Complete constant positive scalar curvature metrics on S^n - {p_1, ..., p_k} admit a definite asymptotic structure; i.e. the metric is asymptotic to a specific S^{n-1}-invariant metric near the puncture points. This allows one to glue together two such metrics near their puncture points, provided the asymptotic structures match, and create a metric whose scalar curvature is very close to constant. In this paper we perturb this new metric to obtain a metric of constant scalar curvature.
The gluing technique is used to construct hypersurfaces in Euclidean space having approximately constant prescribed mean curvature. These surfaces are perturbations of unions of finitely many spheres of the same radius assembled end-to-end along a line segment. The condition on the existence of these hypersurfaces is the vanishing of the sum of certain integral moments of the spheres with respect the prescribed mean curvature function.
The techniques developed by Butscher in arXiv:math/0703469 for constructing constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces in the (n+1)-sphere by gluing together spherical building blocks are generalized to handle less symmetric initial configurations. The outcome is that the approximately CMC hypersurface obtained by gluing the initial configuration together can be perturbed into an exactly CMC hypersurface only when certain global geometric conditions are met. These `balancing conditions' are analogous to those that must be satisfied in the `classical' context of gluing constructions of CMC hyp…
We show that two smooth nearby Riemannian metrics can be glued interpolating their scalar curvature. The resulting smooth metric is the same as the starting ones outside the gluing region and has scalar curvature interpolating between the original ones. One can then glue metrics while maintaining inequalities satisfied by the scalar curvature. We also glue asymptotically Euclidean metrics to Schwarzschild ones and the same for asymptotically Delaunay metrics, keeping bounds on the scalar curvature, if any. This extend the Corvino gluing near infinity to non-constant scalar curvature metrics.
Four constructions of constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces in the (n+1)-sphere are given, which should be considered analogues of `classical' constructions that are possible for CMC hypersurfaces in Euclidean space. First, Delaunay-like hypersurfaces, consisting roughly of a chain of hyperspheres winding multiple times around an equator, are shown to exist for all values of the mean curvature. Second, a hypersurface is constructed which consists of two chains of spheres winding around a pair of orthogonal equators, showing that Delaunay-like hypersurfaces can be fused together in a symm…
We carry out a Carlotto-Schoen-type gluing with interpolating scalar curvature on cone-like sets, or deformations thereof, in the category of smooth Riemannian asymptotically Euclidean metrics.
In this paper we prove that in the class of metric measure spaces with Alexandrov curvature bounded from below the Riemannian curvature-dimension condition $RCD(K,N)$ with $K\in \mathbb{R}$ and $N\in [1,\infty)$ is preserved under doubling and gluing constructions.
We glue two manifolds which have curvature operators at least k (in the sense of eigenvalues) along their common boundary. We show that if the sum of the second fundamental forms of the boundary is positive semidefinite, then the curvature operator of the resulting manifold is at least k up to an arbitrarily small error term. Similar results hold for Ricci, scalar, bi, isotropic and flag curvature, respectively.
We construct Lagrangian translating solitons by desingularizing the intersection points between Lagrangian Grim Reaper cylinders with the same phase using special Lagrangian Lawlor necks. The resulting Lagrangian translating solitons could have arbitrarily many ends and non-contractible loops.
We construct examples of compact and one-ended constant mean curvature surfaces with large mean curvature in Riemannian manifolds with axial symmetry by gluing together small spheres positioned end-to-end along a geodesic. Such surfaces cannot exist in Euclidean space, but we show that the gradient of the ambient scalar curvature acts as a `friction term' which permits the usual analytic gluing construction to be carried out.
We establish a gluing theorem for solutions of a Yamabe problem for manifolds with boundary studied by Escobar in the 90's. Given two scalar-flat Riemannian manifolds whose boundary has zero mean curvature and sharing a submanifold $K$, we produce the generalized connected sum along $K$. On this third manifold we produce a family of scalar-flat metrics with small, constant mean curvature on the boundary which are close to the original metrics in the $C^2$ sense. Under extra geometric conditions on the original manifolds, we can arrange for this family to also have vanishing mean curvature on t…
Two complete graphs are connected by adding some edges. The obtained graph is called the gluing graph. The more we add edges, the larger the Ricci curvature on it becomes. We calculate the Ricci curvature of each edge on the gluing graph and obtain the least number of edges that result in the gluing graph having positive Ricci curvature.
In 1978, Gibbons-Pope and Page proposed a physical picture for the Ricci flat Kähler metrics on the K3 surface based on a gluing construction. In this construction, one starts from a flat torus with $16$ orbifold points, and resolves the orbifold singularities by gluing in $16$ small Eguchi-Hanson manifolds which all have the same orientation. This construction was carried out rigorously by Topiwala, LeBrun-Singer, and Donaldson. In 1981, Page asked whether the above construction can be modified by reversing the orientations of some of the Eguchi-Hanson manifolds. This is a subtle question: if…
In the proof of the BFK-gluing formula for zeta-determinants of Laplacians there appears a real polynomial whose constant term is an important ingredient in the gluing formula. This polynomial is determined by geometric data on an arbitrarily small collar neighborhood of a cutting hypersurface. In this paper we express the coefficients of this polynomial in terms of the scalar and principal curvatures of the cutting hypersurface embedded in the manifold when this hypersurface is 2-dimensional. Similarly, we express some coefficients of the heat trace asymptotics of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann ope…
We construct constant mean curvature surfaces in euclidean space by gluing n half Delaunay surfaces to a non-degenerate minimal n-noid, using the DPW method.
Perelman's doubling theorem asserts that the metric space obtained by gluing along their boundaries two copies of an Alexandrov space with curvature $\geq κ$ is an Alexandrov space with the same dimension and satisfying the same curvature lower bound. We show that this result cannot be extended to metric measure spaces satisfying synthetic Ricci curvature bounds in the $\mathrm{MCP}$ sense. The counterexample is given by the Grushin half-plane, which satisfies the $\mathrm{MCP}(0,N)$ if and only if $N\geq 4$, while its double satisfies the $\mathrm{MCP}(0,N)$ if and only if $N\geq 5$.
For a compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g_2)$ with constant $Q$-curvature of dimension $n\geq 6$ satisfying nondegeneracy condition, we show that one can construct many examples of constant $Q$-curvature manifolds by gluing construction. We provide a general procedure of gluing together $(M,g_2)$ with any compact manifold $(N, g_1)$ satisfying a geometric assumption. In particular, we can prove that there exists a metric with constant $Q$-curvature on the connected sum $N #M$.
We establish a general gluing theorem for constant mean curvature solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations. This allows one to take connected sums of solutions or to glue a handle (wormhole) onto any given solution. Away from this handle region, the initial data sets we produce can be made as close as desired to the original initial data sets. These constructions can be made either when the initial manifold is compact or asymptotically Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic, with suitable corresponding conditions on the extrinsic curvature. In the compact setting a mild nondegener…
We construct a new class of complete constant mean curvature surfaces in R^3. These are geometrically different than the surfaces constructed by Kapouleas' gluing technique. These are obtained by piecing together half-Delaunay surfaces to the truncations of minimal k-noids. The gluing techniques are new: the surfaces are obtained by matching Cauchy data from the infinite dimensional family of exact solutions of the problem on each of the component pieces. These surfaces are also proved to be nondegenerate in the CMC moduli space.
We show that asymptotically hyperbolic solutions of the Einstein constraint equations with constant mean curvature can be glued in such a way that their asymptotic regions are connected.
We give new and rather general gluing theorems for anti-self-dual (ASD) conformal structures, following the method suggested by Floer. The main result is a gluing theorem for pairs of conformally ASD manifolds `joined' across a common piece (union of connected components) of their boundaries. This theorem genuinely operates in the b-category (in the sense of Melrose) and in general the boundary of the joined manifold can be non-empty. The resulting metric is a conformally ASD b-metric or, in more traditional language, a complete conformally ASD metric with cylindrical asymptotics. We also stud…
We address the classification of ancient solutions to the Gauss curvature flow under the assumption that the solutions are contained in a cylinder of bounded cross section. For each cylinder of convex bounded cross-section, we show that there are only two ancient solutions which are asymptotic to this cylinder: the non-compact translating soliton and the compact oval solution obtained by gluing two translating solitons approaching each other from time $-\infty$ from two opposite ends.
In this paper we survey a number of recent results concerning the existence and moduli spaces of solutions of various geometric problems on noncompact manifolds. The three problems which we discuss in detail are: I. Complete properly immersed minimal surfaces in $\RR^3$ with finite total curvature. II. Complete embedded surfaces of constant mean curvature in $\RR^3$ with finite topology. III. Complete conformal metrics of constant positive scalar curvature on $M^n \setminus Λ$, where $M^n$ is a compact Riemannian manifold, $n\geq3$ and $\Lam \subset M$ is closed. The existence results we discu…
It has been showed by Byde that it is possible to attach a Delaunay-type end to a compact nondegenerate manifold of positive constant scalar curvature, provided it is locally conformally flat in a neighborhood of the attaching point. The resulting manifold is noncompact with the same constant scalar curvature. The main goal of this paper is to generalize this result. We will construct a one-parameter family of solutions to the positive singular Yamabe problem for any compact non-degenerate manifold with Weyl tensor vanishing to sufficiently high order at the singular point. If the dimension is…
In this paper we continue our study about the existence of Kaehler metrics of constant scalar curvature (Kcsc) on blow ups at points of compact manifolds with Kcsc metrics started in math.DG/0411522. In this second part we deal with the case of base manifolds with holomorphic vector fields and we give sufficient conditions for the position of points to be blown up to preserve the Kcsc property. These results are obtained by a gluing procedure. We give explicit examples of our construction, in particular getting optimal results in the cases of P^n and P^n x M, where M is a Kcsc compact manifold…
We establish a general `gluing theorem', which states roughly that if two nondegenerate constant mean curvature surfaces are juxtaposed, so that their tangent planes are parallel and very close to one another, but oppositely oriented, then there is a new constant mean curvature surface quite near to this configuration (in the Hausdorff topology), but which is a topological connected sum of the two surfaces. Here nondegeneracy refers to the invertibility of the linearized mean curvature operator. This paper treats the simplest context for our result namely when the surfaces are compact with non…
The Clifford tori in the 3-sphere are a one-parameter family of flat, two-dimensional, constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces. This paper demonstrates that new, topologically non-trivial CMC surfaces resembling a pair of neighbouring Clifford tori connected at a sub-lattice consisting of at least two points by small catenoidal bridges can be constructed by perturbative PDE methods. That is, one can create an approximate solution by gluing a rescaled catenoid into the neighbourhood of each sub-lattice point; and then one can show that a perturbation of this approximate submanifold exists which …
We prove existence in the Minkowski space of entire spacelike hypersurfaces with constant negative scalar curvature and given set of lightlike directions at infinity; we also construct the entire scalar curvature flow with prescribed set of lightlike directions at infinity, and prove that the flow converges to a spacelike hypersurface with constant scalar curvature. The proofs rely on barriers construction and a priori estimates.
In this paper we investigate complete critical metrics of the $L^{2}$-norm of the scalar curvature. We prove that any complete critical metric with positive scalar curvature has constant scalar curvature and we characterize critical metrics with nonnegative scalar curvature in dimension three and four.
The (n+1)-sphere contains a simple family of constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces which are products of lower-dimensional spheres called the generalized Clifford hypersurfaces. This paper demonstrates that new, topologically non-trivial CMC hypersurfaces resembling a pair of neighbouring generalized Clifford tori connected to each other by small catenoidal bridges at a sufficiently symmetric configuration of points can be constructed by perturbative PDE methods. That is, one can create an approximate solution by gluing a rescaled catenoid into the neighbourhood of each point; and then o…
We prove that many complete, noncompact, constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces $f:Σ\to \R^3$ are nondegenerate; that is, the Jacobi operator $Δ_f + |A_f|^2$ has no $L^2$ kernel. In fact, if $Σ$ has genus zero and $f(Σ)$ is contained in a half-space, then we find an explicit upper bound for the dimension of the $L^2$ jernel in terms of the number of non-cylindrical ends. Our main tool is a conjugation operation on Jacobi fields which linearizes the conjugate cousin construction. Consequences include partial regularity for CMC moduli space, a larger class of CMC surfaces to use in gluing constr…
In this paper, we consider the scalar curvature of Yamabe solitons. In particular we show that, with natural conditions and non positive Ricci curvature, any complete Yamabe soliton has constant scalar curvature, namely, it is a Yamabe metric. We also show that the quadratic decay at infinity of the Ricci curvature of a complete non-compact Yamabe soliton has non-negative scalar curvature. A new proof of Kazdan-Warner condition is also presented.
In this paper, we consider the indefinite scalar curvature problem on $R^n$. We propose new conditions on the prescribing scalar curvature function such that the scalar curvature problem on $R^n$ (similarly, on $S^n$) has at least one solution. The key observation in our proof is that we use the bifurcation method to get a large solution and then after establishing the Harnack inequality for solutions near the critical points of the prescribed scalar curvature and taking limit, we find the nontrivial positive solution to the indefinite scalar curvature problem.
This paper is concerned with the existence of constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics on blow ups at finitely many points of compact manifolds which already carry constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics. We also consider the desingularization of isolated quotient singularities of compact orbifolds which already carry constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics.
This paper is to study the conformal scalar curvature equation on complete noncompact Riemannian manifold of nonpositive curvature. We derive some estimates and properties of supersolutions of the scalar curvature equation, and obtain some nonexistence results for complete solutions of scalar curvature equation.
We present a local gluing construction for general relativistic initial data sets. The method applies to generic initial data, in a sense which is made precise. In particular the trace of the extrinsic curvature is not assumed to be constant near the gluing points, which was the case for previous such constructions. No global conditions on the initial data sets such as compactness, completeness, or asymptotic conditions are imposed. As an application, we prove existence of spatially compact, maximal globally hyperbolic, vacuum space-times without any closed constant mean curvature spacelike hy…
In this paper, we consider the problem of prescribing scalar curvature on n-sphere. Assume that the candidate curvature function $f$, which is allowed to change sign, satisfies some kind of Morse index or symmetry condition. By studying the well-known scalar curvature flow, we are able to prove that the flow converges to a metric with the prescribed function $f$ as its scalar curvature.
We give existence results for solutions of the prescribed scalar curvature equation on $S^3$, when the curvature function is a positive Morse function and satisfies an index-count condition.
We show that no exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$ admits a complete Riemannian metric with uniformly positive isotropic curvature and with bounded geometry. This is essentially a corollary of the main result in [Hu1], and was stated in [Hu2] without proof. In the process of the proof we also show that the diffeomorphism type of an infinite connected sum of some connected smooth $n$-manifolds ($n\geq 2$) according to a locally finite graph does not depend on the gluing maps used.
We develop estimates for the equation of scalar curvature of singular metrics with cone angle $β>1$, in a big and semi-positive cohomology class on a Kähler manifold. We further derive the Laplacian estimate for the scalar curvature equation of degenerate Kähler metrics. We then have several applications of these estimates on the singular constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics, which also include the singular Kähler-Einstein metrics.
We first present a warped product manifold with boundary to show the non-uniqueness of the positive constant scalar curvature and positive constant boundary mean curvature equation. Next, we construct a smooth counterexample to show that the compactness of the set of "lower energy" solutions to the above equation fails when the dimension of the manifold is not less than $62$.
On Riemannian manifolds of dimension 4, for prescribed scalar curvature equation, under lipschitzian condition on the prescribed curvature, we have an uniform estimate for the solutions of the equation if we control their minimas.
In this paper we analyze the behavior of the distance function under Ricci flows whose scalar curvature is uniformly bounded. We will show that on small time-intervals the distance function is $\frac12$-Hölder continuous in a uniform sense. This implies that the distance function can be extended continuously up to the singular time.
We study the problem of deforming a Riemannian metric to a conformal one with nonzero constant scalar curvature and nonzero constant boundary mean curvature on a compact manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$. We prove the existence of such conformal metrics in the cases of $n=6,7$ or the manifold is spin and some other remaining ones left by Escobar. Furthermore, in the positive Yamabe constant case, by normalizing the scalar curvature to be $1$, there exists a sequence of conformal metrics such that their constant boundary mean curvatures go to $+\infty$.
The article contains a brief description on the study of conformal scalar curvature equations, and discusses selected topics and questions concerning the equations in open spaces.
We obtain a priori estimates for solutions to the prescribed scalar curvature equation on $S^3$. The usual non-degeneracy assumption on the curvature function is replaced by a new condition, which is necessary and sufficient for the existence of a priori estimates, when the curvature function is a positive Morse function.
The theory of complete surfaces of (nonzero) constant mean curvature in $\RR^3$ has progressed markedly in the last decade. This paper surveys a number of these developments in the setting of Alexandrov embedded surfaces; the focus is on gluing constructions and moduli space theory, and the analytic techniques on which these results depend. The last section contains some new results about smoothing the moduli space and about CMC surfaces in asymptotically Euclidean manifolds.
We construct the first examples of complete, properly embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ with finite total curvature and positive genus. These are constructed by gluing copies of horizontal catenoids or other nondegenerate summands. We also establish that every horizontal catenoid is nondegenerate. Finally, using the same techniques, we are able to produce properly embedded minimal surfaces with infinitely many ends. Each annular end has finite total curvature and is asymptotic to a vertical totally geodesic plane.
