Let V be the vector space of all skew-symmetric (non-associative) complex algebras of dimension n and L the algebraic subset of V of all Lie algebras. We consider the moment map for the action of GL(n) on the projective space P(V) and study the critical points of the functional F:square norm of the moment map, in order to understand the stratification of L defined by the negative gradient flow of F.
We obtain a description of the critical points which lie in L in terms of those which are nilpotent, as well as the minima and maxima of F on L. A characterization of the critical points modulo isomorphism, as the finite union of categorical quotients of suitable actions is considered, and some applications to the study of L are given.
For a reductive Lie algbera over an algbraically closed field of charasteristic zero,we consider a borel subgroup $B$ of its adjoint group, a Cartan subalgebra contained inthe Lie algebra of $B$ and the closure $X$ of its orbit under $B$ in the Grassmannian. The variety $X$ plays an important role in the study of the commuting variety. In thisnote, we prove that $X$ is Gorenstein with rational singularities.
The commuting variety of a reductive Lie algebra ${\goth g}$ is the underlying variety of a well defined subscheme of $\gg g{}$. In this note, it is proved that this scheme is normal. In particular, its ideal of definition is a prime ideal.
The aim of this paper is to describe the irregular locus of the commuting variety of a reductive symmetric Lie algebra. More precisely, we want to enlighten a remark of Popov. In [Po], the irregular locus of the commuting variety of any reductive Lie algebra is described and its codimension is computed. This provides a bound for the codimension of the singular locus of this commuting variety. [Po, Remark 1.13] suggests that the arguments and methods of [Po] are suitable for obtaining analogous results in the symmetric setting. We show that some difficulties arise in this case and we obtain som…
Let g be a semisimple Lie algebra of finite dimension. The nullcone N of g is the set of (x,y) in g x g such that x and y are nilpotents and are in the same Borel sualgebra. The main result of this paper is that N is a closed and irreducible subvariety of g x g, its normalisation has rational singularities and its normalization morphism is bijective.
The nilpotent cone of a reductive Lie algebra has a desingularization given by thecotangent bundle of the flag variety. Analogously, the nullcone of a cartesianpower of the algebra has a desingularization given by a vector bundle over theflag variety. As for the nullcone, the subvariety of elements whose componentsare in a same Borel subalgebra, has a desingularization given by a vector bundle overthe flag variety. In this note, some properties of these varieties are given. Forthe study of the commuting variety, the analogous variety to the flag variety isthe closure in the Grassmannian of the…
Let g be a semisimple Lie algebra of finite dimension. The nullcone N of g is the set of (x, y) in g\timesg such that x and y are nilpotents and are in the same Borel subalgebra. The main result of this paper is that N is a closed and irreducible subvariety of g \times g whose normalization has rational singularities and such that the normalization morphism is bijective.
We construct a differential graded Lie algebra $\fg$ controlling the Poisson deformations of an affine Poisson variety. We analyse $\fg$ in the case of affine Gorenstein toric Poisson varieties. Moreover, explicit description of the second and third Hochschild cohomology groups is given for three-dimensional affine Gorenstein toric varieties.
Let g be the Lie algebra of a connected reductive group G over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p>0. Let $Z$ be the centre of the universal enveloping algebra U=U(g) of g. Its maximal spectrum is called the Zassenhaus variety of g. We show that, under certain mild assumptions on G, the field of fractions Frac(Z) of Z is G-equivariantly isomorphic to the function field of the dual space g* with twisted G-action. In particular Frac(Z) is rational. This confirms a conjecture J. Alev. Furthermore we show that Z is a unique factorisation domain, confirming a conjecture of A. Braun …
We investigate the deformations of pairs $(X,L)$, where $L$ is a line bundle on a smooth projective variety $X$, defined over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic 0. In particular, we prove that the DG-Lie algebra controlling the deformations of the pair $(X,L)$ is homotopy abelian whenever $X$ has trivial canonical bundle, and so these deformations are unobstructed.
Each choice of a Kähler class on a compact complex manifold defines an action of the Lie algebra $\slt$ on its total complex cohomology. If a nonempty set of such Kähler classes is given, then we prove that the corresponding $\slt$-copies generate a semisimple Lie algebra. We investigate the formal properties of the resulting representation and we work things out explicitly in the case of complex tori, hyperkähler manifolds and flag varieties. We pay special attention to the cases where this leads to a Jordan algebra structure or a graded Frobenius algebra.
We study certain "σ-commuting varieties" associated with a pair of commuting involutions of a semisimple Lie algebra $\g$. The usual commuting variety of $\g$ and commuting varieties related to one involution are particular cases of our construction. We develop a general theory of σ-commuting varieties and point out some cases, when they have especially good properties. We show that, for a special choice of commuting involutions, the σ-commuting variety is isomorphic to the commuting variety of a simple Jordan algebra. As a by-product of our theory, we show that if $J$ is the Jordan algebra of…
We study the shifted Poisson structure on the cochain complex C*(g) of a graded Lie algebra arising from shifted Lie bialgebra structure on g. We apply this to construct a 1-shifted Poisson structures on an infinitesimal quotient of the derived variety of complexes RCom(V) by a subgroup of the automorphisms of V, and a non-shifted Poisson structure on an appropriately defined derived variety of 1-periodic complexes, extending the standard Kirillov-Kostant Poisson structure on gl*_n. We also show that in the case of RCom(V) the 1-shifted structure is up to homotopy a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra …
Lie algebras of dimension $n$ are defined by their structure constants , which can be seen as sets of $N = n^2 (n -- 1)/2$ scalars (if we take into account the skew-symmetry condition) to which the Jacobi identity imposes certain quadratic conditions. Up to rescaling, we can consider such a set as a point in the projective space $P^{N--1}$. Suppose $n =4$, hence $N = 24$. Take a random subspace of dimension $12$ in $P^{23}$ , over the complex numbers. We prove that this subspace will contain exactly $1033$ points giving the structure constants of some four dimensional Lie algebras. Among those…
Let θbe an involution of the semisimple Lie algebra g and g=k+p be the associated Cartan decomposition. The nilpotent commuting variety of (g,θ) consists in pairs of nilpotent elements (x,y) of p such that [x,y]=0. It is conjectured that this variety is equidimensional and that its irreducible components are indexed by the orbits of p-distinguished elements. This conjecture was established by A. Premet in the case (g \times g, θ) where θ(x,y)=(y,x). In this work we prove the conjecture in a significant number of other cases.
Let G be a complex semisimple linear algebraic group and let Pet be the associated Peterson variety in the flag variety G/B. The main theorem of this note gives an efficient presentation of the equivariant cohomology ring H^*_S(Pet) of the Peterson variety as a quotient of a polynomial ring by an ideal J generated by quadratic polynomials, in the spirit of the Borel presentation of the cohomology of the flag variety. Here the group S \cong \mathbb{C}^* is a certain subgroup of a maximal torus T of G. Our description of the ideal J uses the Cartan matrix and is uniform across Lie types. In our …

Let G be a complex semi-simple linear algebraic group without G_2 factors, B a Borel subgroup of G and T a maximal torus in B. The flag variety G/B is a projective G-homogeneous variety whose tangent space at the identity coset is isomorphic, as a B-module, to Lie(G)/Lie(B). Recall that if w is an element of the Weyl group W of the pair (G,T), the Schubert variety X(w) in G/B is by definition the closure of the Bruhat cell BwB. In this note we prove that X(w) is non-singular iff the following two conditions hold: 1) its Poincaré polynomial is palindromic and 2) the tangent space TE(X(w)) to th…
Let $X$ be a compact toric variety. Let $Hol$ denote the space of based holomorphic maps from $CP^1$ to $X$ which lie in a fixed homotopy class. Let $Map$ denote the corresponding space of continuous maps. We show that $Hol$ has the same homotopy groups as $Map$ up to some (computable) dimension. The proof uses a description of $Hol$ as a space of configurations of labelled points, where the labels lie in a partial monoid determined by the fan of $X$.
The generalized commuting and isospectral commuting varieties of a reductive Lie algebra have been introduced in a preceding article. In this note, it is proved that their normalizations are Gorenstein with rational singularities. Moreover, their canonical modules are free of rank 1. In particular, the usual commuting variety is Gorenstein with rational singularities and its canonical module is free of rank 1.
Let X be a normal variety endowed with an algebraic torus action. An additive group action $α$ on X is called vertical if a general orbit of $α$ is contained in the closure of an orbit of the torus action and the image of the torus normalizes the image of $α$ in Aut(X). Our first result in this paper is a classification of vertical additive group actions on X under the assumption that X is proper over an affine variety. Then we establish a criterion as to when the infinitesimal generators of a finite collection of additive group actions on X generate a finite-dimensional Lie algebra inside the…
We prove a general extrinsic rigidity theorem for homogeneous varieties in $\mathbb{CP}^N$. The theorem is used to show that the adjoint variety of a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ (the unique minimal G orbit in $\mathbb{P}\mathfrak{g}$) is extrinsically rigid to third order. In contrast, we show that the adjoint variety of $SL_3\mathbb{C}$, and the Segre product $\mathit{Seg}(\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^n)$, both varieties with osculating sequences of length two, are flexible at order two. In the $SL_3\mathbb{C}$ example we discuss the relationship between the extrinsic projectiv…
For a lattice $Γ$ of a simply connected solvable Lie group $G$, we describe the analytic germ in the variety of representations of $Γ$ at the trivial representation as an analytic germ which is linearly embedded in the analytic germ associated with the nilpotent Lie algebra determined by $G$. By this description, under certain assumption, we study the singularity of the analytic germ in the variety of representations of $Γ$ at the trivial representation by using the Kuranishi space construction. By a similar technique, we also study deformations of holomorphic structures of trivial vector bund…
In the thesis we present a new method for parametrizing algebraic varieties over the field of characteristic zero. The problem of parametrizing is reduced to a problem of finding an isomorphism of algebras. We introduce the Lie algebra of a variety as a Lie algebra related to its group of automorphisms. Constructing an isomorphism of this one and some classical Lie algebra (for example the algebra of matrices of the zero trace) then leads to parametrizing the variety. The problem of finding an isomorphism of Lie algebras is further reduced to trivializing an associative algebra, which means fi…
To define the notion of a generic property of finite dimensional 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras we use standard correspondence between such Lie algebras and points of an appropriate algebraic variety, where a negligible set is one contained in a proper Zariski-closed subset. We compute the maximal dimension of an abelian subalgebra of a generic Lie algebra and give a sufficient condition for a generic Lie algebra to admit no surjective homomorphism onto a non-abelian Lie algebra of a given dimension. Also we consider analogous questions for finitely generated torsion free nilpotent groups of cl…
We study minimal rational curves on a complex manifold that are tangent to a distribution. In this setting, the variety of minimal rational tangents (VMRT) has to be isotropic with respect to the Levi tensor of the distribution. Our main result is a converse of this: any smooth projective variety isotropic with respect to a vector-valued anti-symmetric form can be realized as VMRT of minimal rational curves tangent to a distribution on a complex manifold. The complex manifold is constructed as a partial equivariant compactification of a metabelian group, which is a result of independent intere…
Let a connected reductive group G act on the smooth connected variety X. The cotangent bundle of X is a Hamiltonian G-variety. We show that its "total moment map" has connected fibers. This is an expanded version of section 6 of my paper dg-ga/9712010 on Weyl groups of Hamiltonian manifolds.
Let Z be an affine algebraic variety and ED(Z)= max(2 dim Z+1, dim TZ). Let X be a smooth algebraic variety isomorphic to a semi-simple linear algebraic group whose Lie algebra is a sum of special linear Lie algebras. We show that if dim X > ED(Z) -1, then Z admits a closed embedding into X. We also show that for every smooth affine flexible variety Y there is a closed embedding of $Z$ into the the product of Y and an affine n-space provided that n > dim Z- 2 and dim Y +n > ED (Z) -1.
We show a Z^2-filtered algebraic structure and a "quantum to classical" principle on the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of a complete flag variety of general Lie type, generalizing earlier works of Leung and the second author. We also provide various applications on equivariant quantum Schubert calculus, including an equivariant quantum Pieri rule for any partial flag variety of Lie type A.
Fialowski and Schlichenmaier constructed examples of global deformations of Lie algebras of vector fields from deforming the underlying variety. We formulate their approach in a conceptual way. Namely, we construct a stack of deformations and a morphism form the moduli stack of stable marked curves. The morphism associates to a family of marked curves the family of Lie algebras obtained by taking the Lie algebra of vertical vector fields on the family where one has extracted the marked points. We show that this morphism is almost a monomorphism by Pursell-Shanks theory.
