Define a Garside monoid to be a cancellative monoid where right and left lcm's exist and that satisfy additional finiteness assumptions, and a Garside group to be the group of fractions of a Garside monoid. The family of Garside groups contains the braid groups, all spherical Artin groups, and various generalizations previously considered (In particular, the Garside groups considered in [1,7] are special cases of those considered here; the latter had been called "small Gaussian" in earlier works; the name has been changed in order to uniformize the terminology with works by Bessis, Charney, Michel, and other authors). Here we prove that Garside groups are biautomatic, and that being a Garside group is a recursively enumerable property, i.e., there exists an algorithm constructing the (infinite) list of all small Gaussian groups. The latter result relies on an effective, tractable method for recognizing those presentations that define a Garside monoid.
We introduce a relative Garside element, the quotient of the corresponding Garside elements G1 and G2, for a pair of Artin monoids associated to Coxeter graphs Gamma1 and Gamma2, the second graph containing a new vertex. These relative elements give a recurrence relation between Garside elements. As an application, we compute explicitly the Garside elements of Artin monoids corresponding to spherical Coxeter graphs or the longest elements of the associated finite Coxeter groups.
We expound the properties of ribbons in a setting which is general enough to encompass spherical Artin monoids and dual braid monoids of well-generated complex reflection groups. We generalize to our setting results on parabolic subgroups of spherical Artin group of Godelle, Cumplido, and others.
A monoid $K$ is the internal Zappa-Szép product of two submonoids, if every element of $K$ admits a unique factorisation as the product of one element of each of the submonoids in a given order. This definition yields actions of the submonoids on each other, which we show to be structure preserving. We prove that $K$ is a Garside monoid if and only if both of the submonoids are Garside monoids. In this case, these factors are parabolic submonoids of $K$ and the Garside structure of $K$ can be described in terms of the Garside structures of the factors. We give explicit isomorphisms between the…
We describe new types of normal forms for braid monoids, Artin-Tits monoids, and, more generally, for all monoids in which divisibility has some convenient lattice properties (``locally Garside monoids''). We show that, in the case of braids, one of these normal forms coincides with the normal form introduced by Burckel and deduce that the latter can be computed easily. This approach leads to a new, simple description for the standard ordering (``Dehornoy order'') of Bn in terms of that of B(n-1), and to a quadratic upper bound for the complexity of this ordering.
A Garside monoid is a cancellative monoid with a finite lattice generating set; a Garside group is the group of fractions of a Garside monoid. The family of Garside groups contains the Artin-Tits groups of spherical type. We generalise the well-known notion of a parabolic subgroup of an Artin-Tits group into that of a parabolic subgroup of a Garside group. We also define the more general notion of a Garside subgroup of a Garside group, which is related to the notion of LCM-homomorphisms between Artin-Tits groups. We prove that most of the properties of parabolic subgroups extend to this subgro…
We show that every finitely generated Artin-Tits group admits a finite Garside family, by introducing the notion of a low element in a Coxeter group and proving that the family of all low elements in a Coxeter system (W, S) with S finite includes S and is finite and closed under suffix and join with respect to the right weak order.
Starting from the seminal example of the greedy normal norm in braid monoids, we analyse the mechanism of the normal form in a Garside monoid and explain how it extends to the more general framework of Garside families. Extending the viewpoint even more, we then consider general quadratic normalisation procedures and characterise Garside normalisation among them.
This paper shows how to construct coherent presentations (presentations by generators, relations and relations among relations) of monoids admitting a right-noetherian Garside family. Thereby, it resolves the question of finding a unifying generalisation of the following two distinct extensions of construction of coherent presentations for spherical Artin-Tits monoids: to general Artin-Tits monoids, and to Garside monoids. The result is applied to some monoids which are neither Artin-Tits nor Garside.
Divisibility monoids (resp. Garside monoids) are a natural algebraic generalization of Mazurkiewicz trace monoids (resp. spherical Artin monoids), namely monoids in which the distributivity of the underlying lattices (resp. the existence of common multiples) is kept as an hypothesis, but the relations between the generators are not supposed to necessarily be commutations (resp. be of Coxeter type). Here, we show that the quasi-center of these monoids can be studied and described similarly, and then we exhibit the intersection between the two classes of monoids.
On the model of simple braids, defined to be the left divisors of Garside's elements $Δ\_n$ in the monoid $B\_\infty^+$ , we investigate simple elements in Thompson's monoid $F^+$ and in a larger monoid $H^+$ that is a hybrid of $B\_\infty^+$ and $F^+$ : in both cases, we count how many simple elements left divide the right lcm of the first n -- 1 atoms, and characterize their normal forms in terms of forbidden factors. In the case of $H^+$, a generalized Pascal triangle appears.
We show the intimate connection between various mathematical notions that are currently under active investigation: a class of Garside monoids, with a "nice" Garside element, certain monoids $S$ with quadratic relations, whose monoidal algebra $A= k[S]$ has a Frobenius Koszul dual $A^{!}$ with regular socle, the monoids of skew-polynomial type (or equivalently, binomial skew-polynomial rings) which were introduced and studied by the author and in 1995 provided a new class of Noetherian Artin-Schelter regular domains, and the square-free set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. Ther…
Garside families have recently emerged as a relevant context for extending results involving Garside monoids and groups, which themselves extend the classical theory of (generalized) braid groups. Here we establish various characterizations of Garside families, that is, equivalently, various criteria for establishing the existence of normal decompositions of a certain type.
We construct a quasi-Garside monoid structure for the free group. This monoid should be thought of as a dual braid monoid for the free group, generalising the constructions by Birman-Ko-Lee and by the author of new Garside monoids for Artin groups of spherical type. Conjecturally, an analog construction should be available for arbitrary Artin groups and for braid groups of well-generated complex reflection groups.
The submonoid of the $3$-strand braid group $\mathcal{B}_3$ generated by $σ_1$ and $σ_1 σ_2$ is known to yield an exotic Garside structure on $\mathcal{B}_3$. We introduce and study an infinite family $(M_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of Garside monoids generalizing this exotic Garside structure, i.e., such that $M_2$ is isomorphic to the above monoid. The corresponding Garside group $G(M_n)$ is isomorphic to the $(n,n+1)$-torus knot group-which is isomorphic to $\mathcal{B}_3$ for $n=2$ and to the braid group of the exceptional complex reflection group $G_{12}$ for $n=3$. This yields a new Garside structure …
We study two families of lattices whose number of elements are given by the numbers in even (respectively odd) positions in the Fibonacci sequence. The even Fibonacci lattice arises as the lattice of simple elements of a Garside monoid partially ordered by left-divisibility, and the odd Fibonacci lattice is an order ideal in the even one. We give a combinatorial proof of the lattice property, relying on a description of words for the Garside element in terms of Schröder trees, and on a recursive description of the even Fibonacci lattice. This yields an explicit formula to calculate meets and j…
We describe a new presentation for the complex reflection groups of type $(e,e,r)$ and their braid groups. A diagram for this presentation is proposed. The presentation is a monoid presentation which is shown to give rise to a Garside structure. A detailed study of the combinatorics of this structure leads us to describe it as post-classical.
In the general context of presentations of monoids, we study normalisation processes that are determined by their restriction to length-two words. Garside's greedy normal forms and quadratic convergent rewriting systems, in particular those associated with the plactic monoids, are typical examples. Having introduced a parameter, called the class and measuring the complexity of the normalisation of length-three words, we analyse the normalisation of longer words and describe a number of possible behaviours. We fully axiomatise normalisations of class (4, 3), show the convergence of the associat…
The Garside group, as a generalization of braid groups and Artin groups of finite types, is defined as the group of fractions of a Garside monoid. We show that the semidirect product of Garside monoids is a Garside monoid. We use the semidirect product $\mathbb Z\ltimes G^n$ of the infinite cyclic group $\mathbb Z$ and the cartesian product $G^n$ of a Garside group $G$ to study the properties of roots and powers of elements in $G$. The main result is an estimate of the growth of the minimal word-length of powers of elements in Garside groups, when the generating set is the set of simple elemen…
Garside calculus is the common mechanism that underlies a certain type of normal form for the elements of a monoid, a group, or a category. Originating from Garside's approach to Artin's braid groups, it has been extended to more and more general contexts, the latest one being that of categories and what are called Garside families. One of the benefits of this theory is to lead to algorithms solving effectively the naturally occurring problems, typically the Word Problem. The aim of this paper is to present and solve these algorithmic questions in the new extended framework.
We prove that the exponential growth rate of the regular language of penetration sequences is smaller than the growth rate of the regular language of normal form words, if the acceptor of the regular language of normal form words is strongly connected. Moreover, we show that the latter property is satisfied for all irreducible Artin monoids of spherical type, extending a result by Caruso. Our results establish that the expected value of the penetration distance $pd(x,y)$ in an irreducible Artin monoid of spherical type is bounded independently of the length of $x$, if $x$ is chosen uniformly a…
Several distinct Garside monoids having torus knot groups as groups of fractions are known. For $n,m\geq 2$ two coprime integers, we introduce a new Garside monoid $\mathcal{M}(n,m)$ having as Garside group the $(n,m)$-torus knot group, thereby generalizing to all torus knot groups a construction that we previously gave for the $(n,n+1)$-torus knot group. As a byproduct, we obtain new Garside structures for the braid groups of a few exceptional complex reflection groups of rank two. Analogous Garside structures are also constructed for a few additional braid groups of exceptional complex refle…
Building on a result by W. Rump, we show how to exploit the right-cyclic law (x.y).(x.z) = (y.x).(y.z) in order to investigate the structure groups and monoids attached with (involutive nondegenerate) set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. We develop a sort of right-cyclic calculus, and use it to obtain short proofs for the existence both of the Garside structure and of the I-structure of such groups. We describe finite quotients that exactly play for the considered groups the role that Coxeter groups play for Artin-Tits groups.
We improve and shorten the argument given in(Journal of Algebra, vol.~210 (1998) pp~291--297). Inparticular, the fact that Artin braid groups are torsion free now follows from Garsideś results almost immediately.
We define the notion of preGarside group slightly lightening the definition of Garside group so that all Artin-Tits groups are preGarside groups. This paper intends to give a first basic study on these groups. Firstly, we introduce the notion of parabolic subgroup, we prove that any preGarside group has a (partial) complemented presentation, and we characterize the parbolic subgroups in terms of these presentations. Afterwards we prove that the amalgamated product of two preGarside groups along a common parabolic subgroup is again a preGarside group. This enables us to define the family of pre…
We construct a new monoid structure for Artin groups associated with finite Coxeter systems. This monoid shares with the classical positive braid monoid a crucial algebraic property: it is a Garside monoid. The analogy with the classical construction indicates there is a ``dual'' way of studying Coxeter systems, where the pair (W,S) is replaced by (W,T), with T the set of all reflections. In the type A case, we recover the monoid constructed by Birman-Ko-Lee
We prove that an Artin-Tits group of type $\tilde C$ is the group of fractions of a Garside monoid, analogous to the known dual monoids associated with Artin-Tits groups of spherical type and obtained by the "generated group" method. This answers, in this particular case, a general question on Artin-Tits groups, gives a new presentation of an Artin-Tits group of type $\tilde C$, and has consequences for the word problem, the computation of some centralizers or the triviality of the center. A key point of the proof is to show that this group is a group of fixed points in an Artin-Tits group of …
We describe a simple scheme for constructing finitely generated monoids in which left-divisibility is a linear ordering and for practically investigating these monoids. The approach is based on subword reversing, a general method of combinatorial group theory, and connected with Garside theory, here in a non-Noetherian context. As an application we describe several families of ordered groups whose space of left-invariant orderings has an isolated point, including torus knot groups and some of their amalgamated products.
Birman, Ko and Lee have introduced a new monoid ${\cal B}^{*}_{n}$--with an explicit presentation--whose group of fractions is the $n$-strand braid group ${\cal B}_{n}$. Building on a new approach by Digne, Michel and himself, Bessis has defined a {\it dual} braid monoid for every finite Coxeter type Artin-Tits group extending the type A case. Here, we give an explicit presentation for this dual braid monoid in the case of types B and D, and we study the combinatorics of the underlying Garside structures.
We study Artin-Tits braid groups $\mathbb{B}_W$ of type ADE via the action of $\mathbb{B}_W$ on the homotopy category $\mathcal{K}$ of graded projective zigzag modules (which categorifies the action of the Weyl group $W$ on the root lattice). Following Brav-Thomas, we define a metric on $\mathbb{B}_W$ induced by the canonical $t$-structure on $\mathcal{K}$, and prove that this metric on $\mathbb{B}_W$ agrees with the word-length metric in the canonical generators of the standard positive monoid $\mathbb{B}_W^+$ of the braid group. We also define, for each choice of a Coxeter element $c$ in $W$…
Garside's results and the existense of the greedy normal form for braids are shown to be true for the singular braid monoid. An analogue of the presentation of J. S. Birman, K. H. Ko and S. J. Lee for the braid group is also obtained for this monoid.
We will study the presentations of fundamental groups of the complement of complexified real affine line arrangements that do not contain two parallel lines. By Yoshinaga's minimal presentation, we can give positive homogeneous presentations of the fundamental groups. We consider the associated monoids defined by the presentations. It turns out that, in some cases, left (resp. right) \emph{least common multiple} does not always exist. Hence, the monoids are neither \emph{Garside} nor \emph{Artin}. Nevertheless, we will show that they carry certain particular elements similar to the \emph{funda…
A number of properties of spherical Artin groups extend to Garside groups, defined as the groups of fractions of monoids where least common multiples exist, there is no nontrivial unit, and some additional finiteness conditions are satisfied \cite{Dgk}. Here we investigate a wider class of groups of fractions, called {\it thin}, which are those associated with monoids where minimal common multiples exist, but they are not necessarily unique. Also, we allow units in the involved monoids. The main results are that all thin groups of fractions satisfy a quadratic isoperimetric inequality, and tha…
A general result of Epstein and Thurston implies that all link groups are automatic, but the proof provides no explicit automaton. Here we show that the groups of all torus links are groups of fractions of so-called Garside monoids, i.e., roughly speaking, monoids with a good theory of divisibility, which allows us to reprove that those groups are automatic, but, in addition, gives a completely explicit description of the involved automata, thus partially answering a question of D.F.Holt.
We study monoids generated by Zariski-van Kampen generators in the 17 fundamental groups of the complement of logarithmic free divisors in C^3 listed by Sekiguchi (Theorem 1). Five of them are Artin monoids and eight of them are free abelian monoids. The remaining four monoids are not Gaussian and, hence, are neither Garside nor Artin (Theorem 2). However, we introduce, similarly to Artin monoids, fundamental elements and show their existence (Theorem 3). One of the four non-Gaussian monoids satisfies the cancellation condition (Theorem 4).
Inverse braid monoid describes a structure on braids where the number of strings is not fixed. So, some strings of initial $n$ may be deleted. In the paper we show that many properties and objects based on braid groups may be extended to the inverse braid monoids. Namely we prove an inclusion into a monoid of partial monomorphisms of a free group. This gives a solution of the word problem. Another solution is obtained by an approach similar to that of Garside. We give also the analogues of Artin presentation with two generators and Sergiescu graph-presentations.
In the present paper we define dual monoids for all Artin-Tits groups and we prove that for the type $\tilde A_n$ we get a (quasi)-Garside structure. Such a structure provides normal forms for the Artin-Tits group elements and allows to solve some questions such as to determine the centralizer of a power of the Coxeter element in the Artin-Tits group. More precisely, if $W$ is a Coxeter group, one can consider the length $l_R$ on $W$ with respect to the generating set $R$ consisting of all reflections. Let $c$ be a Coxeter element in $W$ and let $P_c$ be the set of elements $p\in W$ such that …
In Artin-Tits groups attached to Coxeter groups of spherical type, we give a combinatorial formula to express the simple elements of the dual braid monoids in the classical Artin generators. Every simple dual braid is obtained by lifting an $S$-reduced expression of its image in the Coxeter group, in a way which involves Reading's $c$-sortable elements. It has as an immediate consequence that simple dual braids are Mikado braids (the known proofs of this result either require topological realizations of the Artin groups or categorification techniques), and hence that their images in the Iwahor…
Let $(A_S,S)$ be an Artin-Tits and $X$ a subset of $S$ ; denote by $A_X$ the subgroup of $A_S$ generated by $X$. When $A_S$ is of spherical type, we prove that the normalizer and the commensurator of $A_X$ in $A_S$ are equal and are the product of $A_X$ by the quasi-centralizer of $A_X$ in $A_S$. Looking to the associated monoids $A_S^+$ and $A_X^+$, we describe the quasi-centralizer of $A_X^+$ in $A_S^+$ thanks to results in Coxeter groups. These two results generalize earlier results of Paris. Finaly, we compare, in the spherical case, the normalizer of a parabolic subgroup in the Artin-Tits…
We show the analogue of Muhlherr's [Coxeter groups in Coxeter groups, Finite Geom. and Combinatorics, Cambridge Univ. Press (1993), 277-287] for Artin-Tits monoids, and for Artin-Tits groups of spherical type. That is, the submonoid (resp. subgroup) of an Artin-Tits monoid (resp. group of spherical type) induced by an admissible partition of the Coxeter graph is an Artin-Tits monoid (resp. group). This generalizes and unifies the situation of the submonoid (resp. subgroup) of fixed elements of an Artin-Tits monoid (resp. group of spherical type) under the action of graph automorphisms, and the…
Consider an affine Coxeter group $W$ acting by isometries on the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, and the arrangement of its reflection hyperplanes. The fundamental group of the complement $Y_W$ of the complexification of this arrangement in $\mathbb{C}^n$ mod out by $W$ is the affine Artin group $G_W$ associated with $W$. The $K(π,1)$ conjecture states that $Y_W$ is a classifying space for $G_W$. It has been recently proved by Paolini and Salvetti building on the works of McCammond and Sulway. We will present some ingredients of the proof that rests on the study of dual Garside structures for …
We study the rational permutation braids, that is the elements of an Artin-Tits group of spherical type which can be written $x^{-1} y$ where $x$ and $y$ are prefixes of the Garside element of the braid monoid. We give a geometric characterization of these braids in type $A_n$ and $B_n$ and then show that in spherical types different from $D_n$ the simple elements of the dual braid monoid (for arbitrary choice of Coxeter element) embedded in the braid group are rational permutation braids (we conjecture this to hold also in type $D_n$).This property implies positivity properties of the polynom…
In this article we provide a new finite class of elements in any Coxeter system (W,S) called low elements. They are defined from Brink and Howlett's small roots, which are strongly linked to the automatic structure of (W,S). Our first main result is to show that they form a Garside shadow in (W,S), i.e., they contain S and are closed under join (for the right weak order) and by taking suffixes. These low elements are the key to prove that all finitely generated Artin-Tits groups have a finite Garside family. This result was announced in a note with P. Dehornoy (P. Dehornoy, M. Dyer, and C. Hoh…
We construct a family of morphisms between Artin-Tits groups which generalise the ones constructed by J. Crisp in [Injective maps between Artin groups, Proceedings of the Special Year in Geometric Group Theory, Berlin, (1999), 119 -- 138]. We show that their restrictions to the positive Artin monoids respect normal forms, and that for Artin-Tits groups of type FC, these morphisms are injective. The proof of the second result uses the Deligne Complex, and the normal cube paths constructed in [G. Niblo and L. Reeves, The geometry of cube complexes and the complexity of their fundamental groups, …
Reflection groups, geometry of the discriminant and noncrossing partitions. When W is a well-generated complex reflection group, the noncrossing partition lattice NCP_W of type W is a very rich combinatorial object, extending the notion of noncrossing partitions of an n-gon. This structure appears in several algebraic setups (dual braid monoid, cluster algebras...). Many combinatorial properties of NCP_W are proved case-by-case, using the classification of reflection groups. It is the case for Chapoton's formula, expressing the number of multichains of a given length in the lattice NCP_W, in t…
