We present precise asymptotics of the odometer function for the internal Diffusion Limited Aggregation model. These results provide a better understanding of this function whose importance was demonstrated by Levine and Peres. We derive a different proof of a time-scale result by Lawler, Bramson and Griffeath.
We study internal diffusion-limited aggregation with random starting points on Z^d. In this model, each new particle starts from a vertex chosen uniformly at random on the existing aggregate. We prove that the limiting shape of the aggregate is a Euclidean ball.
The Internal Diffusion Limited Aggregation has been introduced by Diaconis and Fulton in 1991. It is a growth model defined on an infinite set and associated to a Markov chain on this set. We focus here on sets which are finitely generated groups with exponential growth. We prove a shape theorem for the Internal DLA on such groups associated to symmetric random walks. For that purpose, we introduce a new distance associated to the Green function, which happens to have some interesting properties. In the case of homogeneous trees, we also get the right order for the fluctuations of that model a…
The two-dimensional comb lattice $C_2$ is a natural spanning tree of the Euclidean lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$. We study three related cluster growth models on $C_2$: internal diffusion limited aggregation (IDLA), in which random walkers move on the vertices of $C_2$ until reaching an unoccupied site where they stop; rotor-router aggregation in which particles perform deterministic walks, and stop when reaching a site previously unoccupied; and the divisible sandpile model where at each vertex there is a pile of sand, for which, at each step, the mass exceeding 1 is distributed equally among the ne…
Internal Diffusion Limited Aggregation (IDLA) is a model that describes the growth of a random aggregate of particles from the inside out. Shellef proved that IDLA processes on supercritical percolation clusters of integer-lattices fill Euclidean balls, with high probability. In this article, we complete the picture and prove a limit-shape theorem for IDLA on such percolation clusters, by providing the corresponding upper bound. The technique to prove upper bounds is new and robust: it only requires the existence of a "good" lower bound. Specifically, this way of proving upper bounds on IDLA c…
We consider a cluster growth model on Z^d, called internal diffusion limited aggregation (internal DLA). In this model, random walks start at the origin, one at a time, and stop moving when reaching a site not occupied by previous walks. It is known that the asymptotic shape of the cluster is spherical. Also, when dimension is 2 or more, and when the cluster has volume $n^d$, it is known that fluctuations of the radius are at most of order $n^{1/3}$. We improve this estimate to $n^{1/(d+1)}$, in dimension 3 or more. In so doing, we introduce a closely related cluster growth model, that we call…
Internal diffusion limited aggregation (IDLA) is a random aggregation model on a graph $G$, whose clusters are formed by random walks started in the origin (some fixed vertex) and stopped upon visiting a previously unvisited site. On the Sierpinski gasket graph the asymptotic shape is known to be a ball in the usual graph metric. In this paper we establish bounds for the fluctuations of the cluster from its asymptotic shape.
We build the iDLA cluster using drifted random walks, and study the limiting shapes they exhibit, with the help of sandpile models. For constant drift, the normalised cluster converges to a canonical shape S, which can be termed a true heat ball, in that it gives rise to a mean value property for caloric functions. The existence and boundedness of such a shape answers a natural yet open question in PDE theory.
We introduce a two-type internal DLA model which is an example of a non-unary abelian network. Starting with n "oil" and n "water" particles at the origin, the particles diffuse in Z according to the following rule: whenever some site x has at least 1 oil and at least 1 water particle present, it "fires" by sending 1 oil particle and 1 water particle each to an independent random neighbor x+1 or x-1. Firing continues until every site has at most one type of particles. We establish the correct order for several statistics of this model and identify the scaling limit under assumption of existenc…
We consider a cluster growth model on the d-dimensional lattice, called internal diffusion limited aggregation (internal DLA). In this model, random walks start at the origin, one at a time, and stop moving when reaching a site not occupied by previous walks. It is known that the asymptotic shape of the cluster is spherical. When dimension is 2 or more, we prove that fluctuations with respect to a sphere are at most a power of the logarithm of its radius in dimension d larger than or equal to 2. In so doing, we introduce a closely related cluster growth model, that we call the flashing process…
Internal diffusion-limited aggregation is a growth model based on random walk in Z^d. We study how the shape of the aggregate depends on the law of the underlying walk, focusing on a family of walks in Z^2 for which the limiting shape is a diamond. Certain of these walks -- those with a directional bias toward the origin -- have at most logarithmic fluctuations around the limiting shape. This contrasts with the simple random walk, where the limiting shape is a disk and the best known bound on the fluctuations, due to Lawler, is a power law. Our walks enjoy a uniform layering property which sim…
We study the following growth model on a regular d-ary tree. Points at distance n adjacent to the existing subtree are added with probabilities proportional to alpha^{-n}, where alpha<1 is a positive real parameter. The heights of these clusters are shown to increase linearly with their total size; this complements known results that show the height increases only logarithmically when alpha>=1. Results are obtained using stochastic monotonicity and regeneration results which may be of independent interest. Our motivation comes from two other ways in which the model may be viewed: as a problem …
Let each of n particles starting at the origin in Z^2 perform simple random walk until reaching a site with no other particles. Lawler, Bramson, and Griffeath proved that the resulting random set A(n) of n occupied sites is (with high probability) close to a disk B_r of radius r=\sqrt{n/π}. We show that the discrepancy between A(n) and the disk is at most logarithmic in the radius: i.e., there is an absolute constant C such that the following holds with probability one: B_{r - C \log r} \subset A(πr^2) \subset B_{r+ C \log r} for all sufficiently large r.
We study the scaling limits of three different aggregation models on Z^d: internal DLA, in which particles perform random walks until reaching an unoccupied site; the rotor-router model, in which particles perform deterministic analogues of random walks; and the divisible sandpile, in which each site distributes its excess mass equally among its neighbors. As the lattice spacing tends to zero, all three models are found to have the same scaling limit, which we describe as the solution to a certain PDE free boundary problem in R^d. In particular, internal DLA has a deterministic scaling limit. …
We study internal diffusion limited aggregation (DLA) on the two dimensional comb lattice. The comb lattice is a spanning tree of the euclidean lattice, and internal DLA is a random growth model, where simple random walks, starting one at a time at the origin of the comb, stop when reaching the first unoccupied site. An asymptotic shape is suggested by a lower bound of Huss and Sava. We show that fluctuations with respect to this shape are gaussian as in the one-dimensional lattice.
We study the scaling limits of three different aggregation models on the integer lattice Z^d: internal DLA, in which particles perform random walks until reaching an unoccupied site; the rotor-router model, in which particles perform deterministic analogues of random walks; and the divisible sandpile, in which each site distributes its excess mass equally among its neighbors. As the lattice spacing tends to zero, all three models are found to have the same scaling limit, which we describe as the solution to a certain PDE free boundary problem in R^d. In particular, internal DLA has a determini…
Internal DLA (IDLA) is an internal aggregation model in which particles perform random walks from the origin, in turn, and stop upon reaching an unoccupied site. Levine and Peres showed that, when particles start instead from fixed multiple-point distributions, the modified IDLA processes have deterministic scaling limits related to a certain obstacle problem. In this paper, we investigate the convergence rate of this "extended source" IDLA in the plane to its scaling limit. We show that, if $δ$ is the lattice size, fluctuations of the IDLA occupied set are at most of order $δ^{3/5}$ from its …
Let A(t) denote the cluster produced by internal diffusion limited aggregation (internal DLA) with t particles in dimension d > 2. We show that A(t) is approximately spherical, up to an O(\sqrt{\log t}) error.
We consider internal diffusion limited aggregation in dimension larger than or equal to two. This is a random cluster growth model, where random walks start at the origin of the d-dimensional lattice, one at a time, and stop moving when reaching a site that is not occupied by previous walks. When n random walks are sent from the origin, we establish a lower bound for the inner and outer errors fluctuations of order square root of the logarithm of n. When dimension is larger or equal to three, this lower bound matches the upper bound recently obtained in independent works of \cite{AG2} and \cit…
We show that Internal Diffusion Limited Aggregation (IDLA) on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ has near optimal Cheeger constant when the growing cluster is large enough. This implies, through a heat kernel lower bound derived previously in [H], that simple random walk evolving independently on growing in time IDLA cluster is recurrent when $d\ge 3$.
We consider internal diffusion limited aggregation in dimension larger than or equal to two. This is a random cluster growth model, where random walks start at the origin of the d-dimensional lattice, one at a time, and stop moving when reaching a site that is not occupied by previous walks. It is known that the asymptotic shape of the cluster is a sphere. When the dimension is two or more, we have shown in a previous paper that the inner (resp., outer) fluctuations of its radius is at most of order $\log(\mathrm{radius})$ [resp., $\log^2(\mathrm{radius})$]. Using the same approach, we improve…
Internal diffusion-limited aggregation (IDLA) is a stochastic growth model on a graph $G$ which describes the formation of a random set of vertices growing from the origin (some fixed vertex) of $G$. Particles start at the origin and perform simple random walks; each particle moves until it lands on a site which was not previously visited by other particles. This random set of occupied sites in $G$ is called the IDLA cluster. In this paper we consider IDLA on Sierpinski gasket graphs, and show that the IDLA cluster fills balls (in the graph metric) with probability 1.
