Several asymptotic expansions of parabolic cylinder functions are discussed and error bounds for remainders in the expansions are presented. In particular Poincar{é}-type expansions for large values of the argument $z$ and uniform expansions for large values of the parameter are considered. The expansions are based on those given in Olver(1959) and on modifications of these expansions given in Temme(2000). Computer algebra techniques are used for obtaining representations of the bounds and for numerical computations.
We obtain so far unproved properties of a ratio involving a class of Hermite and parabolic cylinder functions. Those ratios are shown to be strictly decreasing and bounded by universal constants. Differently to usual analytic approaches, we employ simple purely probabilistic arguments to derive our results. In particular, we exploit the relation between Hermite and parabolic cylinder functions and the eigenfunctions of the infinitesimal generator of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. As a byproduct, we obtain Turán type inequalities.
In the abstract of [1] we read: "We obtain so far unproved properties of a ratio involving a classof Hermite and parabolic cylinder functions." However, we explain how some of the main results in that paper were already proved in [2], namely the `universal bounds'. An error in reference [2] was discussed in [1] which does not affect the proof given there for those `universal bounds'; we fix this erratum easily. We end this note proposing a conjecture regarding the best possible upper bound for a certain ratio of parabolic cylinder functions.
Asymptotic expansions are derived for solutions of the parabolic cylinder and Weber differential equations. In addition the inhomogeneous versions of the equations are considered, for the case of polynomial forcing terms. The expansions involve exponential, Airy and Scorer functions and slowly varying analytic coefficient functions involving simple coefficients. The approximations are uniformly valid for large values of the parameter and unbounded real and complex values of the argument. Explicit and readily computable error bounds are either furnished or available for all approximations.
The refined asymptotic expansion of the confluent hypergeometric function $M(a,b,z)$ on the Stokes line $\arg\,z=π$ given in {\it Appl. Math. Sci.} {\bf 7} (2013) 6601--6609 is employed to derive the correct exponentially small contribution to the asymptotic expansion for the even and odd solutions of a second-order differential equation related to Weber's equation. It is demonstrated that the standard asymptotics of the parabolic cylinder function $U(a,z)$ yield an incorrect exponentially small contribution to these solutions. Numerical results verifying the accuracy of the new expansions are…
Nield-Kuznetsov functions of the first kind are studied, which are solutions of an inhomogeneous parabolic Weber equation, and have applications in fluid flow problems. Connection formulas are constructed between them, numerically satisfactory solutions of the homogeneous version of the differential equation, and a new complementary Nield-Kuznetsov function. Asymptotic expansions are then derived that are uniformly valid for large values of the parameter and unbounded real and complex values of the argument. Laplace transforms of the parabolic cylinder functions $W(a,x)$ and $U(a,x)$ are subse…
Parabolic Cylinder functions (PCFs) are classical special functions with applications in many different fields. However, there is little information available regarding simple uniform approximations and bounds for these functions. We obtain very sharp bounds for the ratio $Φ_n(x)=U(n-1,x)/U(n,x)$ and the double ratio $Φ_n(x)/Φ_{n+1}(x)$ in terms of elementary functions (algebraic or trigonometric) and prove the monotonicity of these ratios; bounds for $U(n,z)/U(n,y)$ are also made available. The bounds are very sharp as $x\rightarrow \pm \infty$ and $n\rightarrow +\infty$, and this simultaneou…
In this paper, the product of parabolic cylinder functions $D_ν(\pm z)D_{ν+μ-1}(z)$, with different parameters $μ$ and $ν$, are established in terms of Laplace and Fourier transforms of Kummer's confluent hypergeometric functions. The provided integral representations are transformed to easily yield Nicholson-type integral forms and used to derive other series expansions for products of parabolic cylinder functions.
Numerical methods for the computation of the parabolic cylinder $U(a,z)$ for real $a$ and complex $z$ are presented. The main tools are recent asymptotic expansions involving exponential and Airy functions, with slowly varying analytic coefficient functions involving simple coefficients, and stable integral representations; these two main main methods can be complemented with Maclaurin series and a Poincaré asymptotic expansion. We provide numerical evidence showing that the combination of these methods is enough for computing the function with $5\times 10^{-13}$ relative accuracy in double pr…
The Integral Representation for the Product of Two Parabolic Cylinder Functions $D_ν(x) D_ν(-x)$ at $Re ν<0$ by Means of the Fundamental Solution of a Landau-Type Operator
This paper uses the convolution theorem of the Laplace transform to derive new inverse Laplace transforms for the product of two parabolic cylinder functions in which the arguments may have opposite sign. These transforms are subsequently specialized for products of the error function and its complement thereby yielding new integral representations for products of the latter two functions. The transforms that are derived in this paper also allow to correct two inverse Laplace transforms that are widely reported in the literature and subsequently uses one of the corrected expressions to obtain …
We prove the enveloping property of the known divergent asymptotic expansions of the large real zeros of the cylinder and Airy functions, and thereby answering in the affirmative two conjectures posed by Elbert and Laforgia and by Fabijonas and Olver, respectively. The essence of the proof is the construction of analytic functions that return the zeros when evaluated along certain discrete sets of real numbers. By manipulating contour integrals of these functions, we derive the asymptotic expansions of the large zeros truncated after a finite number of terms plus remainders that can be estimat…
