Schützenberger's jeu de taquin is an algorithm on the structure of tableaux, which transforms a skew tableau into a Young one by local transformation rules on the columns of the tableaux. This algorithm defines an equivalence relation on tableaux compatible with the plactic congruence, and gives a proof of the Littlewood-Richardson rule on Schur polynomials. In this article, we introduce the notion of string of columns rewriting system as mechanism of transformations of glued sequences of columns. We describe the execution of the jeu de taquin algorithm as rewriting paths of a string of column…
We give a backward jeu de taquin slide analogue on semistandard reverse composition tableaux. These tableaux were first studied by Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg when defining quasisymmetric Schur functions. Our algorithm for performing backward jeu de taquin slides on semistandard reverse composition tableaux results in a natural operator on compositions that we call the jdt operator. This operator in turn gives rise to a new poset structure on compositions whose maximal chains we enumerate. As an application, we also give a noncommutative Pieri rule for noncommutative Schur funct…
This paper presents a combinatorial study of the super plactic monoid of type A, which is related to the representations of the general linear Lie superalgebra. We introduce the analogue of the Schützenberger's jeu de taquin on the structure of super tableaux over a signed alphabet. We show that this procedure which transforms super skew tableaux into super Young tableaux is compatible with the super plactic congruence and it is confluent. We deduce properties relating the super jeu de taquin to insertion algorithms on super tableaux. Moreover, we introduce the super evacuation procedure as an…
For their bijective proof of the hook-length formula for the number of standard tableaux of a fixed shape Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii define a modified jeu de taquin which transforms an arbitrary filling of the Ferrers diagram with $1,2,...,n$ (tabloid) into a standard tableau. Their definition relies on a total order of the cells in the Ferrers diagram induced by a special standard tableau, however, this definition also makes sense for the total order induced by any other standard tableau. Given two standard tableaux $P,Q$ of the same shape we show that the number of tabloids which result i…
Using a modified version of jeu de taquin, Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii gave a bijective proof of the hook-length formula for counting standard Young tableaux of fixed shape. In this paper we consider a natural extension of jeu de taquin to arbitrary posets. Given a poset P, jeu de taquin defines a map from the set of bijective labelings of the poset elements with $\{1,2,...,|P|\}$ to the set of linear extensions of the poset. One question of particular interest is for which posets this map yields each linear extension equally often. We analyze the double-tailed diamond poset $D_{m,n}$ and sh…
Irreducible characters in the symmetric group are of special interest in combinatorics. They can be expressed either combinatorially with ribbon tableaux, or algebraically with contents. In this paper, these two expressions are related in a combinatorial way. We first introduce a fine structure in the famous jeu de taquin called "trace forest", with which we are able to count certain types of ribbon tableaux, leading to a simple bijective proof of a character evaluation formula in terms of contents that dates back to Frobenius (1901). Inspired by this proof, we give an inductive scheme that gi…
We introduce a theory of jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux, extending fundamental work of [Schützenberger '77] for standard Young tableaux. We apply this to give a new combinatorial rule for the K-theory Schubert calculus of Grassmannians via K-theoretic jeu de taquin, providing an alternative to the rules of [Buch '02] and others. This rule naturally generalizes to give a conjectural root-system uniform rule for any minuscule flag variety G/P, extending [Thomas-Yong '06]. We also present analogues of results of Fomin, Haiman, Schensted and Schützenberger.
The Wronskian associates to d linearly independent polynomials of degree at most n, a non-zero polynomial of degree at most d(n-d). This can be viewed as giving a flat, finite morphism from the Grassmannian Gr(d,n) to projective space of the same dimension. In this paper, we study the monodromy groupoid of this map. When the roots of the Wronskian are real, we show that the monodromy is combinatorially encoded by Schutzenberger's jeu de taquin; hence we obtain new geometric interpretations and proofs of a number of results from jeu de taquin theory, including the Littlewood-Richardson rule.
The direct sum map Gr(a,n) x Gr(b,m) -> Gr(a+b,m+n) on Grassmannians induces a K-theory pullback that defines the splitting coefficients. We geometrically explain an identity from [Buch '02] between the splitting coefficients and the Schubert structure constants for products of Schubert structure sheaves. This is related to the topic of product and splitting coefficients for Schubert boundary ideal sheaves. Our main results extend jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux [Thomas-Yong '09] by proving transparent analogues of [Schützenberger '77]'s fundamental theorems on well-definedness of rectif…
We investigate Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm (RSK) and Schützenberger's jeu de taquin in the infinite setup. We show that the recording tableau in RSK defines an isomorphism of the following two dynamical systems: (i) a sequence of i.i.d. random letters equipped with Bernoulli shift, and (ii) a random infinite Young tableau (with the distribution given by Vershik-Kerov measure, corresponding to some Thoma character of the infinite symmetric group) equipped with jeu de taquin transformation. As a special case we recover the results on non-colliding random walks and multidimensional Pitman …
We use Kashiwara's theory of crystal bases to study plactic monoids for $U_{q}(so_{2n+1})$ and $U_{q}(so_{2n})$. Simultaneously we describe a Schensted type correspondence in the crystal graphs of tensor powers of vector and spin representations and we derive a Jeu de Taquin for type $B$ from the Sheats sliding algorithm.
We present a proof of a Littlewood-Richardson rule for the K-theory of odd orthogonal Grassmannians OG(n,2n+1), as conjectured in [Thomas-Yong '09]. Specifically, we prove that rectification using the jeu de taquin for increasing shifted tableaux introduced there, is well-defined and gives rise to an associative product. Recently, [Buch-Ravikumar '09] proved a Pieri rule for OG(n,2n+1) that [Feigenbaum-Sergel '09] showed confirms a special case of the conjecture. Together, these results imply the aforementioned conjecture.
We introduce edge labeled Young tableaux. Our main results provide a corresponding analogue of [Schützenberger '77]'s theory of jeu de taquin. These are applied to the equivariant Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Reinterpreting, we present new (semi)standard tableaux to study factorial Schur polynomials, after [Biedenharn-Louck '89], [Macdonald '92] and [Goulden-Greene '94] and others. Consequently, we obtain new combinatorial rules for the Schubert structure coefficients, complementing work of [Molev-Sagan '99], [Knutson-Tao '03], [Molev '08] and [Kreiman '09]. We also describe a conjectur…
In this paper, we study tropical-theoretic aspects of the ``rectification algorithm'' on skew Young tableaux. It is shown that the algorithm is interpreted as a time evolution of some tropical integrable system. By using this fact, we construct a new combinatorial map that is essentially equivalent to the rectification algorithm. Some of properties of the rectification can be seen more clearly via this map. For example, the uniqueness of a rectification boils down to an easy combinatorial problem. Our method is mainly based on the two previous researches: the theory of geometric tableaux by No…
We establish a combinatorial connection between the real geometry and the $K$-theory of complex Schubert curves $S(λ_\bullet)$, which are one-dimensional Schubert problems defined with respect to flags osculating the rational normal curve. In a previous paper, the second author showed that the real geometry of these curves is described by the orbits of a map $ω$ on skew tableaux, defined as the commutator of jeu de taquin rectification and promotion. In particular, the real locus of the Schubert curve is naturally a covering space of $\mathbb{RP}^1$, with $ω$ as the monodromy operator. We prov…
There exists a well-known hook-length formula for calculating the dimensions of 2D Young diagrams. Unfortunately, the analogous formula for 3D case is unknown. We introduce an approach for calculating the estimations of dimensions of three-dimensional Young diagrams also known as plane partitions. The most difficult part of this task is the calculation of co-transition probabilities for a central Markov process. We propose an algorithm for approximate calculation of these probabilities. It generates numerous random paths to a given diagram. In case the generated paths are uniformly distributed…

We study an infinite version of the "jeu de taquin" sliding game, which can be thought of as a natural measure-preserving transformation on the set of infinite Young tableaux equipped with the Plancherel probability measure. We use methods from representation theory to show that the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth ($\operatorname {RSK}$) algorithm gives an isomorphism between this measure-preserving dynamical system and the one-sided shift dynamics on a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables distributed uniformly on the unit interval. We also show that the jeu de taquin …
It is known that the right key of a Kashiwara-Nakashima tableau can be computed using the Lecouvey-Sheats symplectic jeu de taquin. Motivated by Willis' direct way of computing type A right keys, we also give a way of computing symplectic right keys without the use of jeu de taquin.
Based on Thomas and Yong's K-theoretic jeu de taquin algorithm, we prove a uniform Littlewood-Richardson rule for the K-theoretic Schubert structure constants of all minuscule homogeneous spaces. Our formula is new in all types. For the main examples of Grassmannians of type A and maximal orthogonal Grassmannians it has the advantage that the tableaux to be counted can be recognized without reference to the jeu de taquin algorithm.
We present an adaptation of jeu de taquin and promotion for arbitrary fillings of moon polyominoes. Using this construction we show various symmetry properties of such fillings taking into account the lengths of longest increasing and decreasing chains. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Jakob Jonsson. We also relate our construction to the one recently employed by Christian Krattenthaler, thus generalising his results.
Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals are colored directed graphs encoding the structure of certain finite-dimensional representations of affine Lie algebras. A tensor products of column shape Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals has recently been realized in a uniform way, for all untwisted affine types, in terms of the quantum alcove model. We enhance this model by using it to give a uniform realization of the combinatorial $R$-matrix, i.e., the unique affine crystal isomorphism permuting factors in a tensor product of KR crystals. In other words, we are generalizing to all Lie types Schützenberger's slidi…
We define a set of operations called crystal operations on matrices with entries either in {0,1} or in N. There are horizontal and vertical crystal operations, giving rise to two commuting structures of a crystal graph on these matrices. They provide a new perspective on many aspects of the RSK correspondence and its dual, and related constructions. Under a straightforward encoding of semistandard tableaux by matrices, the operations correspond to crystal operations on tableaux, respectively to individual moves occurring during a jeu de taquin slide. We show that the (dual) RSK correspondence …
We define and study the Plancherel-Hecke probability measure on Young diagrams; the Hecke algorithm of [Buch-Kresch-Shimozono-Tamvakis-Yong '06] is interpreted as a polynomial-time exact sampling algorithm for this measure. Using the results of [Thomas-Yong '07] on jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux, a symmetry property of the Hecke algorithm is proved, in terms of longest strictly increasing/decreasing subsequences of words. This parallels classical theorems of [Schensted '61] and of [Knuth '70], respectively, on the Schensted and Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithms. We investigate, and co…
In this paper, we continue the development of a new combinatorial model for the irreducible characters of a complex semisimple Lie group. This model, which will be referred to as the alcove path model, can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. It leads to an extensive generalization of the combinatorics of irreducible characters from Lie type A (where the combinatorics is based on Young tableaux, for instance) to arbitrary type. The main results of this paper are: (1) a combinatorial description of the crystal graphs corresponding to the irreducible representations …
