Let A(t) denote the cluster produced by internal diffusion limited aggregation (internal DLA) with t particles in dimension d > 2. We show that A(t) is approximately spherical, up to an O(\sqrt{\log t}) error.
In previous works, we showed that the internal DLA cluster on \Z^d with t particles is a.s. spherical up to a maximal error of O(\log t) if d=2 and O(\sqrt{\log t}) if d > 2. This paper addresses "average error": in a certain sense, the average deviation of internal DLA from its mean shape is of constant order when d=2 and of order r^{1-d/2} (for a radius r cluster) in general. Appropriately normalized, the fluctuations (taken over time and space) scale to a variant of the Gaussian free field.
We present an unified approach on the behavior of two random growth models (external DLA and internal DLA) on infinite graphs, the second one being an internal counterpart of the first one. Even though the two models look pretty similar, their behavior is completely different: while external DLA tends to build irregularities and fractal-like structures, internal DLA tends to fill up gaps and to produce regular clusters. We will also consider the aforementioned models on fractal graphs like Sierpinski gasket and carpet, and present some recent results and possible questions to investigate.
We prove a law of large numbers for the right boundary in the model of internal DLA generated by cookie random walks in dimension one. The proof is based on stochastic algorithms techniques.
We identify the limit of the internal DLA cluster generated by Sinai's walk as the law of a functional of a Brownian motion which turns out to be a new interpretation of the Arcsine law.
Internal diffusion-limited aggregation (IDLA) is a stochastic growth model on a graph $G$ which describes the formation of a random set of vertices growing from the origin (some fixed vertex) of $G$. Particles start at the origin and perform simple random walks; each particle moves until it lands on a site which was not previously visited by other particles. This random set of occupied sites in $G$ is called the IDLA cluster. In this paper we consider IDLA on Sierpinski gasket graphs, and show that the IDLA cluster fills balls (in the graph metric) with probability 1.
We study internal diffusion limited aggregation (DLA) on the two dimensional comb lattice. The comb lattice is a spanning tree of the euclidean lattice, and internal DLA is a random growth model, where simple random walks, starting one at a time at the origin of the comb, stop when reaching the first unoccupied site. An asymptotic shape is suggested by a lower bound of Huss and Sava. We show that fluctuations with respect to this shape are gaussian as in the one-dimensional lattice.
We had established inner and outer fluctuation for the internal DLA cluster when all walks are launched from the origin. In obtaining the outer fluctuation, we had used a deep lemma of Jerison, Levine and Sheffield, which estimate roughly the possibility of fingering, and had provided a simple proof using an interesting estimate for crossing probability for a simple random walk. The application of the crossing probability to the fingering for the internal DLA cluster contains a flaw discovered recently, that we correct in this note. We take the opportunity to make a self-contained exposition.
In a previous work, we showed that the 2D, extended-source internal DLA (IDLA) of Levine and Peres is $δ^{3/5}$-close to its scaling limit, if $δ$ is the lattice size. In this paper, we investigate the scaling limits of the fluctuations themselves. Namely, we show that two naturally defined error functions, which measure the "lateness" of lattice points at one time and at all times, respectively, converge to geometry-dependent Gaussian random fields. We use these results to calculate point-correlation functions associated with the fluctuations of the flow. Along the way, we demonstrate similar…
Internal diffusion limited aggregation (IDLA) is a random aggregation model on a graph $G$, whose clusters are formed by random walks started in the origin (some fixed vertex) and stopped upon visiting a previously unvisited site. On the Sierpinski gasket graph the asymptotic shape is known to be a ball in the usual graph metric. In this paper we establish bounds for the fluctuations of the cluster from its asymptotic shape.
Internal DLA is a discrete model of a moving interface. On the cylinder graph $\mathbb{Z}_N \times \mathbb{Z}$, a particle starts uniformly on $\mathbb{Z}_N \times \{0\}$ and performs simple random walk on the cylinder until reaching an unoccupied site in $\mathbb{Z}_N \times \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$, which it occupies forever. This operation defines a Markov chain on subsets of the cylinder. We first show that a typical subset is rectangular with at most logarithmic fluctuations. We use this to prove that two Internal DLA chains started from different typical subsets can be coupled with high prob…
Internal DLA (IDLA) is an internal aggregation model in which particles perform random walks from the origin, in turn, and stop upon reaching an unoccupied site. Levine and Peres showed that, when particles start instead from fixed multiple-point distributions, the modified IDLA processes have deterministic scaling limits related to a certain obstacle problem. In this paper, we investigate the convergence rate of this "extended source" IDLA in the plane to its scaling limit. We show that, if $δ$ is the lattice size, fluctuations of the IDLA occupied set are at most of order $δ^{3/5}$ from its …
Let each of n particles starting at the origin in Z^2 perform simple random walk until reaching a site with no other particles. Lawler, Bramson, and Griffeath proved that the resulting random set A(n) of n occupied sites is (with high probability) close to a disk B_r of radius r=\sqrt{n/π}. We show that the discrepancy between A(n) and the disk is at most logarithmic in the radius: i.e., there is an absolute constant C such that the following holds with probability one: B_{r - C \log r} \subset A(πr^2) \subset B_{r+ C \log r} for all sufficiently large r.
We consider a cluster growth model on the d-dimensional lattice, called internal diffusion limited aggregation (internal DLA). In this model, random walks start at the origin, one at a time, and stop moving when reaching a site not occupied by previous walks. It is known that the asymptotic shape of the cluster is spherical. When dimension is 2 or more, we prove that fluctuations with respect to a sphere are at most a power of the logarithm of its radius in dimension d larger than or equal to 2. In so doing, we introduce a closely related cluster growth model, that we call the flashing process…
We use coupling ideas introduced in \cite{levine2018long} to show that an IDLA process on a cylinder graph $G\times \mathbb{Z}$ forgets a typical initial profile in $\mathcal{O}( N\sqrt{τ_N} (\log \! N)^2 )$ steps for large $N$, where $N$ is the size of the base graph $G$, and $τ_N$ is the total variation mixing time of a simple random walk on $G$. The main new ingredient is a maximal fluctuations bound for IDLA on $G\times \mathbb{Z}$ which only relies on the mixing properties of the base graph $G$ and the Abelian property.
We consider internal diffusion limited aggregation in dimension larger than or equal to two. This is a random cluster growth model, where random walks start at the origin of the d-dimensional lattice, one at a time, and stop moving when reaching a site that is not occupied by previous walks. When n random walks are sent from the origin, we establish a lower bound for the inner and outer errors fluctuations of order square root of the logarithm of n. When dimension is larger or equal to three, this lower bound matches the upper bound recently obtained in independent works of \cite{AG2} and \cit…
We consider internal diffusion limited aggregation in dimension larger than or equal to two. This is a random cluster growth model, where random walks start at the origin of the d-dimensional lattice, one at a time, and stop moving when reaching a site that is not occupied by previous walks. It is known that the asymptotic shape of the cluster is a sphere. When the dimension is two or more, we have shown in a previous paper that the inner (resp., outer) fluctuations of its radius is at most of order $\log(\mathrm{radius})$ [resp., $\log^2(\mathrm{radius})$]. Using the same approach, we improve…
We consider Diffusion Limited Aggregation (DLA) in a two-dimensional wedge. We prove that if the angle of the wedge is smaller than $π/4$, there is some $a>2$ such that almost surely, for all $R$ large enough, after time $R^a$ all new particles attached to the DLA will be at distance larger than $R$ from the origin. This means that DLA stabilizes in growing balls, thus allowing a definition of the infinite DLA in a wedge via a finite time process.
We consider a cluster growth model on Z^d, called internal diffusion limited aggregation (internal DLA). In this model, random walks start at the origin, one at a time, and stop moving when reaching a site not occupied by previous walks. It is known that the asymptotic shape of the cluster is spherical. Also, when dimension is 2 or more, and when the cluster has volume $n^d$, it is known that fluctuations of the radius are at most of order $n^{1/3}$. We improve this estimate to $n^{1/(d+1)}$, in dimension 3 or more. In so doing, we introduce a closely related cluster growth model, that we call…
We study the scaling limits of three different aggregation models on Z^d: internal DLA, in which particles perform random walks until reaching an unoccupied site; the rotor-router model, in which particles perform deterministic analogues of random walks; and the divisible sandpile, in which each site distributes its excess mass equally among its neighbors. As the lattice spacing tends to zero, all three models are found to have the same scaling limit, which we describe as the solution to a certain PDE free boundary problem in R^d. In particular, internal DLA has a deterministic scaling limit. …
We introduce a two-type internal DLA model which is an example of a non-unary abelian network. Starting with n "oil" and n "water" particles at the origin, the particles diffuse in Z according to the following rule: whenever some site x has at least 1 oil and at least 1 water particle present, it "fires" by sending 1 oil particle and 1 water particle each to an independent random neighbor x+1 or x-1. Firing continues until every site has at most one type of particles. We establish the correct order for several statistics of this model and identify the scaling limit under assumption of existenc…
The Internal Diffusion Limited Aggregation has been introduced by Diaconis and Fulton in 1991. It is a growth model defined on an infinite set and associated to a Markov chain on this set. We focus here on sets which are finitely generated groups with exponential growth. We prove a shape theorem for the Internal DLA on such groups associated to symmetric random walks. For that purpose, we introduce a new distance associated to the Green function, which happens to have some interesting properties. In the case of homogeneous trees, we also get the right order for the fluctuations of that model a…
We consider the DLA process on a cylinder G x N. It is shown that this process "grows arms", provided that the base graph G has small enough mixing time. Specifically, if the mixing time of G is at most (log|G|)^(2-\eps), the time it takes the cluster to reach the m-th layer of the cylinder is at most of order m |G|/loglog|G|. In particular we get examples of infinite Cayley graphs of degree 5, for which the DLA cluster on these graphs has arbitrarily small density. In addition, we provide an upper bound on the rate at which the "arms" grow. This bound is valid for a large class of base graphs…
We consider the following problem in one-dimensional diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA). At time $t$, we have an "aggregate" consisting of $\Bbb{Z}\cap[0,R(t)]$ [with $R(t)$ a positive integer]. We also have $N(i,t)$ particles at $i$, $i>R(t)$. All these particles perform independent continuous-time symmetric simple random walks until the first time $t'>t$ at which some particle tries to jump from $R(t)+1$ to $R(t)$. The aggregate is then increased to the integers in $[0,R(t')]=[0,R(t)+1]$ [so that $R(t')=R(t)+1$] and all particles which were at $R(t)+1$ at time $t'{-}$ are removed from the s…
We study one-dimensional multi-particle Diffusion Limited Aggregation (MDLA) at its critical density $λ=1$. Previous works have verified that the size of the aggregate $X_t$ at time $t$ is $t^{1/2}$ in the subcritical regime and linear in the supercritical regime. This paper establishes the conjecture that the growth rate at criticiality is $t^{2/3}$. Moreover, we derive the scaling limit proving that $$\big\{ t^{-2/3}X_{st} \big\}_{s\geq 0} \overset{d}{\rightarrow} \Big\{ \int_0^s Z_u du \Big\}_{s\geq 0}, $$ where the speed process $\{Z_t\}$ is a $(-\frac{1}{3})$-self-similar diffusion given …

We revisit Kesten's argument for the upper bound on the growth rate of DLA. We are able to make the argument robust enough so that it applies to many graphs, where only control of the heat kernel is required. We apply this to many examples including transitive graphs of polynomial growth, graphs of exponential growth, non-amenable graphs, super-critical percolation on Z^d, high dimensional pre-Sierpinski carpets. We also observe that a careful analysis shows that Kesten's original bound on Z^3 can be improved from t^{2/3} to (t log t)^{1/2} .
