It is shown that if the system of the Euler equations has a special global in time smooth solution with the linear profile of velocity, then another solutions with Cauchy data, close in the Sobolev norm to the initial data of the given solution, will be globally smooth as well. The examples of the solutions are constructed.
We are concerned with globally defined entropy solutions to the Euler equations for compressible fluid flows in transonic nozzles with general cross-sectional areas. Such nozzles include the de Laval nozzles and other more general nozzles whose cross-sectional area functions are allowed at the nozzle ends to be either zero (closed ends) or infinity (unbounded ends). To achieve this, in this paper, we develop a vanishing viscosity method to construct globally defined approximate solutions and then establish essential uniform estimates in weighted $L^p$ norms for the whole range of physical adia…
We examine the two-dimensional Euler equations including the local energy (in)equality as a differential inclusion and show that the associated relaxation essentially reduces to the known relaxation for the Euler equations considered without local energy (im)balance. Concerning bounded solutions we provide a sufficient criterion for a globally dissipative subsolution to induce infinitely many globally dissipative solutions having the same initial data, pressure and dissipation measure as the subsolution. The criterion can easily be verified in the case of a flat vortex sheet giving rise to the…
We show that for any $\al<\frac 17$ there exist $\al$-Hölder continuous weak solutions of the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equation, which satisfy the local energy inequality and strictly dissipate the total kinetic energy. The proof relies on the convex integration scheme and the main building blocks of the solution are various Mikado flows with disjoint supports in space and time.
The bipolar non-isentropic compressible Euler-Maxwell system is investigated in $R^3$ in the present paper, and the $L^q$ time decay rate for the global smooth solution is established. It is shown that the total densities, total temperatures and magnetic field of two carriers converge to the equilibrium states at the same rate $(1+t)^{-3/2+3q/2}$ in $L^q$ norm. But, both the difference of densities and the difference of temperatures of two carriers decay at the rate $(1+t)^{-2-\frac{1}{q}}$, and the velocity and electric field decay at the rate $(1+t)^{-3/2+\frac{1}{2q}}$. This phenomenon on t…
A fundamental two-fluid model for describing dynamics of a plasma is the Euler-Poisson system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their self-consistent electrostatic force. Global smooth electron dynamics were constructed in Guo due to dispersive effect of the electric field. In this paper, we construct global smooth irrotational solutions with small amplitude for ion dynamics in the Euler-Poisson system.
We show that Hölder continuous incompressible Euler flows that satisfy the local energy inequality ("globally dissipative" solutions) exhibit nonuniqueness and contain examples that strictly dissipate kinetic energy. The collection of such solutions emanating from a fixed initial data may have positive Hausdorff dimension in the energy space even if the local energy equality is imposed, and the set of initial data giving rise to such an infinite family of solutions is $C^0$ dense in the space of continuous, divergence free vector fields on the torus ${\mathbb T}^3$. The construction of these s…
The Euler-Poisson system is a fundamental two-fluid model to describe the dynamics of the plasma consisting of compressible electrons and a uniform ion background. By using the dispersive Klein-Gordon effect, Guo \cite{Guo98} first constructed a global smooth irrotational solution in the three dimensional case. It has been conjectured that same results should hold in the two-dimensional case. The main difficulty in 2D comes from the slow dispersion of the linear flow and certain nonlocal resonant obstructions in the nonlinearity. In this paper we develop a new method to overcome these difficul…
A basic example of shear flow was introduced by DiPerna and Majda to study the weak limit of oscillatory solutions of the Euler equations of incompressible ideal fluids. In particular, they proved by means of this example that weak limit of solutions of Euler equations may, in some cases, fail to be a solution of Euler equations. We use this shear flow example to provide non-generic, yet nontrivial, examples concerning the loss of smoothness of solutions of the three-dimensional Euler equations, for initial data that do not belong to $C^{1,α}$. Moreover, we show by means of this shear flow exa…
The Euler-Maxwell system as a hydrodynamic model for plasma physics to describe the dynamics of the compressible electrons in a constant charged non-moving ion background is studied. The global smooth flow with small amplitude is constructed in three space dimensions when the electron velocity relaxation is present. The speed of the electrons flow trending to uniform equilibrium is obtained. The pointwise behavior of solutions to the linearized homogeneous system in the frequency space is also investigated in detail.
We consider the Euler-Poincaré equation on $\mathbb R^d$, $d\ge 2$. For a large class of smooth initial data we prove that the corresponding solution blows up in finite time. This settles an open problem raised by Chae and Liu \cite{Chae Liu}. Our analysis exhibits some new concentration mechanism and hidden monotonicity formula associated with the Euler-Poincaré flow. In particular we show the abundance of blowups emanating from smooth initial data with certain sign properties. No size restrictions are imposed on the data. We also showcase a class of initial data for which the corresponding s…
We study the convergence rate of the solutions of the incompressible Euler-$α$, an inviscid second-grade complex fluid, equations to the corresponding solutions of the Euler equations, as the regularization parameter $α$ approaches zero. First we show the convergence in $H^{s}$, $s>n/2+1$, in the whole space, and that the smooth Euler-$α$ solutions exist at least as long as the corresponding solution of the Euler equations. Next we estimate the convergence rate for two-dimensional vortex patch with smooth boundaries.
Because pressure is determined globally for the incompressible Euler equations, a localized change to the initial velocity will have an immediate effect throughout space. For solutions to be physically meaningful, one would expect such effects to decrease with distance from the localized change, giving the solutions a type of stability. Indeed, this is the case for solutions having spatial decay, as can be easily shown. We consider the more difficult case of solutions lacking spatial decay, and show that such stability still holds, albeit in a somewhat weaker form.
This article concerns the global-in-time existence of smooth solutions with small amplitude to two space dimensional Euler-Poisson system. The main difficulty lies in the slow time decay $(1+t)^{-1}$ of the linear system. Inspired by Ozawa, Tsutaya, and Tsutsumi's work, we show that such smooth solutions exist for radially symmetric flows.
In this paper, we consider the quasi-neutral limit of a three dimensional Euler-Poisson system of compressible fluids coupled to a magnetic field. We prove that, as Debye length tends to zero, periodic initial-value problems of the model have unique smooth solutions existing in the time interval where the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations has smooth solution. Meanwhile, it is proved that smooth solutions converge to solutions of incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with a sharp convergence rate in the process of quasi-neutral limit.
The aim of this note is to present the recent results in [Buckmaster, Cao-Labora, Gómez-Serrano, arXiv:2208.09445, 2022], concerning the existence of "imploding singularities" for the 3D isentropic compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. Our work builds upon the pioneering work of Merle, Raphaël, Rodnianski, and Szeftel [Merle, Raphaël, Rodnianski, and Szeftel, Ann. of Math., 196(2):567-778, 2022, Ann. of Math., 196(2):779-889, 2022, Invent. Math., 227(1):247-413, 2022] and proves the existence of self-similar profiles for all adiabatic exponents $γ>1$ in the case of Euler; as well as …
We study the stabilizing effect of rotational forcing in the nonlinear setting of two-dimensional shallow-water and more general models of compressible Euler equations. In [H. Liu and E. Tadmor, Phys. D 188 (2004), no. 3-4, 262-276] we have shown that the pressureless version of these equations admit global smooth solution for a large set of sub-critical initial configurations. In the present work we prove that when rotational force dominates the pressure, it \emph{prolongs} the life-span of smooth solutions for t < ln(1/d); here d << 1 is the ratio of the pressure gradient measured by the inv…
We study the singularity formation of smooth solutions of the relativistic Euler equations in $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetime for both finite initial energy and infinite initial energy. For the finite initial energy case, we prove that any smooth solution, with compactly supported non-trivial initial data, blows up in finite time. For the case of infinite initial energy, we first prove the existence, uniqueness and stability of a smooth solution if the initial data is in the subluminal region away from the vacuum. By further assuming the initial data is a smooth compactly supported perturbation …
We prove the global existence of smooth solution to the relativistic string equation in a class of data that is not small. Our solution admits the feature that the right-travelling wave can be large and the left-travelling wave is sufficiently small, and vice versa. In particular, the large-size solution exists in the whole space, instead of a null strip arising from the short pulse data. This generalizes the result of Liuli-Yang-Yu (Adv. Math. 2018) to the quasilinear setting with non-small data. In addition, in our companion paper, we are able to show the global solution here can also be see…
In this paper we introduce (I,J) similar method for incompressible two and three dimensional Euler equations and Navier-Stokes equations, obtain a series of explicit (I,J) similar solutions to the incompressible two dimensional Euler equations, they include all of twin wave solutions, some new singularity solutions, and some global smooth solutions with finite energy. We also discover that twin wave solution and affine solution to two dimensional incompressible Euler equations are respectively plane wave and constant vector. Finally, we supply some explicit piecewise smooth solutions to incomp…
We establish the existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions with large vorticity and weak solutions with vortex sheets/entropy waves for the steady Euler equations for both compressible and incompressible fluids in arbitrary infinitely long nozzles. We first develop a new approach to establish the existence of smooth solutions without assumptions on the sign of the second derivatives of the horizontal velocity, or the Bernoulli and entropy functions, at the inlet for the smooth case. Then the existence for the smooth case can be applied to construct approximate solutions to establish the exi…
In this paper, we show the existence of a family of compactly supported smooth vorticities, which are solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equation and rotate uniformly in time and space.
In this paper, the finite time blow-up of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for full Euler-Poisson equations and isentropic Euler-Poisson equations with repulsive forces or attractive forces in high dimensions $(n\geq3)$ is proved for a large class of initial data. It is not required that the initial data has compact support or contains vacuum in any finite regions.
In this paper, we prove the existence of smooth initial data for the 2D free boundary incompressible Euler equations (also known for some particular scenarios as the water wave problem), for which the smoothness of the interface breaks down in finite time into a splash singularity or a splat singularity.

Let $(\mathrm{M}, ω_{0})$ be a connected paracompact smooth oriented manifold. We establish a necessary and sufficient conditions on Lie subalgebra $\mathfrak{a}$ of $\mathrm{T M}$ such that its orbits becomes diffeomorphic to an open convex set of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, where $n$ is the orbit dimension.
After reformulate the incompressible Euler-$α$ equations in 3D smooth domain with Drichlet data, we obtain the unique classical solutions to Euler-$α$ equations exist in uniform time interval independent of $α$. We also show the solution of the Euler-$α$ converge to the corresponding solution of Euler equation in $L^2$ in space, uniformly in time. In the sequel, it follows that the $H^s$ $(s>\frac{n}{2}+1)$ solutions of Euler-$α$ equations exist in any fixed sub-interval of the maximum existent interval for the Euler equations provided that initial is regular enough and $α$ is small sufficient…
We study one-dimensional Eulerian dynamics with nonlocal alignment interactions, featuring strong short-range alignment, and long-range misalignment. Compared with the well-studied Euler-alignment system, the presence of the misalignment brings different behaviors of the solutions, including the possible creation of vacuum at infinite time, which destabilizes the solutions. We show that with a strongly singular short-range alignment interaction, the solution is globally regular, despite the effect of misalignment.
We define compressive and rarefactive waves and give the differential equations describing smooth wave steepening for the compressible Euler equations with a varying entropy profile and general pressure laws. Using these differential equations, we directly generalize P. Lax's singularity (shock) formation results for hyperbolic systems with two variables to the compressible Euler equations for a polytropic ideal gas. Our results are valid globally without restriction on the size of the variation of initial data.
We present a very simple proof of the global existence of a $C^\infty$ Lagrangian flow map for the 2D Euler and second-grade fluid equations (on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary) which has $C^\infty$ dependence on initial data $u_0$ in the class of $H^s$ divergence-free vector fields for $s>2$.
Using the Mountain Pass Theorem, we establish the existence of periodic solution for Euler-Lagrange equation. Lagrangian consists of kinetic part (an anisotropic G-function), potential part $K-W$ and a forcing term. We consider two situations: $G$ satisfying $Δ_2\cap\nabla_2$ in infinity and globally. We give conditions on the growth of the potential near zero for both situations.
We consider a modified Euler equation on $\mathbb R^2$. We prove existence of weak global solutions for bounded (and fast decreasing at infinity) initial conditions and construct Gibbs-type measures on function spaces which are quasi-invariant for the Euler flow. Almost everywhere with respect to such measures (and, in particular, for less regular initial conditions), the flow is shown to be also globally defined.
We construct new stationary weak solutions of the 3D Euler equation with compact support. The solutions, which are piecewise smooth and discontinuous across a surface, are axisymmetric with swirl. The range of solutions we find is different from, and larger than, the family of smooth stationary solutions recently obtained by Gavrilov and Constantin-La-Vicol; in particular, these solutions are not localizable. A key step in the proof is the construction of solutions to an overdetermined elliptic boundary value problem where one prescribes both Dirichlet and (nonconstant) Neumann data.
It is well known that the Euler vortex patch in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ will remain regular if it is regular enough initially. In bounded domains, the regularity theory for patch solutions is less complete. In this paper, we study Euler vortex patches in a general smooth bounded domain. We prove global in time regularity by providing an upper bound on the growth of curvature of the patch boundary. For a special symmetric scenario, we construct an example of double exponential curvature growth, showing that our upper bound is qualitatively sharp.
We prove that the 2d Euler equation is globally well-posed in a space of vector fields having spatial asymptotic expansion at infinity of any a priori given order. The asymptotic coefficients of the solutions are holomorphic functions of $t$, do not involve (spacial) logarithmic terms, and develop even when the initial data has fast decay at infinity. We discuss the evolution in time of the asymptotic terms and their approximation properties.
We prove global in time existence of solutions of the Euler compressible equations for a Van der Waals gas when the density is small enough in $Hm$, for $m$ large enough. To do so, we introduce a specific symmetrisation allowing areas of null density. Next, we make estimates in $Hm$, using for some terms the estimates done by M. Grassin, who proved the same theorem in the easier case of a perfect polytropic gas. We treat the remaining terms separately, due to their non-linearity.
For one dimensional or multidimensional compressible Euler system of polytropic gases, it is well known that the smooth solution will generally develop singularities in finite time. However, for three dimensional Chaplygin gases, due to the crucial role of "null condition" in the potential equation which is derived by the irrotational and isentropic flow, P.Godin in [9] has proved the global existence of a smooth 3-D spherically symmetric flow with variable entropy when the initial data are of small smooth perturbations with compact supports to a constant state. It is noted that there are some…

We consider the isentropic Euler equations of gas dynamics in the whole two-dimensional space and we prove the existence of a $C^\infty$ initial datum which admits infinitely many bounded admissible weak solutions. Taking advantage of the relation between smooth solutions to the Euler system and to the Burgers equation we construct a smooth compression wave which collapses into a perturbed Riemann state at some time instant $T > 0$. In order to continue the solution after the formation of the discontinuity, we adjust and apply the theory developed by De Lellis and Székelyhidi and we construct …

The fundamental "two-fluid" model for describing plasma dynamics is given by the Euler-Maxwell system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their own self-consistent electromagnetic field. We prove global stability of a constant neutral background, in the sense that irrotational, smooth and localized perturbations of a constant background with small amplitude lead to global smooth solutions in three space dimensions for the Euler-Maxwell system. Our construction applies equally well to other plasma models such as the Euler-Poisson system for two-fluids and a relativistic…
The free-boundary compressible 1-D Euler equations with moving physical vacuum boundary are a system of hyperbolic conservation laws which are both characteristic and degenerate. The physical vacuum singularity (or rate-of-degeneracy) requires the sound speed $c= γρ^{γ-1}$ to scale as the square-root of the distance to the vacuum boundary, and has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. We establish the existence of unique solutions to this system on a short time-interval, which are smooth (in Sobolev spaces) all the way to the moving boundary. The proof is founded on a new higher…
We consider the (repulsive) Euler-Poisson system for the electrons in two dimensions and prove that small smooth perturbations of a constant background exist for all time and remain smooth (never develop shocks). This extends to 2D the work of Guo.
Using recent developments in the theory of globally defined expanding compressible gases, we construct a class of global-in-time solutions to the compressible 3-D Euler-Poisson system without any symmetry assumptions in both the gravitational and the plasma case. Our allowed range of adiabatic indices includes, but is not limited to all $γ$ of the form $γ=1+\frac1n$, $n\in\mathbb N\setminus\{1\}$. The constructed solutions have initially small densities and a compact support. As $t\to\infty$ the density scatters to zero and the support grows at a linear rate in $t$.
We prove the asymptotic stability of shear flows close to the Couette flow for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. More precisely, if the initial velocity is close to the Couette flow and the initial density is close to a positive constant in the Gevrey class 2, then 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations are globally well-posed and the velocity converges strongly to a shear flow close to the Couette flow, and the vorticity will be driven to small scales by a linear evolution and weakly converges as $t\to \infty$. To our knowledge, t…
We find a smooth solution of the 2D Euler equation on a bounded domain which exists and is unique in a natural class locally in time, but blows up in finite time in the sense of its vorticity losing continuity. The domain's boundary is smooth except at two points, which are interior cusps.
In this three-part monograph, we prove that steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes flows posed over the moving boundary, $y = 0$, can be decomposed into Euler and Prandtl flows in the inviscid limit globally in $[1,\infty) \times [0,\infty)$, assuming a sufficiently small velocity mismatch. Sharp decay rates and self-similar asymptotics are extracted for both Prandtl and Eulerian layers. We then develop a functional framework to capture precise decay rates of the remainders, and prove the corresponding embedding theorems by establishing weighted estimates for their higher order tangential deriva…
In this paper, we consider the 1D compressible Euler equation with the damping coefficient $λ/(1+t)^μ$. Under the assumption that $0\leq μ<1$ and $λ>0$ or $μ=1$ and $λ> 2$, we prove that solutions exist globally in time, if initial data are small $C^1$ perturbation near constant states. In particular, we remove the conditions on the limit $\lim_{|x| \rightarrow \infty} (u (0,x), v (0,x))$, assumed in previous results.
We consider the barotropic Euler equations in dimension d>1 with decaying density at spatial infinity. The phase portrait of the nonlinear ode governing the equation for spherically symmetric self-similar solutions has been introduced in the pioneering work of Guderley. It allows to construct global profiles of the self-similar problem, which however turn out to be generically non-smooth across the associated light (acoustic) cone. In a suitable range of barotropic laws and for a sequence of quantized speeds accumulating to a critical value, we prove the existence of non-generic C^\infty self-…
