Consider a primitive polynomial $f$ in two variables, thought of as a map from the affine plane to the affine line. We study the minimimal compactification of $f$; from our result one deduces in particular that if one of the fibers of $f$ has only one fiber at infinity, then all the fibers of $f$ have a simultaneous resolution of singularities at infinity. From this one gets a very simple proof of the Suzuki-Abhyankar-Moh theorem on the embeddings of the affine line in the plane.
Consider a simple algebraic group G of adjoint type, and its wonderful compactification X. We show that X admits a unique family of minimal rational curves, and we explicitly describe the subfamily consisting of curves through a general point. As an application, we show that X has the target rigidity property when G is not of type A_1 or C.
We study semi-stable sheaves of rank $2$ with Chern class $c_1=0$, $c_2=2$ and $c_3=0$ on the Fano 3-folds $V_4$ of Picard number $1$, degree $4$ and index $2$. We show the moduli space of such sheaves is isomorphic to the moduli space of semi-stable rank $2$ even degree vector bundles on a genus $2$ curve. This provides a natural smooth compatification of the moduli space of Ulrich bundles of rank $2$ on $V_4$.
We give a characterization of toroidal (resp., semi-toric) compactifications due to Ash-Mumford-Rapoport-Tai (resp., Looijenga) as log minimal models and apply it to study weak K-moduli compactifications, giving a different proof to a theorem of Alexeev-Engel. We also discuss towards further generalization, in particular revisit Shah-Sterk compactification of moduli of polarized Enriques surfaces to show compatibility with log K-stability.
We study minimal rational curves on a complex manifold that are tangent to a distribution. In this setting, the variety of minimal rational tangents (VMRT) has to be isotropic with respect to the Levi tensor of the distribution. Our main result is a converse of this: any smooth projective variety isotropic with respect to a vector-valued anti-symmetric form can be realized as VMRT of minimal rational curves tangent to a distribution on a complex manifold. The complex manifold is constructed as a partial equivariant compactification of a metabelian group, which is a result of independent intere…
Let $R_4$ be the space of rational plane curves of degree $4$. In this paper, we obtain a sheaf theoretic compactification of $R_4$ via the space of $α$-semistable pairs on $\mathbb{P}^2$ and its birational relations through wall-crossings of semistable pairs. We obtain the Poincaré polynomial of the compactified space.
We show that a certain moduli space of minimal $A_\infty$-structures coincides with the modular compactification $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{1,n}(n-1)$ of $\mathcal{M}_{1,n}$ constructed by Smyth. In addition, we describe these moduli spaces and the universal curves over them by explicit equations, prove that they are normal and Gorenstein, show that their Picard groups have no torsion and that they have rational singularities if and only if $n\le 11$.
Inspired by the ideas of the minimal model program, Shepherd-Barron, Kollár, and Alexeev have constructed a geometric compactification for the moduli space of surfaces of log general type. In this paper, we discuss one of the simplest examples that fits into this framework: the case of pairs (X,H) consisting of a degree two K3 surface X and an ample divisor H. Specifically, we construct and describe explicitly a geometric compactification $\bar{P_2}$ for the moduli of degree two K3 pairs. This compactification has a natural forgetful map to the Baily-Borel compactification of the moduli space …
In this paper, we completely work out the log minimal model program for the moduli space of stable curves of genus three. We employ a rational multiple $αδ$ of the divisor $δ$ of singular curves as the boundary divisor, construct the log canonical model for the pair $(\bar{\mathcal M}_3, αδ)$ using geometric invariant theory as we vary $α$ from one to zero, and give a modular interpretation of each log canonical model and the birational maps between them. By using the modular description, we are able to identify all but one log canonical models with existing compactifications of $M_3$, some ne…
The main goal of this work is to construct and study a reasonable compactification of the strata of the moduli space of Abelian differentials. This allows us to compute the Kodaira dimension of some strata of the moduli space of Abelian differentials. The main ingredients to study the compactifications of the strata are a version of the plumbing cylinder construction for differential forms and an extension of the parity of the connected components of the strata to the differentials on curves of compact type. We study in detail the compactifications of the hyperelliptic minimal strata and of th…
A non-zero constant Jacobian polynomial map $F=(P,Q):\mathbb{C}^2 \longrightarrow \mathbb{C}^2$ has a polynomial inverse if the component $P$ is a simple polynomial, i.e. if, when $P$ extended to a morphism $p:X\longrightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ of a compactification $X$ of $\mathbb{C}^2$, the restriction of $p$ to each irreducible component $C$ of the compactification divisor $D = X-\mathbb{C}^2$ is either degree 0 or 1.
We study normal analytic compactifications of C^2 and describe their singularities and configuration of curves at infinity, in particular improving and generalizing results of (Brenton, Math. Ann. 206:303--310, 1973). As a by product we give new proofs of Jung's theorem on polynomial automorphisms of C^2 and Remmert and Van de Ven's result that CP^2 is the only smooth analytic compactification of C^2 for which the curve at infinity is irreducible. We also give a complete answer to the question of existence of compactifications of C^2 with prescribed divisorial valuations at infinity. In partic…
We classify all normal G^2_a-surfaces with Picard number one, and characterize which of these surfaces have at worst log canonical, and which have at worst log terminal singularities, answering a question of Hassett and Tschinkel (Int. Math. Res. Not., 1999). We also find all G^2_a-structures on these surfaces and show that these surfaces and their minimal desingularizations have the same G^2_a-structures (modulo equivalence of G^2_a-actions). In particular, we show that some of these surfaces admit one dimensional moduli of G^2_a-structures, answering another question of Hassett and Tschinkel…
Let $(({\mathbb B} / Γ_1)', T(1))$ be á torsion free toroidal compactification with abelian minimal model $(A_1, D(1))$. An arbitrary principal isogeny $μ_a : A_2 \rightarrow A_1$, $a \in {\mathbb C}$ pulls-back $(A_1, D(1))$ to the abelian minimal model $(A_2, D(2))$ of a torsion free toroidal compactification $(({\mathbb B} / Γ_2)', D(2))$. The present work makes use of the isogeny pull-backs of abelian ball quotient models, towards the construction of infinite series of mutually non-birational co-abelian torsion free Galois covers $(({\mathbb B} / Γ_n)', T(n))$ of a ball quotient compactifi…
We construct Landau-Ginzburg models for numerically effective complete intersections in toric manifolds as partial compactifications of families of Laurent polynomials. We show a mirror statement saying that the quantum D-module of the ambient part of the cohomology of the submanifold is isomorphic to an intersection cohomology D-module defined from this partial compactification and we deduce Hodge properties of these differential systems.
We present an effective criterion to determine if a normal analytic compactification of C^2 with one irreducible curve at infinity is algebraic or not. As a by product we establish a correspondence between normal algebraic compactifications of C^2 with one irreducible curve at infinity and algebraic curves contained in C^2 with one place at infinity. Using our criterion we construct pairs of homeomorphic normal analytic surfaces with minimally elliptic singularities such that one of the surfaces is algebraic and the other is not. Our main technical tool is the sequence of "key forms" - a 'glob…
We define a geometrically meaningful compactification of the moduli space of smooth plane curves, which can be calculated explicitly. The basic idea is to regard a plane curve D in P^2 as a pair (P^2,D) of a surface together with a divisor, and allow both the surface and the curve to degenerate. For plane curves of degree d at least 4, we obtain a compactification M_d which is a moduli space of stable pairs (X,D) using the log minimal model program. A stable pair (X,D) consists of a surface X such that -K_X is ample and a divisor D in a given linear system on X with specified singularities. No…
One can consider the Hilbert scheme as a natural compactification of the space of smooth projective curves with fixed Hilbert polynomial. Here we consider a different modular compactification, namely the functor CM parameterizing curves together with a finite map to $\mathbb{P}^n$ that is generically a closed immersion. We prove that CM is an algebraic space by contructing a scheme W and a representable, surjective and smooth map W -> CM. Moreover, we show that CM satisfies the valuative criterion for properness.
Consider a finite dimensional (generally reducible) polynomial representation ρof GL_n. A projective compactification of GL_n is the closure of ρ(GL_n) in the space of all operators defined up to a factor (this class of spaces can be characterized as equivariant projective normal compactifications of GL_n). We give an expicit description for all projective compactifications. We also construct explicitly (in elementary geometrical terms) a universal object for all projective compactifications of GL_n.
For $r \geq 1$ and $\mathbf{n} \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq0}^r\setminus\{\mathbf{0}\}$, we construct a proper complex variety $\overline{2M}_{\mathbf{n}}$. $\overline{2M}_{\mathbf{n}}$ is locally toric, and it is equipped with a forgetful map $\overline{2M}_{\mathbf{n}} \to \overline M_{0,r+1}$. This space is a compactification of $2M_{\mathbf{n}}$, the configuration space of marked vertical lines in $\mathbb{C}^2$ up to translations and dilations. In the appendices, we give several examples and show how the stratification of $\overline{2M}_{\mathbf{n}}$ can be used to recursively compute its virtual…
We classify 'primitive normal compactifications' of C^2 (i.e. normal analytic surfaces containing C^2 for which the curve at infinity is irreducible), compute the moduli space of these surfaces and their groups of auomorphisms. In particular we show that in 'most' of these surfaces C^2 is 'rigidly embedded'. As an application we give a description of 'embedded isomorphism classes' of planar curves with one place at infinity. We also compute the canonical divisor of these surfaces; it turns out that their log discrepancy is related to the Frobenius number of the semigroup of poles along the cur…
We show that the minimal polynomial of a polynomial exponential automorphism F of C^n (i.e. F=exp(D), where D is a locally nilpotent derivation) is of the form μ_F(T)=(T-1)^d, d=min{m \in N: D^m(X_i)=0 for i=1,...,n}.
We study multivariate Mellin transforms of Laurent polynomials by considering special toric compactifications which make their singular structure apparent. This gives a precise description of their convergence domain, refining results of Nilsson, Passare, Berkesch and Forsgård. We also reformulate the geometric sector decomposition approach of Kaneko and Ueda in terms of these compactifications. Specializing to the case of Feynman integrals in the parametric representation, we construct multiple such compactifications given by certain systems of subgraphs. As particular cases, we recover the s…
We study two variants of the following question: "Given two finitely generated subalgebras R_1, R_2 of C[x_1, \ldots, x_n], is their intersection also finitely generated?" We show that the smallest value of $n$ for which there is a counterexample is 2 in the general case, and 3 in the case that R_1 and R_2 are integrally closed. We also explain the relation of this question to the problem of constructing algebraic compactifications of C^n and to the moment problem on semialgebraic subsets of R^n. The counterexample for the general case is a simple modification of a construction of Neena Gupta,…
