We prove that every symplectic 4-manifold admits a trisection that is compatible with the symplectic structure in the sense that the symplectic form induces a Weinstein structure on each of the three sectors of the trisection. Along the way, we show that a (potentially singular) symplectic braided surface in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ can be symplectically isotoped into bridge position.
This is an expository account of the author's collaboration with Rob Kirby leading up to the theory of trisections of smooth 4-manifolds. This article was written for inclusion in an upcoming issue of Celebratio Mathematica dedicated to Rob Kirby's mathematical work.
We show that a stabilized convex symplectic (also called Liouville) manifold with the homotopy type of a half dimensional CW-complex is symplectomorphic to a flexible Weinstein manifold.
Donaldson showed that every closed symplectic 4-manifold can be given the structure of a topological Lefschetz pencil. Gay and Kirby showed that every closed 4-manifold has a trisection. In this paper we relate these two structure theorems, showing how to construct a trisection directly from a topological Lefschetz pencil. This trisection is such that each of the three sectors is a regular neighborhood of a regular fiber of the pencil. This is a 4-dimensional analog of the following trivial 3-dimensional result: For every open book decomposition of a 3-manifold M, there is a decomposition of M…
This is a very biased and incomplete survey of some basic notions, old and new results, as well as open problems concerning Weinstein symplectic manifolds.
In this article we study proper symplectic and iso-symplectic embeddings of $4$--manifolds in $6$--manifolds. We show that a closed orientable smooth $4$--manifold admitting a Lefschetz fibration over $\C P^1$ admits a symplectic embedding in the symplectic manifold $(\C P^1 \times \C P^1 \times \C P^1, ω_{pr}),$ where $ω_{pr}$ is the product symplectic form on $\C P^1 \times \C P^1 \times \C P^1.$ We also show that there exists a sub-critical Weinstein $6$--manifold in which all finite type Weinstein $4$--manifolds admit iso-symplectic embeddings.
We give a combinatorial description of the Legendrian contact homology algebra associated to a Legendrian link in $S^1\times S^2$ or any connected sum $\#^k(S^1\times S^2)$, viewed as the contact boundary of the Weinstein manifold obtained by attaching 1-handles to the 4-ball. In view of the surgery formula for symplectic homology, this gives a combinatorial description of the symplectic homology of any 4-dimensional Weinstein manifold (and of the linearized contact homology of its boundary). We also study examples and discuss the invariance of the Legendrian homology algebra under deformation…
We give a new characterization of symplectic surfaces in CP^2 via bridge trisections. Specifically, a minimal genus surface in CP^2 is smoothly isotopic to a symplectic surface if and only if it is smoothly isotopic to a surface in transverse bridge position. We discuss several potential applications, including the classification of unit 2-knots, establishing the triviality of Gluck twists, the symplectic isotopy problem, Auroux's proof that every symplectic 4-manifold is a branched cover over CP^2, and the existence of Weinstein trisections. The proof exploits a well-known connection between …
We show how to encode a Weinstein 4-manifold using a multisection diagram with divides, which is a sequence of cut systems on a surface, together with a separating collection of curves. We give two algorithms to construct a multisection diagram with divides of a given Weinstein manifold, one starting with a Kirby-Weinstein handle decomposition and one starting with a positive, allowable Lefschetz fibration (PALF). Through the connections with PALFs, we define a monodromy of a multisection and show how to symplectically carry out monodromy substitution on multisections with divides.

In 1998, Gompf described a Stein domain structure on the disk cotangent bundle of any closed surface S, by a Legendrian handlebody diagram. We prove that Gompf's Stein domain is symplectomorphic to the disk cotangent bundle equipped with its canonical symplectic structure and the boundary of this domain is contactomorphic to the unit cotangent bundle of S equipped with its canonical contact structure. As a corollary, we obtain a surgery diagram for the canonical contact structure on the unit cotangent bundle of S.
We introduce and discuss notions of regularity and flexibility for Lagrangian manifolds with Legendrian boundary in Weinstein domains. There is a surprising abundance of flexible Lagrangians. In turn, this leads to new constructions of Legendrians submanifolds and Weinstein manifolds. For instance, many closed $n$-manifolds of dimension $n>2$ can be realized as exact Lagrangian submanifolds of $T^*S^n$ with possibly exotic Weinstein symplectic structures. These Weinstein structures on $T^* S^n$, infinitely many of which are distinct, are formed by a single handle attachment to the standard $2n…
On a Weinstein manifold, we define a constructible co/sheaf of categories on the skeleton. The construction works with arbitrary coefficients, and depends only on the homotopy class of a section of the Lagrangian Grassmannian of the stable symplectic normal bundle. The definition is as follows. Take any, possibly high codimension, exact embedding into a cosphere bundle. Thicken to a hypersurface, and consider the Kashiwara-Schapira stack along the thickened skeleton. Pull back along the inclusion of the original skeleton. Gromov's h-principle for contact embeddings guarantees existence and uni…
In this article we study Weinstein structures endowed with a Lefschetz fibration in terms of the Legendrian front projection. First we provide a systematic recipe for translating from a Weinstein Lefschetz bifibration to a Legendrian handlebody. Then we present several applications of this technique to symplectic topology. This includes the detection of flexibility and rigidity for several families of Weinstein manifolds and the existence of closed exact Lagrangian submanifolds. In addition, we prove that the Koras--Russell cubic is Stein deformation equivalent to affine complex 3-space and ve…
We present explicit algorithms for simplifying the topology of indefinite fibrations on 4-manifolds, which include broken Lefschetz fibrations and indefinite Morse 2-functions. The algorithms consist of sequences of moves, which modify indefinite fibrations in smooth 1-parameter families. In particular, given an arbitrary broken Lefschetz fibration, we show how to turn it to one with directed and embedded round (indefinite fold) image, and to one with all the fibers and the round locus connected. We also show how to realize any given null-homologous 1-dimensional submanifold with prescribed lo…
We construct four-dimensional symplectic cobordisms between contact three-manifolds generalizing an example of Eliashberg. One key feature is that any handlebody decomposition of one of these cobordisms must involve three-handles. The other key feature is that these cobordisms contain chains of symplectically embedded two-spheres of square zero. This, together with standard gauge theory, is used to show that any contact three-manifold of non-zero torsion (in the sense of Giroux) cannot be strongly symplectically fillable. John Etnyre pointed out to the author that the same argument together wi…
We apply Menke's JSJ decomposition for symplectic fillings to several families of contact 3-manifolds. Among other results, we complete the classification up to orientation-preserving diffeomorphism of strong symplectic fillings of lens spaces. We show that exact symplectic fillings of contact manifolds obtained by surgery on certain Legendrian negative cables are the result of attaching a Weinstein 2-handle to an exact filling of a lens space. For large families of contact structures on Seifert fibered spaces over $S^2$, we reduce the problem of classifying exact symplectic structures to the …
A standard convexity condition on the boundary of a symplectic manifold involves an induced positive contact form (and contact structure) on the boundary; the corresponding concavity condition involves an induced negative contact form. We present two methods of symplectically attaching 2-handles to convex boundaries of symplectic 4-manifolds along links transverse to the induced contact structures. One method results in concave boundaries and depends on a fibration of the link complement over S^1; in this case the handles can be attached with any framing larger than a lower bound determined by…
In this article we prove that iterated renormalisations of $\mathcal{C}^r$ circle diffeomorphisms with $d$ breaks, $r>2$, with given size of breaks, converge to an invariant family of piecewise Moebius maps, of dimension $2d$. We prove that this invariant family identifies with a \textit{relative character variety} $χ(π_1 Σ, \mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R}), \mathbf{h})$ where $Σ$ is a $d$-holed torus, and that the renormalisation operator identifies with a sub-action of the mapping class group $\mathrm{MCG}(Σ)$. This action is known to preserves a symplectic form, thanks to the work of Guruprasad-H…
