This paper is devoted to the problem of prescribing the scalar curvature under zero boundary conditions. Using dynamical and topological methods involving the study of critical points at infinity of the associated variational problem, we prove some existence results on the standard half sphere.
We consider the problem of prescribing the scalar curvature and the boundary mean curvature of the standard half three sphere, by deforming conformally its standard metric. Using blow up analysis techniques and minimax arguments, we prove some existence and compactness results.
In this paper we study some fourth order elliptic equation involving the critical Sobolev exponent, related to the prescription of a fourth order conformal invariant on the standard sphere. We use a topological method to prove the existence of at least a solution when the function to be prescribed is close to a constant and a finite dimensional map associated to it has non-zero degree.
In this paper we perform a fine blow-up analysis for a fourth order elliptic equation involving critical Sobolev exponent, related to the prescription of some conformal invariant on the standard sphere. We derive from this analysis some a priori estimates in dimension 5 and 6. On the five dimensionl sphere these a priori estimates combined with the perturbation result of Part I allow us to obtain some existence results. On the six dimensional sphere we prove the existence of at least one solution when an associated index is different from zero.
In this paper we consider a class of prescribing curvature type equations on half Euclidean balls. Under suitable assumptions on the scalar curvature function and boundary mean curvature function we prove a min-max type inequality and the corresponding energy estimates.
Prescribing $σ_k$ curvature equations are fully nonlinear generalizations of the prescribing Gaussian or scalar curvature equations. Given a positive function $K$ to be prescribed on the 4-dimensional round sphere. We obtain asymptotic profile analysis for potentially blowing up solutions to the $σ_2$ curvature equation with the given $K$; and rule out the possibility of blowing up solutions when $K$ satisfies a non-degeneracy condition. We also prove uniform a priori estimates for solutions to a family of $σ_2$ curvature equations deforming $K$ to a positive constant under the same non-degene…
We study the problem of prescribing the Paneitz curvature on higher dimensional spheres. Particular attention is paid to the blow-up points, i.e. the critical points at infinity of the corresponding variational problem. Using topological tools and a careful analysis of the gradient flow lines in the neighborhood of such critical points at infinity, we prove some existence results.
In this paper, we consider the problem of prescribing the scalar curvature under minimal boundary conditions on the standard four dimensional half sphere. We provide an Euler-Hopf type criterion for a given function to be a scalar curvature to a metric conformal to the standard one. Our proof involves the study of critical points at infinity of the associated variational problem.
In this paper we study the problem of prescribing the Gaussian curvature under a conformal change of the metric. We are concerned with the problem posed on a subdomain of the 2-sphere under Neumann boundary conditions of the conformal factor. If the area of the subdomain is greater than 2π, the associated energy functional is no longer bounded from below. We treat this case by using min-max techniques, giving a new existence result that generalizes and unifies previous work on the argument.
Making use of integral representations, we develop a unified approach to establish blow up profiles, compactness and existence of positive solutions of the conformally invariant equations $P_σ(v)= Kv^{\frac{n+2σ}{n-2σ}}$ on the standard unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ for all $σ\in (0,n/2)$, where $P_σ$ is the intertwining operator of order $2σ$. Finding positive solutions of these equations is equivalent to seeking metrics in the conformal class of the standard metric on spheres with prescribed certain curvatures. When $σ=1$, it is the prescribing scalar curvature problem or the Nirenberg problem,…
In this paper we study the problem of prescribing fractional $Q$-curvature of order $2σ$ for a conformal metric on the standard sphere $\Sn$ with $σ\in (0,n/2)$ and $n\geq2$. Compactness and existence results are obtained in terms of the flatness order $β$ of the prescribed curvature function $K$. Making use of integral representations and perturbation result, we develop a unified approach to obtain these results when $β\in [n-2σ,n)$ for all $σ\in (0,n/2)$. This work generalizes the corresponding results of Jin-Li-Xiong [Math. Ann. 369: 109--151, 2017] for $β\in (n-2σ,n)$.
This paper is devoted to establishing the compactness and existence results of the solutions to the prescribing fractional $Q$-curvatures problem of order $2σ$ on $n$-dimensional standard sphere when $ n-2σ=2$, $σ=1+m/2,$ $m\in \mathbb{N}_{+}.$ The compactness results are novel and optimal. In addition, we prove a degree-counting formula of all solutions to achieve the existence. From our results, we can know where blow up occur. Furthermore, the sequence of solutions that blow up precisely at any finite distinct location can be constructed. It is worth noting that our results include the case…
An orbit-like foliation is a singular foliation on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$ whose leaves are locally equidistant (i.e., a singular Riemannian foliation) and (transversely) infinitesimally homogenous. This class of singular foliation contains not only the classe of partion of the space into orbits of isometric actions, but also infinite many non homogenous examples and in particular the partition of $M$ into orbits of a proper groupoid. In this paper we prove a version of Kondrakov Embedding Theorem and an analogous Principle of Symmetric Criticality of Palais for basic funcions of or…
This is the second of two papers, in which we study the problem of prescribing Webster scalar curvature on the CR sphere as a given function f. Using the Webster scalar curvature flow, we prove an existence result under suitable assumptions on the Morse indices of f.
For a class of semi-linear elliptic equations with critical Sobolev exponents and boundary conditions, we prove point-wise estimates for blowup solutions and energy estimates. A special case of this class of equations is a locally defined prescribing scalar curvature and mean curvature type equation.
In this paper we study the problem of prescribing a fourth order conformal invariant (the Paneitz curvature) on the $n$-sphere, with $n\geq 5$. Using tools from the theory of critical points at infinity, we provide some topological conditions on the level sets of a given positive function under which we prove the existene of a metric, conformally equivalent to the standard metric, with prescribed Paneitz curvature.
In this paper we perform a refined blow up analysis of finite energy approximated solutions to a Nirenberg type problem on half spheres. The later consists of prescribing, under minimal boundary conditions, the scalar curvature to be a given function. In particular we give a precise location of blow up points and blow up rates. Such an analysis shows that the blow up picture of the Nirenberg problem on half spheres is far more complicated that in the case of closed spheres. Indeed besides the combination of interior and boundary blow ups, there are non simple blow up points for subcritical sol…
This is the first of two papers, in which we prove some properties of the Webster scalar curvature flow. More precisely, we establish the long-time existence, L^p convergence and the blow-up analysis for the solution of the flow. As a by-product, we prove the convergence of the CR Yamabe flow on the CR sphere. The results in this paper will be used to prove a result of prescribing Webster scalar curvature on the CR sphere, which is the main result of the second paper.
We consider the problem of prescribing the $σ_k$-curvature on the standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ with $n \geq 3$. We prove existence and compactness theorems when $k \geq n/2$. This extends an earlier result of Chang, Han and Yang for $n = 4$ and $k = 2$.
In this paper, we consider the problem of prescribing scalar curvature on n-sphere. Assume that the candidate curvature function $f$, which is allowed to change sign, satisfies some kind of Morse index or symmetry condition. By studying the well-known scalar curvature flow, we are able to prove that the flow converges to a metric with the prescribed function $f$ as its scalar curvature.
We study half-spheres with small radii sitting on the boundary of a smooth bounded domain while meeting it orthogonally. Even though it is known that there exist families of CMC and Willmore type half-spheres near a nondegenerate critical point p of the domains boundaries mean curvature, it is unknown in both cases whether these provide a foliation of any deleted neighborhood of p. We prove that this is not guaranteed and establish a criterion in terms of the boundaries geometry that ensures or prevents the respective surfaces from providing such a foliation. This perhaps surprising phenomenon…
In this paper we study a Nirenberg type problem on standard half spheres $(\mathbb{S}^n_+,g_0)$ consisting of finding conformal metrics of prescribed scalar curvature and zero boundary mean curvature on the boundary $\partial \mathbb{S}^n_+$. This problem amounts to solve the following boundary value problem involving the critical Sobolev exponent: \begin{equation*} (\mathcal{P}) \quad \begin{cases} -\D_{g_0} u \, + \, \frac{n(n-2)}{4} u \, = K \, u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}},\, u > 0 & \mbox{in } \mathbb{S}^n_+, \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}\, =\, 0 & \mbox{on } \partial \mathbb{S}^n_+. \end{cases} \e…
In this paper we study the Nirenberg problem on standard half spheres $(\mathbb{S}^n_+,g), \, n \geq 5$, which consists of finding conformal metrics of prescribed scalar curvature and zero boundary mean curvature on the boundary. This problem amounts to solve the following boundary value problem involving the critical Sobolev exponent: \begin{equation*} (\mathcal{P}) \quad \begin{cases} -\D_{g} u \, + \, \frac{n(n-2)}{4} u \, = K \, u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}},\, u > 0 & \mbox{in } \mathbb{S}^n_+, \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}\, =\, 0 & \mbox{on } \partial \mathbb{S}^n_+. \end{cases} \end{equation*} w…
We establish global existence, uniqueness, regularity and long-time asymptotics of strong solutions to the half-harmonic heat flow and dissipative Landau-Lifshitz equation, valid for initial data that is small in the homogeneous Sobolev norm $\dot{H}^{\frac n 2}$ for space dimensions $n \le 3$.
We study the fundamental problem of two gas species in two dimensional velocity space whose molecules collide as hard circles in the presence of a flat boundary and with dependence on only one space dimension. The case of three-dimensional velocity space is a generalization. More speciffically the linear problem arising when the second gas dominates as a flow with constant velocity (and hence zero temperature) is considered. The boundary condition adopted consists of prescribing the outgoing velocity distribution at the wall. It is discovered that the presence of the boundary under general ass…
Our first objective in this paper is to give a natural formulation of the Christoffel problem for hypersurfaces in $H^{n+1}$, by means of the hyperbolic Gauss map and the notion of hyperbolic curvature radii for hypersurfaces. Our second objective is to provide an explicit equivalence of this Christoffel problem with the famous problem of prescribing scalar curvature on $§^n$ for conformal metrics, posed by Nirenberg and Kazdan-Warner. This construction lets us translate into the hyperbolic setting the known results for the scalar curvature problem, and also provides a hypersurface theory inte…
We show the regularity of, and derive a-priori estimates for (weakly) harmonic maps from a Riemannian manifold into a Euclidean sphere under the assumption that the image avoids some neighborhood of a half-equator. The proofs combine constructions of strictly convex functions and the regularity theory of quasi-linear elliptic systems. We apply these results to the spherical and Euclidean Bernstein problems for minimal hypersurfaces, obtaining new conditions under which compact minimal hypersurfaces in spheres or complete minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces are trivial.
We study the Cauchy problem associated with the equations governing a fluid loaded plate formulated on either the line or the half-line. We show that in both cases the problem can be solved by employing the unified approach to boundary value problems introduced by on of the authors in the late 1990s. The problem on the full line was analysed by Crighton et. al. using a combination of Laplace and Fourier transforms. The new approach avoids the technical difficulty of the a priori assumption that the amplitude of the plate is in $L^1_{dt}(R^+)$ and furthermore yields a simpler solution represent…
In this paper we study the problem, posed by Troyanov, of prescribing the Gaussian curvature under a conformal change of the metric on surfaces with conical singularities. Such geometrical problem can be reduced to the solvability of a nonlinear PDE with exponential type non-linearity admitting a variational structure. In particular, we are concerned with the case where the prescribed function $K$ changes sign. When the surface is the standard sphere, namely for the singular Nirenberg problem, by a min-max approach and a new compactness argument we give sufficient conditions on $K$, concerning…
