\wedge^2(V)$, and $S^2(V)$, for which recursive formulae are known. Our results are…

Let $G$ be a symplectic group over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero and odd residual characteristic. Given an irreducible cuspidal representation of G, we determine its Langlands parameter (equivalently, its Jordan blocks in the language of Moeglin) in terms of the local data from which the representation is explicitly constructed, up to a possible unramified twist in each block of the parameter. We deduce a Ramification Theorem for $G$, giving a bijection between the set of endo-parameters for $G$ and the set of restrictions to wild inertia of discrete Langlands parameters …
We show the existence of a unitriangular basic set for unipotent blocks simple reductive groups of classical type in bad characteristic with some exceptions. Then,we introduce an algorithm to count irreducible unipotent Brauer characters and we verify that this algorithm is effective for exceptional adjoint groups.
An irreducible ordinary character of a finite reductive group is called quadratic unipotent if it corresponds under Jordan decomposition to a semisimple element $s$ in a dual group such that $s^2=1$. We prove that there is a bijection between, on the one hand the set of quadratic unipotent characters of $GL(n,q)$ or $U(n,q)$ for all $n \geq 0$ and on the other hand, the set of quadratic unipotent characters of $Sp(2n,q)$ for all $n \geq 0$. We then extend this correspondence to $\ell$-blocks for certain $\ell$ not dividing $q$.
Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional vector space over a field of characteristic two. As the main result of this paper, for every nilpotent element $e \in \mathfrak{sl}(V)$, we describe the Jordan normal form of $e$ on the $\mathfrak{sl}(V)$-modules $\wedge^2(V)$ and $S^2(V)$. In the case where $e$ is a regular nilpotent element, we are able to give a closed formula. We also consider the closely related problem of describing, for every unipotent element $u \in \operatorname{SL}(V)$, the Jordan normal form of $u$ on $\wedge^2(V)$ and $S^2(V)$. A recursive formula for the Jordan block sizes of $u$ on…
Let T be an involution of the finite dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra g and g=k+p be the associated Cartan decomposition. Denote by K the adjoint group of k. The K-module p is the union of the subsets p^{(m)}={x | dim K.x =m}, indexed by integers m, and the K-sheets of (g,T) are the irreducible components of the p^{(m)}. The sheets can be, in turn, written as a union of so-called Jordan K-classes. We introduce conditions in order to describe the sheets and Jordan K-classes in terms of Slodowy slices. When g is of classical type, the K-sheets are shown to be smooth; if g=gl_N a complet…
As a step to establish the blockwise Alperin weight conjecture for all finite groups, we verify the inductive blockwise Alperin weight condition introduced by Navarro--Tiep and Späth for simple groups of Lie type $\mathsf A$, split or twisted. Key to the proofs is to reduce the verification of the inductive condition to the isolated (that means unipotent) blocks, using the Jordan decomposition for blocks of finite reductive groups given by Bonnafé, Dat and Rouquier.
We generalise statements known about Springer fibres associated to nilpotents with 2 Jordan blocks to Spaltenstein varieties. We study the geometry of generalised irreducible components (i.e. Bialynicki-Birula cells) and their pairwise intersections. In particular we develop a graphical calculus which encodes their structure as iterated fibre bundles with CP^1 as base spaces and compute their cohomology. At the end we present a connection with coloured cobordisms generalising a construction of Khovanov and Stroppel.
It is well-known that a nilpotent n by n matrix B is determined up to conjugacy by a partition of n formed by the sizes of the Jordan blocks of B. We call this partition the Jordan type of B. We obtain partial results on the following problem: for any partition P of n describe the type Q(P) of a generic nilpotent matrix commuting with a given nilpotent matrix of type P. A conjectural description for Q(P) was given by P. Oblak and restated by L. Khatami. In this paper we prove "half" of this conjecture by showing that this conjectural type is less than or equal to Q(P) in the dominance order on…
The Jordan type of a nilpotent matrix is the partition giving the sizes of its Jordan blocks. We study pairs of partitions $(P,Q)$, where $Q={\mathcal Q}(P)$ is the Jordan type of a generic nilpotent matrix A commuting with a nilpotent matrix B of Jordan type $ P$. T. Košir and P. Oblak have shown that $Q$ has parts that differ pairwise by at least two. Such partitions, which are also known as "super distinct" or "Rogers-Ramanujan", are exactly those that are stable or "self-large" in the sense that ${\mathcal Q}(Q)=Q$. In 2012 P. Oblak formulated a conjecture concerning the cardinality of the…
