This paper discusses the construction of a generalized Alexander polynomial for virtual knots and links, and the reformulation of this invariant as a quantum link invariant. The algebraic background for the generalized Alexander module is formulated in terms of the biquandle, a generalization of the quandle of David Joyce (which, in turn, is a generalization of the fundamental group of the knot or link). We then introduce the concept of a bi-oriented quantum algebra which provides an algebraic context for the associated quantum invariant.
Given a virtual knot $K$, we construct a group $VG_K$ called the virtual knot group, and we use the elementary ideals of $VG_K$ to define invariants of $K$ called the virtual Alexander invariants. For instance, associated to the $k=0$ ideal is a polynomial $H_K(s,t,q)$ in three variables which we call the virtual Alexander polynomial, and we show that it is closely related to the generalized Alexander polynomial $G_K(s,t)$ introduced by Sawollek, Kauffman-Radford, and Silver-Williams. We define a natural normalization of the virtual Alexander polynomial and show it satisfies a skein formula. W…
We define a family of virtual knots generalizing the classical twist knots. We develop a recursive formula for the Alexander polynomial $Δ_0$ (as defined by Silver and Williams) of these virtual twist knots. These results are applied to provide evidence for a conjecture that the odd writhe of a virtual knot can be obtained from $Δ_0$.
We give a new interpretation of the Alexander polynomial $Δ_0$ for virtual knots due to Sawollek and Silver and Williams, and use it to show that, for any virtual knot, $Δ_0$ determines the writhe polynomial of Cheng and Gao (equivalently, Kauffman's affine index polynomial). We also use it to define a second-order writhe polynomial, and give some applications.
We prove Alexander- and Markov-type theorems for virtual spatial trivalent graphs and virtual trivalent braids. We provide two versions for the Markov-type theorem: one uses an algebraic approach similar to the case of classical braids and the other one is based on L-moves.
In this paper, we define the parity virtual Alexander polynomial following the work of BDGGHN [1] and Kaestner and Kauffman [10]. The properties of this invariant are explored and some examples are computed. In particular, the invariant demonstrates that many virtual knots can not be unknotted by crossing change on only odd crossings.
We show that every periodic virtual knot can be realized as the closure of a periodic virtual braid and use this to study the Alexander invariants of periodic virtual knots. If $K$ is a $q$-periodic and almost classical knot, we show that its quotient knot $K_*$ is also almost classical, and in the case $q=p^r$ is a prime power, we establish an analogue of Murasugi's congruence relating the Alexander polynomials of $K$ and $K_*$ over the integers modulo $p$. This result is applied to the problem of determining the possible periods of a virtual knot $K$. One consequence is that if $K$ is an alm…
We use the Bar-Natan Zh-correspondence to identify the generalized Alexander polynomial of a virtual knot with the Alexander polynomial of a two component welded link. We show that the Zh-map is functorial under concordance, and also that Satoh's Tube map (from welded links to ribbon knotted tori in $S^4$) is functorial under concordance. In addition, we extend classical results of Chen, Milnor, and Hillman on the lower central series of link groups to links in thickened surfaces. Our main result is that the generalized Alexander polynomial vanishes on any knot in a thickened surface which is …
In [Jo14] and [Jo18] Vaughan Jones introduced a construction which yields oriented knots and links from elements of the oriented Thompson group $\vec{F}$. In this paper we prove, by analogy with Alexander's classical theorem establishing that every knot or link can be represented as a closed braid, that given an oriented knot/link $\vec{L}$, there exists an element $g$ in $\vec{F}$ whose closure $\vec{\mathcal{L}}(g)$ is $\vec L$.
Study of certain isotopy classes of a finite collection of immersed circles without triple or higher intersections on closed oriented surfaces can be thought of as a planar analogue of virtual knot theory where the genus zero case corresponds to classical knot theory. Alexander and Markov theorems for the genus zero case are known where the role of groups is played by twin groups, a class of right angled Coxeter groups with only far commutativity relations. The purpose of this paper is to prove Alexander and Markov theorems for higher genus case where the role of groups is played by a new clas…
We define a group-valued invariant of virtual knots and relate it to various other group-valued invariants of virtual knots, including the extended group of Silver-Williams and the quandle group of Manturov and Bardakov-Bellingeri. A virtual knot is called almost classical if it admits a diagram with an Alexander numbering, and in that case we show that the group factors as a free product of the usual knot group and Z. We establish a similar formula for mod p almost classical knots, and we use these results to derive obstructions to a virtual knot K being mod p almost classical. Viewed as knot…
We generalize the notion of biquandles to psyquandles and use these to define invariants of oriented singular links and pseudolinks. In addition to psyquandle counting invariants, we introduce Alexander psyquandles and corresponding invariants such as Alexander psyquandle polynomials and Alexander-Gröbner psyquandle invariants of oriented singular knots and links. We consider the relationship between Alexander psyquandle colorings of pseudolinks and p-colorings of pseudolinks. As a special case we define a generalization of the Alexander polynomial for oriented singular links and pseudolinks w…
We construct an Alexander type invariant for oriented doodles from a deformation of the Tits representation of the twin group and from the Chebyshev polynomials of second kind. Similar to the Alexander polynomial, our invariant vanishes on unlinked doodles with more than one component. We also include values of our invariant on several doodles.
This paper gives a connection between well chosen reductions of the Links-Gould invariants of oriented links and powers of the Alexander-Conway polynomial. We prove these formulas by showing the representations of the braid groups we derive the specialized Links-Gould polynomials from can be seen as exterior powers of copies of Burau representations.
We define invariants of oriented surface-links by enhancing the biquandle counting invariant using \textit{biquandle modules}, algebraic structures defined in terms of biquandle actions on commutative rings analogous to Alexander biquandles. We show that bead colorings of marked graph diagrams are preserved by Yoshikawa moves and hence define enhancements of the biquandle counting invariant for surface links. We provide examples illustrating the computation of the invariant and demonstrate that these invariants are not determined by the first and second Alexander elementary ideals and characte…
We study piecewise linear co-dimension two embeddings of closed oriented manifolds in Euclidean space, and show that any such embedding can always be isotoped to be a closed braid as long as the ambient dimension is at most five, extending results of Alexander (in ambient dimension three), and Viro and independently Kamada (in ambient dimension four). We also show an analogous result for higher co-dimension embeddings.
A. Ishii and K. Oshiro introduced the notion of an $f$-twisted Alexander matrix. This notion is a quandle version of the twisted Alexander matrix which was introduced by M. Wada. They showed that the twisted Alexander matrix of a pair of a link group and a group representation can be recovered from the $f$-twisted Alexander matrix of a pair of a link quandle and a quandle homomorphism. In this paper, we study a relationship between the $f$-twisted Alexander matrix and the quandle cocycle invariant. As an application, we show that an $f$-twisted Alexander invariant of knot quandles is a really …
We give an explicit formula of the Alexander polynomial of the link obtained by adding an arbitrary number of full twists to positively oriented parallel n-strands in terms of the Alexander polynomials of the links obtained by adding 0,1,...,n-1 full twists. From this, we see that the Alexander polynomials stabilize after adding sufficiently many full twists. The main tool used in the computation is expressing the Alexander polynomial using the vector space representation of $U_{q}(gl(1|1))$.
We construct a weak 2-functor from the bicategory of oriented tangles to a bicategory of Lagrangian cospans. This functor simultaneously extends the Burau representation of the braid groups, its generalization to tangles due to Turaev and the first-named author, and the Alexander module of 1 and 2-dimensional links.
In this paper we apply the twisted Alexander polynomial to study the fibering and genus detecting problems for oriented links. In particular we generalize a conjecture of Dunfield, Friedl and Jackson on the torsion polynomial of hyperbolic knots to hyperbolic links, and confirm it for an infinite family of hyperbolic 2-bridge links. Moreover we consider a similar problem for parabolic representations of 2-bridge link groups.
Let l be an oriented link of d components in a homology 3-sphere. For any nonnegative integer q, let l(q) be the link of d-1 components obtained from l by performing 1/q surgery on the dth component. Then the Mahler measure of the Alexander polynomial of l(q) converges to the Mahler measure of the Alexander polynomial of l as q goes to infinity, provided that some other component of l has nonzero linking number with the dth. Otherwise, the Mahler measure of the Alexander polynomial of l(q) has a well-defined bu different limiting behavior. Examples are given of links for which the Mahler measu…
The purpose of this paper is to give a new basis for examining the relationships of the Affine Index Polynomial and the Sawollek Polynomial. Blake Mellor has written a pioneering paper showing how the Affine Index Polynomial may be extracted from the Sawollek Polynomial. The Affine Index Polynomial is an elementary combinatorial invariant of virtual knots. The Sawollek polynomial is a relative of the classical Alexander polynomial and is defined in terms of a generalization of the Alexander module to virtual knots that derives from the so-called Alexander Biquandle. The present paper construct…
In this paper we provide a new obstruction to 0-concordance of knotted surfaces in $S^4$ in terms of Alexander ideals. We use this to prove the existence of infinitely many linearly independent 0-concordance classes and to provide the first proof that the submonoid of 2-knots is not a group. The main result is that the Alexander ideal induces a homomorphism from the 0-concordance monoid $\mathscr{C}_0$ of oriented surface knots in $S^4$ to the ideal class monoid of $\mathbb{Z}[t^{\pm1}]$. Consequently, any surface knot with nonprincipal Alexander ideal is not 0-slice and in fact, not invertibl…
This is a sequel to [arXiv:1708.09092v2]. For an oriented trivalent graph $G$ without source or sink embedded in $S^3$, we prove that the $\mathfrak{gl}(1| 1)$-Alexander polynomial $\underlineΔ(G, c)$ defined by Viro satisfies a series of relations, which we call MOY-type relations in [arXiv:1708.09092v2]. As a corollary we show that the Alexander polynomial $Δ_{(G, c)}(t)$ studied in [arXiv:1708.09092v2] coincides with $\underlineΔ(G, c)$ for a positive coloring $c$ of $G$, where $Δ_{(G, c)}(t)$ is constructed from certain regular covering space of the complement of $G$ in $S^3$ and it is the…
Geometric interpretations of some virtual knot invariants are given in terms of invariants of links in $\mathbb{S}^3$. Alexander polynomials of almost classical knots are shown to be specializations of the multi-variable Alexander polynomial of certain two-component boundary links of the form $J \sqcup K$ with $J$ a fibered knot. The index of a crossing, a common ingredient in the construction of virtual knot invariants, is related to the Milnor triple linking number of certain three-component links $J \sqcup K_1 \sqcup K_2$ with $J$ a connected sum of trefoils or figure-eights. Our main techn…
Virtual singular braids are generalizations of singular braids and virtual braids. We define the virtual singular braid monoid via generators and relations, and prove Alexander- and Markov-type theorems for virtual singular links. We also show that the virtual singular braid monoid has another presentation with fewer generators.
Ribbon tangles are proper embeddings of tori and cylinders in the $4$-ball~$B^4$, "bounding" $3$-manifolds with only ribbon disks as singularities. We construct an Alexander invariant $\mathsf{A}$ of ribbon tangles equipped with a representation of the fundamental group of their exterior in a free abelian group $G$. This invariant induces a functor in a certain category $\mathsf{R}ib_G$ of tangles, which restricts to the exterior powers of Burau-Gassner representation for ribbon braids, that are analogous to usual braids in this context. We define a circuit algebra $\mathsf{C}ob_G$ over the op…
We study generalizations of a classical link invariant -- the multivariable Alexander polynomial -- to tangles. The starting point is Archibald's tMVA invariant for virtual tangles which lives in the setting of circuit algebras, and whose target space has dimension that is exponential in the number of strands. Using the Hodge star map and restricting to tangles without closed components, we define a reduction of the tMVA to an invariant "rMVA" which is valued in matrices with Laurent polynomial entries, and so has a much more compact target space. We show the rMVA has the structure of a metamo…
