For given polynomial map $F:\C^2\to\C^2$ with nonvanishing jacobian we associate a variety whose homology or intersection homology describes the geometry of singularities at infinity of this map.
By introducing motivic Milnor fibers at infinity of polynomial maps, we propose some methods for the study of nilpotent parts of monodromies at infinity. The numbers of Jordan blocks in the monodromy at infinity will be described by the Newton polyhedron at infinity of the polynomial.
We show that the number of bifurcation points at infinity of a polynomial function f : C2 -> C is at most the number of branches at infinity of a generic fiber of f and that this upper bound can be diminished by one in certain cases.
We show that the variation of the topology at infinity of a two-variable polynomial function is localisable at a finite number of "atypical points" at infinity. We construct an effective algorithm with low complexity in order to detect sharply the bifurcation values of the polynomial function.
We present a new approach for estimating the set of bifurcation values at infinity. This yields a significant shrinking of the number of coefficients in the recent algorithm introduced by Jelonek and Kurdyka for reaching critical values at infinity by rational arcs.
We use the notion of Milnor fibres of the germ of a meromorphic function and the method of partial resolutions for a study of topology of a polynomial map at infinity (mainly for calculation of the zeta-function of a monodromy). It gives effective methods of computation of the zeta-function for a number of cases and a criterium for a value to be atypical at infinity.
We give three new proofs of a theorem of C. Sabbah asserting that the weight filtration of the limit mixed Hodge structure at infinity of cohomologically tame polynomials coincides with the monodromy filtration up to a certain shift depending on the unipotent or non-unipotent monodromy part.
We classify singularities at infinity of polynomials of degree 3 in 3 variables, $ f (x_0, x_1, x_2) = f_1 (x_0, x_1, x_2) + f_2 (x_0, x_1, x_2) + f_3 (x_0, x_1, x_2) $, $ f_i $ homogeneous polynomial of degree $ i $, $ i = 1,2,3 $. Based on this classification, we calculate the jump in the Milnor number of an isolated singularity at infinity, when we pass from the special fiber to a generic fiber. As an application of the results, we investigate the existence of global fibrations of degree 3 polynomials in $\mathbb{C}^3$ and search for information about the topology of the fibers in each equi…
In this work we prove that the set of points at infinity $S_\infty:={\rm Cl}_{{\mathbb R}{\mathbb P}^m}(S)\cap\mathsf{H}_\infty$ of a semialgebraic set $S\subset{\mathbb R}^m$ which is the image of a polynomial map $f:{\mathbb R}^n\to{\mathbb R}^m$ is connected. This result is no further true in general if $f$ is a regular map, although it still works for a large family of regular maps that we call quasi-polynomial maps.
In this paper we show examples of computations achieved using the formulas of our previous paper, which express the push-forwards in equivariant cohomology as iterated residues at infinity. We consider the equivariant cohomology of the complex Lagrangian Grassmannian $LG(n)$ and the orthogonal Grassmannian with the action of the maximal torus. In particular, we show how to obtain some well-known results due to P. Pragacz and J. Ratajski on integrals of Schur polynomials over the Lagrangian Grassmannian $LG(n)$ and the orthogonal Grassmannian $OG(n)$.
We give a concrete formula for the total Milnor number of the weighted-Le-Yomdin-at-infinity polynomial in most of the interesting cases. As an application, we give a description of the monodromy fibration at infinity for such kind of polynomial.
Gathering different results from singularity theory, geometry and combinatorics, we show that the spectrum at infinity of a tame Laurent polynomial counts lattice points in polytopes and we deduce an effective algorithm in order to compute the Ehrhart polynomial of a simplex containing the origin as an interior point.
In the last years a lot of work has been concentrated on the study of the behaviour at infinity of polynomial maps. This behaviour can be very complicated, therefore the main idea was to find special classes of polynomial maps which have, in some sense, nice properties at infinity. In this paper, we completely determine the complex algebraic monodromy at infinity for a special class of polynomial maps (which is complicated enough to show the nature of the general problem).
By using sheaf-theoretical methods such as constructible sheaves, we generalize the formula of Libgober-Sperber concerning the zeta functions of monodromy at infinity of polynomial maps into various directions. In particular, some formulas for the zeta functions of global monodromy along the fibers of bifurcation points of polynomial maps will be obtained.
We study the existence of Milnor fibration on a big enough sphere at infinity for a mixed polynomial $f: \bR^{2n} \to \bR^2$. By using strong non-degeneracy condition, we prove a counterpart of Némethi and Zaharia's fibration theorem. In particular, we obtain a global version of Oka's fibration theorem for strongly non-degenerate and convenient mixed polynomials.
Let $f:\mathbb{C}^2 \to \mathbb{C}$ be a polynomial map. Let $\mathbb{C}^2 \subset X$ be a compactification of $\mathbb{C}^2$ where $X$ is a smooth rational compact surface and such that there exists a morphism of varieties $Φ:X\to \mathbb{P}^1$ which extends $f$. Put $\mathcal{D}=X\setminus \mathbb{C}^2$; $\mathcal{D}$ is a curve whose irreducible components are smooth rational compact curves and all its singularities are ordinary double points. The dual graph of $\mathcal{D}$ is a tree. We are interested in this tree, and we analyse its complexity in terms of the genus of the generic fiber o…

In this paper, we relate the set of asymptotic critical values of a polynomial function $f$ with the set of discontinuity of two functions, the multivalued function which associate to each value $t$ the set of tangent directions at infinity of the fiber $f^{-1}(t)$ and the composition of the $(n-2)$-dimensional volume function with the first one. This gives necessary conditions of equisingularity at infinity for the family of the fibers of a real polynomial function.
We provide significant conditions under which we prove the existence of stable open book structures at infinity, i.e. on spheres $S^{m-1}_R$ of large enough radius $R$. We obtain new classes of real polynomial maps $\mathbb R^m \to \mathbb R^p$ which induce such structures.
In the paper "Geometry of polynomial mapping at infinity via intersection homology" the second and third authors associated to a given polynomial mapping $F : \C^2 \to \C^2$ with nonvanishing jacobian a variety whose homology or intersection homology describes the geometry of singularities at infinity of the mapping. We generalize this result.
We give a topological model for a polynomial map from $\C^n$ to $\C$ in the neighborhood of a fiber with isolated singularities. This is motivated out of the ``unfolding of links'' described earlier by the first author and Lee Rudolph. The topological model gives a useful encoding of the local and global monodromy for the map. The new ingredients --- the topology of the singularities at infinity of an irregular fiber, as encoded by the Milnor fibers at infinity and the monodromy maps on these Milnor fibers --- are recoverable for n=2 in full from the link at infinity of the irregular fiber. Th…
In this paper, we determine the bifurcation set of a real polynomial function of two variables for non-degenerate case in the sense of Newton polygons by using a toric compactification. We also count the number of singular phenomena at infinity, called "cleaving" and "vanishing" in the same setting. Finally, we give an upper bound of the number of elements in the bifurcation set in terms of its Newton polygon. To obtain the upper bound, we apply toric modifications to the singularities at infinity successively.
We consider the monodromy at infinity and the monodromies around the bifurcation points of polynomial functions $f : \CC^n \longrightarrow \CC$ which are not tame and might have non-isolated singularities. Our description of their Jordan blocks in terms of the Newton polyhedra and the motivic Milnor fibers relies on two new issues: the non-atypical eigenvalues of the monodromies and the corresponding concentration results for their generalized eigenspaces.
We present a global version of the Łojasiewicz inequality on comparing the rate of growth of two polynomial functions in the case the mapping defined by these functions is (Newton) non-degenerate at infinity. In addition, we show that the condition of non-degeneracy at infinity is generic in the sense that it holds in an open and dense semi-algebraic set of the entire space of input data.
Let R be a real closed field and A=R[x_1,...,x_n]. Let sper A denote the real spectrum of A. There are two kinds of points in sper A : finite points (those for which all of |x_1|,...,|x_n| are bounded above by some constant in R) and points at infinity. In this paper we study the structure of the set of points at infinity of sper A and their associated valuations. Let T be a subset of {1,...,n}. For j in {1,...,n}, let y_j=x_j if j is not in T and y_j=1/x_j if j is in T. Let B_T=R[y_1,...,y_n]. We express sper A as a disjoint union of sets of the form U_T and construct a homeomorphism of each …
We study the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials specialized at infinity from various points of view. First, we define a family of modules of the Iwahori algebra whose characters are equal to the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials specialized at infinity. Second, we show that these modules are isomorphic to the dual spaces of sections of certain sheaves on the semi-infinite Schubert varieties. Third, we prove that the global versions of these modules are homologically dual to the level one affine Demazure modules.
Consider a primitive polynomial $f$ in two variables, thought of as a map from the affine plane to the affine line. We study the minimimal compactification of $f$; from our result one deduces in particular that if one of the fibers of $f$ has only one fiber at infinity, then all the fibers of $f$ have a simultaneous resolution of singularities at infinity. From this one gets a very simple proof of the Suzuki-Abhyankar-Moh theorem on the embeddings of the affine line in the plane.
We show that for a polynomial mapping F = (f_1,...,f_m): C^n \to C^m the Lojasiewicz exponent at infinity of F is attained on the set {z \in C^n : f_1(z)...f_m(z) = 0}
We describe how to compute topological objects associated to a polynomial map of several complex variables with isolated singularities. These objects are: the affine critical values, the affine Milnor numbers for all irregular fibers, the critical values at infinity, and the Milnor numbers at infinity for all irregular fibers. Then for a family of polynomials we detect parameters where the topology of the polynomials can change. Implementation and examples are given with the computer algebra system Singular.
We generalize and complete some of Maxim's recent results on Alexander invariants of a polynomial transversal to the hyperplane at infinity. Roughly speaking, and surprisingly, such a polynomial behaves both topologically and algebraically (e.g. in terms of the variation of MHS on the cohomology of its smooth fibers), like a homogeneous polynomial.
Let $S\subset \mathbb{C}^n$ be a non-singular algebraic set and $f \colon \mathbb{C}^n \to \mathbb{C}$ be a polynomial function. It is well-known that the restriction $f|_S \colon S \to \mathbb{C}$ of $f$ on $S$ is a locally trivial fibration outside a finite set $B(f|_S) \subset \mathbb{C}.$ In this paper, we give an explicit description of a finite set $T_\infty(f|_S) \subset \mathbb{C}$ such that $B(f|_S) \subset K_0(f|_S) \cup T_\infty(f|_S),$ where $K_0(f|_S)$ denotes the set of critical values of the $f|_S.$ Furthermore, $T_\infty(f|_S)$ is contained in the set of critical values of cert…

Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Given a polynomial f(x,y) in K[x,y] with one place at infinity, we prove that either f is equivalent to a coordinate, or the family (f+c) has at most two rational elements. When (f+c) has two rational elements, we give a description of the singularities of these elements.
We study the topology of polynomial functions by deforming them generically. We explain how the non-conservation of the total ``quantity'' of singularity in the neighbourhood of infinity is related to the variation of topology in certain families of boundary singularities along the hyperplane at infinity.
We give a global version of Le-Ramanujam mu-constant theorem for polynomials. Let f_t, (t in [0,1]), be a family of polynomials of n complex variables with isolated singularities, whose coefficients are polynomials in t. We consider the case where some numerical invariants are constant (the affine Milnor number, the Milnor number at infinity, the number of critical values, the number of affine critical values, the number of critical values at infinity). Let n=2, we also suppose the degree of the f_t is a constant, then the polynomials f_0 and f_1 are topologically equivalent. For n>3 we suppos…
We address a metric version of Zariski's multiplicity conjecture at infinity that says that two complex algebraic affine sets which are bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic at infinity must have the same degree. More specifically, we prove that the degree is a bi-Lipschitz invariant at infinity when the bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism has Lipschitz constants close to 1. In particular, we have that a family of complex algebraic sets bi-Lipschitz equisingular at infinity has constant degree. Moreover, we prove that if two polynomials are weakly rugose equivalent at infinity, then they have the same degree. In p…
We consider an equisingularity problem for polynomial families of affine hypersurfaces $X_τ\subset \mathbb C^n$ with (at worst) isolated singularities. We show that the constancy of the global polar invariants $γ^* (X_τ)$ is equivalent to the $t$-equisingularity at infinity, an asymptotic-type equisingularity that we introduce. We prove that $γ^*$-constancy implies C$^\infty$-triviality in the neighbourhood of infinity. We show how the invariants $γ^*$ enter in the description of a CW-complex model of a hypersurface $X_τ$ and therefore provide in particular new invariants at infinity for polyn…
Given a regular map f from a smooth complex variety to the affine line, we define a motivic Milnor fiber at infinity and we compute it in the case of a non degenerate Laurent polynomial for its Newton polyhedra at infinity.
For a polynomial $f$ in two complex variables, we prove that the multi-link at infinity of the 0-fiber $f^{-1}(0)$ is a fibred multi-link if and only if all the values different from 0 are regular at infinity.

Let $F$ be a polynomial mappping from $\mathbb{C}^n$ to $\mathbb{C}^q$ with $n>q$. We study the De Rham cohomology of its fibres and its relative cohomology groups, by introducing a special fibre $F^{-1}(\infty)$ "at infinity" and its cohomology. Let us fix a weighted homogeneous degree on $\mathbb{C}[x_1,...,x_n]$ with strictly positive weights. The fibre at infinity is the zero set of the leading terms of the coordinate functions of $F$. We introduce the cohomology groups $H^k(F^{-1}(\infty))$ of $F$ at infinity. These groups enable us to compute all the other cohomology groups of $F$. For i…
We show that the monodromy operator at infinity plus the decomposition of the homology given by the vanishing cycles completely determine the homology monodromy representation of any complex polynomial.
We consider a continuous family $(f_s)$, $s\in[0,1]$ of complex polynomials in two variables with isolated singularities, that are Newton non-degenerate. We suppose that the Euler characteristic of a generic fiber is constant (or equivalently the sum of the affine Milnor number and the Milnor number at infinity $μ(s)+λ(s)$ is constant). We firstly prove that the set of critical values at infinity depends continuously on $s$, and secondly that the degree of the $f_s$ is constant (up to an algebraic automorphism of $\Cc^2$).
We use topological methods to study various semicontinuity properties of spectra of singular points of plane algebraic curves and of polynomials in two variables at infinity. Using Seifert forms and the Tristram--Levine signatures of links, we reprove (in a slightly weaker version) a result obtained by Steenbrink and Varchenko on semicontinuity of spectrum at infinity. We also relate the spectrum at infinity of a polynomial with spectra of singular points of a chosen fiber.
