The topology of symplectic 4-manifolds is related to that of singular plane curves via the concept of branched covers. Thus, various classification problems concerning symplectic 4-manifolds can be reformulated as questions about singular plane curves. Moreover, using braid monodromy, these can in turn be reformulated in the language of braid group factorizations. While the results mentioned in this paper are not new, we hope that they will stimulate interest in these questions, which remain essentially wide open.
The nth symmetric product of a Riemann surface carries a natural family of Kaehler forms, arising from its interpretation as a moduli space of abelian vortices. We give a new proof of a formula of Manton-Nasir for the cohomology classes of these forms. Further, we show how these ideas generalise to families of Riemann surfaces. These results help to clarify a conjecture of D. Salamon on the relationship between Seiberg-Witten theory on 3-manifolds fibred over the circle and symplectic Floer homology.

After reviewing recent results on symplectic Lefschetz pencils and symplectic branched covers of CP^2, we describe a new construction of maps from symplectic manifolds of any dimension to CP^2 and the associated monodromy invariants. We also show that a dimensional induction process makes it possible to describe any compact symplectic manifold by a series of words in braid groups and a word in a symmetric group.
These notes accompany a lecture about the topology of symplectic (and other) quotients. We discuss symplectic cutting for Hamiltonian actions of non-Abelian compact groups. By using a degeneration based on the Vinberg monoid we give, in good cases, a global quotient description of a surgery construction introduced by Woodward and Meinrenken, and show it can be interpreted in algebro-geometric terms. A key ingredient is the `universal cut' of the cotangent bundle of the group itself, which is identified with a moduli space of framed bundles on chains of projective lines recently introduced by the authors.
We consider the derived categories of modules over a certain family A_m of graded rings, and Floer cohomology of Lagrangian intersections in the symplectic manifolds which are the Milnor fibres of simple singularities of type A_m. Let $M$ be a symplectic manifold, equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a torus $T$. We give an explicit formula for the rational cohomology ring of the symplectic quotient $M//T$ in terms of the cohomology ring of $M$ and fixed point data. Under some restrictions, our formulas apply to integral cohomology. In certain cases these methods enable us to show that the cohomology of the reduced space is torsion-free.
We construct a family of pairs of non-isotopic symplectic surfaces in the standard symplectic $4$-disk such that they are bounded by the same transverse knot in the standard contact $3$-sphere and fundamental groups of their complements are isomorphic. In the appendix, we prove explicitly that one can obtain a symplectic surface in the standard symplectic $4$-disk from a braided surface in a bidisk.
